I picked The People of Fred Jones. The idea of that episode was nice and the funny.

I had a really hard time not picking that one because it ties together the season so well, but ultimately I went with "The Loch Ness Mess" because it's my favorite episode in the franchise.

So many good episodes to choose from!
Here is my top 5
5) The Ransom of Scooby Chief - A very nice change of pace . There are only two negatives. The villains are ultra generic and Shaggy and Scooby are somehow embarrassingly cowardly here.
4) Operation Dog and Hippy Boy - It's fun.
3)Horror Scope Scoob - Very funny with a good Mystery to boot.
2) Spirits of 76 - Daphne telling the generals to get dressed is funny and it is nice to hear historical facts.
1) That's Snow Ghost - Great!

I'm surprised to see Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue so high in your list! It was a very good Get a Clue episode though, and was among my favorites of the series. I personally didn't love "The Ransom of Scooby Chief" much either, for the two reasons you listed, mainly the first one. The villains being so generic made the episode very boring for me.

You know what, I’m gonna do a ranking

Haven’t seen/don’t remember all that much: Surprised Spies, Bride and Gloom, Operation Dog and Hippy Boy, Space Station Scooby

12. Ransom of Scooby Chief: I really do NOT like this episode. Perhaps my least favorite of the franchise. If I were gonna watch a Scrappy short, I’d rather it actually be a short rather than a full episode

11. Horror Scope Scoob: Decent episode, but lackluster finale Too many loose ends

10. Quebec and Baghdad: Typical Laff a Lympics fun

9. Lights Camera Monster: Typical APNSD fun but not one of my favorites of the series

8. The People vs Fred Jones: Hot take. It was a fun concept. And predictability doesn’t always bother me, but it did this time unfortunately. Good episode though

7. That’s Snow Ghost: Even hotter take. But to be fair, I absolutely love all of my top 7, so I love this more than my ranking would say

6. Spirits of 76: I just really like this one

5. The Unnatural: a very good What’s New episode. One of the best sports episodes

4. All Fear the Freak: One of the very best SDMI episodes. Just an epic season finale

3. A Nutcracker Scoob: Yep, two Scrappy episodes in my top 3 and this one is an obvious classic

2. Wedding Bell Boo’s: Perhaps my favorite ever Scrappy episode, but that isn’t enough to beat

1. The Lochness Mess: Without a shadow of doubt. This is one of the most exceptional episodes ever made. Near perfect. Glad to see how much love it gets. Easy choice

16. Bride and Gloom - the whole episode based on horrible stereotypes of an overly misogynistic guy who demands that the town give him a woman immediately. Just plain awful.

15. Ransom of Scooby Chief - One of the worst Scooby episodes of all time for me. Really bad/generic villains and the plot wasn't well written. It felt like the writing leaned mainly on Shaggy and Scooby getting scared of everything, and there wasn't much mystery here. This definitely feels like a backdoor pilot to the Scrappy shorts.

14. Space Station Scooby - admittedly I didn't love this one. Neil deGrasse Tyson didn't seem all that interested in his role, and while I normally love goofy puns, these felt out of place. Bill Nye wasn't as bad, but I liked him a lot better in Happy Halloween. I liked the tardigrade monster though.

13. Quebec and Baghdad - typical Laff a Lympics episode. Fun but nothing super special.

12. Surprised Spies - I liked the comedy aspect of this one. It felt a little above the other Scrappy shorts in that season. The plot of Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy being enlisted as secret agents was fun.

11. Horror Scope Scoob - from series finale standpoint, not great. Didn't really wrap up anything, and even then, I found most of the other 13 Ghosts episodes better than this one. Just okay.

10. Lights...Camera...Monster - fun episode. I enjoyed the villain, but as you said, nothing super special.

9. Operation Dog and Hippy Boy - great finale. I liked how it felt like a culmination of the first season with Phibes finally getting the secret formula.

8. That's Snow Ghost - Love the villain and setting. It feels wrong ranking it so low, I guess I just liked the other ones here better.

7. The Spirits of '76 - great episode. The villains were amazing and I liked the historical aspect of the episode, especially given it was the 200th anniversary of the US becoming a nation.

6. The Unnatural - tough to rank this one so low. The villain was super creepy and I agree it's one of the best sports episodes. A classic.

5. A Nutcracker Scoob - really hard ranking this one so low because it's one of my favorite Scrappy episodes of all time. I love the villain and the Christmasy feel of the episode. Never fails to get me into the holiday spirit.

4. Wedding Bell Boos - another one of my favorite Scrappy episodes. It was fun meeting Shaggy's and Scooby's family, and especially that the villain was a member of Shaggy's family!

3. All Fear the Freak - epic season finale and one of the best SDMI has to offer. The Freak is such a creepy villain, though as I've mentioned before, I wish they would have had him talk in creepy riddles like he did in the previous episode. It made him less creepy to just have him grunt and say a few words.

2. The People vs. Fred Jones - Very unique concept. The villain was decent (not my favorite), but I loved that the whole mystery was told via flashbacks in a courtroom. Great way to end the first season.

