Weekly Poll #122 (Redo)

Picture
So this Sunday's poll didn't turn out to be particularly exciting, as everyone seemed to vote for one particular option with the exception of a few people. One of the comments in that particular thread sums it up quite well haha.
Picture
Given this, I thought it might be more fun and allow for a bit more variety in answers to simply redo the poll with all the Scooby and Scrappy shows. The results for this poll will still be posted on Sunday. For those who are curious about the final results of the other one, here they are:
Which season of The Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Hour collectively had the best villains?
Neither - 28
Season 2  - 7
Season 1 - 9

It is a close race here between the first season, TNSDMy, and 13 Ghosts. I’m almost inclined to vote 13 Ghosts (Almost!) but I think I will go with the first season

To clarify, I mean the 1979 version when I say first season

I didn't really consider 13 Ghosts too much, because there were a few lackluster/strange/bland designs and ideas for monsters, like Zimbulu, Demondo, Phantazmo. And the fact 2 of the ghosts (Nekara and Captain Ferguson) were mostly presented in human form doesn't seem like a great decision (imo) for a show about some of the most dangerous, horrifying and gruesome monsters in the world.

But I ended up voting the same as you, as I elaborated in my comment.

That is probably why I went away from it, but there are a few that I thing are really cool in 13 Ghosts though. Zomba is one of my favorites

I had to think about it a bit, but I agree with what everyone's saying about how unique the 1979 show's villains were! The Snake Demon, Dragon Beast, Blue Scarab, Shadow Creature, Neon Phantom, Star Creature, the Alien...all of them had such cool designs.

I thought about 13 Ghosts a bit, but with that series, for as many good villains as there were, there were just as many not great ones. I didn't mind Phantasmo because he became grotesque at the end, but I agree with all the other ones you listed, Becker. They should have had better designs if they were truly 13 of the most terrifying ghosts in the entire world. I liked Maldor, the Mirror Demon, Zomba, the Cyclone Demon (even though that multiple ghosts together and not just one), and Nicara had really cool designs. Rankor and Marcella were semi-decent. The Shadow Demon was amazing as well and should have had his own episode. The fact they made him just a guy's shadow is the biggest waste of an amazing villain they've ever had. I say "amazing" villain because Rankor going in the chest willingly still bothers me lol. It's just such a dumb ending.

Yea, I tried to give it serious thought, but also without examples of monsters for both seasons I kinda just went "nope" and voted neither, sorry if that made me part of the problem

No need to apologize! I wasn't bothered by people answering "neither," I just thought it might make for more interesting results rather than everyone feeling like they had no good option to vote for.

Nice, something to actually choose from here! Sorry Scrappy shorts.

I originally thought I would go with NSDMy, but then I remembered some of the very silly villains in the 11 minute episodes, like the giant mouse, the bees, the evil elf lol, and all the spy stuff. But otherwise it's got some very good monsters, even though I would say they lean a little bit too much on "ghosts of _" for my preference. That's not to say I don't like the majority of the ghosts, I do like them, especially all the ones in the 22 minute episodes + the Hamlet one. They're executed and chosen great, It's just that I would like a bit more diversity. However, the Universal Monsters (and their parodies like Franklin Stein, Norma Deathman etc) are awesome in this season! Red Skull and Cyclops deserve a mention too. And Monster Mutt is ironically enjoyable lol.

But ultimately after going back through the catalog of villains, I'd give the slight edge to Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo (1979-1980). There are some really cool, unique, out-there monsters in this show, like Star Creature, Neon Phantom, Blue Scarab, Dragon Beast. I really appreciate that type of creativity, and these kinds of ideas can make for some of my favorite villains in the franchise, like Captain Cutler, Space Kook, Tar Monster, 10000 Volt Ghost. There's also some very good classic Scooby feeling monsters, like Night Ghoul, Shadow Creature, Lady Vampire, Strange Encounters Alien. There are some bland, meh ones however, like Jeremiah Pratt, Sky Skeleton, Minotaur (the latter being kind of a Jaguaro case, cuz the design is good but the portrayal is off-putting). I'm not huge on Sea Beast, Snake Demon, Great Haldane, but I still think they are good villains, it's just that they don't leave that much of an impression on me. And I've already mentioned before that I love the Devil Bear lmao, I don't know why, I just have a soft spot for him. I even voted for the bear as my favorite villain of this series on another poll and I stick by it lol. And how could we forget about Carl and Tony... as much as we probably want to – not a shining moment of the show, to say the least.

