IGN has just announced that Velma for being developed for a second season on HBO Max. No further details or date has been given at this time. Velma is the most streamed HBO Max Original Animated Series on the app; however, it is worth noting that there are only four other HBO Max Original Animated Series currently released, so this is not as big of an accomplishment as some news outlets have made it seem.

Unfortunate that they continue with this show

Agreed. Hopefully they turn the writing around, but I'd be lying if I said I had a lot of faith that they will haha.

They should have never even tried developing the idea.

The good news in this announcement is that it demonstrates that, despite the cancellation of Holiday Haunt, DiscoveryWB still has faith in the franchise.

That's a good way to look at it. I'm still not completely convinced this won't get cancelled before the official renewal announcement (since they said "in development" rather than "renewed") but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

It wouldn't be in development if it wasn't renewed though

Very disappointing news for me today. I’ll keep watching but I won’t be happy when I keep watching because these writers don’t know how to produce a good show!

I'll keep watching too but I'm sure I will probably be let down. Sadly I doubt they'll make substantial enough changes to the show for it to be enjoyable.

if a second series of this actually makes it to air I'll be surprised, from what I understand it was greenlit before season 1 was aired... but with how destroy happy WB is I can't imagine this lasting...

I'll be interested to see if this gets Holiday Haunt-ed, and I could definitely see that happening. They've only said it's in development, but there has not been an official renewal announcement.

Because I don’t see people caring about the controversy as much in a second season, this will fail epically, and probably get truly awful viewer counts

I cannot imagine this getting renewed for a third season. I'm guessing less people will be watching this than season 1.

Excited to see all the new storylines and get a ton more epic jokes. Also, just don’t watch it, anybody who doesn’t like it.. but saying “oh no it shouldn’t have happened” is so disrespectful to us watching… like. Just don’t watch it, period. No one’s forcing you

Glad you're looking forward to the next season. I disagree, I don't feel there is anything wrong with critiquing a show. There's a difference between railing on the show and finding flaws in it. There's no reason to rail on the show or look for every reason in the book to hate it, but there's nothing wrong with critiquing the flaws of the show as long as you are not saying everyone should hate it. Other people critiquing the show should not be any reflection on whether you enjoy it or not. It's awesome that you enjoy the show, but that doesn't mean others can't critique things they don't like about it as long as they are doing so in a constructive and respectful manner.

As someone who has not watched it yet, and has no opinion on it because of it, I feel it is completely fair for someone to want the show to be cancelled because they have actually seen it and given it a chance and found it bad

Idk how the tax thing works. But I'm 100% sure Holiday Haunt would've given them much more money than this.

Not if it was released to streaming like originally planned. As it stands, both would make WB exactly $0. Zaslav was correct that Holiday Haunt was too expensive for a streaming product but the actual solution should’ve been to shop the finished special elsewhere

Why is this a issue? I get loads of people don't like this show but most scooby doo shows now get at least 2 seasons be cool got a lot of backlash for it's art style yet that still got 2 seasons.

Exactly. And that came down to the writing - fun for kids and some really clever stuff for older viewers.

The other difference beyond quality (which at the end of the day is just an opinion thing), from a purely objective standpoint, is just the numbers. Be Cool had a large portion of the Scooby Doo fanbase still on board for a season 2, and had kids watching it on television, Velma will have neither

I personally don’t feel the Be Cool situation is comparable to Velma’s. Most of the backlash that show got was from people hating the animation, and many of those people didn’t even watch the show. With Velma, many people who have given the show a chance seem to dislike the show for many reasons, such as the plot, poorly developed writing, and the way the characters are portrayed. So it’s not necessarily an “issue,” it’s just that many of us who have given the show a chance don’t feel that season 1 was enjoyable enough to look forward to a season 2.

Be Cool Scooby-Doo had a set contract of 52 episodes. Same with Guess Who and Mystery Incorporated. Velma on the other hand had renewals. Meaning this show was chosen to be picked up again. Any of the other shows could’ve been renewed as well, but they had to finish their contractual commitments. HBO only ordered 10 episodes originally, this was announced in their first announcement of the show. But with that, Be Cool Scooby-Doo was made for 7 year olds. They have those series and movies tested by the target audience. Even if there was hate for the art style by older audiences, WB did not care because it wasn’t made for them. Be Cool Scooby-Doo tested very well with children. As for Velma, this was for an adult audience. When people gave criticisms they should be listened to because this is the only project older Scooby fans have a role in criticizing. So it is pretty shocking when their target audience didn’t like it and it wasn’t already contracted to get another season. Especially with their trigger happy cancels on other projects even though they tested well.

I imagine they're going solely off streams alone, so even all the hate-watchers counted towards streams and it ultimately got this renewed.

This site indicates that season 2 of Velma will also consist of 10 episodes.
