MAIN CHARACTERS
SCOOBY-DOO
Scoobert "Scooby" Dooby Doo is the main character of the series. Scooby is Shaggy's dog, and lives with Shaggy in his house, except for in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, where Scooby lives in a separate dog house that is much bigger on the inside than on the outside (sort of like the TARDIS from Doctor Who). Unlike most dogs, Scooby has the unique ability of being able to talk. However, in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, talking dogs are very common. Some series show him speaking broken English and putting an "R" in front of every word (much like Astro in The Jetsons), while other series show him speaking perfect English. Scooby is a Great Dane, and has many dog relatives (list below).
Scooby is known for being constantly hungry and thinking about food. In fact, Scooby has only been full three times in the whole series' run, one of the times being because he was hypnotized (Scooby-Doo! FrankenCreepy), another being after eating too much food in a candy factory ("The Haunted Candy Factory" from The New Scooby-Doo Movies), and the third being after eating an abundant amount of Funky Fritter Batter ("The Gruesome Game of the Gator Ghoul" from The Scooby-Doo Show). Scooby's favorite food is Scooby Snacks and is often bribed with them to do various things such as catch a monster.
Fred Silverman came up with Scooby's name in 1968, getting the idea from the syllables "doo-bee doo-bee doo" in the song "Strangers in the Night" by Frank Sinatra.
Scooby is very cowardly and is scared of monsters, ghosts, and various other spooks. Often, they are the ones to find the villain when the gang splits up. Most often, Shaggy and Scooby go together, and Velma, Daphne and Fred go separately when the gang splits up, but occasionally, Velma comes along with Shaggy and Scooby (although, one time [Toy Scary Boo from What's New Scooby-Doo?], Fred and Shaggy split up together, but found they have little in common outside solving mysteries.
Scooby's catch phrases are "Ruh-Roh!" and "Scooby Dooby Doo!" He is said to be 7 years old by many fans, but this was never confirmed in the show.
Voice Actors
Scooby was voiced by Don Messick until 1994 (Scooby-Doo in: Arabian Nights was the final time Messick would voice Scooby). In 1997, Don Messick passed away, and he was replaced by Hadley Kay, beginning with "Bravo Dooby Doo" (a crossover episode in Johnny Bravo). Kay was replaced by Scott Innes from 1998-2001. Innes stepped down from the role in 2001, and Frank Welker (the voice of Fred) took over the role, and remains in that role to this date. Scooby was also briefly voiced by Neil Fanning in the first two live action movies.

