Today is the final day of Scooby's anniversary month, and we have one more fan spotlight to wrap things up. Our fan spotlight today is Alexandra Rutt, who used to run a Scooby Facebook group, and also has been a reader of this blog for a while.
1. What is your name? Alexandra Rutt 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? Well, I’ve had two phases of being into Scooby-Doo. The first was when I was a kid. I remember when I graduated from Playhouse Disney to Cartoon Network, Scooby-Doo seemed intimidating to me because it was about monsters. The first episode I ever saw was Strange Encounters of a Scooby Kind. I remember my genuine surprise when the alien turned out to be a regular crook in disguise. I assumed this was a break from the typical supernatural encounter this gang of characters faces (especially given that the Scrappy-Doo intro featured real spooks). This rerun was followed by The Scary Sky Skeleton and by the end of this mystery, I realized that supernatural hoaxes were a typical outcome for this show. Still, I watched Scooby in various forms up until I hit middle school. The last episode I saw was Battle of the Humungonauts and I moved onto other interests. Aside from catching Samurai Sword on TV at the YMCA, I went seven years without watching Scooby again. One night in 2017, I was at a family gathering and got into a confrontation. I was rightfully sent upstairs and, out of boredom, started flipping through the channels. It was there I came across Be Cool Scooby-Doo (specifically, Where’s There’s a Will, There’s a Wraith). It was like being reunited with childhood friends who had moved away. It made me realize that Scooby-Doo was such a big part of my childhood and there’s still so much of it that I haven’t seen yet. 7 years later and I have seen every Scooby episode, movie, and tv special there is. 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? You know, it might be weird to pick something so recent but my favorite movie is Trick or Treat, Scooby-Doo. I don’t know where to begin with this movie. Trick or Treat was such a breath of fresh air after a long run of hit or miss DTV films. There’s so much love and craft put into every frame of animation. Coco Diablo was a memorable character and her interactions with the gang were funny as hell. I wouldn’t mind seeing her become a semi-permanent member. This movie feels heavily influenced by Ren & Stimpy and Adventure Time, and that deranged style of comedy is a good fit for the gang. It leaves you constantly guessing what will happen next, even if the mystery is pretty obvious. If I have one complaint, Daphne’s arc and resolution was half-assed and felt like it was from a different movie. I wish there could’ve been more movies by this creative team but in a way, that makes this movie all the more special. I couldn’t pick just one favorite episode. My favorite episodes are The Backstage Rage, Mystery Solvers Club State Finals, and Doo Not Disturb. I picked these three because they all represent what I would like to see more of in Scooby. Doo Not Disturb has a well executed mystery with genuinely clever clues. Not much else to say other than that is surprisingly rare in this franchise lol. Mystery Solvers Club State Finals is a hilarious exploration of an overlooked aspect of the franchise: the various Scooby clones that HB produced. All of the weird HB characters are perfectly captured and much funnier than how they were originally depicted. A lot of the modern HB fanservice projects like Jellystone and Scoob have left me cold but this episode does the concept well. The Backstage Rage is one I wasn’t sure about including because it doesn’t have the same impact now that it did when I was a kid but this is a kid’s franchise so it deserves to be mentioned. This episode scared the shit out of me as a kid. The first half of this episode has such an unnerving quality. The shot of The Puppet Master standing by the door, and the music cue that plays underneath, still creeps me out which is impressive. Once it comes back from commercial break though, it becomes more of a typical Scooby episode. 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? I’m not really involved in any sort of “fandom” anymore. I used to tweet with other Scooby fans, posted on ScoobyAddicts, and ran a HB fan group on Facebook but none of that interests me atm. I think the Scooby fandom has shrunk considerably from the Be Cool days (I’ll elaborate on that in a bit) and there’s not a lot of interesting discussion. I still have a very close relationship with James Dixon, who used to run Scoobypedia and now runs a separate Hanna-Barbera Wiki (I’ll tell him to link it in the comments). 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? My favorite show is Where Are You and my favorite era is the Be Cool era. Even though it’s universally beloved and iconic among Scooby fans, I feel like WAY is somehow still underappreciated. It has such a different tone than any other cartoon before or since. The stiltedness of the dialogue and animation actually work in its favor. It gives certain episodes a feeling of unease and as a kid, that can feel very dreamlike and creepy. I wish the franchise kept going in that tonal direction instead of focusing more on comedy and strictly following the formula. But still, the best era for the show for me is 2015-2018. This is the era that made me a fan and there was such a sense of excitement among the fandom. Everyone was still riding the high of Mystery Incorporated and standout DTVs like Frankencreepy. To say nothing of the fact that we had a new Scooby series that was completely unlike anything before (with writers eager to promote themselves and discuss their creative process). And there was a growing anticipation for projects such as S.C.O.O.B. and Curse of the 13th Ghost. Speaking of growing, the fandom also felt like it was reaching new heights. There were multiple Scooby podcasts and newfound interest in the franchise’s behind the scenes history. Unfortunately, the overall mehness of Guess Who, the mixed reactions to Curse of the 13th Ghost and Scoob, and the outright panning of Return to Zombie Island really destroyed all that momentum. Most of those podcasts don’t even exist anymore and the DTVs seem to have permanently been put to rest. It’s a real shame. I hope I get to feel that sense of excitement again about future Scooby projects. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? I would love to see some kind of follow up to Get a Clue. Mainly just to see Dr. Phibes or Robi return. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? I would like to see more respect given to the franchise’s varied and unique history, such as Scrappy and Get a Clue. However, I wouldn’t want to see it become self-indulgent and fanservice focused like other pop culture franchises. Something else I would like to see is creators who are more knowledgeable and passionate about the era of horror that influenced Where Are You. I’ve been doing some research into the horror genre in the 30s and 40s, and it's given me a greater appreciation for Where Are You and how it tries to emulate that tone. Long-forgotten tropes from that era are embedded in the DNA of the franchise. For example, did you know that actors in gorilla suit menacing damsels was a common cliche in movies back then? There were even actors like Charles Gemora and Steve Calvert who specialized in playing those roles. The creators of WAY would’ve grown up with those movies and used them as inspiration for Never Ape an Ape Man. Suddenly the premise of that episode makes a lot more sense. Forgive me for the tangent but I find stuff like this fascinating. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? The character I continually find myself fascinated by is Fred. He’s a bit of a rorschach test. I remember watching the Gunn movies with my mom and remarking at how much of a douche they made him and responded “well that’s cuz he was always so pompous in the original”. What’s interesting about that statement is Fred didn’t really have much of a personality in his original incarnation (though he did occasionally get some “Women, am I right?” quips in The New Scooby Movies). To her, and likely Gunn as well, Fred was a symbol of male chauvinism unjustifiably claiming Velma’s rightful title of team leader. But to younger fans, Fred is a cuddly golden retriever himbo. A perfect boyfriend archetype. It certainly helps that he has become so tied to his iconic voice actor, Frank Welker. It’s easy to view them as being one and the same. And then there’s his ever changing level of intelligence. Be Cool!Fred is an authoritarian but still hyper competent and the second smartest member of the gang. MI!Fred shares this competency but is absolutely clueless on social interactions and fetishistically obsessed with the concept of traps (hmm). WNSD!Fred is dumb but still skilled at planning traps. Pup!Fred is a conspiracy theorist imbecile and Velma is the one who comes up with the traps. To say nothing of the occasional snide jokes, among viewers, about his fruity fashion sense and what that may imply about his sexuality (though obviously he’s subject to this less than Velma). There’s a lot of angles in which to explore the Fred Man and I have a blast seeing Frank Welker tackle them. 