Weekly Poll #227

This was a bit of a tougher poll to make, as while the gang investigates a lot of cemeteries, they're rarely the main setting of the episode. I kept it to just the episodes where the cemetery appeared in more than one scene, or where the mystery took place in multiple parts of the cemetery (i.e. Granny Sweetwater's house being in the graveyard in "Chickenstein Lives"). I excluded episodes where the gang briefly visited a cemetery for only one scene (i.e. "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Werewolf," "A Good Medium Is Rare," "The Headless Horseman of Halloween," "Dance of the Undead," etc.)

Here are the results from last week's poll:
What is your favorite episode featuring a headless villain?
Haunted House Hang-Up - 35
The Headless Horseman of Halloween - 13
Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers - 7
A Scooby-Doo Christmas - 6
Party Like It's 1899 - 6
Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King - 4
Attack of the Headless Horror - 2
Scooby Dude - 1
LEGO Scooby-Doo: Haunted Hollywood - 1

Cemeteries are one of my favorite types of Scooby settings, so this was a really challenging list to make. All episodes/films here are great! Not a dud or meh episode in the bunch.

12. Shaggy’s Showdown
I actually just rewatched this last week and it’s still one of my faves from the last decade or so of DTVs. However, it doesn’t really come to mind for the cemetery theme.

11. Monster of Mexico
One of the best Scooby films, but like Shaggy’s Showdown, it doesn’t really come to mind for the theme, considering the cemetery only shows up for the last 10 minutes of the film.

10. Horror Scope Scoob
I really like the cemetery scene here and the “what’s a grecian urn?” joke remains epic. It not being a great finale to 13 Ghosts is what brings it down a tad, in addition to the remaining nine fitting the theme better imo.

9. The Mystery Begins
I think I like this movie better than most here (I’d say it’s my favorite of the live-action movies sans Daphne & Velma) and I thought the cemetery scenes were well done.

8. Chickenstein Lives!
This is where it gets hard for me. It’s much lower than I’d ever put this episode in most polls, because as has been discussed here before, I feel it is a near perfect representation of the tone of this series and one of my favorites. The cemetery scene was really cool here and fit the silly vibe of the series so well, especially with Granny Sweetwater’s house randomly being in the middle of the cemetery. I like the remaining seven a bit better but this is really solid.

7. Who Was That Cat Creature I Saw You With Last Night?
Despite that the cemetery/mausoleum parts weren’t the main focus here, I feel those scenes presented a unique, different take on a cemetery atmosphere compared to other episodes. I considered putting this below “Chickenstein Lives” but I kinda enjoy the novelty of this one a little more when it comes to the cemetery parts.

6. Boo Brothers
Putting one of my favorite movies outside the top 5 feels like a crime, but ultimately I think it’s justified considering this just barely qualified on the technicality of them driving through the cemetery at the beginning and then returning to it later. That said, this cemetery still feels really dark and foreboding in a way that makes it stand out imo.

5. The Spooky Fog
This is one I seriously thought of putting higher, but as I got to thinking about it, the cemetery scenes are definitely the strongest part of the episode here. Considering the writing isn’t quite as strong in the parts after the cemetery and drags on just a bit, I think I’m comfortable putting this here. That said, Don Knotts is an epic guest star and I still have a lot of appreciation for the skeleton who is clearly a guy in a bone suit taking his nightly stroll through the cemetery lol. https://scoobysnax1.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/2/2/13221939/published/224953527.gif

4. Chiller Diller Movie Thriller
The cemetery doesn’t show up for a lot of the episode, but I honestly feel this is a perfect Scooby-Doo cemetery setting. The cemetery parts are easily the best part of this incredible episode, and they have an amazingly creepy atmosphere.

3. Big Scare in the Big Easy
This is my favorite episode of the first season, and one of my faves of the entire series. The cemetery setting was amazing here and I love the villains as well. Incredible episode!

2. Legend of Alice May
I do feel the romantic drama brought this down just a tad, but it’s still a top-tier SDMI episode and one of my favorites of the series. One of the first episodes to come to mind when I think of a cemetery.

1. To Switch a Witch
This is a really great cemetery setting and the scenes in the cemetery are super memorable here. Although it was a difficult list to come up with, this was probably one of the most fun times I’ve had coming up with a list. I’m eager to see what everybody else chooses!

