Yes, you read the title correctly. In a shocking turn of events, Scooby-Doo and Krypto Too! was suddenly leaked in full online today. I'm imagining what may have happened is that Mystery Pups getting its distribution cancelled after the show was deep in development was the final straw for somebody at WB, and they leaked the film. Either way, this is very surprising news and a first in the 54 years of the franchise.
To be entirely honest, I wasn't particularly sure whether I should post this review or not since I am unsure if there'd be any issue with discussing an unreleased movie. However, I've heard some other folks in the fandom have created videos and even posted clips from the leak online, so I assume it's okay to simply talk about the film even if it hasn't been released. Just to be safe though, I want to provide a disclaimer that all information from this post comes from my good friend, Johnny. I would never, ever watch an unreleased film and when my friend Johnny told me that he had, I gave him a hefty scolding about the dangers of watching non-official content (but only after he told me a detailed summary of the entire film) lol. (Seriously though, if anyone who worked on the film happens to be reading this and has an issue with me talking about a film that was not released, please feel free to let me know and I'll be happy to take this article down immediately if it poses any issue) Scooby-Doo and Krypto Too! was a great film, and I would argue that this is how a crossover should be done. In most crossovers, the guest star is coming into Scooby's universe, so it was neat that this film felt like the gang was going into Superman's universe. The film follows the gang trying to rescue the Justice League, after the appearance of a golden ghost. The Legion of Doom is also here, meaning there are quite a few villains of the film. Most of them don't show up a lot, but notably Scooby thinks Solomon Grundy is The Creeper, and Fred has a crush on Harley Quinn. I found it interesting that Fraphne was more heavily implied here than in any other movie other than Stage Fright. It's still kind of an unspoken thing between them, but Fred has a lot of jealousy over Daphne's former love interest, Jimmy Jones, and Daphne seems to acknowledge that Fred is jealous. I am not really a big DC fan personally, so I do not know a lot about that universe other than I've seen the recent films, and plan to see Shazam when it comes out. Despite that, I thought the film was still appealing even to someone who does not have a lot of familiarity with DC. The scenes with the gang in the Daily Planet were nice, and it was interesting to see the gang's interactions with some of the heroes and villains. Krypto was the star of the film for me. Despite not talking, he was such a cute character and his friendship with Scooby was adorable. The film framed the gang as knowing all the other heroes and villains, yet they did not know Krypto which I was surprised by. There's a brief aside from Daphne where she says "we know Batman," which seems to be a reference either to the current line of comics, or their previous times meeting Batman in the episodes and films. I particularly thought Krypto shined during the scene with a "Kitchen of Superfriends," which is a holographic room that manifests whatever you say. It was cool to see him save the day and come to the rescue, even when Shaggy and Scooby were unable to. Lex Luthor and Rex Luthor (his dog lol) were perhaps the most notable and interesting characters here. It's referenced that Lex was former president of the United States, which I know is canon from the DC universe. There's sort of an odd joke made where Lex brags about how much power he has as president, and Velma says "but you didn't win the popular vote!", which oddly felt like a reference to the recent political landscape haha. There's a gag where Lex Luthor keeps getting lost, and to be entirely honest, that was the only part of the movie that wasn't great. The joke wasn't really even that funny the first time, so I don't know why they needed to keep going back to it. Compared to Velma's humor though, literally anything would be an improvement, so it didn't bother me that much. Another improvement over past movies is that I didn't feel hit over the head with references. I don't know what it was like for those who are familiar with DC, but I found the few that they included to be cute, like the "Challenge of the Superfries" restaurant and the smoke spelling "happy birthday Second Robin!" when Fred activated Batman's belt. Speaking of which, Batman is nowhere to be found in this film, and even the Justice League is not in any part of the film until the last five minutes. Only Superman and Wonder Woman speak, and the rest have non-speaking roles. It becomes kind of funny at the end, as during the final moment of the movie, Scooby says his catchphrase and Krypto barks, while The Flash just randomly stands there smiling, not saying anything lol. I have a few other random comments that I wrote down, the first of those being that the Scooby Snax box design from Cyber Chase is used in this film, I believe for the first time in 20+ years, which was a really interesting touch. Fred's catchphrase "Hold the phone" is seemingly gone (thankfully, I never liked that tbh), as there's a joke mid-way through the film where all the gang says their catchphrases and Fred just says "run!" I liked the chase song quite a bit. One oddly funny bit in the film that was among my favorites is when Scooby asks "Shaggy, are we strays?" after Velma says Krypto is probably a stray, and Shaggy gets the most serious look in his eyes and flatly says "yep" lol. I won't go too much into this bit as not to ruin anything about the ending, but the twist at the end was fun. I admit I kinda saw part of it coming, but there were still parts that were surprising, and I didn't expect the gold ghost to be who it was. It was really fascinating how the gang gives the explanation of the ghost being "swamp gas" to Lex; it almost felt like it was mocking Return to Zombie Island for Velma giving that explanation, as "swamp gas" seems so oddly specific, and they weren't even in a swamp. Overall, I really liked how this movie felt like a shared universe between the Justice League and Scooby-Doo, and neither one overshadowed the other. In fact, I feel like the Justice League being absent for all but the last five minutes, and giving focus to the side characters like Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, allowed the mystery to develop in a more natural way where it did not feel like the guest star was out of place or dominating the episode, like it sometimes did in Guess Who. The film felt quite cinematic and I have to say I really enjoyed this. I'd probably rank it at #26 in my movie rankings, above Chill Out but below Pirates Ahoy. It's such a shame this will likely never be released, and it's even more of a bummer to think about the fact that the only thing coming up right now seems to be Velma season 2. It's very weird to think that a finished film like this is just going to float out there in the abyss, never seeing the light of day, but today has probably been one of the most action-packed days in the franchise between Mystery Pups losing its distribution rights and an unreleased Scooby-Doo movie getting leaked for the first time ever on the same day. It will be a weird road forward, and I wish I would have better appreciated the plethora of Scooby media we got in 2021 given we ended up going in a direction with barely any Scooby content last year, and it's increasingly looking like the same this year. However, I'm hopeful we can get back to a spot where we are getting at least one DTV a year, and have some Scooby content on the horizon.