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? This is going to be a weird answer but The Dandy Highwayman from Mystery Incorporated has always stuck out in my mind. He’s a unique take on the Scooby-Doo formula. A Scooby “monster” that is not monstrous at all aside from his seemingly supernatural powers. Instead, he’s a takeoff of romance novel cliches. A lot of modern Scooby monsters tend to just stomp around and loudly break stuff so it was cool to see an antagonist who is affable, charismatic, and more psychologically manipulative. And he still has a secret identity to be unmasked and a criminal scheme so he’s not a complete departure from the formula. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? I LOVE Dr. Phibes. I understand people’s criticisms of Get a Clue as a series but Dr. Phibes is such a well-developed and funny character. DeLaurentis specifically tailored him to Jeff Bennett, a very underrated voice actor, and Bennett imbues the character with so much personality and even pathos. Professor Pericles was a similar character but, IN MY OPINION, he was flatter and not as compelling despite being taken more seriously and voiced by a more regarded actor. The animation on Phibes is also hilarious and lovingly done. He’s basically the real protagonist of the show. It should be called Dr. Phibes Gets a Clue. 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? My Scooby “collection” is fairly scattershot. Just a few home videos, comics, and miscellaneous merch. What I do have that I am very proud of is several issues of Look-In Magazine from the 90s. This magazine featured exclusive two page stories featuring the 80s lineup of Daphne, Scooby, Scrappy, and Shaggy. The stories are mostly gag based but the art is gorgeous. It’s a shame more fans haven’t seen these stories but good for me since it’s easier to buy them lol. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? It’s hard to pinpoint because Scooby’s longevity really is miraculous. What I think helped its initial success is that it was the first cartoon where the women were treated as equal to men and were an active part of the show (or at least Velma was lol). I also think Scooby benefitted from the massive boom in horror fandom that started in the 80s. Takamoto’s character designs are so iconic and Scooby is a top 5 lovable cartoon dog. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? I actually used to work at the Cartoon Network Hotel! There wasn’t any Scooby stuff there though. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! I made this funny YouTube video a LONG time ago that I still think holds up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa0__syPaX8 Thanks to Alexandra for being our final fan spotlight this year! I've really enjoyed doing all the special posts on here this past month, between starting up the fan spotlights again, the daily polls, and the couple of retrospective posts I've done. I hope you all have enjoyed the special posts for the anniversary month, and here's to hopefully many more years of Scooby-Doo!

Today, our fan spotlight is Scubidu! Scubidu runs his own Scooby-Doo Instagram account, Diário do Scooby, and used to contribute to a Brazilian Scooby-Doo fan page. Here is Scubidu's fan spotlight:
1. What is your name? Hi, my name is Bryan but online I tipically go by “Scubidu”, which is how you’d spell Scooby-Doo here in Brazil where I live. It’s also one of the names the franchise got here when some comics were released in the early late 70s. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? I watch Scooby-Doo for as long as I can remember. They’d usually air the cartoon in the morning, right when I was at preschool, so my dad (who’s also a fan of the show) recorded it on VHS for me. Since always, it’s been my favorite cartoon and it ended influenced many of my favorite things, like slasher movies, whodunit-type of stories and mystery novels. 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? Favorite episode has to be “Which Witch is Witch?”. It’s a classic and there’s two of my favorite things in a Scooby episode – a witch and a swamp. The scene where Shaggy and Scooby disguise themselves as the swamp witch and Shaggy recites a made-up spell is pure gold. Also, I deeply connect with the one scene where the witch goes “Money, money, money!”. I wish I had a more original answer, but my favorite film is “Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island”. I think it has the perfect balance of darkness and humor, the characters’ personalities are just on point and the artwork is a stunning. Everytime I rewatch it, I notice more and more details that amaze me. It’s truly a masterpiece in my opinion. 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? From 2013 through 2017, I used to contribute to a brazilian fanpage. I really enjoyed it but, unfortunately, I had to quit to focus on college. I recently started a new fanpage called “Diário do Scooby” (@diariodoscoobydoo on Instagram) 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? Nostalgia aside, Mystery Incorporated and Be Cool, Scooby-Doo are my favorite series of the franchise. Mystery Incorporated because of the over-arching plot full of horror and pop culture references and Be Cool because of the characters development. Be Cool really felt like a love letter to the characters, even when they were poking fun on the tropes and the characters, they were never offensive. I wish people would give this series it's well deserved praise. Fortunately, I've seen a lot of people revisiting it and realizing how great it is. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? That's a sensitive topic, cause the last sequels we got weren't very good in my opinion. But if done right, I'd love to see a third season of Mystery Incorporated, more character-driven, cause I think there was so much going on on the second season (plot-wise) that we didn't have the time to see how the gang have grown and matured from the things they experience. I'd like to see more depth to Daphne's character and proper development of Velma and Marcie hinted relationship. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? I really want them to focus on the gang's interaction with each other, as the group of close friends we know they are, but lately I feel like this aspect has been overshadowed by cheap gags, celebrity guests, crossover and car chase scenes. Also, can we not WILLINGLY mess with the continuity? (Yes, I'm looking at you, Return to Zombie Island) 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? Velma was always my favorite character, cause I've related to her way of being methodic, not really loud and kind of on her own. But lately, we got a new thing in common, being part of the LGBTQIA community (at least in some incarnations, haha). 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? Lena and Simone. Cause they didn't start as evil villains, but were injusticed and then got corrupted. I like the subversion. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? Velma's sister, Madelyn. I love her dynamic with Shaggy and Scooby. I wish we saw more of her. #JusticeForMadelynDinkley 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? I have a small collection with 10 DVDs, a Scooby Apocalypse compilation and some figures. Unfortunately, I can't tell you everything in detail cause everything is in a box right now, cause I'm about to move. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? I think it's the fact that you will always relate to someone from the gang, cause they are all unique and diverse characters. Also, the franchise is always reinventing itself (it doesn't always turn out good though). 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? I'm an amateur music producer. If you search "I'm a Hex Girl (Spellbound Remix)", you'll find a dubstep-y remix for that song I made when I was 15. So cringe. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! Lately, I'm seeing a lot of people from the Scooby community being hostile to each other, to Scooby creators etc. I just wanna ask those people to be kind to each other. We're all united by a franchise that it's so gleeful, so full of love, we need to spread that. That's it. Also, thanks for having me here and thanks for the amazing work you do on this website, always with so much effort and respect for the fans and the franchise. Thanks so much to Scubidu for being our fan spotlight today! I completely agree with his thoughts on where the franchise should go in the future. I also really liked his thoughts for #14 about what a great community this is, and how important it is to remember to be kind to each other. To end off this fan spotlight, I have a bit of an exciting surprise. Although I originally planned for today to be the final spotlight, we actually have one more fan spotlight! The final spotlight will be posted on Monday, September 30 to end off this anniversary month celebration. Be sure to check back then for our final fan spotlight of the year! Our fan spotlight today is Juan, who just discovered the blog in the past year or so, but has already become a very active commenter on here and has contributed several fun facts on here. It's also worth noting that the image you see at the top of the post is something that Juan drew!
