It's time for our final poll of the Haunted House poll series! Next week, we'll be combining all three winners from today's poll and the previous two weeks, and facing them off against each other to determine the Scooby-Doo episode that does the classic haunted house trope best.

The results for last week's poll were very interesting and kind of all over the map. A majority of the options got three votes or less. "A Fit Night for Bats" and "The Sludge Monster from the Earth's Core" both got zero votes. "Scooby's Roots" got one vote; "The Hand of Horror" and "A Night Louse at the White House" each got two votes; and "Wedding Bell Boos," "A Bicycle Built for Boo!" and "Ghost Who's Coming to Dinner?" got three votes each.

Taking a look at the top 3, "The Were-Doo of Doo Manor" came in third place with seven votes. I was predicting this episode was going to win, but "Scoobygeist" ended up coming in second place with a total of 11 votes. Our winner this week got twice the amount of votes as any other option. "Bravo Dooby Doo" took the win last week, amassing a total of 22 votes!

Very tough. Escape from Mystery Manor, A Haunting in Crystal Cove and Night Terrors are so great and iconic. I will go with Mystery Manor though. But I cannot express how close these all are.

I'm honestly still a little conflicted on my vote, although I think I'll go with "A Haunting in Crystal Cove." "Escape from Mystery Manor" is a close second though.

Man, there's a lot of SDMI haunted house episodes. Shouldn't Nightfright also count?

While all of those SDMI episodes are awesome, I gotta go with Hich Tech House of Horrors. It's a top 3 WNSD episode imo, and WNSD is my 2nd favorite Scooby show, so it kinda checks out.

High Tech House of Horrors:
I liked this episode. The gang being trapped and everyone else being trapped in a high tech house was spooky. They dealt with haunted houses before but this is a high tech haunted house. That’s so creative.

The opening scene with Janey Miller looking into the mirror and a scarier reflection shows up and the water over flowing was creepy and intense.

Hearing Shari’s laugh throughout the episode was creepy.

Shaggy and Scooby trying to cook a burrito, instead the kitchen is trying to cook them up.

The various Daphne’s scaring Shaggy and Scooby were creepy.

Jeeves the robot was a good villain.

Bobby doing that to his little brother was pretty on called for. That’s to dangerous to be a joke.

The culprit being the house itself was pretty interesting. Shari did it because she wanted all the attention and did anything she can to get it.

The final scene of her trapping everyone inside and they all ignored her, then she freaks out, wind started to blow and she finally shuts down was intense.

I loved this episode! It was a great way to update the classic haunted house joke. Yeah, that opening scene is super creepy! Shari's laugh was definitely creepy, as were the various Daphne's and Jeeves. I was really surprised the house ended up being the culprit. I agree with you that the final scene was intense!

Mystery of The Missing Mystery Solvers:
I really liked this episode. Shaggy and Scooby going to mystery solvers awards was a good plot. The opening was funny with Shaggy and Scooby hitting Robi and the delivery guy with the door.

I enjoyed the other mystery solvers. Sammy The Shadow, the Spencer Twins even though they don’t look anything alike, the gorilla Coco who acts like a human, and Dr. Zazlock acts like a primate, the British detective Chad Chadington having unfortunate luck.

It was cool that we see clips from movies Monster of Mexico, Lochness Monster and Pirates Ahoy.

The setting of the mansion where the mystery awards was held at was a creepy setting. People disappearing after a flash of lighting was spooky. The knight coming to life and trying to cut off peoples head off was spooky.

The monster coming out of the picture and chasing Shaggy and Scooby was creepy. The monster chasing them also had a cool design. The Halloween Guy was also a pretty creepy villain.

It was funny that Shaggy and Scooby were throwing stuff and didn’t even notice that they were hitting the monster and the knight. Scooby started hitting people after he ate a Scooby snack that granted him strength haha.

The Halloween guy was Phibes and his henchmen were the monsters, delivery guy and butler. It nice that they were able to defeat them.

Shaggy and Scooby were trying to prove to Chad they they are great mystery solvers and they did. The solve the mystery with out the use of the smart Scooby snack. They also solved mysteries relating to the other mystery solvers. The Spencer twins aren’t really twins they just have the same name. Dr Zazlock stole the appetizers for Coco.

Chad said that he was wrong about them and awarded them the award that was nice of him. It was funny that we see that he’s actually a clown haha.