I had the same feelings about The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries. They kinda fell in the "ghost of ___" trope a bit too much. The Universal Monsters, Norma Deathman and Hamlet's ghost are among my favorites of not only this season, but of the Scrappy episodes in general. I have a soft spot for Franklin Stein too haha. Red Skull is neat. Cyclops is...okay. I liked his design, but I didn't really feel his presence in the episode was great. It could have been better.

I have a soft spot the Devil Bear as well, though it's probably because it was the only Scrappy episode from the first series I had on an official VHS tape as a kid haha (on the Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo Volume 1 VHS). The Sea Beast is pretty cool looking, particularly the tail is cool. I enjoy the Lady Vampire, Great Haldane and Jeremiah Pratt as well. The Minotaur and Sky Skeleton aren't great. I do like the animation error where the Sky Skeleton's pupils aren't colored in, which makes him look soulless and it's super creepy. Yeah, I'm definitely not a fan of Carl and Tony lol.

I am still going with Richie Rich Scooby Doo show season 1 here. I do really like some Puppy Hour villains but not many are substantial. The 1979 season had some really cool villains as did New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show in 1983. As for 13 Ghosts, I really liked Maldor the Malevolent and the zombies in Horror Scope Scoob as well as Zimbulu.
As for NSDMY, they are not my thing with the exceptions of Snowball and the cartoon ghoul, and the parrot and zombies from Ghosts of the Ancient Astronauts.

The zombies in "Horror Scope Scoob" were funny. Snowball was adorable.

I'll give my rankings of Puppy Hour here:

Good - Octopus, Medusa, Sea Monster, Gargoyle, Slime Boy, Zarko

Adorable - Bigfoot

Bad - Crooks, Cattle Rustlers, Balton Brothers, Motorcycle Gang, Crooks (again...too many unnamed crooks in this series), Miss Bulgravia, Crooks (x3), Evil Director, Moose, Slippery Dan, Bugsy Burton, Bruiser, Big Bad Bucko, RB, Michelos, Horse Thieves, Genie-Poo, Jasmine, Dr. Bleek, Hugo, Bart and Henchman, Aliens, Phantom, Catfish Burglar and Henchman, Wonga, Oog, Phantom Jewel Thief, Pistons McGee, Great Mysto and Accomplice, Abominable Snowman (design is good, the noises he makes are annoying which is what puts him here), Vendetta, Lance, Bulldog

God awful - Muscles Malone, Brutus, Buster, Bull, Pirate Grandma and Henchmen, McGurk Brothers

Cat - Cat Lady, Cat, Panther, Lion

So bad it's kinda funny - Coach, Fingers Malone (this guy is so stupid...he's literally trying not to be suspicious about his crimes on a plane while reading a magazine named "Crime")

Misogynist who could use a good kick in the arse - Horrible Homer

We don't talk about - Bruno

The 5 villains from Puppy Hour that I really like are Jasmine the Genie, Slime Boy, RB, RB's girlfriend, and the Abominable Snowman.

I'm glad you enjoyed those! I didn't really particularly enjoy any of them other than Slime Boy. Jasmine, RB and RB's girlfriend were a bit bland to me. The Abominable Snowman had a nice design, but his roar is awful (in my opinion).

Concerning RB and his girlfriend, I am not sure why I enjoy them but I just do. Misfortune Teller is one of my favorite Scooby Doo Episodes from the 80's.

Fair enough, nostalgia definitely drives us liking things that we're not sure why we like. I feel that way about "Scooby's Trip to Ahz."

