Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? Episode 44 Review

I thought this was an average but enjoyable episode! Jessica Biel's presence in the episode didn't seem super prominent to me, she sort of felt like she was just there. I was a little disappointed by the villain being just a plain gorilla (though, spoilers, it was funny that it ended up being a gorilla in a gorilla suit) haha. The masked person was kind of a lame villain as well, as they've done that so many times. I liked the jungle setting as well, and it was cool how they reused the audio clip from the island in "Hassle in the Castle" at the beginning of this episode again (just like in "Lost Soles of Jungle River!"). Scooby and the leopard cub was also super cute and reminded me a lot of Scooby with the chick in "Jeepers, It's the Creeper" and the frog in "Mamba Wamba and the Voodoo Hoodoo."

Overall, it was an interesting episode but it wasn't anything special, even though it was by no means a bad episode. This ranks 36/45 for me.

Definitely agree with your points. A couple things I'd like to add was the callback to Never Ape an Apeman with the bridge scene was a personal highlight of the episode. The "chase" scene in the tree house was a huge waste of time, and all the environments felt very rushed.

How did you see the episode? Is there a Google Drive link to it?

@WildwindVampire How cool and unique would it be if we got an adult spin off of Scooby Doo called The Faux Ghost, which centers on the unmasked villains post mysteries, and their daily lives? A show that develops and humanizes the villains and fleshes them out as real people and not just cartoon bad guys

I really wanted to enjoy this episode but no, it was a big letdown and I was really looking forward to this jungle setting too. I personally think lost soles did it better.
On a higher note, i saw Dark Diner yesterday and I really liked that episode!

@Adrian Johansson yes in fact I have a deviantart page where I made my own designs and characters for my own take on Scooby Doo including a spin off right here based on that idea, The Faux Ghost

I just saw the episode and thought it was good but could’ve been better. To me, Jessica Biel was a good guest star and wasn’t just there. It was kind of a downer that it was just a plain old gorilla. I liked that the twist was it was gorilla in a gorilla costume the whole time. The baby Jaguar or Leopard was like the chick, the frog, Jacko and Little Pete.

Also W.B. Shuggs looks like Sam Farren from A Bum Steer For Scooby and Dan Marrimbas looks like Professor Promfrit from Big Appetite In Little Tokyo.

Oh wow! I guess perception is everything because this was actually one of my favorite episodes. I absolutely loves the chase scenes and the animation was gorgeous. There never seemed to be a dull moment in the episode and I loved that.

My only gripe is I wished they would’ve gone with the original idea. It was supposed to be a monstrous version of the Purple Ape and when they unmasked it it would’ve been the actual purple ape. But unfortunately WB shut that idea down.

That would’ve been perfect in my opinion. Nevertheless I really loved the episode and it’s in my top 4 easily.

Using the Grape Ape and/or an original idea would have been amazing, and a lot better than what we got IMO.

And if anyone is wondering when I mentioned the purple ape I was referring to the Hannah Barbers cartoon the The Great Grape Ape. It was supposed to be a monstrous version of him to kind of pay homage to HB shows but WB shit down the idea and didn’t want anymore HB shows. Which is unfortunate because that idea sounded AMAZING.

I just thought of something. In the New Scooby Doo Movies intro, we see the gang being chased by King Kong. In the first Sandy Duncan episode, Shaggy mentioned that he and Scooby were being chased by King Kong. In this episode, the monster is a giant gorilla. I wonder if they got they idea of this episode from that.

No this was definetely a throwback to Never Ape an Ape Man imo. There's a literal bridge scene similar to the original.

I know I haven't seen this new episode yet but...I don't think we shouldn't be jumping to conclutions about it, because we all know the old saying (Never Judge a Book by it's Cover) Plus I found a picture of the Giant Ape Man and I thought he looked pretty damn cool in terms of design. So I think maybe this episode will turn out alright for me.

Why are people moaning, good old classic Scooby Doo for me. Yes there was quite a fair amount of filler and running round the jungle in this one but an intriguing mystery that kept you guessing till the end. Nothing great but nothing bad either, 23/45

True, I think I'm more traditionalist and want the focus to be more on the mystery and the gang than the guest star!

Totally makes sense. I personally just think if they include guest stars, they should add something significant to the plot, which I didn't feel Jessica Biel did here.

I personally really enjoyed this one! The setting was amazing and it did have a lot of filler but this time it was actually fun. The one big complaint I have is about the hooded villian. This is like "Haunted House Hang up" where you can see who the villian is since only the torso upwards is covered. If the hooded villian wasn't so bad, this episode may be higher but it's still good! This ranks 6/18 for me and some of my rankings have changed. I warn you, you may get mad at what I put at the bottom.

1. The Dreaded Remake of Jekyll and Hyde!
2. The Horrible Haunted Hospital Of Dr. Phineas Phrag!
3. A Fashion Nightmare!
4. Returning Of The Keyring!
5. The Internet On The Haunted House Hill!

I feel like they overdo the door scene so I didn't mind that it was short haha. I didn't like that the hooded villain was only costumed from the torso up either, that was super lame and like you said similar to Asa Shanks' disguise in "Haunted House Hang-Up" which I hated.

The scenes between Scooby and the leopard cub (whose gender was quite ambiguous, first it was a girl, then a "little guy", lol) are probably the best thing to come out of the whole series. They were just so darn cute! The rest of the episode was pretty average. The scene with the traps was clearly a rip-off of "Dark Night of the Hunters" from SDMI.

If I do get an account, I want to ask if I can use some elements from your Monsters and Villains, because some of my villain creations are either combinations or uses some elements of your SD monsters. I'll make sure to give credit to you in my inspirations, which in turn could send some people to check out your work.

I know Scooby and the gang have had their share of previous encounters with wild ape men before, but I feel like this is the very first time they have ever run into a giant gorilla in the entire Scooby-Doo franchise overall. Unless you count the one that was used in the intro for The New Scooby-Doo Movies that is.
