I included Where's My Mummy? it does have a bug villain in the film (the Spirit of the Sand), even though it's not the main villain. It also felt like a glaring omission not to have "The Exterminator" as an option, even though the bugs aren't really the villains, so I included that here as well.

In terms of last week's results, supporters of Scooby-Doo and Batman: The Brave and the Bold were quite brave about showing their love of the film, so brave in fact that it won with 21 votes! However, it looks like "The Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair" also had a dynamic week, coming in just behind with 20 votes! It wasn't a dark night for "What a Night, for a Dark Knight!", given that it came in third with 7 votes! "The Caped Crusader Caper" was also a crusader and came in fourth place with 7 votes. Don't think for one minute that this means "One Minute Mysteries" was a loser, since it also tied for fourth with 7 votes! However, the lack of votes for "Bat-Mite Presents: Batman's Strangest Cases" was quite strange with 2 votes. "The Scooby of a Thousand Faces" most certainly didn't get a thousand votes...in fact, it just got one.

This is quite a good array of options. Creepy Cruise gets it for me, amazing unique episode. I mean, what do you expect, it's TSDS season 2. But The Exterminator and Creepy Creature of Vulture's Claw are also really great too and deserve a shout.
When the Cicada Falls and Greece Is the Word are not some of the best episodes of their respective shows, but they're still pretty good. But not close to those classic picks. Meanwhile, The Bee Team is a really strange one, with very questionable quality, but not that bad. Stupid fun I guess.
I find it hard to take into consideration those two movies for this poll, cuz they would never come to mind when I think of bug episodes (The Exterminator does spring to mind though). However, purely as movies, I like them a good bit, even though they're not among my favorites of their respective movie eras. I'd say I prefer Where's My Mummy over Ghoul School.

Obviously my vote lies with Ghoul School, don't think there was any doubt there. "The Exterminator" would probably be my next choice. I never really cared all that much for "Greece Is the Word," although it's far better than "The Bee Team." I really was debating about including those two movies, but I figured somebody would put in the comments that I forgot them if I didn't, so I went ahead and included them for anybody who wanted to vote for them.

To expand upon the ones added to the poll later:

Me and My Shadow Demon is very good, not one of the best 13 Ghosts episodes, but right around the middle of the pack. 13 Ghosts in general is very good, not amazing, but nowhere near just decent either.
Straight Outta Nowhere is the best DTV in a pretty long time, on par with Brave and the Bold and Shaggy's Showdown actually. I'd put around Where's My Mummy and Ghoul School territory funny enough.
My vote would not have changed anyway, Creepy Cruise still the best here.

I commented on my revisions to my rankings below in Matt's post, but I agree with you that "Me and My Shadow Demon" is middle of the road. There was some good really stuff towards the beginning, but it felt like it ran out of steam by the end.

None of the episodes on this list are that good imo. I think these would be interesting to rank though.
8) When the Cicada Calls - It's a Mystery Incorporated episode.
7) Ghoul School - Like I've said before, I personally don't like this movie.
6) Greece is the Word - Whatevs.
5) Creepy Cruise - It has no real effect on me.
4) Bee Team - Bee grade.
3) The Exterminator - I like Don Adams and I like the scene where Velma talks about a horror movie where the characters are doing what the gang is doing. Otherwise, meh.
2) Creepy Creature of Vulture's Claw - Interesting from a technical standpoint because there are so many animation errors and inconsistencies.
1) Where's My Mummy? - I really like the stuff with Shaggy, Scooby, Fred, and Daphne before they find Velma. Otherwise, meh.
Sorry that I didn't have more positives to point out. These are just some of the weaker entries in the franchise imo.

That surprises me you don't like Ghoul School, given I know you tend to gravitate more towards a lot of the Scrappy content. The only reason I can think of that you might not have enjoyed it was maybe because Scrappy was more toned down?

No, I have no problems with Scrappy in this movie. Starting with Boo Brothers, Scrappy was made enjoyable again after the trainwreck of bringing Daphne back had ended.
Even as a small child I didn't like this movie. I actually have a slightly more favorable opinions of it than I used to.
I have two main problems with this movie
1) Shaggy and Scooby are extremely out of character. They were scared of the monster for what, two minutes max? They also don't have a problem with eating rotten stuff and gross things because they taste good? Shaggy wouldn't eat pickled bat wings or eat after an Ape.
2)I don't like the overall story and premise.

What I did like was the first five minutes, the scenes with Mirror Monster Shaggy, and the final 5 minutes. I think in the future, they should have Scrappy be taken by the mirror monster. Imagine Scooby not paying attention holding Scrappy with his red eyes and sharp teeth and then Scooby looks down and sees what he's holding.....