Jacob Staggs

I personally never use nostalgia for rating media. I am a critic and enjoy the art of the critique. I see nostalgia as an obstacle in the way of total expression. There are movies that I loved as a kid that I would not give a 2/10 to now.
I have nostalgia in the sense that I remember watching and liking something as a kid and I appreciate those memories but then I can pop it in, evaluate it, and find it to now be either great, abysmal, or in between.
I prefer it that way because it allows me to be fully in tune to what I like and dislike, not letting the past interfere too heavily with the present choice as I evolve as a viewer.
I have nothing against others using nostalgia to base their ratings on but I do not do it myself, for it does not seem to make my assessments accurate to how I feel.
The only time I ever let nostalgia factor into a rating was with Scooby Doo Meets the Boo Brothers. That is because it was one of the first movies that I ever saw. When I got older, I was still giving it a 10/10.. I realized that this 10/10 was partially out of nostalgia and not entirely truthful, so I stopped it. That was the first and last time that I let nostalgia factor into a rating.
Just something I felt compelled to bring up.

Thank you for pointing that out and I'm sorry I misunderstood what you were saying. That's a really interesting perspective on nostalgia! I actually have an article I just wrote about this a few days ago for the blog that I'll post at some point.

Oh boy, this is tough but I'll try. I guess it's odd none of the 1979 villains are in here given I picked that as my vote, but I would argue that the series had the most consistently good villains compared to the others, while the best villains came from individual other seasons.

I would have to agree with others it's a tricky one between the 1979 series, the NSM and 13 ghosts but feel the 1979 series wins. I'm away and can't really do proper research on my phone but when you consider that the best episodes of NSM contained Velma and or Fred and the fact that some of the 13 ghosts were a little lacklustre, it makes sense although 13 ghosts was a very close second.

Adorable and deserving of all the pets - Snowball

I will defend Codefinger a little bit. Similar to the Chameleon, he wasn’t supposed to be a monster or anything, but just a guy who is really good at disguises. I have to give him props for somehow tricking the General into thinking that he was a Major in his disguise. I’d say he is more okay than good, but for what he is, I don’t think he is that bad

On the other hand, I absolutely COMPLETELY agree with the amusing tier, especially the Mad Sea Lion which is absolutely one of the funniest non-A Pup Named Scooby Doo monsters ever

WildwindVampire link
3/31/2022 09:34:29 pm

I definitely don't hate Codefinger, I just thought his design was a little silly. The disguises were cool though! I guess perhaps a "really bad" ranking was a bit harsh. I'm glad you agree on my amusing tier haha. The Sea Lion is indeed one of the funniest villains of the franchise lol.

I don't think we will be seeing a new DTV of scooby, for a while given that a new DTV Looney Tunes was only recently announced. Besides it usually takes three months for new DTV from warner to become available on DVD and streaming following such a announcement. Besides the Super-Pets movie comes out at the end of july, so if they were to annouce a new Scooby movie now that means it would most likey come out at the beginning of july. Which wouldn't be a good idea to do seeing as releasing two movies starring krypto in them so close to each other would be a rather bad idea. Also I doubt we will be a seeing a new Scooby series for a while, seeing as WB is currently busy make new episodes for Jellystone! it was announced a while ago that show was renewed for an additional 40 episodes to make so we be definitely be seeing a third and fourth season and if we are a lucky maybe even as fifth one I hope we see a DVD release of it one day.. As for the velma series I think it will get released in autumn.

I could be wrong but I really don't think the Krypto film will get released towards july it would simply be bad publicity to release two movies with the same character to close to each other. And we do know that it takes them a peroid of three months to release these DTV since they have been know to do this the past and are still doing it that way some examples.

Tom & Jerry: Cowboy Up, press release and trailer was on Oct 30, 2021 got a DVD and Digital released on January 25, 2022. hence took three months to get released.

King Tweety, press release and trailer was on Mar 21, 2022. Comes to DVD and Digital on June 14 2022.

You may be right, but on the other hand I'd find it odd if WB just happened to come up with two movies with Krypto around the same time, especially since Krypto hasn't appeared in any media (besides comics) since the mid-2000s. It sort of feels like they were trying to synchronize it so the Scooby film would support the movie, but I may be wrong.
