Fun Fact of the Week #413

Picture
The first Daphne & Velma novel states that Luna's real name is Kimberly Moss, and gives Dusk the real name of Muffy St. James. These were never official names given to them in any of the appearances they had in previous official Scooby media. These names appeared frequently in Scooby-Doo fanfiction stories, so frequently in fact that they have sort of been unofficially adopted for the characters. These names appear in numerous stories by different authors across many different fanfiction sites. At one point, these were listed as the characters' real names on Wikipedia, until they were removed in 2019 for being unsourced. I knew about these fan-created names in the fanfiction world, but it dawned on me after someone brought it up to me via email this weekend that many fans might not know where these names originated from.

So if these names aren't official, where did they come from? It seems they first derived from this 2009 blog post from Timothy Brennan, highlighting a very imaginative idea for a Hex Girls series featuring various special musical guest stars including Elvis and Jimi Hendrix.

The first piece of fanfiction to have included these names, at least of what I can find, is "Sanctuary" by an author named HiddenWitch from 2012.

Agreed! Personally I can’t imagine a Hex Girls/Elvis/Jimi Hendrix crossover show, but I guess there’s a first time for everything haha.

I'm glad we could get official names for them. I found it very disappointing that Luna and Dusk were left out.

However, I found it annoying having to deal with this on Scoobypedia, when people would add these fake names they never had, yet because it appeared in fan stories, it made it justifiable.

It's the same as Samuel Chastain Rogers. I can't even begin to wonder where that name came from, yet fans will fight tooth and nail against all better judgment that this name should be official.

There's a guy who worked on SCOOB, who did a voice and in the credits he is credited as Samuel Chastain, as a nod to Mr. Rogers' name. A name he has never been given.

I was bold enough kind of mention the fact that the name wasn't real. I wasn't like, "Hey, dude! That's not his name!" But I said a little something, and he was cool. I mean, it wasn't something to get into an argument about it. (Unlike some people who argue the toss about leaving the hyphen out of Scooby-Doo.)

But I'm happy that the Hex Girls got names and while these can't be attributed to their cartoon selves, we can at least have a version where they do all have real names.

It's strange they never got real names. Honestly, I think with some of these names, people just have seen them when they're added on places like Wikipedia and Scoobypedia, and then seem to take it at face value without questioning whether it was in the show or not, thus continuing the cycle. I actually didn't notice there was a guy named Samuel Chastain credited in SCOOB!, that's interesting.

In my own fanfic, I just chose to name them after their voice actors, Kimberly and Jane. I find it odd that the person in the blog post decided to name one of them after the voice actor and the other just some random name (Muffy).

Rumor of WBD canceling animated projects is apparenly false accoding to this. Accuracy matters and this is misinformation of the worst kind. WB Discovery NEVER said during their earnings call that there would be a 'broad range of cuts' to kids & animation content. Here's a look at what they said + analysis of what it means:

Thanks for the link to this analysis! I hadn't ever thought that they were going to cancel all animated projects, and it sounds like they're still on the same page that I thought they were. Seems like animated projects could see cuts, since Zaslav said that he wants to make sure each project will make WB enough money to justify creating it. That could mean that Velma, Mystery Pups and the DTVs will still be cancelled, although there's no guarantee and it sounds uncertain right now.

The Velma series may be dead according to scoobyaddicts.proboards from a source they got.

I wouldn't be surprised either. The person responded and said it was an internal link sent to him from a journalist at WB. I'll wait until there is an official announcement to make a post about it here.

It might be best if WB let the DCEU go and announced plans for new Scooby-Doo projects.

Scooby Doo and Witches Ghost:
This movie was awesome. It was as equally dark as Zombie Island. I liked the setting of Oakhaven. During the day it was beautiful and during the night it’s was creepy.

Ben Ravencroft was a really great villain. Too bad he turned out to be evil. I really liked him at as a nice guy. I know Velma was devastated since she’s a fan of his work. He saw them in the paper, they solved a case ( the moat monster from the previous film, Zombie Island) made up the whole Babylonian Mummies case in the opening so that they could meet. It’s so cool that he’s a mixture of Stephen King and HP Lovecraft. His warlock powers were super cool.

This movie was also the introduction of the Hex Girls. Thorn, Dusk and Luna were great characters. They really did a lot to be super convincing. It was cool that we got to hear their first song I’m A Hex Girl. It’s interesting to hear that Thorn’s real name is Sally and the she’s the daughter of Mr. McKnight

Shaggy and Scooby eating at the restaurant and everybody looking at them was funny haha.

I liked the Witches Ghost as a villain. Her throwing fireballs was pretty cool. Wow that whole Witches Ghost scam was to attract tourists. Mr. McKnight, Mayor Korey, Jack, Willard and Molly Parken were all in on it.

