Top 10 Scooby-Doo Villains

There have been so many amazing Scooby-Doo villains over the years that it was genuinely difficult to pick favorites when I came up with the idea for this article. Nonetheless, I narrowed it down to ten of my all-time favorites. We'll be starting off with an honorable mention that is probably an extremely unpopular opinion that will surprise everybody.

Honorable Mention: Banshee
Likely either you're shocked right now, or you're saying "what episode was this from?" The banshee is a very forgotten villain from The Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Hour episode "Scooby's Luck of the Irish," and it only appears for a brief minute of the episode. This banshee's design is so terrifying that it's a huge shame that it was wasted on a one-minute appearance, in my opinion. The jagged teeth, huge mouth, skeletal hands, and soulless eyes make this one of the best Scooby-Doo villains of the franchise. I wish this would have been used in a full-length episode, because I imagine the tone of the episode would have been super dark.

10. The Mummy of Friar Sera
Perhaps this is another surprise, since I don't think the Mummy from "Theater of Doom" (Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated) is a particularly popular villain. In the past, mummies had just been the same bandaged-looking prototype (with the exception of "Mummy Scares Best," but I thought the eerie green mist, his glowing yellow eyes, and his decomposing corpse was amazingly creepy. The raspy voice is also super creepy!

9. The Ghost of Uncle Beauregard
I have a huge soft spot for Boo Brothers and all the villains from in it in general, but Uncle Beauregard particularly stands out. His design is absolutely incredible, and I love the uncertainty around whether he is a real or a fake ghost throughout the movie. Even though the audience is kind of left unsure about the Skull Ghost at the end of the film too, Uncle Beauregard is the only villain in the film that we're left completely unsure about. The sheriff never admits to dressing up as Shaggy's uncle, but the ghost seems to have conflicting purposes throughout the film - sometimes he just wants to warn Shaggy away, and other times, it seems like he wants to kill Shaggy. The mystery surrounding if this ghost is real or not, as well as the amazing design, makes this a top-tier villain for me.

8. Zomba
I think it's well established for those who know me that Zomba is my favorite 13th ghost, but she's also one of my favorite villains of the franchise. One of the features of villains that freaks me out the most is bugged-out eyes, so Zomba's huge looking eyes are super creepy looking to me. The raspiness of her voice is also incredibly sinister-sounding! In the one scene where she's mis-animated (pictured above), she looks absolutely terrifying!

7. The Ghost of Mother
It's safe to say that this villain is one scary mother lol. (That joke was perhaps more frightening than any of the villains that made this list haha) "Doo Not Disturb" is one of my favorite episodes from Be Cool, and a lot of that is how amazing this villain is. The concept of the villain just being somebody's mother is hilarious, but at the same time, it's executed in such a creepy way.

6. The Freak of Crystal Cove
This guy's design alone is what gets him ranked so high. He looks like something out of an R-rated horror movie, and the fact he only speaks in creepy riddles in "Pawn of Shadows" is so creepy. Not to mention the giant knife he holds! What brings him down just a little bit for me is that in "All Fear the Freak," there's a weird inconsistency where he starts speaking in broken English and no longer holds the knife. This makes him less creepy, but only a little bit. He's still one of the most incredible and terrifying villains of the franchise IMO.

5. The Ghost of Sarah Ravencroft
Although the fake ghost was very good too, I'm talking about the real ghost of Sarah Ravencroft here. She's arguably one of the most evil villains in the entirety of the franchise, as her plan is quite literally to destroy the entire world just for the fun of it lol. The twist at the end of Witch's Ghost where she's actually real is one of my favorite moments in the franchise.

4. Revolutionary Ghosts
It should come as no surprise to anyone that these guys from "The Loch Ness Mess" are here lol. I don't feel these are particularly terrifying like most of my other choices, but they just feel like such classic Scooby-Doo villains to me. The scene involving the ghost with the lantern disappearing into the night feels so inherently Scooby-ish to me. I wish we would have gotten to see the Redcoat Ghost more than just those two times, as he's my favorite of the three. He looks super creepy with his soulless and vacant eyes.

3. The Ghost of Dr. Coffin
"The Harum Scarum Sanitarium" is in general one of the spookiest Scooby episodes of all time, but a big part of that is the ghost of Dr. Coffin. His design is so creepy and he genuinely looks like he is insane. The creepy glow around his body really amplifies the spook-factor for me.

