There have been so many cool projects on here that I've totally forgotten about. While looking for poll ideas recently, I found an old fun fact categorizing all of the different monster types in a spreadsheet. This fun fact was from September 2020, so there's been a fair amount of Scooby media since then! The spreadsheet was never updated to include Guess Who season 2, five films, a special, or Velma. Given that, I figured it was time to give the original data an update! There were 60 villains from these pieces of media that I added to the spreadsheet. As a reminder, each multi-hyphenate monster is categorized by its primary category (i.e. the Ghost Monster is categorized under "Ghost"). In the previous fun fact, I joked about how Scooby loves making ghosts of monsters, but little did I know that we'd be getting a villain called the "Ghost Monster" from "The Movieland Monsters!" just a short eight months later haha. Multiple of the same monster in the same episode (i.e. the Shark Men from "Cher, Scooby and the Sargasso Sea!") are listed as one villain. The live-action films and the LEGO movies weren't included last time, but I added them in this time. In the past five years, we've had an alien, 7 animals, 2 beasts, a clown, 2 dinosaurs, a dragon, a Frankenstein's Monster, a gargoyle, nine ghosts, a ghoul, a gooey creature, a Greek Legend, a knight, a mummy, a group of Mystery Inc. doppëlgangers, a pirate, 3 plants, 4 robots, a scarecrow, a skeleton, 2 snow monsters, a zombie, 12 non-ghost humans, and 4 miscellaneous monsters that didn't fit into a given category. It's been five years in the making, but here is the updated count of each type of villain! Ghosts and animals are still the most common type of villains. Alien - 19 Animal - 68 Beast - 22 Cat Creature - 5 Clown - 9 Cryptid - 9 Demon - 29 Dinosaur - 10 Dragon - 9 Frankenstein's Monster - 10 Gargoyle - 5 Ghost - 162 Ghoul - 12 Gooey Creature - 17 Greek Legend - 17 Headless Creature - 8 Indigenous Spirit - 11 Knight - 8 Misc. Monster - 41 Mummy - 23 Mystery Inc. - 5 Non-Ghost Human - 51 Pirate - 9 Plant - 10 Robot - 27 Scarecrow - 5 Sea Monster - 39 Skeleton - 17 Snow Monster - 8 Stone Monster - 7 Vampire - 20 Vehicle - 5 Werewolf - 17 Witch - 15 Wizard - 10 Zombie - 19 Here's the updated pie chart of how all the percentages all come out! It was really fun to rediscover this project! Now that I've found this again, I definitely want to continue updating this as new Scooby content comes out. If you for some reason notice any errors, please let me know in the comments! If you want to download my spreadsheet for calculating this data, you can do so here:

A recent fun fact post talked about how "Scooby on Ice!" from Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? was not the first time that Tara Lipinski has done voice work for Scooby-Doo. Unbeknownst to most, she also voiced Grey in the What's New, Scooby-Doo? episode "Camp Comeoniwannascareya." This inspired me to do a deep dive project on all the guest stars from The New Scooby-Doo Movies and Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? to discover if any of them had previously had roles as other characters on the show (and I was surprised to discover quite a few of them did!). This post highlights all the guest stars from these two series that have had previous roles in other episodes before or after their first appearance in the franchise. I included both real-life celebrities and voices of fictional characters, such as The Addams Family and Wonder Woman; however, I did not include ones that were extremely famous voice actors (for example, Casey Kasem plays Alexander of Josie and the Pussycats, so it's obvious he's had other roles in the show). Janet Waldo, most famous for voicing Jane Jetson, played both Grandmama Addams and Josie in The New Scooby-Doo Movies. However, she would later voice several notable characters in The Scooby-Doo Show, including Scooby-Dee from "The Chiller Diller Movie Thriller," Lisa Vanaugh from "Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats," and Arlene Wilcox from "To Switch a Witch." We probably all know that Don Knotts would go on to voice the groundskeeper in the video game, Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights. Jackie Joseph, who voiced Melody, went on to voice a very random Scooby-Doo character almost 20 years later...Velma's Aunt Thelma from "Scooby Dude." This one is perhaps more well-known, but Tim Conway would later go on to voice Fred's dad, Skip Jones, in Scooby-Doo! Pirates Ahoy. He also voiced Professor Alexander Graham in the Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights video game. Moving on to the Guess Who guest stars, Rachel Kimsey voiced Wonder Woman. Later in the series, she'd also voice Marla and the chef from "A Fashion Nightmare!" If you thought Sandy Duncan and Cher were the only guest stars to have roles in both The New Scooby-Doo Movies and Guess Who, you would be wrong! Mark Hamill appeared as as himself in Guess Who, but