Weekly Poll #7 (Redo)

One of my favorite concepts that Scooby has done is lumping groups of monsters from the old Universal horror movies together. Pretty much every episode that utilized this concept is an automatic favorite of mine (except maybe "Who's Minding the Monster?" to an extent, because the joke about Dracula's wife being named Poopsie was dumb lol). This was originally Weekly Poll #7, and it was the second poll after I'd decided to make these weekly polls a permanent staple of the blog. Since it's getting close to Halloween, and the Universal monsters feel very Halloween-ish to me, I thought this would be a fun one to redo now. On the other hand, this will also mean making a very difficult decision, because it feels impossible for me to decide between "A Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle" and Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School. They're both just so good!

If you're interested in seeing the original results for this poll, they can be found here.

In the original 13 Ghosts poll, Zomba and Maldor tied. Zomba took the lead in this poll and won with 14 votes! Maldor and Asmodeus tied for second place with 10 votes each. Nekara was close behind in third with 9 votes, while Time Slime got fourth with 5 votes. On the lower end of the spectrum, Demondo got fifth place with 3 votes, Queen Morbidia and the Mirror Demon tied for sixth with 2 votes each, and Phantasmo only got a single vote. Captain Ferguson, Marcella, Rankor and Zimbulu all came in dead last with nobody voting for any of them.

Most of them are great, but the best of the bunch is still easy for me to pick. I'll go with one of my favorite Scooby movies on this one, Reluctant Werewolf, even though lot of the Universal monsters aren't particularly focused on too much in it except Dracula (they're still an essential part though). I enjoy that film too much to not choose it.

I'm still debating between Ghoul School and "A Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle," but yeah, Reluctant Werewolf is another solid one.

Won’t rank Super Scary Move Night because it’d be unfair to at this point. If I were to, it would be last

6. Who’s Minding the Monster- Easy last place here when taking out the Get a Clue episode. Nothing against it, it’s actually grown on me since I’ve last seen it, but it just can’t compare

5. Reluctant Werewolf- Good movie. Been a while since I’ve watched admittedly so it winds up here. All of the top 5 are very good

4. The Ghoul, the Bat, and the Ugly- Difficult to not rank this higher as this is a highlight of the Scrappy era for me

3. Ghoul School- Classic movie. It’s Ghoul School, what more needs to be said?

2. Halloween Hassle at Dracula’s Castle- Another pure classic. Those New Scooby Doo Mysteries two part episodes are awesome and this is one of the best episodes of the Scrappy era

1. A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts- This one wins pretty easily despite the list being excellent overall. This is a classic among classics

7. Super Scary Movie Night - doesn't quite compare to the others, but it is still one of my favorite Get a Clue episodes. I don't feel the Universal Monsters had the same level of presence as they did in most of these others. I like the Money Mummy that pickpockets people's wallets haha.

6. Who's Minding the Monster? - I like this episode for how authentically weird it is. Dracula's wife being named Poopsie was a bit annoying though lol.

5. The Ghoul, the Bat and the Ugly - I like how creatively they incorporated the monsters into the horror movie awards. The Shadow Creature is also the best villain of the first Scrappy series IMO.

4. A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts - such a classic. The other three are above it due to more creatively using the monsters IMO.

3. Reluctant Werewolf - I love the plot of Dracula trying to get another monster for a race when the wolfman goes on vacation. Even if it's zany, the Monster Road Rally is so much fun and this is such a unique contribution to the franchise.

2. Ghoul School - this may shock some people that this wasn't first, but I'm ranking these by use of the Universal Monsters trope rather than how much I like the episode/film itself. It's a very neat idea to have the guys teaching at a school full of the Universal Monsters' daughters.

1. A Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle - hands down my favorite episode of the Scrappy era. It's such a fun plot to have the gang be enlisted by these monsters to solve a mystery. Never fails to get me in the Halloween spirit.