Check out Juan's fan spotlight below: 1. What is your name? I’m Juan. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? When I was a kid, my father taped “Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders” on a VHS. I’d watch that movie on repeat and love it a whole lot, and was pleasantly surprised when I realized that there was so much more Scooby content than that and also more to come! I don’t really know what it is about the franchise that I love. When I’m asked I don’t know how to put it, but it probably has to do with the characters and their fun dynamics. And the music! 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? My favorite Scooby-Doo movie is “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed”. That movie makes me smile, laugh and even cry sometimes. I know that it’s nowhere near a perfect movie, and many would call it a bad movie, but I love it. Always have, always will. When it comes to purely animated movies, I’ll go with the safe, boring option and say “Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island”, can’t go wrong with that. But I’ll add that I’m a big fan of “Aloha, Scooby-Doo!”. Now, my favorite episode. That’s tough. Especially since there’s a bunch of shows I haven’t gotten around to finishing yet. But I’m gonna say… “Foul Play in Funland”. The abandoned amusement park has super creepy vibes and I love that Charlie is technically the first “real” monster of the franchise. 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? Just here really. 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? To me the best series is Where Are You, it’s amazing how much it holds up despite being the first. But my top 5 consists of that, “What’s New Scooby-Doo?”, “The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo”, “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” and “The Scooby-Doo Show”. Regardless, I do enjoy all the shows except The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show. Haven't gotten to Velma yet, so can't really judge it. Now, the best era? That’s different. I think the best era for the franchise was in-between the early 2000s and early 2010s. The franchise rose in popularity and most of the content was consistent in quality. After, I wanna say, the KISS crossover DTV movie, the movies’ budget was clearly cut down, and other things like Kate replacing Mindy as Velma didn’t help maintain the same level of interest I once had. I still love Scooby, but in my personal opinion right now the franchise is pretty much a walking corpse as of now. Most movies and shows are either crossovers to promote other brands or nostalgia bait, and there was a time in which Scooby could stand on his own. I miss that. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? There are two answers to this one. I’d like a “sequel” of sorts to “Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf” so the cliffhanger is finally addressed (And we may be close to it, since Werewolf Shaggy made a cameo in Return to Zombie Island as an unsolved caper). But ever since I was a kid, I always wanted a “Scooby-Doo! And the Loch Ness Monster 2”, I love Shannon Blake and the other characters in the film and also its vibes and atmosphere. Justice for Shannon! She needs to come back. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? Hiatus. No content for a while. Sorry. Maybe harsh. But it needs a breather. And then yeah, sure, come back stronger. Also, they should hire more people that are invested in the franchise. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? Daphne. Ever since I was a kid. Everyone always dismisses her and says she’s useless… but she’s so not! She’s awesome. I was lucky enough to grow up in the era in which they decided to make her “street smart” and have her use her “girly” attitudes to her advantage. I previously mentioned Aloha, and one of my favorite moments in that film is when Daphne pulls herself back up from a cliff with dental floss. I also love the moment in which she frees the gang from the cage in Scooby-Doo 2 with her make up. She is awesome. And, while this attitude and side of her was definitely incorporated in more modern iterations, Daphne still had personality and a little bit of sass in the early cartoons, you just gotta watch the episodes! 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? My favorite villains are probably Fred’s parents from SDMI. They even changed their faces to go ahead with their plan. That’s next level villainy right there. Now, my favorite *monster* is most likely Charlie the Haunted Robot. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? I don’t know if Flim-Flam counts as a recurring character since he was part of the gang and a main character in one of the shows, but if he doesn’t… then I’m gonna go ahead and say Shaggy's sister; Maggie/Sugie. 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? It’s little, but I have a bunch of clothing, toys and books. And the DVDs, of course. I hope to someday have most, if not all, Scooby-Doo content in physical media! 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? Well. It’s a talking dog, y’know. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? I have a pet turtle. A big thank you to Juan for being today's fan spotlight! Even though the anniversary is over, we are still doing fan spotlights every Friday until the end of the month. Be sure to check back next Friday for another fan spotlight! Today at 10:30am EST officially marks 55 years of Scooby-Doo! Today's fan spotlight is Dzsasztin, a Scooby-Doo fan from Hungary who is a frequent commenter on this blog. Dzsasztin also is active on Scoobypedia, and enjoys making AMVs and fan edits on YouTube.
1. What is your name? Hi everyone, my name is Dzsasztin, which is a rare name in my country, but it's basically the Hungarian spelling of the common english name, Justin. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? As a child I've seen some episodes of The Scooby-Doo Show on Cartoon Network, the first one I remember is "A Bum Steer For Scooby". The mystery solving theme and the nighttime setting in a cartoon really captured my attention. Later when I found out there are several incarnations of the series, it was really fun for me to notice how each iteration differs from one another. 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? My favorite episode is "The Man in the Mirror", because back when Mystery Incorporated's final few episodes aired, I was really hyped and this one was especially cool, as I am a fan of both the mirror-world concept and secret codes, and the way Fred helped Velma with the code through the names of the places they went to was really clever in my mind. My favorite film is "Legend of the Phantosaur", the direction, the characterization and the storytelling are all at their best in that one. 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? I've made youtube edits which may or may not tried too hard to be edgy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOZYB5xmN9k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STAH6ilKA-s Other than that, I collect data and edit the Scoobypedia sometimes, but I mostly just comment on the Scooby Snax blog. 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? The best series is without a doubt Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, every other revival tries to get back to the basics and with good reason. As someone who has seen both What's New, Scooby-Doo? and The Scooby-Doo Show before ever seeing the original, I was blown away by how excellent and distinct the SDWAY atmosphere is, something that was never properly recaptured. But the best era for me, is the early 2010s: this line of DTVs is my defining version of the gang and their dynamics. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? Mystery Incorporated sequel with the mystery school teased at the ending could be great, but I also really want at least a full season of episodes in the style of the 2010s specials, Spooky Games, Haunted Holidays, Mecha Mutt Menace etc. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? An adaptation of the Scooby Apocalypse comic would be neat. DC comics has a history of multipart animated movies based on their comics, I think Scooby Apocalypse in two movies could do the story justice. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? Fred is my man, his eternal enthusiasm towards mystery-solving is one of a kind, as a person who has a moral code, referred to in-series as his boy scout ethics, someone who takes charge when needed, but also ready to give it to others, being normal as a personality but also having a number of special interests that only come up at times (that he is equally enthusiastic about). I could really see myself in his shoes growing up. 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? That title goes to Lena Dupree and Simone Lenoir, as a child, they were the villains who actually scared me. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? Vincent Van Ghoul. When I watch the made-for-TV movies right after 13 Ghosts, I actually miss him. 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? I have a comic collection, a few figurines and my self-made Scooby Snack box, which usually has some cereal in it. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? The idea of young sleuths is appealing to people. The idea of young sleuths who actively hate and try to avoid investigating is still a unique concept to this day, that almost never happens, even though they tried to make a ton of Scooby copies, the way Shaggy and Scooby complement the other members of the gang is a rare dynamic, which works great if done right. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? I have an orange ascot in my wardrobe that I used to wear in middle school, thinking it's a normal accessory to have. At one point others started to follow the trend, but mostly it was just me basing my life on cartoons. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! My friends asked me to play Fred in their Halloween cosplay group, without knowing just how much I love the franchise. In the end I recommended them specific episodes to help them get in their character and we roleplayed during the whole event! The hair spray I got couldn't convincingly make me a blonde, so I stayed a brunette, but hey, if Robbie Amell could pull it off... Thanks so much to Dzsasztin for being today's fan spotlight! I hope you enjoyed getting to know him a little better and reading his post! Happy Friday everyone! I'm really excited to be doing these fan spotlights again. To start us off, our first fan spotlight of the year is Rey. Rey is a Scooby fanfiction writer, and is also active in the Scooby Discord community, as well as being a regular commenter on this blog.