2. Gramps the Vamp
This vampire from "Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats" is my favorite vampire villain in the franchise, but a lot of that is his behavior rather than his design. Him calling Lisa in the middle of the night from the pitch black room is one of the scariest scenes of the franchise in my opinion. However, he's not only here because of his menacing looks; he's also here for having one of the most despicable motives of any culprit in the franchise. (Spoilers ahead) The fact that Uncle Leon betrayed his niece like that is beyond cold and scarring, especially considering he literally traumatized an 18-year-old girl just so he could steal her money.

1. Morgan Moonscar
You could call me basic for making this my pick, but Morgan Moonscar is easily the creepiest villain of the franchise. Even though he's not seen more than a couple times in Zombie Island, his introduction of literally being a bag of bones crawling out of his own grave is absolutely terrifying. His design is so creepy looking, particularly his dried-out face and the huge scar around his eye.

Very surprising list, the fact that no SDWAY monsters were here is baffling to me as I think I'd have at least 3 in my top 10 list, they're just that good.

It was super tough for me to choose and there were a lot of villains I wanted to put on here, but none of the SDWAY ones made it. Maybe it's because they have been reused so many times with all the Easter Eggs recently.

think it should be divide up either as top 10 monster from shows than from movies, or before revival (all monsters from series before zombie island) and after (zombie island to present)

Series:
9. Space Kook
This one was super close to making it. This is a stone cold classic, I love the creepy giggle and the flickering skull in the space suit is so cool.

10. Headless Spectre
One of my favorite villains from Where Are You. I love his laugh and I think his design is really cool!

Movies:
4. Revolta
She kinda reminds me of Zomba a bit design wise, particularly with her bug eyes. One of the best witches of the franchise.

5. Gryphon
This is here purely from uniqueness; while it isn't particularly menacing, I love the level of detail put into the design.

6. Banshee
Close behind is the banshee from Abracadabra Doo. I think it's really frightening how she can turn from a beautiful woman into a hideous monster.

7. Woodsman
I get genuine slasher movie vibes from this one; easily one of the creepiest villains of the entire franchise.

8. Ben Ravencroft
The twist at the end of Witch's Ghost is incredible. Tim Curry does an incredible job voicing Ben. It's really creepy seeing Ben suddenly change from a happy-go-lucky guy into such a nefarious villain.

9. Ghost of Cleopatra
The design for Cleopatra looks so creepy, and the twist with who the culprit is at the end is epic.

10. Yowie Yahoo and Wildwind Vampires
The Yowie Yahoo is such a unique vampire in the franchise, where he feels larger-than-life and beastly in a way that no other vampire in this franchise does. These villains have a really interesting chemistry together. I really like the Wildwind Vampires (hence my username haha) and it's neat how their costumes make them look like half rockstars, half vampires.

Oh boy here we go… I’ve actually never made a list like this before. I am going to do movies now because it is easier for me and come up with an episode list after because I am not sure yet

10. Dracula- Reluctant Werewolf: Ok, I wanted one of the Scrappy era villains in here and chose to go with the goofier and far less threatening Dracula here

9. Phantom Virus- Cyber Chase: Classic nostalgia one here for me

8. Yowie Yahoo- Legend of the Vampire: The only What’s New era that makes it and it deserves it

7. Specter of Shadow Canyon- Camp Scare: Barely beats out the Fishman for this list but the specter is genuinely terrifying

6. Aliens- Alien Invaders: I am an Alien Invaders fanboy so of course the really interesting looking aliens made the list

5. Woodsman- Camp Scare: My favorite movie villain outside of those 2 certain movies

4. Sarah Ravencroff- Witch’s Ghost: Need I say more?

3. Ben Ravencroft- Honestly though, I feel like Ben stole the show in this movie. The way he used his charm, an excellent Tim Curry performance

2. Lena and Simone/Werecats: They were the true villains of Scooby’s masterpiece, yet design-wise fall slightly to

Great list! I really like the Spectre of Shadow Canyon as well and considered putting her on my list. It's funny, I thought about putting Dracula as #10 on my movies list, but I ended up not. I think he's a really interesting villain personality-wise. He's more of a narcissist and a pest than an actual menacing villain out there doing evil, which is an interesting contrast to most Scooby-Doo villains.