he had previously voiced one of Jeannie's masters, Corey Anders, in "Mystery in Persia" of The New Scooby-Doo Movies. Mark Hamill previously voiced Snakebite Scruggs in Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island; Steve in Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders; Shifty in Night of the Living Doo; Deacon, Babyface Boretti and the store owner in Scooby-Doo! Camp Scare; and Zip Elvin in Scooby-Doo! Moon Monster Madness. Mark Hamill has also provided several voices of the side characters and villains in What's New Scooby-Doo?, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated and Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!. His What's New roles include Captain Guzman and Emperor Caesar Salidicus in "Pompeii and Circumstance," as well as Tommy's father in "A Scooby-Doo Christmas." He voiced Crybaby Clown and the Drill Sargeant from "The Night the Clown Cried" and "The Night the Clown Cried II: Tears of Doom" in SDMI, in addition to voicing General Stall in Be Cool, Scooby-Doo's "Area 51 Adjacent." Moreover, in Guess Who, he also voiced The Joker in "What a Night, for a Dark Knight!" and the Trickster in "One Minute Mysteries!". In addition to appearing as himself in Guess Who, George Takei also appeared as the White Wizard and Mr. Wang in SDMI. The Old Samurai in Scooby-Doo and Samurai Sword was also voiced by Takei. Malcolm McDowell had previously voiced the Sly Baron in Scooby-Doo! Moon Monster Madness in 2015 before appearing in the first season of Guess Who. Ending right where we began, Tara Lipinski voiced Grey in "Camp Comeoniwannascareya" from What's New, Scooby-Doo?.
I hope you enjoyed reading this article and learned something new about some of the guest stars! I'm treating this as a running list, and will update this post as guest stars from either of these shows make voice appearances in other episodes. The Ghosts of Scooby Content Past: Developed Scooby-Doo Series and Films that Were Never Finished7/5/2022 There's a lot of Scooby content out there that entered production, but was ultimately never shown to the world. From an official Scooby film fully animated in anime style to a movie that would have essentially been the result of mashing-up two DTV ideas into one, there's so much Scooby content we could have seen but never got to. Many of these ideas aren't necessarily common knowledge, so I wanted to highlight all of them in this post. The scope of this article only covers projects that were started and never completed, not existing projects that were significantly reworked (such as SCOOB! for example, which, fun fact, was originally going to be written by Be Cool writer Jon Colton Barry). I'm approaching this article as a new project that is a work-of-progress, rather than a finalized post. If there's any Scooby content that you're aware of that was officially confirmed to have entered development that I don't have here, please feel free to let me know and provide a link to a reliable source where you saw the info! Of course, we have to start with all the original versions of the show that Scooby could have been. The first of these was House of Mystery, which was heavily based on The Archie Show, which was popular at the time. The series would have featured Geoff, Mike, Kelly, Linda, and Linda's brother W.W., along with their dog Too Much, who played the bongo drums. Collectively, they made up the band Mysteries Five. Too Much was a large sheepdog, intended to have a resemblance to the Archies' dog Hot Dog. However, this was rejected because it was felt to be a ripoff of Marmaduke, and it was changed to a Great Dane. Later on, the show was changed to be more based on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis as opposed to The Archie Show. The title of the show was changed to Mysteries Five, the name of the teenagers' band. There was later one more title change to Who's S-S-Scared? after the kids' names were changed to reflect what we know them to be know: Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby. However, the show was rejected by CBS president Fred Stanton due to being too scary for young viewers. Thus, as we know, after some revisions the show was changed into what we now know as Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?. Did you know we could have had a live-action Scooby-Doo series in the 1970s? In my interview with Duane Poole in September 2021, he revealed that a very basic idea for a live-action show was pitched back in the 1970s. A screen test was performed for the concept, with Duane as Shaggy. A multi-universe series called Hanna-Barbera Babies was once pitched by Iwao Takamoto after the success of A Pup Named Scooby-Doo in 1991, but was ultimately never picked up. A young Hex Girls spinoff in 2000 was pitched but was never picked up. Above is an image of Thorn that would have been in the show. Scott Jeralds apparently pitched a series featuring Scooby's son according to an interview with the Unmasked Scooby-Doo Podcast, but it