SHAGGY ROGERS
Norville "Shaggy" Rogers is a lanky, cowardly slacker who would prefer sleeping or eating to solving a mystery any day. His parents named him "Norville" but everyone calls him Shaggy. He always wears red bellbottom pants and a green v-neck shirt, except from 1985-1988, where he wore a red v-neck instead. As well as Scooby, he also has a huge appetite and has only been full twice. Despite his horrible eating habits, he manages to stay very skinny due to a high metabolism. His favorite food is cheese pizza with extra cheese and pickles. Both him and Scooby enjoy very strange food combinations. Like Scooby, he is also very scared, and possibly has a panic disorder in the 2011 movie Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur.
Shaggy is very athletic and was in gymnastics and track in high school (in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?). In "The Spirit Spooked Sports Show" from The New Scooby-Doo Movies, he is proclaimed the World's Greatest Athlete along with Scooby and later Tim Conway. He is also in the World Invitational Games in Scooby-Doo! Spooky Games along with Scooby.
From 1969-2001, Shaggy was not a vegetarian and ate meat often. However, after the argument about the Burger King commercial (mentioned above), Kasem said he would not come back as Shaggy unless Shaggy's character was vegetarian like Kasem was. The showrunners of What's New Scooby-Doo? agreed, and when the show began in 2002, Shaggy was made into a vegetarian. Kasem requested that the script be edited so that Shaggy did not ever eat meat (for example, if the script said Shaggy was to eat a burger, Kasem said they had to change it to veggie burger). From 2006-2008, during Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get A Clue!, Shaggy was not vegetarian (because Kasem didn't voice him in that show), but in the DTV movies, he remained vegetarian. When Kasem stepped down from the role in 2009, Shaggy returned to being not vegetarian, and continues to be to this day.
Because Shaggy is a hippie, some fans assume that there was a hidden subtext within the show that Shaggy smokes cannabis. Newsweek interviewed Kasem on the subject to try to figure out if that was true. Kasem said he was shocked and claimed he had never heard that rumor before he was asked. He replied "There wasn't anything like that at all" and said that Scooby-Doo was intended to be "a wholesome show from beginning to end." Matthew Lillard was also interviewed about the subject and said that there was no intention of trying to make Shaggy a drug addict, although he said he understood why people may think that.
Although, the creators of the first live-action movie put a scene in the movie as a joke, where there was smoke coming out of the Mystery Machine (supposedly because Shaggy was getting high), although it turned out to be just Scooby and Shaggy barbecuing. Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, two of the people who created the original Scooby-Doo show, were interviewed and said they were offended by the scene and denied that Shaggy was a smoker of marijuana.
Voice Actors
Casey Kasem, best known for his American Top 40 DJ job, was the voice of Shaggy from 1969-1995. In 1995, he quit being the voice of Shaggy due to an argument about being in a Burger King commercial (Kasem was a strict vegetarian and thought being in the commercial was against his moral beliefs). He was replaced by Scott Innes until 2002, when Kasem agreed to come back to the role. In 2009, Kasem's health began to decline and stepped down from the role of Shaggy (the last time he voiced Shaggy was in Scooby-Doo and the Samurai Sword). He handed the role over to Matthew Lillard in 2010, but continued to voice Shaggy's father in the first season of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. Scott Menville, who also had voiced Red Herring from A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, voiced Shaggy in Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get A Clue.

VELMA DINKLEY
Velma Dinkley is the smart one of the group. She often wears a short red skirt and an orange turtleneck (in "The Siren's Song" from Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated it was revealed to be because she has a bump on her neck). Velma enjoys solving mysteries, and worked at NASA in The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries. Velma's catch phrase is "Jinkies," and "I can't see without my glasses" (a running gag is that she often loses her glasses). Velma is said to have gone to the same high school as the rest of the gang, but in "The Spirit Spooked Sports Show" of The New Scooby-Doo Movies she graduated from a completely different high school.
In season 2 of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Velma befriended Marcie "Hot Dog Water" Fleach, but some fans took the relationship to be a lesbian relationship, due to various hints such as Marcie staring at a picture of Velma in episode 29-30's intro. Tony Cervone confirmed in 2020 that the two were officially thought of as a couple by the writers, alluding to that being the explanation why Velma and Shaggy's relationship in season 1 didn't work out.
Voice Actors
Velma has been voiced by many different actors (in fact, her voice actor has changed more than any other member of the gang). First she was voiced by Nicole Jaffe from 1969-1973, until she stepped down from the role because of her marriage. She was then replaced by Pat Stevens in 1976. During The Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo Show, she suddenly stepped down from the role in the middle of the series (episode 11, When You Wish Upon A Star Creature was the final episode she was in) for an unknown reason. She was quickly replaced in episode 12, "The Ghoul, The Bat and the Ugly," by Marla Frumkin. Marla continued to voice Velma in episode 12-15 of the show, but in episode 16 Velma does not speak at all. Marla quit the role in 1984 (the final episode she was in was "A Night Louse at the White House") and she was replaced by Christina Lange in 1988 (Velma didn't appear in any Scooby-Doo cartoon from 1985-1987). Like the many voice actors that preceded her, she quit the role in 1991. Velma, once again did not appear in another Scooby-Doo episode until the 1997 special, when she was replaced by B.J. Ward for 5 years. In 2002, she was replaced by Mindy Cohn. Cohn continued to voice Velma until 2015, except in Scooby-Doo Adventures: The Mystery Map where she was instead voiced by Stephanie D'Abruzzo. In 2015 when the show Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! premiered, Cohn was replaced by Kate Micucci, who according to head writer Jon Colton Barry fit the role of Velma in that series better than Mindy Cohn. Micucci has continued to voice Velma in all Scooby-Doo media to date.