1. What is your name? My online names are Rey and Jayden, anyone can pick which one to use, most people online call me Rey. My @ is threephantomrey on all of my accounts. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? My Scooby origin story is pretty similar to most people's. I grew up with Scooby Doo. The earliest I can remember watching Scooby was when I was 3 years old. My dad is also a Scooby fan and grew up with it too so he bought me Scooby DVDs and I would put them into this little gray TV I had in my room or the TV downstairs early in the morning and just watch Scooby Doo. I had stopped watching Scooby for some time, and then in 2014, I started keeping up with the DTV movies and never stopped since. 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? My favorite Scooby series is The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo, and my favorite Scooby movies are Loch Ness Monster and Curse of the 13th Ghost. We'd be here all day if I listed all the reasons why I love them, so I'll just give a few for each. Loch Ness Monster: I remember watching it the most when I was very young when I had it on DVD so I have nostalgia for it, it has my favorite Scooby song of all time "Brothers Forever," and because it feels like a warm hug from an old friend. 13 Ghosts: The plot, introducing us to Vincent Van Ghoul, the silliness, the atmosphere, the fact that every ghost from the chest is unique, and the dynamic of the gang! Curse of the 13th Ghost: The way Daphne is written in this movie, her outfit, the way Vincent is written and his outfits, teenage Flim Flam, learning that Vincent's ancestor Asamad Van Ghoul is the 13th ghost, introducing us to Mortifer Quinch, learning that Vincent accidentally opened the chest when he was younger, the Asamad redemption explanation given by Velma, and for being the reason why I'm obsessed with 13 Ghosts! (I already liked it in 2018, but the movie got me to love it more when the trailer dropped in November 2018) 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? I write Scooby fanfiction! Mostly for 13 Ghosts, and a lot of them are about Vincent and Asamad, who are both my favorite non gang members and my two favorite characters of all time! I also had a fan account that was mostly about Scooby from 2018-2022, sometimes I make Scooby related videos on youtube, sometimes I make Scooby edits, in 2023 I made a 13 Ghosts discord server, and also in 2023, I joined a discord server for Scooby fans that I'm still in. Everyone in that server is lovely and I'm so glad to have them as my friends, and I post a lot about Scooby on Tumblr. I also had been in some other Scooby servers too. I love interacting with the Scooby fandom! 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? I don't have an answer for best era, or even favorite era, since a lot of my favorites are from different eras. If I had to pick one, it would either be the 2000s or the 2010s since 2000s has What's New, Loch Ness Monster, and Where's My Mummy, while the 2010s has 13th Ghost, Legend of the Phantosaur, and Shaggy's Showdown. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? I need another 13 Ghosts sequel because I want to see Asamad and Vincent again and see them interact with each other. Also, as Asamad's #1 fan, I want to hear his voice and learn more about him. I also want to see Mortifer again, and see Zomba, Rankor, and Marcella again too. I would also enjoy a sequel to Ghoul School because I would like to see the Ghoul School girls again, and I need a Reluctant Werewolf sequel because that movie ended on a cliffhanger. I don't need a Cyber Chase sequel, but I would love to have a Cyber Chase in modern day, and I'd love to see Dapper Jack Rogers again in not a sequel, but a prequel of some sorts. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? I'd love to see a series that has the gang traveling through time, or just a series that takes place centuries ago or centuries in the future. I'd also love to see a series where the gang are shown to be in college. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? My favorite members of the gang are Daphne and Fred. I just think they are really fun characters. Fred always makes me happy and I think Daphne is the gang member that has had the most growth throughout the franchise. 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? ASAMAD VAN GHOUL AKA ASMODEUS!!!! I love his story and I always thought it was interesting. Other favorites are Zomba because of how creepy she is, Rankor because he can possess people, Marcella because I loved the interactions between her and Vincent, Professor Phantazmo because his Circus of Living Evil was really cool, and the green ghosts from SDWAY because I love their designs. Another favorite of mine is Aphrodite from SDMI because she was creepy, and the concept behind her was really interesting, and I love the execution in the episode. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? VINCENT VAN GHOUL!!! He appears threatening at first, but he's actually really nice and helpful, and I love his dynamic with the gang. I also love Scooby Dum because he makes me smile and Marcie Fleach because she was such a good character. 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? Unfortunately, I don't have a collection. I threw out all my old DVDs years ago, but I do have the Vincent Van Ghoul doll and I bought a Scooby toy for my dog recently. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? I think it's a mix of the lovable characters, the franchise trying new things over time, the dedicated fanbase, and the franchise catching the attention of both younger and older generations. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? When I was 4 years old, I dressed up as Velma for Halloween. Also, the game Minecraft made me want to become an artist, and I'm good at bowling. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! I'm a good swimmer and I enjoy golfing. Something I really enjoy in the Scooby fandom is seeing people's collections. they are always fun to see! I hope you enjoyed reading this week's fan spotlight and getting to know Rey a little better! If you're interested in reading any of their fanfiction, you can check out their stories on AO3. Be sure to check back next Friday for another fan spotlight! 53 years ago today, Scooby-Doo aired on CBS for the very first time. To finish our 13 days of celebrating with fan spotlights here on the blog, I’m super excited to introduce you to the final fan spotlight of this year, Corton! Corton is a regular reader of the ScoobySnax blog, although you may know him better under the username Gibby Norton here on the blog! He also is somewhat active interacting with some Scooby-Doo fans on Twitter. The picture you see above is a sign Corton made at his college back on September 13, 2019. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the franchise, he handed out Scooby-Doo graham crackers and gummies from the table to anyone who passed by on that day! Corton is also responsible for a viral tweet on social media related to something involving a rice krispy treat! I’ll let him tell the full story (which is perhaps the most interesting answer any of the fan spotlights have ever had for the “fun fact” question), but without further ado, here is our final fan spotlight! 1. What is your name? My username that I use on the Scooby Snax blog is “Gibby Norton,” but my real name is Corton Rider. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? I have just always been a Scooby-Doo fan! There is a home video of me somewhere stored at my grandmother’s where I’m barely a year old and playing with toys with my cousin while commercials are playing on the TV in the background. However, when the commercials end I very quickly drop everything I’m doing and rush over to the TV because Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! has resumed on Cartoon Network. Ever since around that age I have had the same continued dedication to the franchise! 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? My favorite Scooby-Doo movie has got to be Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost. While Zombie Island is arguably the more memorable Scooby movie overall, I think that Witch’s Ghost has an even better sense of mystery and a wonderful Autumn atmosphere that I just eat up! Not to mention the Hex Girls are great and that climax is absolutely stellar, allowing the movie to deliver two well-rounded adventures, both one of an unmasking villain story and one of a supernatural threat story. My favorite episode is a bit tougher, stuck between two choices: Where Are You!’s A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts and Mystery Incorporated’s All Fear the Freak. A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts is just this perfect episode of classic Scooby to me, featuring what could be seen as the generic monsters and locale that one may expect, but filled with a lot of genuinely funny jokes, tense moments, and spooky settings that make the episode endlessly fun to get lost in every time! All Fear the Freak is my other favorite because I think it has an extremely satisfying conclusion to Mystery Incorporated’s first season and even beyond that it is in its own right an episode that stands out for its legitimately scary villain and very interesting mystery. I can remember seeing the promo for the episode air on Cartoon Network and I wish so badly that I could find it again somewhere online to relive the excitement of anticipating that episode! 