1. The Loch Ness Mess - My favorite episode of the franchise. Perfect in every single way.

I can’t decide if that description of Bride and Gloom makes me want to avoid it at all costs or makes me want to watch it to rip it apart lol. Glad to see I wasn’t alone in really loving That’s Snow Ghost but not as much as some others here

Agreed that the Loch Ness Mess is near flawless. Only one thing really bothered me when the ghosts closed themselves in a cabin while everyone ran out and said “You will never escape” or something. That mistake stuck out, but I mean if that is the biggest problem I have with something, it is basically nitpicking. Everything else was done almost masterfully

My recommendation is to hate-watch it. Hate watching makes everything better haha!

Oh my gosh, that mistake bugged me so much as a kid...and still does to this day. It just doesn't make any sense lol.

It is Loch Ness mess vs All fear the freak. Loch Ness Mess is an ultimate classic with great plot and guest stars but All fear the freak had a great plot twist and had the greatest cliffhanger in the scooby history.

It's tough but i'll go with the classic

PS most of the others are also very good episodes

That’s Snow Ghost:
This was the first winter themed episode and it was nice. The snow ghost was a pretty cool and scary villain. Like, he gave me nightmares as a kid. Mr. Greenway just laughing was pretty creepy. I like the story of Fu Lan Chi and the Yeti.

Some pretty intense stuff in this episode. Velma almost getting cut by the sawblade, the Snow Ghost trying to blow Velma and Scooby up with dynamite, throwing the barrel at the gang and Scooby of the cliff.

I really like this episode and the Snow Ghost. I also enjoyed the backstory they gave the Yeti with Fu Lan Chi. You're right that this episode had a lot of intense moments! This episode arguably had the gang in a more dangerous situation than they were in any of the previous 16 episodes.

The Loch Ness Mess:
This was a great episode. It was nice seeing the Harlem Globetrotters again and they were great guest stars just like in their first appearance. I really like the inclusion of Shaggy’s Uncle Nathaniel. The Ghost of Paul Revere, The Minuteman Ghost, and The Red Coat Ghost were great and spooky villains. The sea serpent was also cool. I always thought it was weird when the ghost shut the door and said there’s no escape after the girls and the Globetrotters actually did escape.

My favorite episode of the franchise. Partly because of the nostalgia, but also because I just love everything about the episode. The setting, plot, guest stars, and villains are all amazing. I've mentioned it in an earlier comment, but the scene where the ghosts say there's no escape after they lock themselves in the cabin always bothered me as a kid (and even still bothers me now), because it just makes no sense lol.

The Spirits of 76:
This episode was nice. The Ghosts of Benedict Arnold, William Demont and Major Andre were amazing villains. I really like how this episode focused a lot on history. It’s pretty interesting that the title has 76 in it and this was the last episode to air in 1976.

I didn't love this episode. It felt like a backdoor pilot for the Scrappy shorts, but it felt like it dragged on. I didn't really care for the villains. I've always wondered how much them deciding to do this episode was influenced by Marla Frumkin suddenly quitting her role as Velma. Velma doesn't speak at all in this episode, so maybe it required them to think creatively about how they could essentially cut her out of the episode without it being obvious.

Wedding Bell Boos:
This episode was amazing. Shaggy’s family and Scooby’s family coming together for Shaggy’s sister’ wedding was nice. The Ghost of Mcbaggy Rogers was a cool villain. It’s unique that the monster was an ancestor of one of the gang members (Shaggy) and that he had dog named Yankee Doodle Doo who looks just like Scooby.

Lights Camera Monster:
This was fun episode. Stinkweed was a pretty cool villain. I like how his voice changes. The idea of Fred filming a monster movie was a nice idea given that this Fred believes in monsters. It was also nice that he came up with the idea of filming the gang solving a mystery. It was nice seeing Yogi Bear and Boo Boo again.

The Unnatural:
This was a great baseball episode. The Baseball Specter was so cool. Him throwing flaming baseballs was a nice touch. He was also really creepy. The creepiest thing he did was when he just came behind the gang and asked “what about me” and then he scared them.

The ending was nice when Luis Santiago broke the record and the announcer said it was the help of those meddling kids and they all celebrated and Scooby face was show the big screen and he said his catchphrase.

All Fear The Freak:
This is the greatest and saddest season 1 finale. The gang find out what happen to the original mystery incorporated. The Freak of Crystal Cove was a cool, creepy and scary villain. Wished they kept his use of rhymes from his previous appearance.

The gang getting locked up just like in the first episode. Fred and Daphne reveal that they are engaged which shocks everybody. Professor Pericles killing Ed Machine was pretty intense.

It wasn’t really a surprise seeing Mayor Jones as the culprit. When he saw the locket Daphne found, he had a worried face and we can all tell that he has something to do with it and in other episodes their were hints. In this episode we learned his whole backstory of why he came to Crystal Cove, scaring the original mystery incorporated teaming up and betraying Pericles and threatening Brad And Judy and then taking their son (Fred) and lying to him his whole life.

The ending gets you a little emotional. Sherif Stone crying after the person he looked up to most is actually the culprit. Fred calling off the engagement and saying “ mystery incorporated is dead”, making Daphne cry. Shaggy going to military school. Scooby going on a farm. Daphne blaming Velma for everything if she just told her the truth about Angel.