FRED JONES
Frederick "Fred" Herman Jones is the unofficial leader of the gang who always wears a white shirt and orange ascot . Often, he is the one to set the traps for the monster, which sometimes fail. He has an on-and-off relationship with Daphne Blake, but it is often just hinted at that they like each other, except in Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, where they actually considered getting married. Fred can be bossy sometimes, but is generally nice. Frank Welker has voiced Fred in every series and movie (other than the live action movies), and is the only original Scooby-Doo voice actor remaining in the voice cast. In Scooby-Doo Adventures: The Mystery Map, Fred was incorrectly called "Fredward" for an unknown reason.
Starting in 1988 with A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, Fred was put in a more silly role for the show. Originally in APNSD, he was off-the-wall silly, believing in crazy legends such as molemen and pod people (from a magazine that he likes to read, The National Exaggerator), and blaming crimes on a bully named Red Herring. Later, in What's New Scooby-Doo?, he was still a bit silly, but he was more toned down to be less off-the-wall zany and more awkward. In Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Fred is obsessed with traps but struggles with his feelings. In Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, Fred is more of an authoritative leader who likes structure and at times a control freak.
In the alternate universe (that does not coincide with any other Scooby-Doo series or movie), Fred was kidnapped by Mayor Fred Jones, Sr., who was disguised as the Freak of Crystal Cove, a monster that he thought up from a dream. Fred meets his real parents in season 2, Brad Chiles and Judy Reeves (making his real last name Chiles).

DAPHNE BLAKE
Daphne Blake is the pretty, danger-prone girl of the group. Daphne has red hair, and wears a purple dress and sometimes a green ascot. Daphne is often called "the clumsy damsel in distress" of the group; she is often caught by villains. She has a crush on Fred Jones, and dates him in Mystery Incorporated and the second and fourth live action movies. In some incarnations, she was portrayed as a wealthy, sheltered girl.
In A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, she has a butler, who does various tasks for her at her calling. In this series, she is portrayed as a stuck up rich girl who enjoyed bossing people around, especially Fred. In the 1983-1985 series, Daphne solves mysteries with Scrappy, Shaggy and Scooby, many of them supernatural (a change from the original "Scooby-Doo formula). In Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, Daphne is not clumsy and danger-prone anymore, but instead a self-reliant, mature young woman who has her own TV series, Coast to Coast with Daphne Blake, on a channel named Americana.
In Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, Daphne is much more quirky, witty and kind-hearted. She often has very pronounced quirks each episode that sometimes aid in solving the mystery.
Voice Actors
Daphne is the character that had the second most voice actor changes of the gang, Originally, she was voiced by Indira Stefanianna Christopherson, but was replaced after 17 episodes by Heather North. Heather continued voicing Daphne until 1985, when she stepped down, and gave the role to Kellie Martin (North would later appear in the special Bravo Dooby Doo, and the Legend of the Vampire and Monster of Mexico movies). Martin quit the role in 1991, and was replaced nearly 7 years later (Daphne didn't appear in any cartoons for 6 years) by Mary Kay Bergman for three movies, until Bergman committed suicide in 2000. Grey Griffin has played the role of Daphne since 2001, except in the live action movies.

RECURRING CHARACTERS
VINCENT VAN GHOUL
Vincent is a mystical warlock who meets the gang when their plane crashes in The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo. After Shaggy and Scooby are tricked into opening the Chest of Demons, Vincent helps the gang capture the 13 ghosts. He often contacts the gang through a crystal ball. Vincent appears in every episode of 13 Ghosts. He also shows up again as a teenager in the 2019 sequel to the series, Scooby-Doo and the Curse of the 13th Ghost.
However, in Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, Van Ghoul is an actor in horror films instead of an actual warlock. He has acted in over 400 horror movies in this series, and many clips of his movies are shown throughout the series. In Chapter 19, "Nightfright," Shaggy and Scooby win an essay contest and get to have dinner with Van Ghoul, but instead of having dinner, they end up having to capture "Nightfright," a demon who wants to kill Van Ghoul. In Chapter 41, "Theater Of Doom," the gang helps Vincent put on a play about Friar Serra and his donkey Porto, but the play ends up being spooked by the real Mummy of Friar Serra.

