I thought this was an average but enjoyable episode! Jessica Biel's presence in the episode didn't seem super prominent to me, she sort of felt like she was just there. I was a little disappointed by the villain being just a plain gorilla (though, spoilers, it was funny that it ended up being a gorilla in a gorilla suit) haha. The masked person was kind of a lame villain as well, as they've done that so many times. I liked the jungle setting as well, and it was cool how they reused the audio clip from the island in "Hassle in the Castle" at the beginning of this episode again (just like in "Lost Soles of Jungle River!"). Scooby and the leopard cub was also super cute and reminded me a lot of Scooby with the chick in "Jeepers, It's the Creeper" and the frog in "Mamba Wamba and the Voodoo Hoodoo."
Overall, it was an interesting episode but it wasn't anything special, even though it was by no means a bad episode. This ranks 36/45 for me.

Definitely agree with your points. A couple things I'd like to add was the callback to Never Ape an Apeman with the bridge scene was a personal highlight of the episode. The "chase" scene in the tree house was a huge waste of time, and all the environments felt very rushed.
3/25/2021 11:59:44 am
How did you see the episode? Is there a Google Drive link to it?
3/25/2021 12:16:55 pm
3/26/2021 10:54:56 am
Oh yeah, I guess I did notice that. I agree the environments felt really rushed though which was a huge bummer.

@WildwindVampire How cool and unique would it be if we got an adult spin off of Scooby Doo called The Faux Ghost, which centers on the unmasked villains post mysteries, and their daily lives? A show that develops and humanizes the villains and fleshes them out as real people and not just cartoon bad guys
3/25/2021 11:56:19 am
I really wanted to enjoy this episode but no, it was a big letdown and I was really looking forward to this jungle setting too. I personally think lost soles did it better.
3/26/2021 10:55:13 am
Glad you liked Dark Diner!

@Ethan Cleveland sounds interesting. Have you made anything with that ide or is it just a thought?
3/27/2021 09:00:27 am
Me too! So good that I decided to put it in my top 10 too!
3/27/2021 09:51:35 am
@Adrian Johansson yes in fact I have a deviantart page where I made my own designs and characters for my own take on Scooby Doo including a spin off right here based on that idea, The Faux Ghost
3/27/2021 09:56:25 am
ok but how is faux ghost relevant in a conversation about dark diner
3/27/2021 10:11:47 am
Its not. I just want to have a chat and there's no other place on the blog I could but here
3/27/2021 10:17:14 am
oh yknow theres the bottom of this thread or maybe a blog that is literally more recent than this one xd

That's cool, Ethan!

I just saw the episode and thought it was good but could’ve been better. To me, Jessica Biel was a good guest star and wasn’t just there. It was kind of a downer that it was just a plain old gorilla. I liked that the twist was it was gorilla in a gorilla costume the whole time. The baby Jaguar or Leopard was like the chick, the frog, Jacko and Little Pete.
3/25/2021 01:37:09 pm
Also W.B. Shuggs looks like Sam Farren from A Bum Steer For Scooby and Dan Marrimbas looks like Professor Promfrit from Big Appetite In Little Tokyo.
3/25/2021 01:56:43 pm
Oh wow! I guess perception is everything because this was actually one of my favorite episodes. I absolutely loves the chase scenes and the animation was gorgeous. There never seemed to be a dull moment in the episode and I loved that.
3/30/2021 11:51:27 am
Using the Grape Ape and/or an original idea would have been amazing, and a lot better than what we got IMO.
3/25/2021 02:00:30 pm
And if anyone is wondering when I mentioned the purple ape I was referring to the Hannah Barbers cartoon the The Great Grape Ape. It was supposed to be a monstrous version of him to kind of pay homage to HB shows but WB shit down the idea and didn’t want anymore HB shows. Which is unfortunate because that idea sounded AMAZING.
3/25/2021 02:17:14 pm
WB *what* down the idea? LOL!
3/25/2021 02:43:16 pm
@Bigscoobydoofan Oh my! I’m so sorry I meant to write SHUT the I is so close to the U on the keyboard. Is there anyway I can’t edit that? I’m so sorry! Lol