I will do my top 10
My honourable mention is the same as yours. The Banshee from Luck of the Irish. Amazing design.
10) Sadie Mayhem - Great villain.
9) Minotaur - Scooby of a Thousand Faces- This is a great episode and this villain elevates it to the next level. This is my favorite episode and villain post 2008.
8) Agent 2 - SASDGAC - Funny villain and always with a fun gimmick like Daphne in Be Cool but executed even better.
7) Dr Phineas Phibes - Great and funny villain.
6) Sylvester the Vampire - Funny and he can be a talking bat.
5) Headless Spectre - Haunted House Hangup - He does not have a head and the twist of him not being the real villain is superb.
4) 10,000 Volt Ghost - 1 star for every thousand volts.
3) Phantom Shadows aka Green Ghouls in Chains - A Night of Fright is No Delight - The only villains that scared me as a kid.
2) Ghost of Red Beard - Go Away Ghost Ship- One of the most well rounded villains in the franchise.
1) Space Kook - Spooky Space Kook- Epic!

It's really cool to see the Banshee on your list as well! I love Agent 2 as well, he definitely delivers a lot of funny lines throughout the show. That "I have a whistle!" bit when Phibes asks who the whistleblower is in the last episode always gets me. I like Sylvester too! He's definitely an underrated villain.

Top 5 Honorable Mentions

Ghost of Fireball McPhan I think he has a pretty cool design

Green Candy Globs/Scooby Snax Monster essentiality the same monster, but I love them both and I’ll count them together

Lady Vampire of the Bay- I think she has a cool mystery surrounding her and I like the design

Asmodeus, really love his design, voice, the way he turns into a steamroller, it’s a really great monster

The Fruitmeir’s Beast, I like the design and colors of this one and his ability to make cocoons

10- The Crystal Crawler, I really like the design and premise for this episode. He looks super cool, and I love his movements.

9- The Haunted Mystery Machine, from It’s Mean It’s Green It’s The Mystery Machine. I love the green lights mixed with the little mouth that’s formed after ramming into the alley lol.

8. Captain Moody’s Ghost, I love the episode and his inclusion in Scooby Horror Arcade. They both have a really good design.

7. The Shark Men, the ones from The Secret of Shark Island, I really love the design and premise of the episode which is why it’s on here.

6. Ghost Clown, think he is pretty cool with his coin of gold. The design is one of my favorites from Scooby-Doo Where Are You

5. The Creepy Heap From The Deep, probably the most unique villain out there. Sure there is vampires, werewolves, zombies, but I mean this is a fish with crab arms wearing a seaweed wig, haha it’s such a great villain.

4. 10,000 Volt Ghost, from Watt A Shocking Ghost not from SD2, I just really like the design. The fact he could heat up Shaggy’s burgers was pretty cool. Wish we saw more of his melting abilities though.

3. Space Kook, a classic. The laugh, the design, the color of blue, it really stood out to me and I love it for that

2. Gramps The Vamp, what more can I say? A really intimidating villain with a pretty cool design. Loved the episode Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats so it plays a factor

1. Phantom Shadow, my favorite. One that always stuck with me as a monster. The green, the laughs, the mouth…this was the Ghostface before Ghostface. As much as I like ScoobyNatural, nothing can beat this classic version of the phantoms.

I really like your list! Completely agree with your thoughts on The Creepy Heap from the Deep, it's definitely one of the most unique villains of that series. The Shark Men, Fireball McFain, the Lady Vampire, Slime Mutant and Captain Moody's Ghost are also all amazing villains that are definitely underrated!

I love this top ten list, it’s a great mix of some fan favorites as well as personal flourishes! Like Zomba is such a cool pick, and so is the Mummy of Friar Sera! Pericles is easily top 5 for me. He doesn't even compare to 1-minute Banshee. Friar Sera and The Freak were chilling and fascinating, don't get me wrong, but Pericles has everything a great villain needs, all in the span of 2 seasons. Despite not being a person in a costume, he's the best villain of SDMI.

Of the people in costumes, some that instantly come to mind are Headless Horseman (TSDS), Space Kook, Headless Specter, Tar Monster and Invisible Madman (and many others). Morgan Moonscar easily wins best supernatural monster, that scene in the pit with Scooby and Shaggy is one of the most bone-chilling moments of the whole franchise.

"1-Minute Banshee" lmao. I agree Pericles is one of the best villains of SDMI and a top-tier villain of the franchise, but I gravitated a bit more towards people in costumes for my top 10. Pericles is easily in my top 20 in terms of series, though. Absolutely agreed that the scene with Morgan Moonscar in the pit is one of the most frightening scenes in the entire franchise.

This one is an interesting discussion point. Personally, I would say objectively, Pericles has to be one of the best villains in the franchise. After all, he is one of the most intricate and developed villains the franchise has ever seen

With that in mind, through a subjective lens, he will not make my list among my top ten. Perhaps he should, but he really doesn’t fit the mold of what I think when I think “Best Scooby Doo villains”. I think about classic villains, cool looking villains, or scary monsters or ghosts or whatever, at least in the episode conversation. If Pericles were in a movie, he would likely make my list because I look at that one a bit differently than episode villains for some reason, like Ben Ravencroft did make my movie list lol, but for some reason, and this is part of why I split up the lists, I look at different things between the episodes and movies for top villain lists

Also, I am kind of in between the opinions of 1 Minute Banshee here. Because I agree, I love the design and I wish it got a much better episode and was the main villain or something. With that in mind, it did not so it wouldn’t even be close to this list for me lmao

If the list was about "Top 10 Monsters", then Pericles wouldn't make mine, because he doesn't fit the monster concept (well, except for Come Undone I guess, lol). But since this post was specifically phrased as "Top 10 Villains", then he does fit the bill perfectly. Pericles is a straight-up villain in more ways than normal people in costumes personally.

@Matt, when I think of movie villains, I default to the supernatural ones, while my mind usually goes to fake monsters for shows/episodes.

I feel exactly the same way about how I chose my favorite villains for the series. Pericles is an awesome villain, but I also tend to lean more towards the classics or unique/scary monsters for my top 10. Pericles is awesome and is easily one of the evilest villains in franchise history, but design-wise, there are better villains than him IMO. My mind tends to default to the actual monsters, which Pericles was not. And yeah, I also look at different things for movie villains. Design tends to be the first element I look at when determining my favorite villains, so that gave the 1-Minute Banshee an edge in my mind haha.

Honorable mentions:
Chickenstein: The best of one of my very favorite categories of villains: the so ridiculous that it is charming villains

Gramps the Vamp: A classic monster from a classic episode

Dr Coffin: Certainly terrifying, gets points from that

Creeper: The most famous barely misses my list

Puppetmaster: Shows that simplicity can be just as scary if not scarier than anything

10. Headless Horseman- I don’t know about anyone else, but I always found this guy creepy, plus the story behind the villain makes for an interesting take on the original tale of Spooky Hollow

9. Redbeard: Just classic stuff right here. Not even one of my top tier WAY episodes, but it isn’t for any fault of Redbeard

8. Ebenezer Crabbe: Truly a spooky specter. His design is so oddly colored that it makes him a little unsettling and extra spooky to me

7. Elias Kingston: Two of my favorite episodes back to back here, and Elias Kingston has pretty much the same explanation as Ebenezer. I’m sure many would wonder “Why is this guy blue?” but it genuinely makes him spooky to me for some reason

6. Captain Cutler: I mean, just another undeniable classic right here

5. 10000 Volt Ghost: Whatta shocking ghost lol (yes I did use the very odd alternate title lol) this guy is iconic and the best villain of the Scooby Doo Show imo

4. Headless Specter: I’ll join the praises of this one, can you tell I like the classics yet? Lol

3. Invisible Madman: I’ve always found the Invisible Madman to be such a cool villain, and while obviously the science didn’t make sense of how they were invisible, that doesn’t bother me because it really is not that bad for an impossible explanation for such a cool villain. One of the many reasons why this episode falls in my top 3 of all time, in a top 10 filled with the 3 classic series

2. Ghost Clown: It was very close between my top two, and my opinion could change, but the Ghost Clown is absolutely terrifying and is one of the most dangerous villains the gang will ever face. On top of just being an iconic classic

1. Space Kook: For such a basic choice, I am a little surprised it wound up this way for me. But here’s the thing; as good as I think the rest of this episode is, this is the one episode where the villain can take a great episode and make it legendary for me. There are many other episodes where this plays a role, but none other where the villain can do it itself for me

Haunted House Hang-Up is fun, but it has one of the worst monsters in all of scooby doo at the end. But the setting and episode itself is really good. It might be higher honestly, haven't watched it in a while. What the Hex is going on kind of bored me to be honest. I don't know how your numbers 23,21,18 and 15 are so low! Especially 15, very iconic.