What the Hex Is Going On? would be in between Mystery Begins and Horror Scope Scoob. As is obvious by the fact I forgot it, it's a great episode but doesn't come to mind in terms of a cemetery for me.

Gathering Gloom would be in between Spooky Fog and Boo Brothers. It's a really fun episode and I enjoyed the joke around not wanting to typecast villains.

I believe The Gathering Gloom has been overlooked here, and I will throw my hat in the ring for What the Hex Going On deserving to be listed here as well with that Mausoleum scene being on the same level of focus as some others here

You're right on both counts, I added both of them to the poll. Thanks!

I'll go with What the Hex Going On. Funny enough, this one comes to mind for me when thinking about cemetery eps.

I voted for Big Scare In The Big Easy. The cemetery setting in the episode was strong and this episode itself is simply amazing.

Even though it wasn't my vote, I totally agree on the second part!

The Gathering Gloom:
I liked this episode. The Graveyard Ghoul, was a great, creepy and gross villain. I say gross because of all that drool. Him appearing behind Velma and Scooby after flashes of lighting was creepy.

It was funny that Fred, Shaggy and Scooby were going gaga over the Morta Bjorklnd’s daughters.

Count Evallo Von Meanskrieg was actually the culprit. Wow it really was the obvious suspect.

Daphne going crazy over chocolate was funny.

We see the origin story of how Ricky Owens first met Professor Perclies. Reminds me of how Shaggy met Scooby origin story.

Scooby being worried about Velma and she hugged him was so heartwarming, like the best I’ve seen them since the drama between them and Shaggy.

Haha Scooby just said you are a terrible sheriff and Sheriff Stone said you must be talking to my lawyer.

I liked the twist at the end of Count Evallo stealing from the gas company while the gas company was stealing from the Bjorklands. They get a lot of money and Count Evallo is free from going to jail.

Ricky Owens/ Mr. E and Professor Periclies coming together in the end even if it was for evil was nice.

This was a great SDMI episode and one of my faves of season 2. I really liked the graveyard ghoul, and the culprit being obvious but the gang not wanting to stereotype was hilarious. Yeah, the bit about Scooby being worried for Velma was really sweet. The twist at the end, and Scooby's comment were both very funny.

So now for my list. Won't rank Shaggy's Showdown and Mystery Begins, but from what I feel I can rank, we have a really strong set, and it is hard to pick a last place here, but I think I've come up with something

12. Make a Beeline Away From That Feline/Who Was That Cat Creature I Saw You With Last Night- This is kind of a first in these setting polls for me because this one isn't last because of the quality of the episode, this one is last simply because I don't really like the cemetery parts of this episode. I don't know if I've gone on my tangent about this episode before so you may just hear it again, but my deal with this episode is this: this is one of the most brilliant schemes ever come up with in Scooby Doo... and I just wish the episode itself capitalized on it more. Don't get me wrong, the scheme alone makes this one of the better SDS season 3 episodes, but I don't like the running around in tunnels and I don't really like the cemetery scenes. Frankly, I'd rather more time be spent at the Apartment complex, and more focus be on the gaslighting and stuff. Maybe that doesn't make much sense, but for me, this would be a perfect episode if it took the same approach as a season 2 Scooby Doo Show episode and really focused on the creepiness and just how messed up it all is, like Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats for example, and I don't really think the running around in the tunnels or the cemetery scenes that are here would add much to that

11. Horror Scope Scoob- This honestly comes to mind more as a tv studios and even a lighthouse setting for me for some reason

10. The Spooky Fog- For as much as I appreciate the skeleton taking a leisurely stroll around the graveyard, my favorite scene in this episode is actually when they are in town and the fog comes in. The cemetery scene is much better than any scene after it though

9. Monster of Mexico- I do find the cemetery scenes here to be memorable, it just comes up a bit short, but I like this movie more than a lot of people seem to

8. The Gathering Gloom- Really good SDMI episode and comes to mind quickly for the theme. Tough competition here

7. Chiller Diller Movie Thriller- I absolutely love this episode, but it actually doesn't come to mind as quickly for me as it would seem. My favorite settings in this episode are actually the train itself and Boothville, but the cemetery scenes are also really good for the most part

6. Boo Brothers- Struggled with where to put this one because the cemetery scenes are really good but don't come to mind as quickly, so just outside of the top 5 seems proper