I also always love a super weird and ridiculous Scrappy era episode, but it just can’t compare to that stacked top 5 for me

7) Ghoul School - Sorry but I personally don't care for this movie but I do like the first 5 minutes, the mirror monster scene and the last 5 minutes.
6) Super Scary Movie Night - I love Get a Clue but this episode is not very interesting.
5) Ghoul, the Bat, and the Ugly - I have always seen this episode as problematic due to its repetitive nature and its tonal inconsistency. Still, it is okay.
4) Who's Minding the Monster - Typical execution to an atypical and interesting / novel storyline for the franchise.
3) Halloween Hassle - Fred and Velma don't have much real involvement in the plot but they have the best Halloween costumes of the gang along with Scooby. I love the animation where Scooby is scared when the monsters are chanting "We want you."
The part where the guy says he is just about to put on his Halloween costume and turns into a werewolf is bizarre.
"The invisible man. He's gone too!" That part is hilarious.
Velma- "Whaaz going awnn!
This is an okay episode that I think would have been great if it had been crammed into eleven minutes. There's too much padding here.
2) Reluctant Werewolf - Vanna Pira is great. So is Dracula. I like seeing a braver Shaggy that still isn't too brave. Googie was a great girlfriend for Shaggy. I think it's funny that he seems completely disinterested in her for the first third of the movie where she seems obsessed. Then, it's somewhat the opposite for both but she cares enough to help him. Did anyone else notice the poor drawings used a lot of the time when Shaggy is in his human form? Sometimes his facial features consist of squiggles that faintly resemble a face.
Also, Vanna Pira has three quite different looks throughput the movie which I find very interesting.
1) Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts - What do you do when an episode hasn't any flaws? It gets the number one spot of course!

7. I'm surprised you don't like this film since I know you generally like the Scrappy era. What was it that you didn't like about this film?

3. Agreed that Fred and Daphne's costumes are the best! I do like how cute Scooby's costume is though haha.

2. Right?!? Shaggy does seem kind of indifferent/disinterested in Googie the first third or so of the movie and it's weird lol. Yeah, I noticed the bad animation when he's a human occasionally. Thankfully it isn't too often.

A Gaggle of Galloping Ghost:
This was a good episode. It’s cool that they have three legendary monsters: Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster and the Wolfman in one episode. All three of them were great and creepy villains. The gypsy was a creepy character. Big Bob Oakley is the first culprit to play different monsters and the one who said the I wouldn’t have gotten away with line.

It’s so weird the scene where Fred and Velma encounter Dracula in that room was shortened to where he turns into a bat on regular tv.

Enjoyable moments in this episode were that Scooby and Shaggy finding pickled vampire wings, werewolf snacks, fried moonbeams in the fridge then closed it saying it’s yucky. Them thinking that Frankenstein was under the sheet, trying to spray him with the hose but it was just a body figure and they ended up spraying themselves. Shaggy and Scooby parodying the mad scientist and his assistant. Scooby combing down the wire after the stuffed bat and eating Shaggy’s sandwich.

One of my faves of Where Are You. I love that they used the Universal Monsters! They were all amazing. It's cool that Big Bob Oakley was the first one to ever say the "meddling kids" line.

I didn't know they shortened that scene on TV. That's odd!

Yeah, I love all of the weird "spooky" foods that appear in this episode! I've always liked Shaggy and Scooby playing the mad scientist too. The ending is really cute!

The Ghoul, The Bat, and The Ugly:
I really liked this episode. It was so dark and spooky. They did a really good job incorporating the monsters in this episode.
Like, this episode is a perfect tie in to Halloween. Haha Shaggy said what would your husband say when running away from the lady dressed as the bride of Frankenstein.

The Shadow Creature was an excellent villain. He was so cool, creepy and menacing. I liked that he can move objects and create strong winds. I was shocked that Brandon Davies ended up being the culprit. He seemed like a really nice guy. Like, you can hear the niceness in his voice.

This is my favorite episode of the first Scrappy series. I thought they did a great job incorporating the Universal Monsters in a unique way. I loved the Shadow Creature as a villain and his power to create winds was so cool. I was also not expecting Brandon to be the culprit!