I love seeing other people's lists. Mainly because I find it too hard to do - if I wrote one today it would likely be completely different net week.

I must say, though that the look and sound of the Space Kook is very hard to go past. It (and Charlie) were probably the monsters that first really made an impression back when I was a kid. The others were OK, but those two were so amazing.

Interesting you picked Mother from Be Cool. I love that series, but because of the clever humour even more than the plots and monsters. But Mother is pretty harrowing.
I liked Crazy Karl from Guess Who as well, for similar reasons.

Yeah, I feel that. My lists can change a lot over time too. Mother has always been a standout to me. Despite it being a very silly series, they balance the goofiness of the show's formula with a dark, ominous tone so well in the episode, and Mother is a big part of that. She's such a terrifying villain, especially with the creepy clock ticking right before she shows up. While he wouldn't be close to my top 10, Crazy Karl from Guess Who is a great villain! It is super creepy how he shows up in the hotel room in the middle of the night.

Seems like noone else likes the reuse of WAY monsters, however to me that just shows how iconic they are, I love their returns.

1. Charlie the Robot (because of his role in Mystery Incorporated, might be the only monster to be redeemed and used by the gang, right?)

2. Mayor Jones (because he still saved his son as the Freak, I consider him redeemed, also great to have a monster who also haunted an older Mystery Incorporated too)

3. Professor Pericles (an actual archenemy! And he also had a disguise, the so-called Shadowy Figure!)

4. Coco Diablo (an actual archenemy? Love the idea of her creating the costumes for the past villains)

5. Captain Cutler (because of his returns in Be Cool, I like how Fred considers him an archenemy, even if it was in the worst episode)

6. Harry the Hypnotizer (He is iconic and has a scary ability)

7. & 8. Lena Dupree & Simone Lenoir (they are the only ones who actually got me scared as a kid)

9. Mr. Carswell (Creeper costume is iconic, all of his returns are welcome in my eyes)

10. Dr. Najib (just plain hilarious, him constantly repeating the phrase: “Coin!” and everything that happens in his episode just entertains me to no end.

Great list! I wouldn't have expected to see Mayor Jones or Coco Diablo on anybody's list, but they are great picks. Mayor Jones is certainly one of the most despicable villains the franchise, since he quite literally kidnapped a baby and tricked Fred for 18 years.

I guess technically you included Mayor Jones too, at least in his Freak identity.

I like him specifically for a lot of reasons, but in general I like overarching villains or the ones who are more personal with the gang.

I also loved that he helped the gang hide the Planispheric Disk from the Original Mystery Incorporated in season 2. That was a great redeeming moment for him and kinda felt like him learning from his villainy, as his whole motive for dressing up as The Freak was to steal the disk.

To be honest there have been so many Great Villains over the years, I'm unsure I'd be able to do a top ten list, so instead here's my top villain from each series list.

WAY- The Wax Phantom - This guy just creeped me the hell out and the fact that he was willing to literally kill Shaggy and scooby haunts me to this day.
NSDM- The Spirit of Fireball McFain - This series reeked of mediocrity villain wise but Fireball McFain was at least somewhat decent I guess.
Scooby Doo Show - Steam Demons - Another that left a lasting impression on me as a kid.
Scrappy 1 - It's a dead tie between the brilliantly designed Snake Demon and the Lady Vampire of the bay.
Scrappy 2 - N/A - take the extra one from above as a replacement.
Scrappy 3 - Tough one but Ghost of Christmas Never just wins it for me.
13 Ghosts - Surprise here but I'm going for the Himalayan Werewolves in Episode 1, some of the best animated werewolves I've seen.
Pup - Chickenstein for the absolute stupidity.
WNSD - Again another tie between the Invisible Madman and the Giant Robotic Clown.
GAC - N/A
MI - Dead Justice.
BCSD - Professor Huh.
Guess Who - Fox Monster
Movies 80s/90s - Ghost of Sarah Ravencroft
Movies 2000s - The Woodsman
Movies 2011 + - Dapper Jack.

Great list. Numbers 10, 6, 5, 3, 2, 1 gave me so many nightmares as a kid and early teen. Now i appreciate it when i see monsters spookier than averege

I also like the aliens from alien invaders, the virus from cyber chase, space kook and charlie from SDWAY, the bear from wrestlemania mystery, and so many more
