We're going to do a very different type of poll this week! This is a poll I actually wanted to do last week following the museum poll, but I was on vacation, so I decided to hold it back until this week, since this is a poll where I wanted to be able to check a couple times throughout the day to respond to any potential discussion.
We've been doing a lot of "what's your favorite episode involving a certain type of setting/villain?" questions for the weekly polls lately. In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of debate in the comments about whether every possible option should be included in the poll, or if the options should be limited to only episodes/films where the type of setting or villain in the question plays a significant role in the overall plot. For example, two weeks ago with the museum poll, episodes like "Chiller Diller Movie Thriller" and "The Spooky Case of the Grand Prix Race" where a museum played a small role in the episode were suggested as options. There was also some discussion over whether episodes including Alcatraz should count as a museum since it is one in real-life, even though none of the episodes presented Alcatraz as a museum. I really appreciate when you all remind me if I've forgotten an option, or propose a potential option that people might want to choose. There are definitely times where I forget to include an episode, and I'm sure there will be times in the future where I forget options again. Two weeks ago, we started with 10 options for the museum poll, and we ended up with 26 different options by the end of the week. I was thinking it would be a good idea to do a poll like this to see people's preference of how broad you want the poll options to be, just so there's less confusion over what should count. I think it would be good to have most of us on the same page, so people aren't having to go back and revote multiple times because options keep being added. I'm sure I'll still forget to include an option somebody thinks should count every once in a while, and I'm happy to still add options as needed. In the past, I've tried to limit it to only options where the setting/villain play a prominent role in the plot, so that the amount of poll options don't get too overwhelming for people. However, I am open to making the polls include all possible options if that's what most people on here would prefer. The results of this poll will determine how I approach the options for weekly polls in the future. Obviously, the results of this poll won't please everybody, but I think it would be nice to establish what the majority of people on the blog want, so I can write up these polls with a clearer idea in mind of what everybody thinks should and shouldn't count. If you have any thoughts you want to share on this issue, feel free to share them in the comments! Here are the results for last week's poll: What is your favorite Scooby episode spotlighting an aspect of American history? The Loch Ness Mess - 19 Witch's Ghost - 12 The Spirits of '76 - 9 To Switch a Witch - 7 Gourmet Ghost - 7 A Mystery Solving Gang Divided - 5 Vote Velma - 3 Big Scare in the Big Easy - 2 World of Witchcraft - 2 Sweet Dreams Scooby - 1 A Night Louse at the White House - 0

Personally, I’m fine with either. I’d say the significant episodes are definitely the must-haves of course, but I don’t mind having stretches in a category if people feel they should be included, I just won’t rank them as high

I'm okay with whatever people vote too, although I'd say I'm slightly leaning towards only the significant episode just so the number of options don't get too unmanageable.

Only the significant ones. It can become too loaded when trying to include everything out there, and most of us won't even bother considering to pick the options that are basically adjacent to the topic (not helped that they usually get added to the poll a day or two later cuz they're so insignificant to the subject that they're easily forgotten)

That's been the thinking I've approached making the polls with in the past as well. I've noticed that a lot of the added options don't tend to be picked either, or if they do, they get maybe a vote or two max. I'm okay with whatever ends up being voted, but yeah, this is also my preference for how to approach the polls.

I guess the biggest question if that option wins is how significance will be determined, and what will happen if someone feels differently that an option should be included 7/30/2023 07:29:28 pm
I would consider "significant" to be anything where the setting/villain is a part of the episode for more than just one or two scenes. So for example, "Sandy Duncan's Jekyll and Hyde" wouldn't be included in the pirate poll since the pirates are only in the episode for a brief scene. Same with stuff like Camp Scare and "Chiller Diller Movie Thriller" being in the museum poll, since the museums only appeared for a single scene. If the "only significant episodes" option won, I wouldn't want to be super rigid or anything; I'd just probably not include any suggestions where the proposed option only had a brief scene or two with the villain/setting in the episode. I'm more than happy to discuss if anybody has a different definition of what "significant" should mean.

Personally, I would class significant as "How much of an impact does X have on the episode?" So for example, even though the Milo Booth exhibit was only in their briefly, it had a major part to play in the overall plot. That's how I look at it anyway. 7/31/2023 11:03:24 am
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I definitely see what you're saying but I would say I look at it a bit differently. While the museum in "Chiller Diller Movie Thriller" was the scene that helped the gang solve the mystery, it doesn't come to mind at all for me as a museum episode since it was only in that one brief scene. I would be interested to hear others' thoughts on this if anybody has any!

All possible options should be included

I’m going for the first one because I feel like it should be apart of the poll whatever it is is a huge part of the episode. Like Hassle in the Castle was apart of the beach poll. Yes the castle was on the beach but it was more of a castle episode.

All for me or another option is ensure the questions are worded in such a way that there can be no confusion, like, Which of these episodes featuring a museum as the setting for over half the episode is your favourite?

That's fair, I was kind of hoping this poll would establish a general rule for what should and shouldn't count so the questions wouldn't need to be worded so specifically, but it seems there's a discussion to be had in the comments about what qualifies as "significant" (see my response to your other comment above). I suppose if there's not agreement about it in the comments over the course of this week, I could always do another poll to narrow it down next week.

Overall do what you want to. Would be funny if this poll ended up a draw 🤣. 8/1/2023 03:56:46 pm
That would be pretty funny lol. Looking at the current results, it seems like one option is in the lead, so luckily I don't think that will happen.