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? I’m not super duper involved in things online because I find the large amount of effort that others have already put in online to making the Scooby wiki, message boards, and podcasts and such to be very daunting when trying to think of something I would like to do, so my interaction with Scooby fans remains mostly on my Twitter account! I did eventually gain some courage and now do occasionally comment on posts on this very blog and on the Scooby-Doo subreddit as well! I also joined a Scooby group turned “Hanna-Barbera Wiki Fan Group” on Facebook run by my good friend who had his own fan spotlight on here last year, James Dixon. I interact with him and some others on there, it’s a lowkey environment so I think it feels very friendly and not like a competition of who is the bigger, more involved fan vibe that other groups have. Otherwise, I am mostly an observer and supporter of what everyone else is putting out. 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? My favorite era of Scooby is what I like to call the “Reboot Era” of 2009-2013. I’ve heard the term “Reboot Era” used before by some fans and I am unsure if I somehow got that to catch on with what very few comments I have made or if others just had the same thoughts that I had, but regardless I think it is a fitting title! We had a reboot of the live-action movies with The Mystery Begins, the DC Comics re-started over again from issue #1 with a slight retitling of their monthly releases, we got brand new video games (First Frights and Spooky Swamp) that brought their own style and storyline, the direct-to-video movies got a revamped art style and really cranked out hit after hit with those movies, Matthew Lillard took over as the voice of Shaggy, and on top of all of that we hit a really big reset button with the newest Scooby TV show at that time! This era really packed in a lot of content and it was all for the sake of both renewal and trying something different, or at the very least providing the same ol’ thing with fresher eyes than some of the stuff that had come before maybe had. My favorite series for certain is Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated not just because it has a very interesting overarching mystery, but because it also perfectly matches my sense of humor. It mixes in really fun jabs at culture with sometimes wacky humor, sometimes dry humor, and always very situational humor. I think that show is one of the funniest I have ever seen, and I think that that aspect of the show gets overlooked very often in favor of the more dramatic aspects of the show (which are great, too!) 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? Haha, can I say the easy answer of “I want SCOOB! Holiday Haunt to get a release”? Outside of returning characters such as the Hex Girls, Crystal and Amber, Googie, and others from various movies and shows, there isn’t really much that I would like to see happen. I think a reboot of 13 Ghosts would be a great idea for a limited series. And I guess by default I’d want an official third Zombie Island movie made by a devoted fan of the original just to at least kind of make up for what Return to Zombie Island did to turn off a lot of fans. I guess if I really had to make a direct sequel, I’d want a third movie with the theatrical live-action cast. I am unsure as to how realistic a live-action movie would be, but I would love for Warner Bros to give it the same treatment that they gave to Batman ‘66, where they made an animated movie that was designed to look like the same world so that the characters wouldn’t have to be aged up too much despite having the original cast return. An animated legacy sequel done by the guys who do the animation for those direct-to-video DC movies would be amazing! Plus I do think this iteration of the gang deserves a little reunion and official send-off story. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? In the future I would like to see the Scooby-Doo franchise continue to take risks. They’ve been doing that lately I feel by greenlighting both an adult animated series and a preschool animated series- two entirely new territories for the franchise! Even more recently they went a little nuts with their Courage crossover movie and I also appreciate- even if I can’t say that I outright like- that SCOOB! wanted to do more with the property. Try or fail, I always do admire seeing a real effort being made. I think too often we hear people say that they just want Scooby to be the exact same as it was when it first started, which could be great! But I also think that that can be hard to fully recapture without at least even the slightest of a unique spin by the people creating it. There needs to be a personal flair that the creators inject into a Scooby project for it to work, I think. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? My favorite member of the gang is Scooby-Doo himself! He is loyal and brave, while also silly and cowardly. I think that Scooby in all his iterations always comes across as lovable and funny, and I think that that is a testament to the power of that character’s simple charms and what he means to the people who write him. I mean, clearly other people out there agree with me on this because it is a literal plot point in Scooby-Doo (2002) that Scooby-Doo himself has one of the purest souls on Earth! 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? This one makes me feel very conflicted! I love many monsters from across the years, from the Phantom Shadows to Sarah Ravencroft, Gramps the Vamp to the San Franpsycho, and even that green werewolf from Where Are You to the Luna Ghost. However if I had to pick one, I may have to choose the season 1 version of The Freak of Crystal Cove from Mystery Incorporated. His presence is so unbelievably threatening and scary, and yet his rhyming schtick and his poeticness add a lot of mysteriousness and depth to the character. I think this villain was so interesting that they should have had him lurking throughout the entire season! 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? Despite my username I hope no one is expecting me to say Gibby Norton! I am a huge Hex Girl fan, and I think that their music and unique personalities really give them a lot to offer. Beyond them as they are a bit of an easy answer, I have to say that I love the entire supporting cast of 13 Ghosts! 13 Ghosts is such a great series and concept and I think that version of Mystery Inc truly does deserve a chance to shine in a reboot someday! 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? I definitely have a large movie collection in general, so there is a special cabinet in my bedroom that houses every Scooby movie and show on DVD and Blu-ray (and one 4K with SCOOB!). Beyond my special Scooby movie cabinet I have every LEGO set and I also have some random knick knack things such as the complete trading card set for Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, a ton of Scooby comics including every issue of Team Up, books, toys, CDs, video games, magnets, board games, keychains, stuffed animals, and just some stuff I stumble upon and happen to like. Where I was born in 1999 and Scooby was around for 30 years before that, trying to collect as much Scooby as possible feels more difficult and so I just try to focus on getting things that I just know I absolutely have to have and I make myself content and happy with those! 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? I think it is absolutely the characters that have made this franchise last as long as it has. The atmosphere of mystery definitely helps as a good hook, but people come back so much because they want to see these characters. They’ve changed over the years various times, from writing styles to voices. However the core idea of every personality has always been maintained in some capacity and it’s hard to not want to see how these characters evolve next and what adventures they go on! It’s the same reason that things like The Simpsons and SpongeBob go on forever- because even if someone doesn’t like one season (or in Scooby’s case iteration) it is still just so hard to say goodbye to characters you love so much. So they keep on bringing the Scooby gang back! 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? Back in November 2016 I was in my senior year of high school. In order to impress the girl I really liked I sprinted into one of her classes and threw her a Rice Krispie Treat (at the time one of her favorite snacks) and ran back out. One of the people in that class tweeted about it. Within 24 hours that tweet got about 200,000 likes and 100,000 retweets! And while I was not actually dating the girl at the time and I was not name-dropped in the tweet, you all just have to take my word on it. I promise it was me. I was the “romantic” inspiration for a trending tweet and people’s failed attempts at starting a Rice Krispie Treat challenge. The person who tweeted it is on private now, but at the time she even got sent boxes from Rice Krispies themselves. She gave me one tiny square treat as a thanks. I assumed Rice Krispie Treats only came in rectangles, but all I got for my efforts was a tiny square one. And now it’s 6 years later and believe it or not, but I’m finally with that girl I liked, haha! So I guess it turned out pretty alright. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here!
