Fun Fact of the Week #383

1/10/2022

From October 20, 1984 to May 31, 1985, an ABC network programming block named "Scary Scooby Funnies" rebroadcast episodes of The Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Show without the Richie Rich segments. An intro was created for this programming block, editing out the Richie Rich parts of the intro with scenes from episodes of The Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Show, including "Chinese Food Factory," "Scooby's Desert Dilemma," "A Fit Night Out for Bats," "Stow-Aways," "Swamp Witch," and "Mummy's the Word." You can watch this intro above.

Yeah, all this constant renaming and weird unclear separations of Scooby shows for about a decade there is frustrating to understand and pin down lol, it can be a mess trying to decypher what are all the actual Scooby series and their names.

Maybe that's the real reason for that third season of the Where are You show...

@John Locke I'm not quite sure I understand your comment (though it has been a very long day so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm just not processing it correctly lol). Why do you think that?

TSDS season 3 was at first broadcast as a revival/season 3 of WAY, but midway through the airing of that season they rebranded it to Scooby's All Stars I believe. And then later on it was rebranded again under the new umbrella show of 76-78 called The Scooby-Doo Show. Each of the 3 TSDS seasons originally aired with different titles (and in the case of season 3 two different titles) and were then compiled as one show after quite a while. I think that's what John was talking about.

Just joking that with all the renaming and combining and reformatting maybe they actually forgot this was the third season of "the Scooby Doo Show" and not the 3rd season of WAY

@Becker Okay, yep, I got that, I just didn't get his joke at first.

@John Locke Oh, gotcha haha. Also, it's crazy you both commented within seconds of each other!

It is really weird and frustrating. This wasn't an actual Scooby series though, as it was all just re-airings of the Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Show, under a different name since they didn't air it with the Richie Rich parts.

Yeah, but it was once again a random rebranding of a Scooby show/season. There's a chance the name could've stuck like in other cases and 80-82 could've now been known as Scary Scooby Funnies instead of a second series called Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo (1980-1982). Idk which I would've preferred, cuz Scary Scooby Funnies is a pretty stupid name, but at least it would mean not having two different shows called Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo in the franchise, one after another might I add.

Oh I see what you're saying. I think I personally prefer the Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Show as the name, but even Scooby and Scrappy-Doo is better than Scary Scooby Funnies. I wonder what made certain rebrand names stick, whereas others didn't. For example, The Richie Rich / Scooby-Doo Show and The Scooby & Scrappy-Doo Puppy Hour seem to have stuck, but I rarely hear anyone call that first season of The Scooby-Doo Show "The Scooby-Doo / Dynomutt Hour" except when they're referring to the DVD.

Tbf, everyone seems to just call 80-82 the "Scrappy Shorts", and it's stuck more than anything in recent times lol

That's a very good point lol.

@Becker I completely agree that the name is absolutely stupid, but it would be very convenient in terms of talking about series. Especially for me who really loves the first season, and doesn’t care much for the shorts for the most part. Like you said, we can just call the shorts the shorts, but it would make things easier to clarify regarding the first season lol

I don’t know why but this video brought be so much joy. It felt so nostalgic and happy. I wasn’t even born when that video came out but it made me remember my childhood and I got a bit teary eyed. Sorry if this is random or weird but just wanted to share that. Thanks for all you do.

I have seen this before, but as others have said, yet another thing to make this era of Scooby Doo confusing and hard to follow

There's also Scooby's Mystery Funhouse, which makes it even more confusing. According to Wikipedia, that package show was a combination of the 1980-1982 Scrappy shorts and The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show / The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries. However, it's grouped in segments of three, some of them including two eleven minute episodes and a seven minute one, which doesn't make sense as it wouldn't leave time for commercials. So the episode listing on Wikipedia is definitely wrong, but I don't know if that means the span of episodes/series used in Scooby's Mystery Funhouse is also wrong. It's very confusing lol.

Ah yes, Scooby's Mystery Funhouse (trash name again), one of the most confusing examples of such Scooby rebranding. It was back in 85-86, so right at the end of that straight decade of constant jumbling of names. Glad this one didn't stick.

There is definitely some good quality in the Scrappy era but these are some reasons that the era was still just a mess in terms of marketing

I'm glad it didn't stick either. Why is it called "funhouse?" lol Other than "Scooby's Fun Zone," I can't even think of any other episodes in that era that included funhouses haha.

Mystery Incorporated's coming to YouTube this Friday

Thanks for this blast from the past! For some reason, the name "Scary Scooby Funnies" stuck in my brain after the show went off the air, and when I first came online 20+ years ago, I was confused as to why I couldn't find references to it or information about it. A list of episodes and segments is particularly hard to come by. It took me quite a while before I came across someone who explained that it was a compilation of reruns, hence why so little attention has been paid to it.

I'm glad that someone has archived the opening on YouTube, since it's unique animation that would be otherwise lost. I still wish that some animation enthusiast at Warner Home Video or Warner Archive would throw bits like that opening (and the "Scooby's Mystery Funhouse" opening) onto a DVD as a special feature or something.

I agree with Becker that it's kind of a shame that the naming wasn't continued in reruns either. As has been noted, neither that nor "Funhouse" are spectacular names, but they make more sense than grouping the Scrappy shorts with the first season of half-hour mystery-solving episodes involving the whole Mystery Inc. gang and a different-sounding Scrappy.

Not that mentioning Richie Rich (if he isn't included in the reruns) makes much sense either.

Mind you, none of this keeps me up at night or anything. There's no perfect solution. It's just kind of this weird footnote in Scooby history, and it's fun to think about what might have been.

Thanks again for sharing!

It is a really strange little piece of Scooby history. I think there might be a list of episodes on Wikipedia for the series, but I'm not sure how accurate it is since anyone could edit it.

I wish they would have continued the naming in reruns too! The "Funhouse" name as always been so odd to me...like why did they come up with "Funhouse" when that has nothing to do with the series? lol

Actually, I'm pretty sure I've read that the programming block was renamed 'Scary Scooby Funnies' because it was the first time that the Scrappy shorts aired in syndication without the Richie Rich (and Puppy Hour) episodes. I don't remember where I saw that, but I feel like I have.

I agree that it's cool someone archived the opening on YouTube, and it's fun to think about what this could have been :)

I know it's been a couple of weeks, but I had to go back and check. Wikipedia, the Scooby Wiki, and IMDB all have episode listings for "Scooby's Mystery Funhouse"...but none of them have anything for "Scary Scooby Funnies"! So weird. It really is like a show that just doesn't exist! LOL

That's super strange! It must be the "lost" Scooby show then haha.