Since this happened with this long awaited movie, who knows, if we’re lucky, maybe SCOOB Holiday Haunt might get leaked somehow. We’ll just have to wait and see what the mysteries hold for us Scooby fans.

That would be nice if Holiday Haunt could see a release somehow. It will be interesting to see the road forward now that everything but Velma season 2 seems like it will be cancelled.

Me too! I was surprised how much Fraphne was in the film as well. The Velma and Wonder Woman thing was sweet, I liked that. The Harley Quinn inconsistency didn't really bother me all that much tbh. It makes sense you were frustrated about it though, I guess I'm just so used to the franchise having pretty much no continuity from iteration to iteration that it doesn't bother me unless it's glaring like it was in Curse of the 13th Ghost and Return to Zombie Island.

Unrelated but, all of these recent cancellations of the franchise made me think that WB doesn't think Scooby can't stand on his own anymore. 3/5/2023 03:13:09 pm
Yeah, I agree that they are probably trying to increase the appeal by having all of these crossovers, both for the novelty of it and to try to tie in fans of other franchises. I've definitely noticed that pattern as well and I find it interesting that they are relying so much on crossovers or flashbacks to old media. To be fair though, nostalgia is becoming increasingly profitable, but at the same time that also goes to your point that WB is worried that people won't be nostalgic enough about Scooby that they'd buy just a DTV with a normal premise.

We don’t even know if this is still intended for an official release or not. All the DC and entertainment news websites are probably checking with their legal departments to see if they’re even allowed to acknowledge this

We don't know who leaked it, but somebody posted a link on 4chan. I personally thought the way it happened was pretty funny and epic; someone had asked what ever happened to the Krypto film, and the leak was a response to that person's comment, with a link to watch the film in full lol.

Lmao, what a madlad. Whoever that was, I hope they've got their hands on the other canned films too. 3/5/2023 12:14:09 pm
I think there’s only one other canned film that was watchable though, right? Haunted High Rise never entered the animation stage, it was just the script and dialogue that had been done. I believe Holiday Haunt is the only other finished one.

I haven't seen it yet, but I can tell this film will be treated as kind of the "forbidden fruit" of the franchise (for lack of a better term), since WB will likely never officially release it (maybe they will, but the more time passes the less likely it is). The last 7 months have been wild lol. But I guess this leak does continue the streak of at least one Scooby movie per year since 1998, as unorthodoxly as possible, but continued streak monetheless.

Yeah, it seems like the film will have a cult following due to the obscurity of it. I am guessing they won't release it and they won't be able to acknowledge it, but I'm not really sure. It's worth noting the film has a 2023 date at the end, meaning it was completed recently and was intended for release this year.

If it does indeed have a 2023 release at the end, perhaps the plan was to promote/release it the same way Trick or Treat was last year. The chances that was their plan are still low though.

The thng to bear in mind is that it may never get a physical/digital release since it has been leaked online. We do know that the movie has been completed but it may have been scrapped upon completion hence the reason why this got leaked. 3/5/2023 12:59:39 pm
@Becker That's certainly possible. Yeah, I know it wasn't officially cancelled but if they do not find another distributor, it will be. Somebody else mentioned they've been shopping Batman: Caped Crusader around for a few months now to no avail, so I hope that's not the fate of this series too.