Scooby seeing the Pericles survived and has the two disk pieces and going for the others and Scooby vowing to stop him and saying that he will get the gang back together if his name isn’t Scooby Dooby Doo.

This is one of my favorite season finales ever too. The Freak is one of the creepiest villains of the franchise, arguably. It really bothers me that they didn't keep up the continuity of the Freak saying riddles. I also liked his big knife, which I felt made him creepier. The caves were also very creepy.

I liked how they tied it back to the first episode with the gang getting locked up as well. The engagement was a huge surprise, and Ed Machine getting murdered was indeed very intense.

I was starting to think it might be Mayor Jones when he started acting suspicious for a few episodes before. However, him stealing Fred from his real parents and lying to him his whole life is the most intense and evil villain master plan of the franchise, arguably. The ending definitely made me emotional.

The People vs. Fred Jones:
This was a great and funny episode. Fred on trial for being accused of being the culprit behind a recent mystery is pretty unique. The whole mystery being told in flash backs in the courtroom was nice. I like that Shaggy was not helping Fred’s case and Dayton Knight leaving then coming back in the room.

The setting of safety springs was really creepy and the story behind how the town became abandoned was pretty interesting and intense. The Toxic Mutant was a creepy villain and had a cool design.

Daphne becoming a lawyer after winning a video game about lawyers. Velma cutting her hair off because of the bet about becoming a lawyer she maid with Daphne. Daphne forced to cut her hair too after the judge discovered she wasn’t really a lawyer. So funny.

It was pretty interesting that culprits they caught in previous episodes were the jury. I think of it as a good way to wrap up this season.

Space Station Scooby:
I thought this was a good episode but wished it was more exciting. I thought Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson were ok guest stars. I like how they told science facts throughout the episode. It was funny that they know Steve Urkel. The Tardigrade Monster was an original monster. I loved how the trap is based off The New Scooby Doo Movies theme song.

I remember being excited for this episode because of Bill Nye. I remember watching him in elementary and middle school. As for Neil deGrasse Tyson, I didn’t know who he was but he is also a scientist so I thought it would be interesting to see two of them in the episode. I was really hoping we would hearThe Bill Nye theme song in this episode or at least have the gang and Neil chant his name in the episode.

I wasn't the biggest fan of this episode. Neil deGrasse Tyson wasn't a great guest star; he was just kinda bland to me. Bill was somewhat better than him, but I still liked him better in Happy Halloween. I liked how original the monster was. I also thought it was really unique that The New Scooby-Doo Movies background from the intro was used for the trap.

I watched Bill Nye all the time in school as well haha. I knew about Neil deGrasse Tyson prior to this episode, but I wasn't looking forward to him as much as Bill Nye. My expectations weren't quite met for this episode, but it wasn't horrible. It would have been amusing if they did the Bill Nye theme song in the episode lol.

Hmm, there aren't quite that many amazing season 1 finales as one might think. A lot of them are close to that, but not quite. Weird.
That's Snow Ghost, Spirits of '76, Lights...Camera...Monster, The Unnatural, All Fear the Freak, The People vs Fred Jones are all very good episodes, but not some of the best of their respective series.
Operation Dog and Hippy Boy is a pretty good Get a Clue episode, but Get a Clue's nature doesn't make it one of the best episodes in here.
Not to mention there are some actual disappointments with other season 1 finales, like The Ransom of Scooby Chief, Horror Scope Scooby, Space Station Scooby, even though they still are enjoyable enough for the most part.
<insert shoulder shrug to Scrappy shorts here>
Now hear me, I wouldn't have expected this to be that much of a "hot take", but The Loch Ness Mess isn't quite in my top 3 or top 5 New Movies episodes (it's still quite up there though) nor my list of absolute favorite Scooby episodes of all time. I don't know, to me it doesn't reach that incredible level, while still being great. I love it and it's the best Globetrotters episode, but I'm not quite sure why it's the most frequent answer for best New Movies episode.
To be honest, Wedding Bell Boos and Nutcracker Scoob are probably the only ones that make at least the top 2 of their series from this whole array. And I prefer the latter to the former, so, in the most anticlimactic way, my vote goes to Nutcracker Scoob. That's a shocking outcome even for me, as I didn't think this would be my choice at first. But in the end, this one's my favorite of this bunch.

I partially agree with your first statement, though I feel "All Fear the Freak" and "The People vs. Fred Jones" are the some of the best of their series. I do agree with all of your disappointment episodes though (as well as the shoulder shrug ones haha).

I will admit that for me, part of my love of "The Loch Ness Mess" is nostalgia. Everyone likes different things, so it's understandable you might not enjoy it as much as some others.

I really like "Wedding Bell Boos" and "The Nutcracker Scoob" and find them as the top choice (WBB) and #2 choice (TNS) of their respective series. "The Nutcracker Scoob" also gets extra points for me for being my favorite holiday episode, though I like "Wedding Bell Boos" a bit better since we get to meet all of Scooby and Shaggy's relatives.