That's a really interesting perspective! I'd be interested to know what made you feel Daphne's return was a trainwreck. I would say most opinions I've seen on the 1983/1984 shows is that they were better than the shorts, so I'm curious as to why you hate it so much.

That's definitely true about Shaggy being a bit braver in Ghoul School. To be fair, in Guess Who, they ate that 200-year-old food and 50-year-old burger in two different episodes, but yeah, I totally can see that it's a bit out of character from things Shaggy said in Where Are You about his limits when it comes to food. Neither of those things ever really bothered me personally, but I can understand why they might bother someone. That Mirror Monster scene was amazing and I wish it would have been longer too. The monster saying "Scooby-Doo, I'm after you!" in such an evil voice was genuinely super creepy!

I did not like them bringing back Daphne for 4 reasons.
1) Heather North voicing Daphne - Like I said during Voice Actor week, I've never liked Heather North voicing Daphne with the exception of Legend of the Vampire. Even as a small child, I paid attention to the voices. I will admit that I couldn't tell there were two different voices for Daphne in Where Are You? but I still thought " Wow, she really gave up on her performance" starting with Nowhere to Hyde. Years later, I learned that Heather North started voicing Daphne in that episode. Heather brings absolutely nothing to the role imo. She did it for years with nothing to show for it.
2) Scrappy is way too toned down.
3)Most of the episodes from 1983 -1984 are completely unmemorable.
4) Bringing back Daphne took the show from its great path - We were getting these great 7 minute shorts where the franchise was evolving back to its core idea of Shaggy and Scooby's friendship and broadening these characters whilst expanding our understanding of them. It really should have been just Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy from 1980 through the superstars 10 movies but I must admit that Fred and Velma were great in Happy Birthday Scooby Doo and Velma was also great in Ghosts of the Ancient Astronauts. Bringing Daphne back as a regular was a step back for the franchise. It was living too much in the past instead of continuing it's brilliant evolution of 1969 -1982. I think they must have realized this mistake when they went to make the Superstars 10 movies.

Now, for the positives, I really like Ghosts of the Ancient Astronauts. It's the only episode from 1983-1985 where Scrappy isn't toned down.
I REALLY like Velma and Fred in Happy Birthday Scooby Doo. While 13 Ghosts had some terrible episodes, it also had some really good ones like Ship of Ghouls and Horror Scope Scoob. Flim Flam and Vincent are excellent distractions from the Daphne issue and limit the negative effects of a toned down Scrappy. Daphne was even given some nice wardrobe changes in lieu of a semblance of existence.
I hope this adequately answers your inquiry.

I agree with you on the 1983-1984 episodes not being memorable, with the exception of the two-parters (although "Where's Scooby-Doo?" wasn't very memorable either IMO). I never really personally had an issue with Daphne, and I kind of like that those shows brought the mystery-solving aspect back that had been absent. I can definitely see where you're coming from though, and it's fun to know different perspectives. :)

8. The Bee Team- It’s fine. Nothing special, but it’s ridiculousness is very funny

7. Where’s My Mummy- A weaker entry when it comes to What’s New era movies

6. Greece Is The Word- Seeing all of their roles in ancient Greece was hilarious

5. The Exterminator- A classic

4. When the Cicada Calls- Genuinely unsettling. I love it

3. Creepy Creature of Vulture’s Claw- An underrated gem. The first time I watched it I was genuinely shocked, and then the next time, I was like “How did I not see this coming” lmao

2. Ghoul School- Not one of my favorite movies, but enough here to get second

1. Creepy Cruise- EASY choice. One of the most genius plots/mysteries the franchise has ever seen. One of the all time best

8. The Bee Team - Becker best described it above by saying "stupid fun." It's a silly episode that isn't the best quality compared to these others, but it's enjoyable for what it is.

7. Greece Is the Word - I'll be honest, I didn't really care for this episode all that much. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid episode with two great villains, but for some reason this felt like one of the weakest episodes of Be Cool season 2 for me. I would say this one feels a bit weaker only because BCSD season 2 was so consistently strong.

6. When the Cicada Calls - Very fun episode with an amazingly creepy villain. Loved it.

5. Where's My Mummy - Solid WNSD and one of my favorites actually. Great plot twist at the end that I did not see coming.

4. The Creepy Creature of Vulture's Claw - love how dark this episode is, and the villain is excellent. Very intriguing twist at the end.

3. Creepy Cruise - I really wanted to put this one higher, because I love it, but 1) I enjoy the other two more and 2) the quality drops off a cliff for a moment during that costume ball scene. That didn't fit at all and just felt dumb to me.

