Hey all, so obviously today isn't Monday and there's already been a fun fact for this week. After posting the fun fact every week, I also document it in a spreadsheet organized by episode/film, as a way to keep track of what fun facts I've already done about each episode. I was doing some cleanup on my spreadsheet over the weekend, and noticed that I posted the same fun fact two different weeks. It appears I'd forgotten to put Fun Fact #412 from August 1, 2022 in the spreadsheet that week, which led to the same fun fact being posted again as Fun Fact #473 on October 2, 2023. Obviously, it's no big deal, but I already had another fun fact pre-written for next week, so six months later, I want to right my wrong and re-do the duplicated fun fact.
Marla Frumkin had a minor role in an episode before voicing Velma from 1979-1984. Six episodes before she took over for Velma, she voiced Daphne's friend Wendy in "The Scary Sky Skeleton."

Perhaps one of my hottest takes is that I never minded Marla Frumkin's Velma voice as much as most people do. Don't get me wrong, it isn't very good, but I kind of find it bad in a funny way. Plus, being in episodes like Happy Birthday Scooby Doo and A Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle kind of gives me a soft spot for it

Lol I can understand someone finding it funny-bad. I wouldn't say I hate it or anything, but for me it's easily the worst Velma voice, no competition whatsoever.

It is probably overall the worst main Velma voice, although, I still don’t care for Kate Micucci’s outside of Be Cool, which is where her voice fits really, really well 4/24/2024 12:10:02 pm
Totally agreed, Kate would be my second least favorite animated voice of Velma. I also think she works really well in Be Cool, but doesn't sound as good as she does in that series in other DTVs/series. It's a shame they pushed Mindy Cohn out as I thought she was a much better fit.

To be fair to Kate, pretty much anyone would be a downgrade from Mindy imo (COHN not KALING of course lmao, the latter of which I don’t count in the main Velma voice actresses because I ignore that show entirely) because Mindy is my favorite Velma ever, though Nicole Jaffe, BJ Ward, and Pat Stevens all are excellent in their own ways 4/25/2024 12:22:15 pm
Don't worry, I clearly knew you didn't mean Mindy Kaling lol. I'd say Nicole Jaffe is my favorite Velma, however, Mindy Cohn is a close second for me. She was incredible as Velma and it would be very hard for anybody to beat her.

The thing with Be Cool is that it had excellent voice direction. For instance, Frank Welker himself delivered Fred's lines in more interesting way than ever before. So maybe that's why Kate worked so well with that team. 4/28/2024 09:06:28 am
I agree that Be Cool had amazing voice direction! All of the voice actors really shined in that series, and I think that absolutely could be the reason Kate worked so well there.

The biggest problem is not the voice, it's the acting. You can get over a slightly off voice if the performance itself is good. But Marla's acting was not good, especially at first. It was genuinely awful in The Ghoul, The Bat and the Ugly, but she got a bit better with each episode, even though it still wasn't really ideal even by the end of SD&SD. I found her more tolerable in NSDMy though.

I also found her more tolerable in NSDMy. I wouldn't say I had a soft spot for her voice because of my nostalgia for those two episodes like Matt, but it was better. Those four episodes of TSD&SD were rough imo.

I can agree with that

@Wildwind, I'll be one of those "uhm, actually" people and make a correction that she voiced Velma in 5 TSDS eps. She has one line in Ransom of Scooby Chief ("Have a good visit"). 4/24/2024 02:07:00 pm
You're right, I forgot she had that one line in "Ransom of Scooby Chief." I suppose it would have been weird not to have her talk at all, but it's strange that they paid her just to say four words in an episode lol.

I assume Marla, Frank and Heather recorded their five lines total during a session for a previous episode like Lock the Door, It's the Minotaur. It would be weird to bring Marla and Heather to the studio that day just for this. Frank at least voiced Duke in that episode too.

Honestly, good for Marla for getting that paycheck for those words only. I wouldn’t want to be associated with that episode any more than I’d have to be, so Marla and Heather are the real winners of that episode 4/25/2024 12:07:10 pm
@Becker Lol yeah, I guess it makes more sense that they just had them record their lines during "Lock the Door, It's a Minotaur" and likely paid the couple lines in "Ransom of Scooby Chief" they had as a part of that episode.

I checked out the first episode of Velma season 2, and it's worse than season 1. Fred is a born again Christian, instead of brains the serial killer removes men's Oscar Mayers, Norville has a hallucination of Fred rapping while he is covered in blood, Velma's mom and Fred's dad are screwing, Velma says "there's no sexual tension in here!" when she and Norville are in a coffin...yeah, you get the point. Also Thorn from The Hex Girls appears as a washed up singer.

"Oscar Mayers" lol. I know some people were hoping that season 2 would be better than season 1, but honestly, it doesn't surprise me at all to hear they doubled-down on the raunchy humor. With it being the most hated show in the franchise, the writers clearly knew they weren't going to be able turn it around and make people suddenly like the show, so they decided to lean even more into the shock humor. Fred as a born again Christian sounds especially bizarre though lol.

Fred rapping actually made me laugh irl. So far, this season is less annoying than the first season but still just average. 4/25/2024 05:21:47 pm
Obviously I haven't seen it, so those who have would know better than me, but none of the stuff listed above seems any worse than season 1 to me. Particularly the bit about Fred rapping while covered in blood, it sounds exactly like season 1's in-your-face attempts to be extreme and edgy lol.

Take this with a pinch of salt but runor has it that Scrappy is the villain, in velma. Not watching it to find out since I care nothing for the show, but I can confirm that scrappy is definitely in since I have seen screenshots of the show.

Life is good ignoring Velma. While y'all are watching all of that, I'll kick back and re-watch some What's New, maybe put on a classic Scooby movie

I really should have listened to Matt. The last episode was the worst ending I have ever seen. It's thousand times worse than the last finale or anything I mentioned from the first episode. All I'll say is that the writers knew everybody thought this was the worst damn show ever made, and they played into it to make it into the biggest troll ending in TV history lmfao.

I actually saw a Tweet that said what happened in the last episode, and I honestly can only laugh at this point. Hopefully that is the last I ever hear about what happened on that show

Isn't there still a Halloween special to come, or am I imagining things? 4/30/2024 11:53:47 am
Yeah, there's a Halloween special which the end of episode 10 sets the plot up for.

Can someone please help me with the name of Fred's dogs? He finally refers to them by name in "The Mystery of Teen Romance" at the diner (and now I have to backtrack the entirety of season 1 to put them in).