was declined in favor of What's New, Scooby-Doo?. Instead of Scooby-Doo and the Loch Ness Monster in 2004, we could have gotten a very different Scooby-Doo DTV. The original plan was to release a movie fully in anime style! In an interview with AWN, animation writer Tad Stones shared that after he left Disney, he wrote a script for WB titled Scooby-Doo and the Anime Invasion. However, the idea didn't get too far because parents didn't find the concept appealing. "Evidently kids loved the concept but moms weren't sure about it." Stones shared in the interview. A third movie in the Gunn live action film series was reportedly being written by Dan Forman and Paul Forley. However, the film was cancelled due to Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed not performing as well as hoped. James Gunn tweeted the plot in 2020, which was the gang going to Scotland to rid a town of monsters, but they discover the monsters are actually the victims. On a similar note, Brian Levant, who made the 2009 and 2010 live action films, said in an interview that if there would have been a third film, it would have been titled Scooby-Doo's Zany Time Travelin' Christmas Adventure. Another idea Levant had for a film revolved around Irish fairy tales. After What's New, Scooby-Doo?, we also could have had an entire series with the animation of the intro for Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra Doo. In 2004, talks had begun for what the next Scooby series would be following What's New. Dexter Smith was asked by WB to create designs for this series, but ultimately, WB went with Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue instead. However, the designs thankfully didn't go to waste. In 2009, Tony Cervone and Spike Brandt remembered Dexter Smith's designs and repurposed them in Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra Doo. Dexter discussed it in a blog post which has unfortunately been taken off the Internet, but the content can still be found at an archived version of the site. As an aside, there were also a few episodes of What's New, Scooby-Doo? that were written and ultimately scrapped according to this video. Here are some of Dexter's designs: A third movie in the Mystery Begins film series was in production, but it was cancelled due to Curse of the Lake Monster not performing well enough. The third film was titled Scooby-Doo's Zany Time-Travelin' Christmas Adventure in 3D. On February 2, 2025, Brian Levant posted the storyboards for the film on his Instagram page. The resumé of art director Ted Blackman informs us that Scooby-Doo! Music of the Vampire and Big Top Scooby-Doo were originally one movie, titled Scooby-Doo and the Circus of Vampires. Presumably, this was changed due to it being too similar to the 1972 horror film Vampire Circus and the plot was divided into two films. In an interview, the voice of Velma from Scooby-Doo Adventures: The Mystery Map, Stephanie D'Abruzzo, mentioned that she believed the puppet film was meant to be a pilot for a potential series, but the series never entered development. Jon Colton Barry has shared that he originally planned to write an episode of Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! featuring the Hex Girls. In addition, the Halloween episode was originally supposed to feature Scrappy. However, the episode was scrapped because WB wanted to do two 11-minute shorts instead. Apparently, according to the article The Hex Girls, How a Fictional Rock Band Become Cult, Queer, Girl Power Icons, Rick Copp also gets called from time to time about a Hex Girls spinoff that never took off. On January 6, 2022, character designer Tracy Mark Lee revealed on his Instagram page that there was originally going to be episodes of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? featuring Mel Brooks and Dolly Parton. He also shared that Stephen Silver had drawn character designs for Dolly and Mel, posting Dolly's on that same day. A few weeks later, on January 25, 2022, Tracy posted Mel's design on his Instagram account as well. The episode ideas were never used, because both celebrities politely declined the roles. In addition, according to a Scoobypedia interview with Chris Bailey, an episode featuring Michael Phelps and Jabberjaw, and a King Kong parody with Grape Ape were also considered. Presumably, the Grape Ape/King Kong episode would have been "The Lost Mines of Kilimanjaro!". A follow-up to SCOOB! titled Scoob! Holiday Haunt was announced on December 22, 2021 by Tony Cervone on Instagram, after previously being hinted in an interview in June. The film was set to be directed by Michael Kurinsky and Bill Haller, written by Tony Cervone and Paul Dini, and produced by Tony Cervone and Mitchell Ferm. The cast who voiced the young gang in the original SCOOB! (Frank Welker, Iain Armitage, Ariana Greenblatt, McKenna Grace, and Pierce Gagnon) were all set to reprise their roles. Mark Hamill, Cristo Fernandez, Michael McKean, Andre Braugher, and Ming-Na Wen also were a part