RED HERRING
Red is the neighborhood bully who often teases Freddy in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. Freddy always thinks Red is the villain, although he never is except twice. One of the times (in "Night of the Boogey Biker") he is actually the villain, but Freddy wasn't allowed to guess it was Red because he promised Daphne he wouldn't for 24 hours. The other time was when the gang were babies, when Red tried to scare the gang by putting on a monster mask. He often says things like "That's not very funny," "I didn't do it Jones!" and calls Freddy a weeny (in "The Were-Doo of Doo Manor", he even gives Fred "The Weeny Award").

THE HEX GIRLS
The Hex Girls are an all female eco-goth rock band who first appear in Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost. Asked to perform at the Oakhaven Fall Harvest Festival, the girls meet Shaggy and Scooby while the guys were on their way home from Jack's restaurant, who believe they are real witches. They were an instrumental part of sending the real ghost of Sarah Ravencroft back to the other realm. After Sarah is imprisoned, the Hex Girls play at the Fall Harvest celebration with the festival's main attraction, a giant smug-looking turkey.
Later, the gang meets up with them again during Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire, where they become involved in another mystery at the Vampire Rock Music Festival. They are kidnapped during the festival by a vampire rock band. Once the mystery is solved, the girls return and explain that they were kidnapped by the band Wildwind in order to get them out of the competition. When they finally do get a chance to perform, The Hex Girls lose the competition to the gang's band, Those Meddling Kids.
The gang runs into them again at Fortescu Castle, where their music video filming is ruined by a vampire. This forms an inner tenseness within the group, as Dusk was too frightened to continue filming the video with Thorn and Luna thought they should continue filming. The girls eventually make up and invite the gang to be a part of their music video.
In Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Velma is an avid fan of The Hex Girls. When Daphne overheard Fred say in vain that he wished he didn't care about Daphne, The Hex Girls take Daphne under their wing and turn her into a featured artist on their new song, "Trap of Love." The girls also help the gang solve the mystery of Rude Boy and Ska-Tastics in "Dance of the Undead" by defeating the ghosts of the Ska-Tastics in a Battle-of-the-Bands. Later, the girls also help the gang find the key of water with the Planispheric Disk, by using their beautiful in-sync voices to help hit the correct note to unlock the disk.
In Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, the gang helps out Thorn, Luna and Dusk stop the ghost of Ester Moonkiller, who has put Thorn and Luna into a trance of being ultra girly and ungothy. Thorn is portrayed as much more violent in this adaption, as she admits to trashing her own house eight times in the past week for fun, and has a tranquilizer gun for if she gets too wild, labeled "in case of Thorn."

MARCIE FLEACH
Marcie, also known as Hot Dog Water (due to the fact that she sometimes smells like water that hot dogs have been cooked in), is a former enemy and current friend of Velma. At one point, she was an operative for Mr. E (part of that time was spent working with Velma), but had to go into hiding after she betrayed Mr. E for Velma. She ended up being brutally murdered by Professor Pericles, but in the alternate timeline, she is Velma's best friend, and are both part of a science team that wins the Tri-State Olympiad prize every year.
She and Velma have a complicated relationship, with some fans considering their relationship with Velma as a potential lesbian relationship. She affectionately calls Velma "V" and is in the intro for two episodes of Season 2 (when she became part of the gang as Daphne's replacement in "Tears of Doom" and "Web of the Dreamweaver"), where she stares at a picture of Velma (which in some fans' opinions is a confirmation of the lesbian relationship). Tony confirmed that Velma and Hot Dog Water were intended to be a lesbian couple on June 10, 2020.
