Fun Fact of the Week #411

Happy Monday! James is with us to provide today's fun fact, detailing Kevin Smith's odd history with the Scooby-Doo franchise.

In the 1990s, Kevin was approached by Time Warner to write a film for Scooby-Doo. However, his production partner, Scott Mosier, had no interest in writing for Scooby, so Kevin declined. This is despite Time Warner sending him lots of merch twice in attempt to persuade him to write for Scooby. This was said on the View Askew board a long time ago, but it was taken offline. The archived version of that source can be found here.

In 2001, he decided to feature a parody of the Scooby-Doo gang in his film, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Mark Hamill voices the Scooby-Doo like dog. There was a deleted scene, but it was removed for being too obscene (or should I say it was obscene lol).

In his extremely excitingly titled biography My Boring Ass Life, he makes several Scooby references, including how his friend Jason Mewes watched Scooby-Doo and bought a Scooby puzzle for his daughter, which was extremely hard for his wife and child to put together.

Scooby also was mentioned twice in his show, Comic Book Men. In the episode "Captain and the Clerk," he introduced his show by saying "the only one smart enough to keep Scooby away from Groot." In addition, in the episode "Bats Ahoy!," Kevin and his colleagues have a discussion about if Mystery Inc. were better detectives than Batman.

He and Jason Mewes also had a cameo in Rock and Roll Mystery, and hosted the Comic Con panel that July for the film. You can read an interview about it here, and you can watch their interview at the San Diego Comic Con panel in the YouTube video above.

Possibly because of all the Scooby references, Kevin and Marc Bernadin had an artwork made of them in which they look like Shaggy and Fred, respectively.

As you can see, Kevin Smith has quite a few more connections to Scooby than you'd expect! A big thanks again to James for researching all of this and finding these links.

The gif of Scooby blowing kisses comes to mind.

I'd like to make an amendment that I didn't actually see him say it on the View Askew board. Reading what you said makes me sound older than I am, as that was posted in 1997. I don't know when the board starting to basically become defunct. I read the news copied from onto another site, which I probably should've sent over. https://web.archive.org/web/20030203010247/http://corona.bc.ca/films/details/scoobyA.html

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood what you had told me. I fixed it in the post and added this link. Also, in looking at that source, I wasn't aware that there were rumors of Tim Burton writing the first live-action film!

I can't figure whether it's something notable point of trivia, because it's just rumor, but the idea that Tim Burton somehow got attached to this, is highly peculiar to learn.

Maybe that's why the first trailer is a Batman '89 parody trailer.

Even though Kevin said Turner, I kept thinking WB, and because of the problems with Superman Lives which was going to be directed by Tim Burton, but Superman Lives follows from the Turner bribes.

I think Superman Lives ultimately put a stop to Kevin ever wanting to write for Scooby-Doo.

I guess Superman was a greater tempting offer than Scooby-Doo.

But then you get Craig Titley who turned down Joe Dante's Fantastic Four in favour of Scooby-Doo. In fact, that's how I even found out about Joe Dante directing Fantastic Four.

And yet another interesting connection I can between Fantastic Four and Scooby-Doo, is that Raja Gosnell turned down Fantastic Four in favour of Scooby-Doo.

I'm done now. LOL.

I hadn't thought about the connection between the first trailer being a parody of Batman, but you could be right! I also wasn't aware Craig and Raja turned down Fantastic Four for Scooby-Doo. That's really interesting!

WWV, when you did that post about unmade Scooby projects, I think you left out how The Mystery Map DTV was actually the pilot (or retooled from an aborted pilot) of a whole puppet series. https://scoobydoo.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:TheAtomicLight/An_Interview_With..._Stephanie_D%27Abruzzo

I actually wasn't aware that it was a pilot, so thank you for pointing this out! That's really cool to learn. I just edited the post and added this.

won't you post about James Gunn's statement about a sequel to the 2002 movie?

I'm unsure of which statement you're talking about. Do you mean the one where he said the film was originally going to be rated R?

I think they're talking about this twitter thread with Lillard, Prinze and Gunn:

Did the What's New, Scooby-Doo? Halloween and Valentine specials air in prime-time like the Christmas special?

WWV, you once did that Simple Plan poll, but you left out the songs from the Gosnell movies. Was that intentional or not? I don't think it matters either way, I'm just watching both of these movies over a month, and being reminded of their other songs in those movies.

It wasn't intentional, no. I had forgotten they were in the film.