2. The Exterminator - great episode and I would say it would easily get my vote as favorite bug episode had Ghoul School not been here. I really like Don Adams as a guest star, and the gang exterminating a haunted house is such a fun, interesting premise. An underrated gem.

1. Ghoul School - favorite Scooby movie of the franchise. There was honestly no chance of anything else winning for me with this one being here.

The highlight of Greece Is The Word for me is really just the beginning as I found their introductions hilarious

I also really love The Exterminator more and more it seems, even if 5 doesn’t seem like an excellent ranking. Honestly, it probably could’ve been up to number 3 depending on the day

That scene doesn’t particularly bother me even though if I had to choose, I would choose that as the weakest scene in the episode. But it doesn’t particularly affect the rest of the episode for me, and even the atmosphere goes back to usual pretty quickly I’d say

WildwindVampire link
7/31/2022 11:05:34 pm

I honestly don't even remember their introductions. I think that's one of the few BCSD episodes I've only seen once. I should watch it again one of these days.

Glad to meet a fellow appreciator of "The Exterminator"! I don't see many people rate it as a top episode, but honestly it's one of my favorites of that series.

The scene doesn't bother me very much and there was probably no need to mention it, since it didn't affect where I ranked it. It's just a bit of a step down from the general quality of that season. Since it's so amazingly dark, it's a bit jarring to have it jump from that dark tone to super silly just for that one scene. Granted, it probably didn't help that the airing of this I watched as a kid was a VHS recording from the USA Network, and they cut that scene out in syndication to make time for extra commercials. I remember it being a bit surprising to see that scene once I finally saw the uncut version years later haha.

I just thought seeing Shaggy as "Shagtates", Fred as the village idiot, or Scooby running that cycle thing were all just really funny to me. Could just be me having a strange sense of humor

I wouldn't say The Exterminator is one of my favorites of the series (far from it to be honest) but I love most of the series, and that one has grown on me since I ranked it near the bottom last time. I'd probably put it in the teens for that series. And for that series, that still is pretty great

Shadow Demon for me would be in between "Bee Team" and "Greece is the Word." Love the premise and villain, but it turns into kind of a trainwreck at the end when we learn the Shadow Demon is just some guy's shadow. And then of course there's also that abysmal "Goodnight Ghoulies" song.

WildwindVampire link
7/31/2022 11:01:05 pm

I got distracted and forgot to answer the second part lol. Straight Outta Nowhere would be in between CIcada and Where's My Mummy. Honestly probably my favorite crossover, and they mixed the two shows really well. The cicada queen was creepy.

Becker
8/1/2022 01:24:06 am

Goodnight Ghoulies is the worst part of the episode by far. I don't like when they break into song most of the time in this show, it's one of the worst aspects of 13 Ghosts.
I wasn't necessarily bothered by the Shadow Demon not being one of the 13 ghosts personally though. I think the twist of having an episode where a monster that seemingly appears to be one of the 13 ghosts turns out to not be one is a neat idea.
However, on the other hand, it's a bit frustrating at the same time, because they canonically only capture 12 of the 13 ghosts in the actual show (which pisses me off to no end lol). Having the Shadow Demon be one of the 13 ghosts would've been one of the easiest ways to correct that. A double-ghost-capture episode (Morbidia and Shadow) would've been neat too.

WildwindVampire link
8/1/2022 09:48:00 am

Yeah, the songs in 13 Ghosts weren't good at all. I don't think I liked any of them. I didn't mind that the Shadow Demon wasn't one of the 13 ghosts; it just seemed like kind of a waste of a good villain to have Byron say "oh, that's just my shadow" and then the demon never appears again. The Shadow Demon was one of the creepiest ghosts that appeared in this show IMO so it felt like kind of a silly backstory for him to have. It didn't bother me overly much, but I would have liked a creepier/better backstory. I wouldn't have minded if they just explained how his shadow came to life, since Bryon just saying "that's my shadow" felt sort of like the writers were just rushing to figure out how to wrap up that plotline.

Yeah, them only capturing 12 ghosts is also frustrating. The Shadow Demon being one of the 13 ghosts would have been the perfect way to fix that, and I wish they had done that. What most confuses me is that there's only one ghost missing. It wouldn't really make sense for there to have been a whole second season for one ghost, so I have no idea what they were thinking with only having 12 ghosts in the first season.

Becker
8/1/2022 11:14:03 am

Platypus Duck's little song was the only good one lol.