The Ghost of Sarah Ravencroft was a a super cool villain with wicked powers. She was going to destroy the whole world for her long imprisonment. Man she turned on Ben Ravencroft who just wanted to rule the world with her. Well he actually had the coming.

The ending was pretty intense. The gang calling each others names while throwing the book to each other. Thorn was able to use the book to defeat Sarah Ravencroft. The books was sucking her in and she was taking Ben Ravencroft with her. Then the burning branch fell on the book and that’s that.

Its pretty interesting that the Turkey wasn’t turned back to normal after the whole thing. I liked the reference to Wizards of Oz.

The ending was nice with the Hex Girls preforming their song Earth, Wind, Fire and Air with the gang in witch clothing.

This is one of my favorite Scooby movies of all time! I would love to have another film like this someday. The setting of Oakhaven was beautiful.

Ben Ravencroft was an incredible villain. It was such a shocking twist to have him be evil. Tim Curry played the role amazingly. The ending was super intense. The Witch's Ghost was a great villain, particularly the real version of her at the end of the film.

This is my favorite appearance of the Hex Girls to date. They're such incredible characters and I wish they would appear more.

Scooby Doo and The Legend of The Vampire:
Man, this was a really great movie. I liked the retro feel of Scooby Doo Where Are You. The gang went back to their original outfits. The background music is the same from Scooby Doo Where Are You. Shaggy and Scooby’s scuba diving outfits are the same from A Clue for Scooby Doo. I heard Shaggy said chocolate covered corn on the cob a reference to Jeepers it’s the Creeper.

The Scooby Doo Where Are Intro was down perfectly on the boat. The bats coming out of the top, Scooby gulping then running from the kelp monster, they’re walking pass the door it opens and the shake creature follows them, that green hand trying to get Daphnes head, Fred falling through that trap closet, the peg leg Captain coming at them they run away from the Peg Leg Captain, Shark Creature and Kelp Monster. That sea monster looked pretty cool. The managed to defeat them.

The Yowie Yahoo was an epic villain. He had really awesome powers. Seriously he produced thunder and lighting. Shoot fire balls, create strong winds. He also had a really cool design. The Wildwind Vampires were also pretty cool villains. There designs were really well done. Those red eyes watching from the bushes were creepy.

During the chase scene they’re were obvious scenes that can tell they weren’t real vampire that Shaggy and Scooby didn’t figure it out. Like, Dark Skull vampire ate that spaghetti with garlic powder or the Lightning Strikes vampire had a reflection in the house of mirror.

The running gag of Shaggy each time playing his guitar a string breaks.

It was cool seeing the Hex Girls again. I liked their new songs Get Away Yah and Who Do Voodoo. They were toned down in this movie and they got new outfits.

It was pretty cool that sun shining off Scooby’s dog tag destroyed the Yowie Yahoo.

The unmasking scene was pretty interesting. Russel and Two Skinny Dudes the Wildwind themselves. They really are alive and staged the whole disappearing act and kidnapped all the other bands so that they can win the contest and make a comeback.

The ending was great with gang going by their band name the Meddling Kids and performing Scooby Doo Where Are You accompanied with the Hex Girls. Velma has a good singing voice. I liked that Scooby was howling with the dingo dogs.

I liked how this felt brought us back to the tone of Where Are You, and brought back the original voice actors.

It goes without saying for me I liked both the Yowie Yahoo and the Wildwind Vampires given my username haha.

I loved getting to see the Hex Girls again. Friendly correction, actually "Getaway Yeah" wasn't a Hex Girls song. It was sung by a someone who sounds like them, Holland Greco, but it wasn't actually them. https://scoobydoo.fandom.com/wiki/Getaway_Yeah

This was a great movie and remains one of my favorites.

The Vampire Strikes Back:
I really enjoyed this episode. We see the Hex Girls yet again. I liked their new song Petrified Bride. I also liked their bride outfits. It was interesting to see them argue and temporarily brake up.

The setting of Fortescu Castle was creepy. The Vampire was a great and creepy villain. It was pretty mysterious that people were disappearing and bats would show up. Owen Decassle looks just like Vincent Van Ghoul. Wrenchfield was a creepy guy.

I thought it was cute and funny that Shaggy and Scooby actually thought that the bat was Fred after he disappeared.

I liked the twist that there are twin brothers Steve and Stu Fortescu, the mirror trick and that there was more than one vampire.

It was nice seeing J. J. Hakamto again. The Hex Girls doing a WNSD music video was cool.

"Petrified Bride" is one of my favorite Hex Girls songs. This was an amazing episode. I love episodes that have castle settings, and I always love vampires as villains, so this episode was a win-win for me haha. This vampire was an awesome villain. I liked the twist at the end too! And yeah, Fred Bat was cute :)

In Fear of The Phantom:
This was a pretty good episode. It was pretty cool seeing the Hex Girls again. Their outfits were different. They singed their songs, Im A Hex Girl and Who Do Voodoo. It was first for one of them (Thorn) to actually get hurt. Velma being a huge fan of the Hex Girls was a surprising change.

The Phantom was a pretty cool villain. He wasn’t just a regular phantom. He looked like a futuristic robot. He had a cool design. Him having electronic powers and those creepy rhymes were nice touches. I liked the chase scene in the tour bus.

Daniel Prezette as the phantom wasn’t really surprising. After seeing the Fantzee Pantz music video, I’m like wow I know who the culprit is. The Fantzee Pants video was good.

Daphne really shined in this episode she posed a Thorn in the effort to catch the Phantom. She got a makeover, took on the stage name Crush, and performed a new song with the Hex Girls called Trap of Love which was really good. Fred finally expressing his feelings for Daphne. The song really spoke to him. Him and Daphne made up at the end

Scooby not wanting to talk to Shaggy because of him go into to prom with Velma instead of watching the Vincent Van Ghoul marathon with him. I thought it was cute that he found a new best friend Harry, Shaggy’s dummie. It’s nice that they made up at the end. Velma looked a little sad though.

I enjoyed this episode too. I didn't like their new outfits quite as much as the old ones. Velma liking the Hex Girls was pretty interesting. The Phantom was a super cool villain! I wasn't surprised at all by the culprit though. Yeah, Daphne definitely shined in this episode. I liked her Crush persona and "Trap of Love" was good. I could have done without the Shaggy/Velma drama but otherwise this was a great episode.

Dance of the Undead:
This was a pretty wicked episode. The Rude Boy and Ska Tastic Zombies were pretty great and gruesome villains. It was so cool that they can turn people into dancing zombies by singing a song. I also like that they were riding on scooters.

We see the Hex Girls yet again in this episode. I liked that they went back to their original outfits. We hear an old song of theirs, Who Do Voodoo. They did a new song, The Good Bad Girls and their costumes were cool.

The band battle between the Hex Girls and the zombies was epic. It was cool that the zombies made that giant skull heads and the hex girls made giant bats. The zombies then made a giant skull head and it crashed the hex girls. Then with the help of Shaggy and Scooby playing with the hex girls they created that giant Scooby head which turned everybody back to normal and crashed into the zombies, defeating them.

The zombies are actually the band themselves and they did the whole thing just to be famous again. I liked that they dance to the police car.

It was also nice seeing Trinie Lee again and hearing her song. It was cool seeing the hex girls in modern clothing and that they sing the Planesperic Disk song. Scooby visiting Nova in the hospital was sweet. Nova just woke up and said Nibriu was coming.

This was a great episode! I liked Rude Boy and the Ska-Tastics as villains. They were quite creepy. The battle of the bands was amazing, and I liked that each band projected giant skulls and bats as well. That was funny seeing them dance to the police car lol. It was great to see the Hex Girls again. I liked that they were in their old outfits again, but I did also like seeing them in more modern clothes. That hospital scene was creepy with Nova waking up saying Nibiru was coming.

I really liked that this episode is similar to Legend of the Vampire. Both involve monsters versions of the band, people being kidnapped, the culprits turns out to the bands themselves, they staged whole death/disappearing act, their motives were to be famous again, they had band managers who were suspects, both feature the Hex Girls. Legend of the Vampire takes place in Australia. Rude Boy has an Australian accent.

I Put A Hex On You:
This was a good episode. It’s was heavenly focused on the The Hex Girls. The Hex Girls were great as always. I liked that they gave them catchphrases wicked and rock n roll. They made Thorn really a aggressive. I thought it was interesting that she has a tranquilizer gun.

I liked the plot of the cursed guitar changing the personality of anyone who plays it. The roadey went berserk. Thorn and Luna’s personalities changed. Dusk was afraid she would be next. Velma managed to change them back. Their new song Put A Curse On You was good.

The Ghost of Ester Moonkiller was a good villain. She would’ve been a better villain if she appeared more. That door gag scene was completely unnecessary. It was too long. Instead, it could’ve been a really good chase sequence like Wedding Witch of Waisnely Hall.

I liked that the referred back to Witches Ghost with the photo.

This was my favorite Guess Who episode. It felt like this episode focused on them more than a lot of the other ones did, which was really nice to see. I liked their new catchphrases too, and found Thorn having a tranquilizer gun amusing. The plot was really interesting. It was funny seeing Thorn and Luna be so out of character when they were cursed by the guitar. I enjoyed their new song as well. I agree the door gag scene was too long. The reference back to Witch's Ghost was fun! I really liked the villain too! Interesting, someone else mentioned to me that they didn't feel Ester appeared enough, but honestly I didn't mind.