From what I've heard Google has gotten less good with its search algorithm, so it's hard to say there, could be searching the wrong keywords, could just be running into the articles about it and not the actual link instead. I found the drive link that wouldn't work and only found archive because I thought to check there, otherwise I'd probably have given up for the night. 3/5/2023 03:03:53 pm
That's a good point, it's near the bottom of the first page for me when I search the title of the film. I have heard Google is giving different people different results though based on location, so it's possible it's not near the top for others or their search algorithm isn't all that good anymore.

I haven't seen it yet, and I do have mixed feelings about this film being leaked. While this maybe a win for us, because of how much WBD has cancelled, and this may be a kick to the crotch for them, I do worry what this could mean for the future of Scooby Doo.

I don't have much knowledge of copyright but I am very curious to see if WB is going to acknowledge this film's existence or not. I also worry what this could mean for the future of Scooby. Usually, we always find out the title of the next DTV or two a year or more in advance, and now, there's nothing on the horizon other than Velma season 2. Definitely a sad time for Scooby, and I hope this doesn't mean they're going to stop their pattern of putting out a DTV every year. Although I guess we're safe for this year, since this would technically count haha.

It does suck that all these Scooby doo project s are getting cancelled but I am still optimistic because despite the cancellations Scooby doo is one of their cash cows that has a big fanbase I doubt they are just going to easily let go of the franchise and while the projects we know about got scrapped that doesn't rule out the possibility of other Scooby doo content being made that we don't know about yet . I also feel like the cancellations have something to do with wanting the franchise to focus on the classic formula with the exception of Velma.

I don't think they'll completely kill the franchise either. Worst case scenario, we might not get a lot of Scooby for a while if WB is in as much financial trouble as they seem to be with all the cancellations. I hope there is other Scooby stuff being made that we don't know about. It would be great to get another series or DTV in the near future!

I have little to no knowledge of Hollywood accounting or finances, but yeah, I also agree it would be weird if they just let this leak without releasing it. It seems equally likely that either they'll pretend it never existed, or they will give it a physical release. I'm not really sure which. I'm leaning more towards it won't be released since the leak likely means they scrapped it, but it's also possible that the leak will encourage them to give it a release given the good reviews. Who knows.

I'm a big DC fan, and I thought the crossover was handled almost perfectly. Given how Lex is Superman's archenemy, I think the gang should have been a bit more cautious around him. I also remember Krypto was able to talk in his own TV show, or at least other animals were able to speak to each other, so I think at least Scooby and Krypto should have been able to talk to each other. Other than those issues, I think the movie turned out great.

Well that was peculiar. After finding a link over on twitter I was glad to watch the film. Overall I'd give it a 6.5 due to the mystery being a little lacking and oversimplified, along with the fact that, like Guess Who, to much focus is given to the guest stars than the overall mystery. Furthermore the ending seemed to drag and was more like, damn we haven't hit the necessary time limit, Over elongated end battle. Same thing with the Grundy chase scene. The humour though was on point, from the invisible tank, to the kitchen, Solomon Grundy's love of Scooby, kock em sock em robots, cheapo tours etc. But as stated to much filler and focusing on guest stars, not enough mystery or effort put into the mystery.

3/5/2023 03:17:41 pm
Yeah, this is never how I would have expected to see the film haha. I actually found the level of guest star focus to be good. The fact that the Justice League were absent for so much of the film and it was just the side characters worked better for me. It didn't feel like the side characters were overbearing or distracting from the mystery in any way. The fight scene was a little bit long but I didn't find it too big of a deal, it was still enjoyable. I loved the humor in this film, so many moments were spot-on. I liked Grundy's love of Scooby at the end too, that was really cute haha.

For me, the absence of the justice league is actually a negative as it's very difficult to explain how so many super powered individuals can just suddenly disappear. Grundy's love of Scooby was Def cute. 3/6/2023 08:37:26 am
Fair enough, they didn't really go into how they disappeared until the last few minutes. It didn't bother me personally though.

I liked this movie too. Krypto was adorable! I didn't mind that Krypto didn't talk. His friendship with Scooby was still cute and I think it worked well he could only speak in barks. Oddly, it did feel a little like Lex was a part of the gang for a little while there. I was also expecting him to be good in this movie, but I was definitely wrong there. I loved the twist at the end. The final showdown went on a tad long but overall I thought it was good. I suspected it was Mercy from the beginning but didn't realize Lex would be in all the whole thing. I really liked that the Phantoms were the Justice League too! I wasn't expecting that. I liked the chase scene and song as well! Yeah, it was funny about Scooby calling him the Creeper. I thought it was super cute that he just wanted to play with Scooby!

The trailer for Trick or Treat release less than 2 months before it came out. Since the end credits of this movie claim a 2023 release, maybe the plan was to release it in October, with a trailer in August. But that's wishful thinking with the way WB runs right now though. 3/9/2023 01:42:14 pm