I wish Tom Ruegger or someone working on this show would come forward with what the masterplan actually was. What we know is they wanted a second season to finish everything and didn't get it, but wtf would you be able to do with one ghost a whole season? Doesn't make any sense, the show's about catching 13 ghosts, you've already caught 12, buddy.
If they wanted to conclude the story with a film from that late 80s HB Superstar 10 era, but weren't given it and instead the execs wanted 3 random unconnected at all Scooby movies, that would make MUCH more sense imo. I'd take a concluding movie chapter right after the show rather than a second season. Finishing the 13 Ghosts story (and the original canon HB run of Scooby) with an epic 80 minute film, preferably also featuring the return of Fred and Velma kinda NSDMy style, would be really awesome.
Maybe that's why they finally decided to right that wrong and do one over 30 years later, but we all know how it turned out... hot garbage that only makes me more mad than I ever thought possible. If Ruegger and the original crew did that type of conclusion in the 80s it could've been amazing. Shame.
That's something ripe for fanfiction, a movie-length project in continuity with the canon show, set shortly after the final episode (with no stupid illogical continuity...), bringing everyone in, you can do so much with that idea! You could even take the 2019 film and do the exact opposite lmao, thst would turn out nicely. I'm shocked I don't see fanfics like that, almost everyone does full rewrites of the 13 Ghosts show which are completely different, but all I'm interested in frankly is just a normal movie conclusion (with no weird time jumps before it or all the other shit from 2019) tying up all the loose ends of not just the show but the franchise at that point in general. I'm not even much of a fanfic reader, but if there's one concept I'd love to see done (with justice), it's this one.

Matt
8/1/2022 02:49:39 pm

Confession time: I haven't seen 13 Ghosts in ages, so while I felt comfortable enough to rank it, it might be an inaccurate ranking

Becker
8/1/2022 05:40:26 pm

@Matt, 13 Ghosts is pretty good, middle of the pack as far as Scooby shows, so I think it deserves a rewatch. Just don't go in expecting something nearly as dark as it appears on the surface. It's more comedic than anything. I mean, it's from Tom Ruegger, not Wes Craven haha. I wouldn't bother with the 2019 "finale" 13th Ghost film though, it's a complete dumpster fire, the biggest pile of dogshit in a lot of ways in the entire franchise imho.

WildwindVampire link
8/1/2022 05:48:33 pm

The Platypus Duck song was my favorite of the series. Like I mentioned below, I enjoyed "To All the Ghouls I Loved Before" and "Give 'Em the Old Flim Flam" as well.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like Tom has been very straightfoward about the plan for the 13th ghost. When I talked to him for a fun fact many years ago, he didn't seem to interested in answering the question for whatever reason. I like your idea of having one of the three Superstars 10 films be a conclusion to 13 Ghosts, although if that were the case, I would have wanted there to be a fourth because the Superstars 10 movies were some of the best films of the franchise IMO. I wouldn't want a 13 Ghosts conclusion in place of any of them. It would have made a great film, so it's a shame they squandered it with Curse of the 13th Ghost. Based on Return to Zombie Island, which didn't really need a sequel in the first place, I imagine their motivation was more based on money than wanting to conclude the show. If that weren't the case, they would have at least made sure it stayed somewhat true to the original series instead of the nostalgic cash grab we got.

I have also been a little surprised that there's no fanfiction (that I know of) that concludes the story. Maybe that's a fanfic I'll have to consider writing someday.

Becker
8/2/2022 02:08:59 am

Yeah, you'd expect that at least after Curse of the 13th Ghost came out there would be a slew of reimaginings of a movie conclusion to The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo by fans, but apparently nope.
Idk, to me it seems like an obvious good idea, there's SO much potential for a great fanfic movie-type sequel to 13 Ghosts. Even just taking the template of the 2019 film and fixing all the issues (which thrre are hundreds) would be a very interesting read, though it'd be preferable to not use that movie as a springboard as much as possible.
Also, one of the very few good things about the 2019 film is that Asmodeus, from his design to his backstory, is genuinely quite a satisfying final ghost for the crew to go up against. He can easily be used in fanfics as the 13th ghost instead of having to create your own one.
But yeah, even sitting here in the moment I can think of many good and interesting ideas and things to do with such a fanfic (don't know if I should expand upon them cuz I'm already worried I'm rambling lol), and I'm not even a fanfic writer in the slightest.

WildwindVampire link
8/2/2022 08:29:57 am

I liked Asmodeus's design too! He was a great 13th ghost and easily as scary as the other ghosts (scarier in the case of Demondo and Rankor personality wise).

The Exterminator:
This episode was good. I liked Don Knotts as a guest star. He was really funny. I liked that he was getting into his role as an exterminator. The gang being his exterminating assistants was a nice idea.

