Weekly Poll #9

Just a little note on this one, while most of these are self-explanatory, the following is what I was envisioning for the content on these sets (though I guess you can interpret it how you want!). The New Scooby-Doo Movies Complete Collection would essentially feature all the episodes on the "Almost" Complete Collection, though this set would include the unreleased Addams Family too. This poll is purely a fun, opinion-based question, so you don't need to avoid this option just because WB doesn't currently own the rights to the Addams Family episode. Laff-A-Lympics: The Complete Collection #2 would feature all the season 2 episodes. WB renamed Spooky Games to the "Complete Collection #1" on their site, which is where I got this name. I guess you could go either way on whether to include those 4 that weren't on Spooky Games (but released on the original two volumes). The Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Hour Volume 2 would feature the remaining 13 episodes of the series that weren't released on volume 1, so episodes 8-20.  Guess Who Season 1 would just feature the first 13 episodes of season 1, even though it's a bit unclear as to whether episodes 14-26 are part of season 1 or 2 at the moment (though I'm minded to believe the former). Scooby-Doo: The Complete Cartoon Network Specials Collection would feature the 8 "Those Meddling Kids" behind-the-scenes interviews, The Scooby-Doo Project, and Night of the Living Doo. I guess I wouldn't count Bravo Dooby Doo, which is a crossover that officially belongs to the Johnny Bravo series, as an episode on this set, but you could if you wanted.

Here are the results from last week's poll, and we seem to have a tie!
What is your favorite 1980s Scooby-Doo film?
Boo Brothers - 23
Ghoul School - 23

Reluctant Werewolf - 7

I'm talking about the Cartoon network specials. I think WB will never release them so i voted the specials

Gotcha. Yeah, I don't think they'll ever be released either, but from a completist standpoint I'd really like them to be!

I submitted my vote but honestly I want ALL of them. I'm one of those obsessive collector types that needs to complete sets regardless of expense or difficulty.

I collect Marvel, DC Comics, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars and Star Trek among other movie and television franchises. While all of the listed franchises (except Star Trek which is perfectly complete except for the currently airing Picard) have holes in their DVD releases, Scooby is among the most incomplete.

Seeing that Warner Bros has both the rights to the Scooby franchise AND an already existing Manufacture On Demand (MOD) archive that produces a great deal of their less popular content in barebones, inexpensive fashion, the missing pieces of the Scooby collection are inexcusable.

Sadly, as the demand for physical media dries up with the advent of streaming/cloud based programming, it seems less and less likely we'll ever see Scooby's dvd collection completed.

It worries me that society is so willing to move away from ownership of media so soon after we finally got a medium (DVD/Blu-Ray) that offers long term, durable storage. My DVD collection allows me to watch any of it at any time, truly "on demand". Growing up in the 70s we never dreamt of such a thing and to see the concept of owning a library of film and television come and go in my lifetime is almost unbelievable.

Streaming services routinely rotate, add and subtract content based on demand and/or licensing, meaning that while they take our money, we don't truly have unfettered access to the content we pay for. And like all rental agreements, it's less expensive than ownership but when the agreement ends, they still have your money and you have exactly nothing.

Haha, I feel that! I would honestly vote The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries, as I feel there are some good episodes in there! That's interesting to know that Scooby is the most incomplete, but I'm glad that Scooby is at least not the only big franchise with holes in its releases.

Agreed about it being inexcusable, but it's all about the money for them, so I think they're going to shy away from releasing stuff that there's even a slight chance of it not doing amazing (though The Scooby-Doo Show season 2 is still odd, given there should be nothing wrong with releasing that one).

I hope that's not the case, but I too fear that with the surplus of streaming services out there now. I much prefer DVD releases as well so I can have a physical copy, and it's surprising so many people are into streaming now. I suppose many prefer the ease of having something instantly at their fingertips wherever they go, even if it means not owning something physically. We are a very instant gratification focused culture. I worry about stuff disappearing too, so I have to hope DVDs triumph as the preferred medium for as long as possible.

"That's interesting to know that Scooby is the most incomplete, but I'm glad that Scooby is at least not the only big franchise with holes in its releases."