I don’t really have anything else that I need to say or promote! Support physical home media! If you love Scooby, give any new shows or movies a fair shot before judging! Just do whatever it is you can do to support Scooby that also makes you and you happy and doesn’t bring others down! Thank you so much to Corton for participating as our final fan spotlight! I just want to say that I really like Corton's sentiment in his answer to the fourth question. One of my favorite things about the majority of this fandom is the idea it's friendly and that it doesn't need to be a huge competition of who is doing the most or who has the biggest collection. Personally, I think that any amount of involvement in the fandom, even if you're just reading content and not interacting, is perfectly valid, and I love that most people in the fandom have that mentality! I want to once again give a special thank you to the thirteen people who participated as fan spotlights this year. I hope everyone enjoyed reading these and getting to know some new people who are Scooby fans! :) I’m really excited to introduce you to our fan spotlight today, Elemage. Elemage is a very active member on the ScoobyAddicts forum who has been a fan of Scooby since childhood, and is also a big Marvel fan.
1. What is your name? My name is Elemage. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? I've always been into Scooby-Doo, I grew up with all the reruns on Boomerang in the late 90's. I didn't really dive into the fandom until around 2015-ish? 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? My favorite episode would probably have to be the "A Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle" two-parter. It's the episode I have the earliest memories of. "The Night Ghoul of Wonderworld" and "A Nutcracker Scoob" are close seconds. As for my favorite movie, it'd have to be "Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase". It just has so many nostalgic memories for me. 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? My involvement in the fandom is pretty limited, which I'd say is because the fandom itself is pretty small. I'm on the Scooby-Doo subreddit, I follow a handful of DooTubers on YouTube, and I'm active on this lovely site (ScoobyAddicts). 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? In my opinion, the best era of Scooby-Doo is the "What's New, Scooby-Doo?" era. From the show itself to the 7 associated movies, it was just consistent. There have been higher highs and lower lows in other eras, but the What's New era is the most consistent and the most enjoyable. Plus, I very much liked that we got some new outfits, if only temporarily. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? Not exactly a sequel, and not exactly a (television) series, but I'd like the franchise to revisit "Scooby Apocalypse" someday. I feel like there was a huge missed opportunity in not doing more worldbuilding. Do the secondary characters like Marcie Fleach, the Hex Girls, Flim-Flam and Vincent Van Ghoul exist in that world? How did they react to the apocalypse? Did they survive? There's so many opportunities to explore in that world. Especially after the end where now there's a majority of humans and a minority of afflicted monsters. But for a traditional answer, I'll say I'd like a sequel to the original "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo". I think it's time for the little pup to get a redemption arc and I definitely think he has potential to fit into Mystery Incorporated as long as he's not paired up with Shaggy or Scooby. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? There's so much I could say here. But for me, I just hope for good storytelling, good characterization, and a healthy dose of respect for everything that's come before, from the Scrappy vignettes to Where Are You to Get A Clue to even the Harvey Birdman crossover. I don't want the franchise to be ashamed of what it's been and what it will be, which entries like Return to Zombie Island show they clearly are ashamed. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? My favorite member of Mystery Incorporated is Daphne. In fact, she's in large part the reason why so many of my favorite episodes, films and eras are my favorites. Not only do I love her aesthetic (purple is my favorite color), I just love her evolution from Danger-Prone Daphne to leader of the Scooby-Doo Detective Agency, a pilot and demon hunter, an international celebrity journalist, Make-Up McGyver and ultimately, a kick-butt black belt. All while still retaining her kindness and femininity. 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? My favorite villain is The Headless Horseman of Halloween. For whatever reason, as a child that episode felt so much longer to me (in a good way!). And his design was so fun, it's not too scary but not too silly. He was even iconic enough that they brought him back for the LEGO installments! 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? Hands down, the best recurring characters are the Hex Girls and it's not even a contest. And they always bring us a new song every time they show up! Vincent Van Ghoul is a pretty close second, but I'd argue that him, Flim-Flam, Scrappy and Marcie are as much members of the Gang as the core five. 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? I do have an unintentional Scooby-Doo collection, actually. Right now it consists of Where Are You: The Complete Series (the fancy, limited edition castle version), The (Almost) Complete Collection of The New Scooby-Doo Movies (darn it, Wednesday! Why are you still missing?!), both on Blu-Ray. My DVD collection is a bit larger, consisting of Cyber Chase, the compilation Monster Movies Collection (Legend of the Vampire, Where's My Mummy, Curse of the 13th Ghost, Franken Creepy, Loch Ness Monster, Witch's Ghost, Music of the Vampire and Moon Monster Madness), SCOOB! and the 50-Cartoon Collection. I also have the 50th anniversary Funko Pops for Shaggy and Scooby, as well as the limited edition Scrappy. Still need to get my hands on Daphne, Velma, Fred and the Hex Girls. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? As much as I love Scooby-Doo, I'll be the first to admit no one will ever accuse it of being intellectually stimulating. I think what keeps people coming back to it is the colors, the characters and the comfort it provides. People have grown up with this show, their children and grandchildren have grown up with this show. It's a part of their family. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? Something about me is that I'm huge into Marvel Comics. And I've noticed a ton of Marvel references in Scooby-Doo, which is funny considering Scooby's owned by the same people that own DC Comics. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! I hope one day we get a movie based around "The Dragon's Eye", the comic arc from Scooby-Doo issues 60-66. It really is one of the best Scooby-Doo stories I've ever seen. Thanks so much to Elemage for being today’s fan spotlight! I really liked hearing his opinion on why the franchise has been around so long. I completely agree that it provides a sense of comfort, and there’s a lot of nostalgia around the series for so many people. Tomorrow, we have our final fan spotlight of the year, plus a special editorial article coming, so make sure you don’t forget to check the blog for lots of new content tomorrow! Our fan spotlight today is Connor, who is a Scooby fan that frequents this blog and loves drawing! It was really cool to find out that he got into Scooby through his parents recording a Scooby marathon on VHS, since that’s the same way I got into the franchise! He’s also our only fan spotlight this year that drew his own image for the top of his post, which you can see above! Here is his fan spotlight:
1. What is your name? My name is Connor. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? My mom grew up watching Scooby Doo when she was little, so she decided to introduce Scooby Doo starting with my oldest sister, then my older brother, and lastly, me (the youngest). My parents recorded VHS tapes of a Scooby Doo marathon, and they also owned those two-episode VHS tapes in the early 90’s. When the DVD’s came out, they started collecting them. I believe a few years after I was born, we had the complete season 1 and 2 DVD, the Scooby Doo & Dynomutt Hour DVD, and Scooby Doo, Where Are You? Season 3 DVD to start out with. My siblings and I were introduced to Scooby Doo ever since we were toddlers, and over time, we started to grow up with Scooby Doo on our own. My family lived with the classics, but watched some of the middle era Scooby Doo shows and movies, but I am the one who went further than they did, and according to my dad, I’m the household expert. 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? That is a very tricky question to answer. There are so many great episodes and movies to choose from. “A Night of Fright is No Delight” and “Haunted House Hang-Up” are indeed two of my favorites, with the plot and atmosphere, creepy moments, and iconic villains. “Big Scare in the Big Easy,” “Large Dragon at Large,” “Block- Long Hong Kong Terror,” and “Camp Comeoniwannascareya” are episodes I think are great. Another couple of episodes are “The Night the Clown Cried” and “The Night the Clown Cried II - Tears of Doom!”. I enjoyed the plot of how the gang got back together after the events of the season 1 finale, and had to learn how to stop Crybaby Clown without Daphne (even if it was a short time), and I really enjoyed the climactic battle/chase with Crybaby Clown. As for movies, my favorite movie from the classic era is Cyber Chase, because I love the premise of Mystery Inc. getting trapped and traveling through the game their friend made, while also trying to solve the mystery behind The Phantom Virus. The moments where they meet their cyber counterparts and the final battle against The Phantom Virus are always my favorite scenes. “Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby Doo meets Courage the Cowardly Dog” is my top favorite of the modern era movies. It combines two of my favorite cartoons together in a very interesting plot that also gives an interesting explanation of Courage’s home town of Nowhere, and it is a movie I never knew I needed until the news about the movie dropped. Other great movies I would say are: Boo Brothers, Zombie Island, Aloha, Scooby Doo!, Where’s My Mummy?, Camp Scare, Mask of the Blue Falcon, and Stage Fright. Sorry for listing so much, it’s just not easy picking just one favorite out of everything else. :) 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? I occasionally visit your website for the latest news and be a part of the polls and community. I would also visit deviantartists, like Cybereman2099, to find inspiration for my drawings, and make sure to credit who and what inspired my drawings. I was thinking of creating a deviantart account and posting pictures of my drawings and just creating a world of heroes, villains, monsters and mystery. It might include some Scooby Doo elements, some Sonic elements, and a little bit of Spider-man in the mix. (Fair warning, most villains might be dragons or other reptiles that are either pure dragons or hybrids) 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? The best era of Scooby Doo is the classic era. While I enjoy all eras of the franchise, the classic era brought some of the best shows and movies, and basically became the foundation and building blocks for the franchise. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? I think it will be interesting to see a sequel film for “Shaggy & Scooby Doo Get a Clue!”. Since in the final episode, Dr. Phibes escaped and hasn’t been captured, it would be interesting to see Shaggy & Scooby (along with Fred, Daphne, and Velma) return and help Uncle Albert and Robi stop Dr. Phibes, Agents 1 & 2, and the rest of Phibes’ henchmen once and for all. The movie will have the mystery aspect, and some action and adventure like in the show. If it needed a more mystery aspect, it could have a mystery involving a hulking monster mech stealing advanced tech, similar to The Dragon from “Heart of Evil”. The cast will still be the cast we know and love, with Jeff Bennet reprising his role as Dr. Phibes and Agent 2 and Jim Meskimen returning as Robi and Agent 1, and maybe Matthew Lillard will voice Uncle Albert. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? Hopefully, I want to see the franchise to bring back the darker tone of the series like the four dark era movies or Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated, but still keep some or most of the formula, but this time, how about a little more real villains/monsters,with great story writing and of course, awesome chase music if possible. I also hope to see the franchise survive this wretched merger with WB and (UGH!!!) Discovery. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? Scooby Doo is my favorite character mainly because of his charm and big heart. While we do see him scared so much, he has shown signs of courage and bravery whenever the gang needs him, whether it's done with Scooby Snacks or by his own will, and he will jump into action to protect his friends and save the day despite his being scared. I do also enjoy his moments of being hungry, because I like to eat myself. Because of Scooby Doo, I learned that even when I’m scared, I can still be courageous and face my fears. As a bonus, he inspired me to draw and create one of my main characters. 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? This is also a tricky one to answer, there’s so many great villains. I already mentioned “A Night of Fright is no delight” and “Haunted House Hang-Up” having iconic villains, being The Green Ghosts and The Headless Specter, due to them being being absolutely creepy and being voiced by Hal Smith, who provided both villains with eerie and creepy laughs and cackles. The Phantom Virus is another great creepy villain with how he seems to enjoy causing mischief and mayhem and is downright menacing, and the same can be said for Mr. Hyde from Mask of the Blue Falcon. Crybaby Clown, Professor Pericles, and The Evil Entity are also amazing villains bringing their own charm and malice to Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated and indeed perfect for the dark tone the show has. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? Scooby Dum is one of my favorite recurring characters in the franchise. I love how he tries to be a detective but goofs up bringing some memorable humor and he just fits really well being a part of the gang now and then. I wish they could bring him back to continue being a recurring character. 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? I have almost every show and movie on DVD, some of the unreleased episodes I do plan on having mp4 files of until WB releases the remaining episodes on DVDs. I still have some of the VHSs my family had when I was little, those being Wedding Bell Boos, A Halloween Hassle at Draculs’s Castle, The Headless Horseman of Halloween, Reluctant Werewolf, three of the dark era movies, and the first three What’s New Scooby Doo era movies. I have the 3d platform games from the Gamecube, Playstation, Xbox, and Wii era. I have files of almost all of the Scooby Doo comics (there are still some old issues that haven’t been put on the internet yet) and some issues of the 2010’s, at least some of the issues from #100 to now. I have some toys and plushies, one of which I was given when I was little and still have to this day. I definitely have an almost completed collection of Scooby Doo music mp3 files. Lastly, I have a lot of books including coloring books, storybooks, the encyclopedia book, and the Scooby Doo Mysteries series. I have a big collection, so I can’t really tell you what all I have, so I figured I would list the big chunks of the collection. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? What I think has made the Scooby Doo franchise so popular is that it has everything for everyone. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? One fun fact I would say about myself is that I like dragons and werewolves, they look so cool and inspired me to draw one of my main characters, who is mostly a dragon, but does carry some wolf traits, and looks a little more wolf-like when he transforms. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! Thank you WildwindVampire for creating a wonderful website and letting me be a part of your fan spotlights. Thanks to everyone here on the website for being a wholesome community where we can share our thoughts, opinions, and other things about the franchise. I know we’re in dark times because of the WB and (UGH!!!) Discovery merger, but if we stay strong, spread awareness, support the creators, writers, animators, actors and many more, and support other movies and cartoons that are being affected by the merger, we could hopefully pull through this disaster. Best wishes for everyone! A big thank you to Connor for being today’s fan spotlight! We’ve only got two fan spotlights left this year, so be sure to check back on the blog tomorrow to meet another Scooby fan (and for the Monday fun fact)! Today’s fan spotlight is ScoobyVerse, a fan who runs his own YouTube channel and is quite active on Instagram and social media as well. ScoobyVerse also wants to become a voice actor, and cites Frank Welker among a few other voice actors as inspirations. Thank you so much to ScoobyVerse for being today’s fan spotlight!