It was cool seeing the Wolfman, Frankenstine’s Monster, Mr. Hyde, and Swampy Pete in this episode with different designs.

The scene between the gang arguing was interesting. I wonder if this was the first time in the franchise we see them arguing about something.

The unmasking scene was funny. Don Knotts trying to pull of Lorne Chumleys face thinking it’s a mask. It was also cool that one of the masks was William Hanna.

It was nice of the gang and Don Adams offered to help the Lorne Chumley and Otto finish his new movie.

The Creepy Creature of Vultures Claw:
I liked this episode. The setting of Vultures Claw was creepy. I liked the Mantis as a villain. He was so creepy and had a cool design.

The bit of Scooby putting oil in the door so it wouldn’t creek was funny. It didn’t even work when Shaggy opened it.

It was also funny when they were fooling the Mantis with the drawers and then ended up in the closet. They even asked each other how’d they did that and said they’ll figure out later.

I liked that all the suspects were watching over the gang and how each member of the gang were guessing who they think the Mantis is and that they all showed up saying it wasn’t them.

The twist that it was Professor Greer the whole time was kind of surprising giving that he’s a friend of Velma’s.

Me and My Shadow Demon:
I liked this episode. The Shadow Demon was the star of this episode. He was so cool as well as his powers. The Shadow Demon Song was pretty cute and enjoyable.

Griswald, the giant spider laughs just like Muttley the dog. The old lady turning out to be Queen Morbidia was a surprise.

I liked the twist that the Shadow Demon wasn’t the actual villain but was the shadow of Byron Befuddle and that he wanted the gangs help from the beginning.

The goodnight song was enjoyable and funny when everybody was waiting for Scooby to finish.

I love this episode too and agree the Shadow Demon was the star. I wish he could have been one of the 13 ghosts! The twist with Queen Morbidia was really interesting. I found it funny that Griswald was just a recycled sound effect of Muttley laughing.

When The Cicada Calls:
I liked this episode. The Cicada Creature was the best part of this episode. He calls employees of Destroido tells them to quit their jobs or something terrible will happen. They refuse, hang up, and then he attacks them. His voice was creepy. It was pretty cool that he’s made up of cicadas.

Sherif Stone being afraid of cicadas was funny. Man Mr. Dederdee was freaking out in the hospital room after being covered in cicadas.

Grandma Moonbeam being the culprit was kind of surprising giving how sweet she was and how she controlled the cicadas was interesting.

Velma was so cold to Scooby in this episode. It was nice to see that Fred and Daphne went on a real date with each other.

The Cicada Creature was a terrifying villain! I really enjoyed this episode, and the culprit was surprising. Yeah, I didn't like how cold Velma was to Scooby in this episode. She was being really unnecessarily mean IMO.

Greece Is The Word:
I enjoyed this episode. I liked that the gang were already in the middle of a mystery in Greece being chased by a harpie and end up being trapped in a palace.

The palace has a wall coming down on them and they have to find a way out. Velma then finds a scroll that tells about a wedding taken place in Athena and a spider women called Arachne comes to stop it.

I liked the Greek version of the gang: Fredricos, Daphne servant, Princess Velmonia, Shagrates, and Scoobymus. They even have their own version of the Mystery Machine, the Michanima Mysterious.

Shagrates teaching people about food is the only thing we need haha. Fredricos kidnapping his uncle in a Medusa costume when he was on his way to a costume party haha. Scooby being the Oracle haha.

I liked Arachne as a villain. She was creepy and somewhat scary at times. Like when she shows all her eyes and her screams. She shoots webs out of her hands just like Spiderman which is kind of cool.

Prince Shlemielius was kind of funny. Talking about his skin problems. Even when he was caught he blamed the itching, distracting skin bombs and the lotion.

Velma then figures the way to stop the ceiling from coming down with the by using the tile/apparatus to knock out the harpy and prevent the ceiling from coming down. The ending was funny when the unmasked the harpie revealing an unknown man. They don’t know who he is then carry on leaving him ther with ceiling coming down.

Unpopular opinion: I liked this episode, but it was one of the weaker episodes in a very strong season. Tbh, I haven't seen this episode since it came out, so I don't remember a lot about it. I believe my reason for not liking it quite as much as other episodes was because the humor felt a little forced to me, but I can't fully remember. I will say I loved the two villains. The harpie and Arachne were both so creepy. I liked the prince as well, if I remember right. He was pretty funny. I like how this episode is essentially a mystery within a mystery. It's a very unique concept that had never been done before.
