While to my knowledge, it was not ever confirmed officially by Hanna-Barbera, the Ghost of Captain Cutler's haunting moan was supposedly heavily inspired from the September 8, 1957 episode of the The Stan Freberg Radio Show. The inspiration came from a joke sketch where Stan interviews the Abominable Snowman, but the only responses he receives from the snowman are haunting roars. You can take a listen to the Abominable Snowman here at 2:10, but to me, the snowman's roar bears a strong resemblance to Captain Cutler's moan.

I actually didn't either until recently, but I thought it was super cool that the inspirationCaptain Cutler's voice came from such a random place.

Agreed, it does sound very similar. Captain Cutler is absolutely an iconic sounding monster. Maybe second behind the Space Kook in my books
