Scooby Apocalypse Questions Answered

3/31/2016

When vague details of the upcoming Scooby Apocalypse comic series came out in January, fans were left with many questions as to how the comic series would turn out. What would it be rated? Would Scrappy be evil? What will the covers and designs look like? DC Comics released some more tidbits about the series early this week, including the answers to all of these questions plus a summary and cover of the second issue. Here are some of the key points that have been revealed so far?

What will Scooby Apocalypse be rated?
The comics will all have a T (teen) rating.

Will Scrappy be a good guy or a villain?
It has been confirmed by DC's press release for issue 2 of the series (I'll talk more about that later in the post) that Scrappy will be evil, as he was in the first live action movie.

We've seen some of the designs for the characters, but what will the actual covers look like?

Also, in addition to the 5 covers shown above, Midtown Comics revealed that there would also be a blank cover and an adult coloring book cover.

Some more details were also revealed on the series and how it was created at Wondercon over this past weekend. I wasn't personally there, but someone from Newsarama gave a very detailed account of the new info that was revealed at Wondercon (note that I'm only posting the Scooby-related comments, if you're interested in the other HB reboot comics you can click the Newsrama link above):

16:37
He pointed to Scooby Apocalypse as an example of a new twist on classic characters. He compared it to Scooby-Doo meets the Walking Dead.

16:40
Javins showed off some variant covers for Scooby Apocalypse from Dan Panosian and Ben Caldwell. They also showed off Howard Porter's designs for the characters. Javins says the book breaks Scooby Doo's one rule, that "the ghosts aren't real."

16:41
Some uncolored interior pages by Howard Porter were shown.

16:42
Fred and Daphne have a reality show where they debunk ghosts. Meanwhile, Scooby wears a device on his collar that shows his thoughts as holographic representations rather than his usual stilted speech.

16:43
DiDio said their Scooby Apocalypse idea was heavily influenced by Afterlife With Archie.

16:43
DiDio clarified that the youth focused Scooby Doo and Hanna Barbera line would continue to be published.

16:44
DiDio said Howard Porter chose working on Scooby Apocalypse over any other DC Universe property.

16:44
JM DeMatteis is scripting Scooby Apocalypse.

16:45
Lee jumped right into hyping Scooby Apocalypse, saying they wanted to do something more adult.

16:46
Lee said the Scooby gang meets at Burning Man, meanwhile Fred and Daphne are YouTube stars.

16:47
Lee said the story is about a think tank where young geniuses come together to fix the world through an app that controls nanites, which are activated by a visual meme that is revealed at Burning Man.

16:48
The app is meant to eliminate suffering, anger, and war, but their nanites mutated, bringing out the worst in people, "Hense Donald Trump!" quipped Lee.

16:49
The nanites cause people to become werewolves and monsters. Scooby Doo is a genetic experiment, and Shaggy is his handler. Velma is one of the geniuses working on the app.

17:00
DiDio kicked it over to Lee to offer his unifying vision of the entire Hanna-Barbera universe.

17:01
In Lee's mind, Wacky Raceland is the dystopian future that follows Scooby Apocalypse. He also mentioned that every prominent readhead - from Pebbles to Daphne to Jane from the Jetsons - are connected.

17:02
The Jetsons will have to travel through time to prevent the apocalypse of Scooby Doo. The series will also explore the multiverse.

17:05
A former animator for Hanna Barbera asked how DC plans to market the series to hardcore fans who are worried that their favorite characters are changing.

17:06
DiDio reminded him that they'll continue to publish the classic versions of the characters, but that they are also major fans of the characters.

The Monday after the panel was conducted, DC also revealed the official press release of the second issue, which is below:
