The controversy over whether the Ship Captain is one of the 13 ghosts is well known, since it's never explicitly stated in the episode whether he is one of the demons from the chest. However, one interesting fact I observed upon rewatching the series is that Vincent and the other main characters never mention Rankor by name at any point in the episode, or even acknowledge him for that matter (with the exception of the end scene when they put him in the chest, and when Vincent is turned to stone).

Personally I've always considered Rankor and Captain Ferguson as part of the 13 ghosts

I consider the captain part of the 13 ghosts, but I'm not so sure about Rankor. It dawned on me the other day when I was watching it, and I feel it honestly makes more sense for him to be just a random vampire rather than one of the 13 ghosts haha.

I never noticed this before but I think this is right

I hadn't noticed it before a few weeks ago either, but yeah, it doesn't make sense to me why he'd be trying to get into a low-level demon organization, and have no idea what the Demon Chest is, unless he wasn't one of the 13 ghosts.

Never classify the ghost captain myself, Rankor well, he's just rank.

Haha I consider him rank too. Him willingly going into the Demon Chest always bothered me, so I think this explanation makes a lot more sense.

Agreed! 1/3/2023 09:26:50 pm
Someone brought to my attention that there is a brief line from Rankor which I didn't catch that unfortunately disproved my original theory ("You kept me in the chest of demons, Van Ghoul"). I've edited the fun fact accordingly.

So he was 100% one of the 13 ghosts then. I figured it was highly unlikely for the crew to just make a random episode featuring a random monster not from the chest yet still end up in the chest, considering the limited amount of episodes. To say it as it is, it all just comes down to simply bad writing on the Rankor front and that's about it lol. To me the only good thing from Curse of the 13th Ghost is that it puts to bed the dilemma of how many ghosts had been captured during the show.

Yeah that was my bad lol. I mean, you could argue the Ghost Captain wasn't one of the thirteen ghosts, although I think he is. I just always have found it really horrible writing to make Rankor willingly go into the chest, and be subservient to some low-level demon organization.

Every show has its highs and lows. This episode and Rankor himself in particular is purely just a low. Tbf, these are just 13 of the most terrifying ghosts upon the face of the Earth, not necessarily 13 of the smartest lol. 1/4/2023 11:29:04 am
That's fair haha. I actually kind of like the episode and really like Rankor's design, so it's a shame they wasted his potential so much and gave him such a goofy voice.

Maybe he was one of the 13 Ghosts. Maybe.

To be fair, Vincent did capture every ghost on the ship in "Ship of Ghouls" and all the cemetery ghouls in "A Spooky Little Ghoul Like You" in the chest, so it's possible. Rankor does say "You kept me in the chest of demons, Van Ghoul" briefly at the beginning so he's definitely connected to the chest.

He did? Wow, I barely remember any of that. I’m definitely gonna have to rewatch this series cause I haven’t seen it in so long! It’s definitely time for me to revisit it. 1/6/2023 10:49:21 am
I didn't catch it when I rewatched it recently, but somebody sent me an email about it, and I remember the line now that they brought it up. I just rewatched the series for the first time in a while a few weeks ago, and I really enjoyed it! Leave a Reply. |