This is my favorite Get a Clue episode! It was nice to have a return to the classic Scooby-Doo plot since that series is so different. The other mystery solvers were really cool. I liked the gorilla that acted like a human haha. I thought it was awesome that they showed scenes from old Scooby-Doo DTVs. The mansion was a super creepy haunted house setting. The Knight felt like a very classic Scooby-Doo haunted house moment. I really liked the creature that came out of the paintings. He was the creepiest villain of the episode. The Halloween Guy was a great villain, however, it was pretty obvious it was just Dr. Phibes. I guessed that the agents were the monsters as well. The scene where they're throwing stuff is pretty hiarliosu. The ending where they win the award was very heartwarming. It was hilarious that Chad was just a clown haha.

Nightfright:
I liked this episode. It was cool that Vincent Van Ghoul made his first full reappearance in this episode after he was mentioned and scene on tv in previous episodes. Him, Shaggy and Scooby make a good trio together.

I also liked that this episode started out as it being just Shaggy and Scooby for the first half of the episode and the gang show up after they told the producers to call them.

I liked that this episode had a lot of horror movie elements. The thunder and lighting, his chariot being a hearse, it raining all the time at Van Ghouls house. The Mutant Bee is based off the Fly, The Repellant Dr. Phobos is based off The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Professor Jantzen Castle of Gummy Discharge is based off Professor Jarrod in House of Wax. Vincent Van Ghoul saying that the monster pretends to go away then when you open the door it’s there and rips who the shreds. Also saying that the hero’s always gets ripped to shreds by the monster.

Nightfright was a great and creepy villain. I liked that he’s a mixture of a Minotaur and Jersey Devil. I liked that he kept saying “I am Nightfright scream scream time for you to die.

Argus Fentonpoof as the culprit wasn’t that surprising. He actually thank gang for being captured because he would get his movie once he’s out of jail.

Daphne pigging out at the dinner table haha. The first and only time she eats more than Shaggy and Scooby.

I liked that the producer broke the forth wall with having an idea of a tv show about the gang and the dog traveling around in a van solving mysteries, building traps saying it would be a huge hit and calling it Spooky kids with a dog haha.

Vincent Van Ghoul showing up in the end in the mutant bee costume and holding a plate of cupcakes asking did someone say desert and him and everybody else laughed was funny.

This was a great episode. I loved how Vincent Van Ghoul showed up. I found his tinkle jokes to be a bit over the top, though. It was a nice way to split up the episode to have it just be Shaggy and Scooby with Vincent at the beginning, then the gang coming in at the end of the second. The bit with Daphne being hungry was funny. It was cool that they referenced all those old horror movies! I really liked Nightfright as a villain. He was super creepy! The producer breaking the forth wall at the end was funny.

A Haunting in Crystal Cove:
I really liked this episode for how super dark it was. I liked the idea of Mayor Jones being haunted and attacked in his very own home.

The Shadowy Figure was a really great villain. He was super creepy, eerie and scary. Him moving objects around and bringing stuff to life like the pizza, and the animal statues were spooky.

I liked Lady Marmalade as a character. She was kind of creepy. How she sneaks into the back of the bookstore. Her being a voodoo goddess and the having a spirit board was interesting.

The gang, her and the mayor gathering around the spirit board. Shaggy and Scooby’s superhero’s Steel Panther and The Amazing Fanglorious. Those sound like really cool hero’s and Shaggy is the first one while Scooby is the second one haha.

I like the trap they used to capture the ghost. Dressing up as the animal statues.

Professor Perclies as the culprit was super obvious. When they mayor took out the disc, I’m thinking that Perclies has to be behind it, the sunflower seeds were also a dead giveaway, the ghost laughs and talks just like Perclies. We learn that the mayor stole the disc from him a long time ago and that he wanted it back and tried to scare it out of him.

This episode is also based off the horror film franchise Poltergeist

This was a great episode with a very dark tone. I really liked the Shadowy Figure as the villain. Lady Marmalade was a great character. The trap to capture the ghost was really cool. Fred naming the moose trophy head Tyler was funny. Yeah, it was obvious Pericles was the culprit after they showed those sunflower scenes. I was surprised about the mayor when I first watched the episode.