Well, Marvel might be missing more total episodes from their line up (8 seasons of the Netflix stuff, all the 90s Fox cartoons unreleased in North America, a few made for tv movies, 2 seasons of Cloak and Dagger and on and on) but at least in the case of Marvel the missing stuff is complete seasons or single movies. The willy-nilly way WB has released the Scooby stuff is extremely irritating to the collector type like myself. Still very grateful for your "How to Have a Complete Scooby-Doo Collection" page, btw.

Nothing would make me happier than a big release of previously unseen content (preferably in season sets like you've imagined for your poll but I'll take what I can get) to coincide with the release of SCOOB! but I'm not holding my breath.

Huh, interesting. I can't begin to imagine what the rationale for releasing so many random episodes (like 1 new episode per DVD set) is, other than sucking the consumer dry of their money. I would love if they rolled out a big unreleased season set to align with SCOOB!, but I'm not counting on it. They released those New Scooby-Doo Movies eps that we thought would never see the light of day for the 50th anniversary though, so you never know!

And thank you about the How to Have a Complete Scooby Collection Guide. I'm just glad it's helped so many people!

This does suck, but I don't feel it's entirely on the consumer. The average consumer doesn't understand rights issues or upgrading something to make it work on dvd. I think manufacturers split the market even more by trying to make Blu Ray huge, a lot of people just never bothered to upgrade but the fights from people over whether to have a show on DVD or Blu-Ray have probably made more wait for a later edition (I know it has for me Re: Steven Universe). There are also those that probably wait for prices to go down or for a show to be complete after being burned too many times in the past (Gunsmoke, Murphy Brown, etc.)

I hope DVD's continue, though the lower retailer space is not making me feel this is going to be the case, they may just end up like books and only the biggest get a chance. Frankly, there is just too much to focus on from youtube, to tv, to books, to news, to current tv, to streaming to ever watch it all and while this leads to a glut of content I cannot blame anyone who gets overwhelmed or feel they just wanna watch things once.

Either way, hopefully they finish off be cool scooby doo and the the new scooby doo mysteries, but I fear the day where the latest scooby movie only comes to boomerang.

Oh, no, I was just saying that it was on WB's perception of the consumer, not the consumer themselves. I think WB's DVD releases are only of material deemed "safe" so that they will get a huge amount of profit no matter what, whereas some people may avoid some of the Scrappy series, Get A Clue and Laff-a-Lympics because it's not "real Scooby."

I definitely don't blame anyone either for the shift in media (be it e-books or digital streaming services), although I'm an old soul so I much prefer physically owning the media haha.

Yes!! I hope they never stop releasing stuff on DVD! On a bit of a quirky end note, I did randomly have a dream the other night that they released a third sequel, this one to Reluctant Werewolf, and it was released exclusively to VHS to commemorate the 80s lol. Now that's something I'd like to see!

My comment wasn't directed at you directly Wildwind, was trying to reply to Grey's comment actually. I do agree though for the numbers, and I hate to say it but I couldn't really care if Get a Clue ever finishes on DVD, the episodes included on the 13 spooky tales dvd's seemed kinda dull.

Considering Be cool never finished it's dvd run I'm curious if that was just shrinking market or lack of interest.. I guess we'll know more when/if we get Guess Who on DVD

Not gonna lie I'd like to have it on VHS, I may not have voted for Reluctant Werewolf but I have a soft spot for it, my parent recorded for me once a Halloween block on VHS that I'd love to just transfer to DVD it was on USA like 25 years ago and has episodes of Rusty and Buttons the headless horseman scooby doo episode and caps it off with Reluctant Werewolf.

Yeah, I guess I don't blame people for not wanting certain episodes on DVD, even though I personally like Get A Clue. From a completist standpoint, I hope that they do release every episode of Scooby on DVD at some point I would say a combination of both caused BCSD season 2 not to be released to DVD.

Don't think I had Reluctant Werewolf on VHS (odd that I dreamed about it then, lol) but yeah I have a soft spot for it too. I loved it as a kid!

Looking at my collection with an eye to the economics, it is interesting that the most completely released (on DVD) franchises are the two with the most organized and vocal fanbases. Star Trek is totally complete minus only the currently airing Picard show and Star Wars is only missing complete season releases of the two non-canon shows Ewoks and Droids from the 80s.