1. What is your name? My name is Riley, better known as Scoobert.Scooby.Doo on Instagram and ScoobyVerse on other social media sites. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? When I was 3 years old there was a car malfunction and we took it to the mechanics shop. Inside the guy put on Scooby-Doo Where Are You, Mine Your Own Business. From there I was hooked. 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? I would have to say my favorite film is Scooby-Doo! And The Goblin King, brought spice to the franchise but still at the end of the day had a Scooby film at heart. My favorite episode would have to be It’s Mean It’s Green It’s The Mystery Machine. Such a fun episode from the What’s New Scooby-Doo era. The classic score sprinkled in, the eerie lights, and just the atmosphere of a seemingly Coolsville mystery. 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? I started my first involvement in the Scooby-Doo community back in January of 2020. Instagram was my main priority and still is to this day. I try to bring content and news in a refreshing and lighthearted way. Poking fun at certain situations in Scooby I feel brings people more drawn to him. 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? I would have to say 2010-2013 movies/DTV specials for Scooby. Abracadabra-Doo, Camp Scare, Legend of the Phantosaur, Mask of the Blue Falcon, Haunted Holidays, Spooky Scarecrow…etc. They bring such a cool and modern take at Scooby. The animation is one of the best and the stories really flow together. 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries, I would love a second season to the show. It was one of the best takes for the gang without Fred and Velma. But when it did have Fred and Velma, you just knew it was going to be a spectacular episode. Want that feeling again. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? I think we should have a bit more interconnectivity in some mysteries, have some character arcs ranging 2-3 movies like they did in Curse of the 13th Ghost-Happy Halloween. One of the best character appreciation moments from Velma was seeing her be obsessive to then show her just be scared of the unknown…that’s the reason why she was obsessive. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? Shaggy by far. He is the laid back guy that likes to eat. He is constantly putting his neck out to save his pal but still be a coward at the end. True bravery and great comedic relief. 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? The Phantom Shadows. They have such a cool motive just to see it backfire with the confederate dollars. Their schemes were immaculate and you could actually feel the fear they put into Scooby-Doo. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? Scooby Dum. He is just the greatest, he is so funny and such a cute dog. His appearances in Laff A Lympics were some of the highlights of the show. Wish he’d be brought back. 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? Yes, I have a collection. I own every available episode and every movie (with the help from your guide). Including the Operation Dog and Hippy Boy bonus disc. I also own a few Funkos, toys, comics, shirts. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? I think it’s timeless methods. It appeals to kids and works, it’s the reason we have so many films and 500+ episodes. There’s also a Scooby I feel for everyone, want comedic there’s Be Cool, into spies? Get A Clue…etc. It is a great franchise and I hope to see it for years to come. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? I am training to be a voice actor, Frank Welker has been one of my many inspirations as a kid. I remember trying to mimic all the sounds he could do. He is an absolute legend. As well as two of my other favorite voice actors, Jeff Bergman and Eric Bauza. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! I am also the first person to watch SCOOB! 1,000 times. Took around two years to complete 1-3 viewings every day since release. Happy Friday! With us as today’s fan spotlight is Graham, a Scooby-Doo fan from the UK who was a former police officer! He’s an active reader of this blog and the ScoobyAddicts forum, and loves watching Scooby-Doo with his family. Both he and his children love Scooby so much that they all continued to be fans into adulthood!
1. What is your name? Graham (Wish I'd put a little more thought into that now!) 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? I watched Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! first time around as a child. Been a fan ever since! 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? Fav episode I would say Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! Doo Not Disturb. It has great atmosphere, and one of the creepiest ghosts ever! Fav film, Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island. Scooby-Doo's big comeback, and it didn't disappoint! Great location, creepy looking zombies - and they were real! 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? Well, obviously I read the ScoobySnax blog :) I also browse the ScoobyAddicts Board - especially if I've just watched a movie or episode that I haven't seen before. I like to see the members' opinions and observations. 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? For me the best series/era is Scooby Doo, Where Are You!, but Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! comes close! 6. What one Scooby-Doo series or film would you want a sequel to someday? Wow, that's a good one. I'm going to say... Scooby-Doo! Music of the Vampire. Not necessarily a follow-up to the same storyline, but I'd love them to do another musical. I really liked that one. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? I'd like to see the DtV movies come back to having the supernatural be unambiguously real sometimes. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? As a kid I always had a bit of a thing for Velma Dinkley, so I'm going to say her. 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? Tough, but I'll go with 'Mother' from Scooby-Doo! Doo Not Disturb. Really creepy. 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? The Hex Girls, easily (although that's three - is that cheating?) 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? I do... Series (DVDs); Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! The New Scooby-Doo Movies The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? Movies (DVDs); Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase Scooby-Doo! and the Loch Ness Monster Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo Scooby-Doo! Camp Scare Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright Scooby-Doo! Frankencreepy Scooby-Doo! Shaggy's Showdown Scooby-Doo: Return to Zombie Island Happy Halloween, Scooby-Doo! Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob Scoob! 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? Lovable characters, exciting storylines, it appeals to both adults and kids, plenty of humour, the good guys always win, and it shows kids that scary things really aren't as bad as they seem. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? I was a police officer (UK), and sometimes I needed reminding there were nice things in the world. Watching Scooby-Doo did just that :) 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! I have a son and daughter (both now in their 20s). When they were very young I introduced them to Scooby-Doo. They loved it, and we still watch it together :) A huge thank you to Graham for serving as today’s fan spotlight! Graham was also a big help this past January in providing some suggestions to make the Scooby-Doo Continuity Timeline that SDF and I made even better, so I’d like to give a big thanks to him for that as well! :) |