Hollywood Knights:
I liked this episode. I actually know who George Takei is. I say he was a good guest star and that he blended in well with the gang. The oh my thing didn’t really bother me. That’s his catchphrase. Fred’s catchphrase is hold the phone. Daphne’ is jeepers, Velma’s is jinkies, and Shaggy’s is zoinks. I thought it was cute that the gang fell in love with his voice.

The Ghost of The Doombringer was a great and somewhat original villain. Like, it wasn’t just a regular old ghost knight. It was the ghost of a knight that can take control of other suit of armors. It was cool how he could go from knight to knight.

Darla Darrington looks just like Phyllis Diller. That’s a nice reference to NSDM. The office that the gang and George was in looks like the office from SDWAY episode Never Ape an Apeman.

The sword fight between George Takei and the Doombringer Ghost Knight was cool. It was funny that he had his shirt off and showed his chest while sword fighting. I liked the ending when he put the dust in the air and pretended to launch off into space but he actually just backed up and ran away haha.

I knew who George Takei was before this episode too. I thought it was sweet how much the gang were doting on his voice. I liked the Ghost of the Doombringer as the villain. I also thought it was a neat ability that he was able to switch what suit of armor he was in. It was neat they had a Phyllis Diller reference here. Yeah, I liked the swordfight too. The ending was hilarious!

Watching this episode, I found that it has similarities to The Sword, The Fox, and The Scooby Doo. Both episodes guest stars are from famous space franchises: Mark Hamill Star Wars as Luke Skywalker, George Takei Star Trek as Sulu. In both episodes , Scooby is playing an instrument while the door gag scene is going on. Both guest stars sword fights with the monster.

Hi Tech House of Horrors is one of those. I applaud it for being a new idea at the time but the whole technology gone evil trope was old and outdated even before the early 2000s.

WildwindVampire link

That's fair, I liked how it was an updated version of the classic haunted house trope even the "technology gone bad" storyline had been done before in plenty of other shows and movies.

Okay so there are a good few on here that I would need to watch again to get a proper idea of how to rank the setting and don't really want to at the moment or just haven't seen yet so the ones I won't be ranking are: Mystery of the Missing Mystery Solvers, Scoobynatural, Hollywood Knights, The Wedding Witch of Wainsly Hall, and The Internet on Haunted House Hill.

8. A Haunt of a Thousand Voices- The novelty of this episode makes this probably my favorite episode of this series that I don't like, but I don't find the setting particularly memorable at all

7. House of the Nightmare Witch- An interesting concept for a haunted house, but as a setting, it doesn't really have much of a chance to get higher than this

6. Where There's a Will, There's a Wraith- Very good, and a pretty great haunted house. I would say that there is a considerable gap between this and 7

5. Night Fright- One of my favorite episodes of SDMI tbh, and a pretty great haunted house. Not quite as great as the top 4 as a haunted house, but it works really well

4. A Haunting in Crystal Cove- Ok, these are getting pretty great. This one honestly could've been number one, which should tell you how

3. Escape From Mystery Manor- Okay, all of the top 3 were going to be number one at some point for me for different reasons, but this is what I am ultimately going with. Absolutely phenomenal. I would say this list as a whole is stronger than the last one, even if it definitely does not reach the heights of the first set of haunted houses

2. Night Terrors- Probably a surprise this isn't number one, as this is BY FAR my favorite of the episodes here. My favorite episode of SDMI and one of the greatest Scooby episodes ever made, and an absolutely awesome setting, but I have my reasonings

1. High Tech House of Horrors- Okay, at first this one seems to be an odd fit as a haunted house. It doesn't fit the usual Scooby Doo haunted house tropes at all. But that is ultimately what makes it win out for me. A completely unique take on the haunted house, and the fact that the house itself is not only the mystery, but the perpetrator only helps. But there is one key thing that gives this the edge. It is BY FAR the SCARIEST haunted house in the FRANCHISE. Again, at first glance it is like, really? Everything is so bright and there aren't the typical ghosts or whatever, but the house has the powers to harm or even kill the people inside. It takes the haunted house to the next level, and has to be my number one in this set

13. A Haunt of a Thousand Voices! - it's a good episode, but not as memorable as iconic as I would have wanted it to be. The reuse of the same villains over and over kinda gets old, especially when they don't explain it except for kind of a vague mention that teases the audience.

12. Hollywood Knights! - I like it and the villain is cool, but it doesn't really come to mind as a haunted house episode for me.