Still not as bad as the time my classmate wrote shit instead of ship on his homework.
3/26/2021 10:56:35 am
Unfortunately no, you can't edit comments! It's okay lol. That would have been super cool though!
3/25/2021 02:22:02 pm
I just thought of something. In the New Scooby Doo Movies intro, we see the gang being chased by King Kong. In the first Sandy Duncan episode, Shaggy mentioned that he and Scooby were being chased by King Kong. In this episode, the monster is a giant gorilla. I wonder if they got they idea of this episode from that.
3/25/2021 02:29:27 pm
No this was definetely a throwback to Never Ape an Ape Man imo. There's a literal bridge scene similar to the original.
3/25/2021 02:47:48 pm
Yah I noticed that the bridge part is definitely a call back to Never Ape an Ape Man.
3/25/2021 05:54:34 pm
Also Jeepers its the Jaguaro
3/26/2021 10:57:19 am
Could be! I'm not sure!
3/25/2021 04:02:14 pm
I know I haven't seen this new episode yet but...I don't think we shouldn't be jumping to conclutions about it, because we all know the old saying (Never Judge a Book by it's Cover) Plus I found a picture of the Giant Ape Man and I thought he looked pretty damn cool in terms of design. So I think maybe this episode will turn out alright for me.
3/25/2021 04:05:26 pm
No, we've seen the episode, we're not jumping to conclusions.
3/25/2021 04:43:10 pm
Your wording makes it sound like you're saying other people here besides you are also jumping to conclusions even though they have actually seen this episode in order to formulate their genuine opinion on it.
3/25/2021 05:56:40 pm
Why are people moaning, good old classic Scooby Doo for me. Yes there was quite a fair amount of filler and running round the jungle in this one but an intriguing mystery that kept you guessing till the end. Nothing great but nothing bad either, 23/45
3/26/2021 10:58:02 am
I actually kinda guessed you would like this one, as it seems we have opposite opinions on many of these episodes haha.
3/26/2021 11:47:48 am
True, I think I'm more traditionalist and want the focus to be more on the mystery and the gang than the guest star!
3/27/2021 09:43:24 am
Totally makes sense. I personally just think if they include guest stars, they should add something significant to the plot, which I didn't feel Jessica Biel did here.
3/26/2021 01:24:46 am
1. The Last Inmate!
3/26/2021 01:57:45 am
The only one you're missing is A Run Cycle Through Time. The reason you think you missed two is because you put two episodes as 12.
3/26/2021 02:15:56 am
3/26/2021 02:25:51 am
1. The Last Inmate!
3/26/2021 10:58:31 am
Very nice list and I'd say very similar to mine for the most part.
3/26/2021 03:43:28 am
I personally really enjoyed this one! The setting was amazing and it did have a lot of filler but this time it was actually fun. The one big complaint I have is about the hooded villian. This is like "Haunted House Hang up" where you can see who the villian is since only the torso upwards is covered. If the hooded villian wasn't so bad, this episode may be higher but it's still good! This ranks 6/18 for me and some of my rankings have changed. I warn you, you may get mad at what I put at the bottom.
3/26/2021 03:44:26 am
Oh and I was quite disappointed the door scene was short in this one since it was creative with the vines.
3/26/2021 06:40:44 am
Yah I was also bummed that the door scene in this episode was short. I like how creative it was with the vines. Like, the Key ring episode with the toilets and display doors.
3/26/2021 10:59:53 am
I feel like they overdo the door scene so I didn't mind that it was short haha. I didn't like that the hooded villain was only costumed from the torso up either, that was super lame and like you said similar to Asa Shanks' disguise in "Haunted House Hang-Up" which I hated.
3/27/2021 08:54:09 am
Yeah but atleast it would've been a more entertaining door scene.
3/26/2021 06:49:16 pm
The scenes between Scooby and the leopard cub (whose gender was quite ambiguous, first it was a girl, then a "little guy", lol) are probably the best thing to come out of the whole series. They were just so darn cute! The rest of the episode was pretty average. The scene with the traps was clearly a rip-off of "Dark Night of the Hunters" from SDMI.
3/27/2021 09:47:39 am
I didn't even think about how they changed the gender of the leopard cub midway through haha. He/she was super cute though :)
3/27/2021 09:09:16 am
Guess what? I have just watched this episode today and I must say I thought it was pretty damn epic and totally awesome! I give it a double thumbs up.
3/27/2021 09:47:05 am
Glad you liked it so much!
3/28/2021 07:07:30 am
Hey Wildwind you’ve noticed that W.B. Shuggs looks like Sam Farren from A Bum Steer For Scooby and Dan Marrimbas looks like Professor Promfrit from Big Appetite In Little Tokyo.
3/28/2021 10:33:11 am
I actually didn't think about that, but you're right!
3/28/2021 03:12:43 pm
@Drakosleuth Thanx! How long have you known about my art? Have you shared it with others and if you're a deviant yourself, could you send me a response please?
3/28/2021 04:00:14 pm
I've known about your art I believe since somewhere in the beginning of this year, and I'm afraid I haven't shared with others, and no, I do not have an account, but I have considered getting an account so I can comment and maybe post my own art. BTW, can I ask you a couple of questions?
3/28/2021 06:44:26 pm
What kind of questions? Also could you share with other people on this blog?
3/28/2021 07:03:00 pm
1. If I do get an account, I want to ask if I can use some elements from your Monsters and Villains, because some of my villain creations are either combinations or uses some elements of your SD monsters. I'll make sure to give credit to you in my inspirations, which in turn could send some people to check out your work.
3/28/2021 07:05:05 pm
Sure, I think I can do that.
9/30/2022 03:52:01 pm
I know Scooby and the gang have had their share of previous encounters with wild ape men before, but I feel like this is the very first time they have ever run into a giant gorilla in the entire Scooby-Doo franchise overall. Unless you count the one that was used in the intro for The New Scooby-Doo Movies that is.
9/30/2022 10:23:31 pm
They run into one in "Scooby of the Jungle" in The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show as well.