While Scooby has a big fanbase, it doesn't rise to the organized, comic-con invading, vocal level of Trekkies and Star Wars geeks.

If we fans ever hope to see complete DVD releases of the various series or the whole franchise, sites like ScoobySnax are how it will happen. No pressure, WV.

I don't know if I've said this before, but I'm really sorry that the site for some reason likes to mark all your comments as spam and not publish them. It's happened for your comments at least 10 times, and I have to manually publish them, yet it doesn't mark actual spam comments as spam. Very strange!

Good point about Scooby not rising to that level of fandom. I think a lot of people still view it as "just a kids' cartoon" unfortunately, which is why we'll probably never see that level of commitment. Lucky us Scooby fans have places to chat like this, I guess haha.

Well thank you! I doubt WB is looking at the site, but it would be really cool if they are!

Although I love the Wednesday Addams episode, wouldn't fork out more money after getting the nearly complete collection, especially as the episodes have been chopped over time, the series will never be complete. Those 8 episodes are all very good and although it would be nice to have them on dvd, not sure I'm overly fussed

I respectfully disagree, but admit that I have a strong desire for everything in the franchise to be complete to have a truly complete Scooby-Doo collection.

Fair, enough, I agree, now if Warner bros were to turn around and say we've found the original uncut New Scooby Doo Movies I'd buy that in a heartbeat as I'd love to see what has been missing these last 20-30 years.

It's interesting to me that they did choose to permanently cut those scenes. Surely it would make more sense to just have a separate cut copy for syndication, then keep the master copy uncut?

I voted for The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries... but honestly, I’d like them to release everything. Especially also The Scooby-Doo Show Season 2. I’m still baffled why that hasn’t been released on DVD in completion.

I collect everything Scooby-Doo media wise... and it’s so frustrating how they just release an episode here, or a little short there on DVD. And it seems that has slowed down tremendously. And yeah with how everything is all about streaming now, I’m scared to death DVD/Blu-Ray is gonna go the way of the dodo. I like to be able to physically own it. Sure streaming is handy dandy... but eventually the streamed movies/episodes will go away being replaced with other stuff.

I wonder if that has anything to do with this generation? I mean I was born in 75, and to get something you’d have to purchase it on some kind of media. And this generation, streaming was what they grew up on. Yeah I don’t know... haha, just something that popped into my head.

I would honestly love to see them release everything too, which I know that's why this is a hard question. I was curious though if there was a specific series most sought after by Scooby fans for the next big DVD release. I don't understand why they haven't released season 2 of The Scooby-Doo Show either.

They seem to be slowing way down with releasing new episodes and it's frustrating!

As for new content, I'm not sure if has anything to do with generations. There had to have been something that sparked streaming services though...like an in between generation or a reason that it transitioned in the first place.

Like someone said earlier, I think if we will get any more classic series on dvd then it will be to coincide with the cinema release of SCOOB. So we can only hope until then. But I think it’s down to lack of sales. They look at numbers, not fan demand. Scooby and scrappy “season one” paved the potential way for the rest but it never happened. Richie rich and Scooby “volume 1” paved the way for more. This was five years ago and we never got another set. I think only the 2 or 3 films they churn out every year make money. Or else these would have stopped years ago.

I really hope so! Though friendly correction, the Richie Rich Hour Vol. 1 was actually released in 2008...so it's been 12 years we've been waiting for volume 2!

For me it's an easy choice. The Scooby Doo Show season 2. Even though I really like BCSD and The New Mysteries/New S&SD Show. The New Movies only needs one more episode to be released, so it's not a big deal

This baffles me as to why it hasn't been released. Between rights and possible poor sales, all the others that haven't been released make sense. There should be nothing controversial about The Scooby-Doo Show season 2 though, so I'm not sure why they haven't released it.

It is very strange that they've released 1 and 3 of that... even stranger that they keep saying the 3rd season is part of Where are you.

WildwindVampire link
1/27/2020 07:10:31 pm

That frustrates me too, and people seem to believe it. There's a rumor I've seen going around that the season was actually an attempted "revival" of Where Are You, which seems doubtful given it doesn't use the Where Are You intro.