11. The Internet on Haunted House Hill! - I like Liza Koshy as a guest star here, especially since I'd just been introduced to her a few weeks before first seeing this episode from watching the movie Work It, which she co-stars in with Sabrina Carpenter. However, the ghost was just okay. Not bad, but there are other more memorable ones here.

10. The House of the Nightmare Witch - great episode, but same explanation as you.

9. The Wedding Witch of Wainsly Hall! - one of the stronger Guess Who episodes, I liked the dark tone here.

8. Nightfright - as an episode it's great, and I love how it's structured as the first half being dedicated to Shaggy, Scooby and Vincent, and the full gang joins in the second half. However, I wouldn't really say it comes to mind right away as a haunted house episode for me.

7. Where There's a Will, There's a Wraith - Okay, now we're getting into some really solid episodes. Great re-imagining of an all-time classic Where Are You episode.

6. Mystery of the Missing Mystery Solvers - my favorite Get a Clue episode. This was an amazing haunted house setting, and it was an awesome way to bring back the classic haunted house trope to a series that otherwise doesn't follow the classic Scooby-Doo formula.

5. Scoobynatural - I hate to put this so low, because it was an amazing haunted house that excellently reimagined the haunted house from "A Night of Fright Is No Delight." However, the remaining episodes are even more iconic IMO.

4. A Haunting in Crystal Cove - I actually thought about putting this at #1 because it's got such an amazingly dark tone, and the episode manages to create a very creepy haunted house atmosphere.

3. Escape from Mystery Manor - I absolutely love this episode. Danny Darrow is such a creepy villain despite not being a ghost or monster at all. The Saw-like nature of the house is terrifying.

2. Night Terrors - it was painful not to vote this one, because the library is one of the creepiest settings of the franchise. The villains, especially the Fiend, are all really terrifying and the hazy atmosphere this episode has is immaculate. Hot take (maybe?), but this has actually become my favorite episode of SDMI.

1. High Tech House of Horrors - I couldn't agree more with your reasoning here. Since WNSD provided a technologically updated reboot of the franchise, I think they handled this haunted house amazingly. The fact that it is so bright and cheery on the outside honestly makes it all the more terrifying when you realize how sinister it is on the inside. The villain quite literally is the unpredictable nature of technology, and like you said, it really takes it to the next level. One of the best episodes of the series IMO.

13. I completely agree, and honestly, that is how I feel now about most of the episodes I remember liking in this series

4. I noticed you changed your mind from earlier, but I don’t blame you because any of these top 4 are VERY worthy of getting the win here

2. Absolutely, 100% agreed. Best episode of the series, and that gap is only growing despite my love for several other episodes like Wrath of Krampus. I never thought a SDMI would really challenge classics for being at the top of my rankings, but this one is starting to

1. Oddly enough, I have several other What’s New episodes higher than this one in my rankings, yet I would go as far as to say that in regards to settings, this is one of the strongest settings in the *franchise*. Honestly, really evaluating the episode in terms of settings for this poll may make it move up a good bit in my series rankings, the more I think about it

WildwindVampire link
1/29/2023 08:44:39 pm

2. "Wrath of the Krampus" used to be my favorite, but it's become "Night Terrors" over time for the amazing buildup and creepy atmosphere. Like Gatherer Hade mentioned in a comment below, the fact that even the gang has no idea what's going on for almost the whole episode makes it a lot scarier.

1. Completely agreed! That's what I love about these setting polls too, it's super interesting to analyze what makes a good setting and what doesn't as opposed to just ranking a list of episodes from favorite to least favorite.

High Tech House of Horrors is getting more love than I expected. I honestly thought I would be in the far minority by choosing the one WNSD episode in a sea of great SDMI episodes that are all in the upper half of the show's episode ranking. Although I do think the votes will likely end up in an Escape from Mystery Manor or Night Terrors win.

I liked that The Internet on Haunted House Hill had a lot of Scooby Doo elements in it. A spooky mansion, a really creepy ghost, Shaggy asks for a pepper, the ghost give it to him, he says thanks and the ghost says your welcome. Shaggy then realizes that it was the ghost that gave him the pepper. Shaggy, Scooby and Liza hiding under the bed, we see their eyes and then they see the eyes of the ghost get scared and run. I also like that it was a double unmasking with the Pizza guy then the Caretaker.
