Weekly Poll #138

For those that didn't know, "I'd Do Anything," "You Don't Mean Anything" and "The Worst Day Ever" were not just random songs made up for Scooby; they were were the first three tracks off of Simple Plan's first album, (please excuse the horribly cringey album title they chose) No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls. "I'd Do Anything" was the second single off of the album, and it was charting on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was used as a chase song in "It's Mean, It's Green, It's the Mystery Machine." The song was certified gold in the US, and it ultimately peaked at #51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #15 on pop radio. It was the only chase song to date that was currently charting when the episode aired, and had just been released as a single less than a month before the episode came out. I find it interesting that WB was guest stars and chase songs as a form of album promotion back then. Lindsay Pagano also revealed in the fun fact she wrote for the blog that her inclusion in the episode was part of a marketing strategy, since WB was trying to promote her debut album.

(As a side note, I hadn't ever heard "The Worst Day Ever" in full before making this poll, but I thought it was really good!)

*to be read in Snagglepuss voice* Heavens to mergatroid! It looks like "What a Night for a Knight" wins this poll, with a whopping 29 votes! "Fright House of a Lighthouse" wasn't far behind in second place with 21 votes. "Nowhere to Hyde" comes in last with 20 votes, but lost by a close margin. It lost by one vote, even! That about does it for last week's results. Exit, stage left! *insert cartoonish running sound effects here*

I like all the songs but I place my vote for WNSD theme song. That was so good.

As I said, the popular comment choice NEVER wins lol

I’m not sure how much I’ve talked about this in here, but I am a big music fan, especially when it comes to rock music. I have a soft spot for Simple Plan because of Scooby Doo, even though they are probably known by many as the biggest whiners of the pop punk scene. It helps that the episode they are featured on is a masterpiece. Always thought it was a genius move to be on a show with the AT40 host Casey Kasem. Talk about a smart way to get people’s attention

All of that aside, time for my ranking

4. Worst Day Ever- Easy last choice. Doesn’t have the nostalgia the other 3 have. It isn’t the worst song on the hilariously-bad titled album (seriously, I would say this album title is better than their next album title simply because this one is so bad it’s funny), but still last here

3. You Don’t Mean Anything- Top 3 are all really close. This one ESPECIALLY has nostalgia going for it, more so than I’d Do Anything tbh. But I also would say that if it wasn’t in an episode, I probably wouldn’t like it as much as I do

2. I’d Do Anything- On the other hand, I genuinely believe that this is just a really great song no matter its inclusion in Scooby Doo. Honestly, probably Simple Plan’s best song imo, at least on an album because…

1. What’s New Scooby Doo theme song- I mean… it is the What’s New Scooby Doo theme song. I hold it as one of the very best theme songs *ever*. I almost gave I’d Do Anything the nod given that it is just more material and substance, but this is just like a perfect theme song

Overall, I’d definitely say Scooby Doo helps my view of Simple Plan be a lot more positive, even if I would say that they are still pretty overhated by some in the music critic scene anyway lol

“Sassy Fred” haha.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it here either, but I’m a pretty big music fan as well! I listen to pretty much any genre, although I’m not a fan of country. Do you have any favorite artists? I have a soft spot for Simple Plan too because of Scooby, but there are definitely some other pop punk/rock artists I enjoy, Avril Lavigne, Siouxsie and the The Cure, Banshees, Green Day and Paramore being among my favorites (although I will admit some of Avril’s songs like “Hello Kitty” was just atrociously awful lol). I hadn’t thought of featuring Simple Plan on a show with the AT40 host being a promotional strategy, but that was honestly genius on their part and adds a whole new layer of brilliance to the promotional strategy of having them on Scooby. Anyway, looks like we have the exact same list!

4. The Worst Day Ever - I haven’t heard the whole album so I don’t have many other songs to compare this to, but I certainly didn’t hate this one. It's worth pointing out that maybe their other songs wouldn't have been appropriate or something for Scooby, since I know in "Addicted," there's that one lyric "I'm addic (long pause) ted to you" lol. The tone switch at the end was neat, but this one doesn’t have a lot going for it. Kinda feeds into the “biggest whiners of pop punk” stereotype that you mentioned.

3. You Don’t Mean Anything - I feel like my nostalgia is kinda clouding my view of this one, because it was the chase song scene was iconic and it was an amazing episode. But like you mentioned, if there wasn’t that nostalgia around it, I don’t think I’d like it as much.

2. I’d Do Anything - the best Simple Plan song that I know of that isn’t the theme song. All around great song with some very vivid lyrics that express the romantic pining very well. As you said, I also don’t feel like my love of this song is intertwined in nostalgia, because it’s such a solid track.

1. What’s New Scooby-Doo? theme song - incredible theme song that remains one of the best themes of any Scooby show. They did an amazing job with this and I think it’s so cool they released the studio version of this nearly 20 years later.

I don’t think I’d like Simple Plan as much as I do if not for the nostalgia of Scooby, but most of these were solid songs.

We have a few bands that overlap there haha. I would say some of my Mount Rushmore of bands are My Chemical Romance (who are my very favorite), Fleetwood Mac, Green Day, and The Beatles as a clear cut top 4

After that, it gets a little cloudier in terms of ordering. I like Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Weezer (well they have some bad stuff but their first two albums are classics), Pink Floyd, Coldplay, Nirvana and Foo Fighters among others. I haven't heard enough from Siouxsie and the Banshees to speak effectively to them, but I do like quite a bit of Avril's stuff as well, even if there are certain songs like Girlfriend or Hello Kitty that get on my nerves personally. But stuff like "My Happy Ending" or "I'm With You" I go back to quite a bit.

