We had a really well-rounded assortment of votes this time! Every single episode got at least one vote other than three ("A Good Medium Is Rare," "The Phantom of the Country Music Hall" and "The Spirit Spooked Sports Show"). Even though it wasn't my vote setting-wise, my favorite episode of the franchise took the win this week (with my vote taking second place)!

A lot of great ones here (in terms of setting). But I went with A frightened hound meets demons underground, an underrated episode in general.

I wouldn't place it among my favorite settings here, but I agree the episode is underrated!

That's honestly fair, but the idea of a town underground is really cool.

This is quite literally impossible to decide for me. I'd give it to half of them if I could. I guess I'll just go with High Rise Hair Raiser because it's the most frightening setting in the whole franchise for someone with acrophobia.

While it's not my vote, I agree it's one of the best settings of the series. Both the construction site and Netty Crabbe's house had an incredibly dark tone to them, arguably one of the darkest of the series.

My votes for Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats. This episode had a very dark spooky setting. The hotel takes place on Skull Island, the hotel looks pretty empty just the desk clerk, Mr. Dracul, Uncle Leon and Lisa. There’s a room full of coffins and bats that fly around the hotel.

Lots of incredible settings here making it tough to choose, but I will go with the same one. It's one of the darkest episodes of the franchise and I think they do an amazing job making the hotel setting terrifying here.

GOAT tier (Among the greatest of all time): High Rise Hair Raiser, Harum Scarum Sanitarium, Frightened Hound Meets Demons Underground, Chiller Diller Movie Thriller, Spooky Case of the Grand Prix Race

My vote is close between High Rise Hair Raiser, and Frightened Hound, but I will go Hair Raiser as being the best setting of the series (along with the best episode for me lol)

I'm not sure why The Tar Monster seems so low in the ratings. I thought all the settings were memorable, I can vividly picture them. The campsite, the buried city, the inner sanctum, all executed very well imo. 3/13/2023 08:34:55 am
Not sure about Matt, but for me I thought the settings in "The Tar Monster" weren't utilized as well as they could have been. There was a lot of running around which kinda goes back to my issue with season 3 prioritizing the antics over focus on the setting/mystery, but I know we don't agree on that so I digress. It's definitely a good setting though, it just has never been a favorite for me.

Yeah, I've made it no secret I'm a TSDS S3 defender lol. Well, except The Jaguaro, that's dumpster trash; even though the setting itself isn't particularly one of the problems — the way it was utilized is though. 3/13/2023 10:10:06 am
Agreed, that episode is among the worst of the franchise for me. The second half of "The Warlock of Wimbledon" is also really bad IMO.

It's easily the worst episode of the first decade of the franchise

@Becker- I do like the episode and could probably justify putting it one tier higher, but I do feel like the buried city could’ve been utilized better

"Some screaming cat guy" lmfao 3/13/2023 01:53:57 pm
@Matt Completely agreed, it's one of the few settings not including the Scrappy shorts that I would consider to be bad. Like I mentioned in my settings article a month or so ago, it's not easy for a setting to ruin an episode for me, but this is one of the few rare examples where the setting majorly detracts from the episode.

Glad my ultra-accurate description brought some laughs lmao 3/13/2023 02:51:54 pm
I agree with you that the plot is much worse than the setting, especially the headhunter parts. I moreso just meant that the extremely poor utilization of what could have been a cool setting made the plot even worse than it already was IMO, which I can't say I feel about any of the other pre-Scrappy episodes. Even the setting for the second part of "The Warlock of Wimbledon" doesn't really factor into my dislike of that part of the episode. The issue with that episode is more that the plot is so chaotic that the setting doesn't have an opportunity to be used well. With Jaguaro, the plot doesn't necessarily directly affect the quality of the setting, both elements are just bad on their own.

I can get behind that. At least for me, it isn’t the worst Scooby setting when that wretched Scooby of the Jungle exists lmao

Excuse my curiosity but what does GOAT Tier: mean?

Frightened Hound meets Demons Underground probably should have taken it but for one reason of another Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats called to me. An island you can't runaway from is always a good setting.

Agreed! I'm a little surprised to see how much people love the setting for "A Frightened Hound Meets Demons Underground!" It's a great setting but I wouldn't put it among the best of the entire series personally.

Personally I feel it is extremely unique and I'm unsure we've seen anything truly like it elsewhere.

While the Jaguaro episode is frankly not very good, I'd personally argue that it is not the worst episode of that decade. That dishonor would either go to Phantom of the Country Music Hall or Spirited Spooked Sports Show.

I wouldn't call "The Phantom of the Country Music Hall" the worst of the series, but I find it kind of boring. I definitely disagree with "The Spirit Spooked Sports Show;" that's actually one of my favorite episodes of that series. Why do you dislike that one?

I definitely disagree, especially on Phantom of the Country Music Hall. I wouldn’t put either of these in a top twenty worst of the decade list

Wildwind, it is just a personal dislike on my part due to the fact that I am not a sports person and it seems like that is all the episode offers. I am sure a sports fan would view this episode differently.

That makes sense. I wouldn't call myself a sports person either and I enjoy the episode. The high school/sports arena is utilized really well as a setting IMO, the fact that it all takes place in the dark on a foggy night makes the episode feel a lot creepier. The fact that they used the setting to explore so many different sports within the episode also helped the setting's amount of enjoyability, but that may just be me.