5. The Legend of Alice May- Really awesome SDMI episode with a memorable cemetery scene, but it comes to mind just a tad less than my top four, as the school scenes are even more memorable to me

4. Chickenstein Lives!- This is absolutely one of my favorite A Pup Named Scooby Doo episodes. It may seem weird to see this above some of these other episodes, but the cemetery scenes are extremely memorable to me, this was one of the first episodes to come to mind for the topic, and like Wildwind mentioned above, this is a perfect representation for the tone of the series. It is a perfectly outrageous episode. I couldn't justify putting this ahead of any of the top 3, but if I could have put this higher, I would have

3. What the Hex Going On- It should be no surprise that this is my favorite episode on the list. I've stated many times that this was my second favorite episode of all time, and while there are some episodes that are getting up there with it, on its worst day, it is still top 5 of all time. The mausoleum scene comes to mind very quickly for me, it only gets third place just due to the fact that it is a shorter scene

2. To Switch a Witch- I have talked a lot about Scooby Doo Show season 3 recently, but the conversations have mainly had me bringing up my problems and critiques. Well let me rectify that by stating that this episode is not only the highlight of the season, but one of the best episodes ever made. This episode was a stroke of genius and completely executed it phenomenally, as opposed to my issues with MABAFTF. I could nitpick and say that I wish there was more clues, but again that is just nitpicking. So while I may be still on my island of the first Scrappy season being better than season 3 of the Scooby Doo Show, I would easily have this as the best episode of either season, and I feel I may not be alone on that one

1. Big Scare in the Big Easy- At the end of the day, it had to be the episode that I think of when it comes to cemeteries in Scooby Doo, and it may come as a surprise, but it is Big Scare in the Big Easy. One of the best What's New Scooby Doo episodes, a very prominent and memorable cemetery setting. Truly a wonderful episode and setting

12. That's a fair criticism. Weirdly the cemetery scenes kinda worked for me here, but I absolutely see what you're saying, and agree with you that it would have been cool to have more focus on that aspect of the mystery to be more in line with season 2. #MoreGaslighting

10. I'd say the fog scenes are a close second favorite part of the episode; the atmosphere of the cemetery (and my love for cemetery settings) makes that part just a bit better for me.

2. Completely agreed that this is the best episode of either season. "A Menace in Venice" and "The Creepy Creature of Vulture's Claw" are also up there for me as best episode of either of those two seasons.

12. #MoreGaslighting indeed. It is one of the episodes that hurts that it isn't better for me than it is. I really wish it was a favorite of mine, like all time favorite level because it had that potential

10. I feel like those initial fog scenes have an atmosphere and creepiness that I really feel is missing throughout the later part of the episode in the caves. The cemetery scene is definitely still good though, I can't fault you for having that as your favorite part of the episode, but the fog scene is probably one of the most atmospheric scenes in that entire series for me

2. A Menace in Venice is probably in my top 3 of the two seasons, along with Night Ghoul of Wonderworld

12. Tbh, It doesn't really bother me like it does you. I really like the episode and consider it one of the best of season 3.

10. I agree that the quality of writing took a dip in the caves. I would agree with you that it's one of the most atmospheric scenes of the series, but I still like the cemetery scene best. I honestly wish they would have spent more time in the cemetery running from all the different ghouls rather than having it be a one-and-done kind of thing. It would have made the second half of the episode much stronger imo.

2. "Night Ghoul of Wonderworld" is very good, although it doesn't rise above some of the others as favorites from those two seasons. There are a number of TSDS episodes I'd pick before that one, and if I had to pick a highlight from TSD&SDS from those two years, it would be "The Ghoul, The Bat and the Ugly."

Hey WildWind I've just came with an idea for a sequel to the SDWAY episode What the Hex Going On?.

It is called (The Witch of Wetherby Woods!) I hope you like it.

In the episode: Mystery Inc.go to visit their friend Sharon Wetherby who is all grown up now and will soon inherit her family home on the day after her birthday. However when they arrive their told about the legend of an evil witch living in the woods near the estate who of which holds a grudge against the Wetherby family. At first the gang thinks it is all nonsense. But then things soon take a term for the worse when the real witch herself shows up and threatens to turn Sharon herself into a witch if she does not abandon her family inheritance.