As for The Cure, I actually have just now recently really started digging through their discography beyond just the "Friday I'm In Love"s and the "Just Like Heaven"s, and I have adored it. Still have some work to do, but I genuinely believe they could end up being 5th on my bands list, behind my Mount Rushmore there lol

Rock is my preferred genre, but really, I can like stuff from about any genre. Even country can have some really, really good stuff

As for your list, I completely agree with how iconic You Don't Mean Anything was as a chase song, but yeah as a song itself, I couldn't put it on the same level as I'd Do Anything

OH and Queen should get a mention on that list in the second paragraph as well

The Beatles are amazing! I like a few songs from MCR as well, especially "Welcome to the Black Parade" and "Teenagers." Fall Out Boy, Queen, Coldplay and Weezer have got some great music. Yeah, Avril has some stuff that can be a bit cringey. I enjoy "Girlfriend" personally; I'd say "Goddess" falls more into the cringeworthy territory for me (particularly the lyric "He thinks I'm sexy in my pajamas, the more I am a hot mess the more he goes bananas" lol, which I guess is cute but it's also a bit cringey). I never really got into "I'm with You" personally, but "My Happy Ending" is a classic. I really like her latest album, 'Love Sux' as well.

That's an interesting coincidence. "Friday I'm In Love" is my favorite by them personally, but they've got a lot of other good songs as well.
With country, there's the occasional song I enjoy - Kacey Musgraves, Kelsea Ballerini and Keith Urban have some decent stuff, but I personally can't do that "bro country" stuff that feels like it's taken over the genre. Country isn't a genre I really enjoy anyway, and the fact that a lot of the mainstream stuff has gone in the "bro country" direction of talking about trucks, beer, etc. is just not something I can get into. It lacks substance and it's too repetitive for my tastes.

Sassy Fred

My country taste actually falls more into a traditional type of country. While I’ll say that pop country does have some quality (Kacey Musgraves does stand out), I usually stick with stuff like Johnny Cash or even some modern country that goes in a bit more of a traditional and heavier in route. There’s this new song called Something in the Orange that is popular right now that is a great example

WildwindVampire link
7/17/2022 09:51:45 pm

Interesting, I definitely enjoy some of the older country stuff to an extent like Johnny Cash and Jerry Reed, although I would say pop-country is what I tend to most gravitate towards if I'm going to enjoy a country song.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, but yeah, Welcome to the Black Parade is my all time favorite song. I’d highly recommend that entire album if you haven’t heard it yet as that is my all time favorite album LOL

I haven't heard the entire album yet, so I'll definitely have to check it out!

Also, I just realized I totally thought I was talking to a different person...I had misremembered Becker being the one to make the comment about about the popular option never winning, but I figured out who this is now lol.

@Wildwind, you oughta be ashamed of yourself!

Haha I figured that out when I made the comment, I was thrown off by the "As I said, the popular comment choice NEVER wins" comment because I misremembered that Becker was the one who had said that last week haha.

I wouldn't say never, cuz we've got this poll right here which ain't getting any winner but the theme song lol.

Most of the music I like is from the 60s to the 80s.
My favorite bands are Queen, Tears for Fears, and The Beatles. From a solo artists standpoint, I have two favorites. One is Johnny Cash and the other is a Scooby Doo theme singer.
Larry Marks, who was the original singer for WAY is my favorite singer of all time.
He sung and wrote songs in the 60s and 70s. None were ever hits but in my opinion, there isn't a single song in this world that can beat his song Looking Through the Eyes of Love. it falls into the Northern Soul genre. You wouldn't be able to tell from the WAY theme but Larry Marks can sing in a very high pitch.

Tears for Fears are great! I particularly love "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." I haven't ever heard Larry Marks's other music and wasn't aware he made music outside of the Scooby theme song. I'll have to check it out!

I agree with you, but it will be interesting to see if "the most popular option in the comments never wins" trend continues and something else wins haha.

This will be a case where the comments are actually right about the winner though. Quite obvious what Scooby-Doo fans will pick between a Scooby-Doo theme song and some other not-Scooby-Doo songs.
I like Simple Plan a good bit, including those songs in the pool, but I'll go with the crew and say the theme song gets my vote. It's not the best song here per se, but it's my favorite cuz of nostalgia and iconicness (probably not a real word).

I agree it will definitely win, although without ruining anything both "I'd Do Anything" and "You Don't Mean Anything" have more than 5 votes currently. "The Worst Day Ever" on the other hand, if you'll excuse the pun, is having the worst day ever with 0 votes lol.

Becker

They deserve those votes for sure.

It's weird how "I'd Do Anything" and "You Don't Mean Anything" are polar opposites. It reminds of Harem Scarem with songs like "With a Little Love," which combine both elements. They're singing about something bad but in a good way.

Simple Plan and The Invisible Madman:
I really like this episode. It felt like a New Scooby Doo Movie episode. It was so cool that Simple Plan get to guest star in this episode given that they sang the WNSD theme song. They were great guest stars and blended in well with the gang.

The Invisible Madman was a great, original and unique villain. I liked that Zeke Zillion, Jack Hunter and Eve De La Faye were all in on it. Their reason fo doing it was ridiculous. They wanted to replace Simple Plan at their concert. They are not even good. It was funny that they were playing and everybody didn’t like it at all.

It was nice seeing Gibby Norton again. He was goffy as always. I wondered how did Scooby make himself invisible at the concert hmm?

I agree this felt a little bit like a New Scooby-Doo Movies episode, although it still retained that updated WNSD atmosphere/field. I agree Simple Plan were amazing guest stars, and the Invisible Madman was an incredible villain. The twist at the end that it was everybody the gang had met was really surprising. Yeah, I enjoyed seeing Gibby again too haha.