of the cast. A test screening for the film occurred in April, and we also got a first look at the film on April 6, 2022. However, on August 2, 2022, after production had nearly been finished, the film was suddenly cancelled due to a shakeup in WB leadership with the Discovery merged. The new CEO of Warner Discovery, David Zaslav, cancelled the film citing his desire to move WB towards a more cost-effective theatrical model of films, and citing that he felt streaming projects were not as profitable. The film was still screened to the cast and crew, according to Iain Armitage on Instagram. The film was completed on November 5, 2022. On December 31, 2023, the design of the villain, which would have been Krampus, was posted on Instagram. According to a tweet by Bill Haller, the film would have been released the week after Thanksgiving in 2022 (November 27-December 3). Here is what would have been the description for the film: To celebrate Scooby Doo's first Christmas, 10-year-old Shaggy and the gang take him to a holiday-themed resort owned by Fred's favorite Uncle Ned. When the park is beset by a ghostly haunting, the kids must solve a 40-year-old mystery to save the resort and show Scooby the true meaning of Christmas. It may also be worth noting that the original SCOOB! was a much different film. The original version of the script featured Penelope Pitstop, Grape Ape, Atom Ant, and Jabberjaw. Captain Caveman was also originally set to have a much bigger role, and the Hanna-Barbera characters were presented as a Justice League/Avengers type superhero group. The film originally featured a zombie doctor, named Dr. Bandersnatch, who was possibly inspired by the Mad Doctor from The Scooby-Doo Show. The film also was going to be much more heavily based in Greek mythology, and appeared to be geared towards a more adult audience with more violence and some minor language. Check out some original concept art of the film here. In November 2022, an Amazon listing revealed a possible new Scooby film titled Scooby-Doo and the Haunted High Rise. However, in an interview, the director stated that it was cancelled due to tax write-offs. Another interview from the same channel also confirmed there was a potential Teen Titans Go! crossover in the works. On May 23, 2022, it was announced that a new series, Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Pups, would air on the Cartoonito block of HBO Max. The series was set to center around Shaggy and Scooby serving as camp counselors for three puppies, whom they teach their mystery solving skills to. The three puppies appeared to be stand-ins for Velma, Fred and Daphne. However, on March 3, 2023, one of the show's writers Roger Eschbacher announced that the show had lost its distribution rights with HBO Max, meaning that it is cancelled. While it's a shame that we never got to see the finished products of any of these films or episodes, it's really neat that some of them ultimately were repurposed, like the Circus of Vampires film and Dexter Smith's designs being repurposed for the intro of Abracadabra Doo. If anyone happens to stumble across any other Scooby projects that were developed but never released, please feel free to share them along with a reliable source of where you found it. I consider this to be a working project rather than a finalized article, so I plan to continue updating this whenever any new info about unreleased, developed Scooby series or films is found!
Hi everyone!
With all the discussion lately following Curse of the 13th Ghost about what's canon and what's not, SDF and I have been working on a project about what could be considered canon. In our definition, canon means that there are no continuity errors with other things in the Scooby-Doo franchise that would prevent it from being in the main continuity. Anything that is not canon would be discontinuous with another incarnation, or it somehow contradicts another Scooby-Doo episode, special, or film. The following is the canon we came up with. Some non-canon movies fit together nicely with others, such as the LEGO or live action films, and have been placed in a canon together. All incarnations under the "separate canons" category are all in their own, individual canons and do not fit together with anything else in the franchise. Some notes are provided where our placement might be a bit confusing. However, if there's anything you feel should be placed elsewhere, please let us know in the comments and we'll be happy to explain our reasoning as to why we chose to place it there. Main Canon A Pup Named Scooby-Doo Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! The New Scooby-Doo Movies Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? "Bat-Mite Presents: Batman's Strangest Cases!" Scooby-Doo! & Batman: The Brave and the Bold The Scooby-Doo Show "Bravo Dooby-Doo" Scooby-Doo! and the Monster of Mexico Scooby-Doo! Spooky Games Scooby-Doo! It was a lot of fun! :) Let us know what you think of the timeline in the comments!!! |
