2020 Year In Review

Scooby aside, I think most of us can agree this has been a pretty crappy year with the pandemic. With the pandemic, my typical year-end list isn't going to be as long as it usually is, since not as much content could be put out. This year, let's break down the top 7 things have happened within the Scooby-Doo franchise.
Picture
7. Playmobil Scooby-Doo
This year, Playmobil released 9 new Scooby-Doo sets and bunch of figures, including figures of all the gang and 12 villain figures. While I haven't personally purchased these, I'm really glad that they've been so popular!
Picture
6. Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? Comics
While I haven't really been keeping up-to-date with these as much due to the overuse of stock art, there were five new issues of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? comics released this year (#103-#107). This is considerably less than normal, due to the pandemic delaying several of the comics.
Picture
5. Funko Pops
A bunch of new Funko Pop! figures were released this year as collectibles, including ones from the movie SCOOB! I really like these; they're so cute!
Picture
4. Happy Halloween, Scooby-Doo!
Happy Halloween, Scooby-Doo! was released on DVD at Wal-Mart on September 15, and everywhere else (including digital platforms) on October 6. Despite this being yet another crossover film, I thought this was one of the best DTVs we've gotten in years. It had a very unique vibe to it and truly felt like a Halloween movie. As I said in my review of the film, it felt like SDMI and Be Cool Scooby-Doo had a baby and this was the result. It truly took the best elements of both series and combined them into one great movie.
Picture
3. Scooby-Doo & Guess Who: 28 New Episodes
Compared to other years where we haven't gotten much Scooby content at all, we were pretty blessed when it came to new episodes of Guess Who this year. 28 new episodes of Guess Who aired in 2020. The second half of season 1 aired between February and May in most countries, and we finally got it in the US on July 2, 2020. On October 1, Boomerang surprised us all for Scoobtober and posted the first 13 episodes of season 2. On November 13, to honor Alex Trebek after his sudden death, Boomerang posted a fourteenth season 2 episode, "Total Jeopardy!" featuring Trebek as a guest star. Finally, the UK and Poland also aired "Lost Soles of Jungle River!" featuring Jason Sudeikis, which many of us have gotten to see.
Picture
2. Daphne & Velma Novels
I know these novels get a lot of hate from fans because Scooby can't talk in them, or people think it's somehow connected to the Daphne & Velma movie (which it's not), but these novels have been amazing in my opinion. We got the first two of them this year (one on March 3 and the other on July 7), with a third already announced for release next year. These novels follow Daphne and Velma trying to solve mysteries in the town of Crystal Cove, and feature tons of fun references to prior Scooby content. These novels have a more mature tone than the series, and are marketed towards young adults rather than the typical G-rated audience of the franchise. If you enjoy reading, I highly recommend these books and I feel like it's exactly what those of us who have wanted a more mature take on Scooby have been looking for. I can't wait for #3 next year!

1. SCOOB!
Sadly, this movie got a lot of hate. Fans were pretty devastated when it was announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the theatrical release of the film on May 15 was cancelled. However, the film was not held back, and was turned into a direct-to-video film so it could still release as planned on May 15. I loved SCOOB! personally and found it to be a very sweet, entertaining origin story for the gang. Though it didn't really have the gang chasing monsters, I liked the direction they took it in. I thought all the voice actors did a very good job as well. This was a very feel-good movie, and it was fun to finally watch what we had been hearing about since August 2013!

Looking ahead to 2021, I'm hoping it will be a better year in general as we all are, but I'm hoping it will be especially good for Scooby-Doo content. Here are a couple things I'm looking forward to in the upcoming year:

1. Scooby-Doo DTVs: Sword and the Scoob & Courage the Cowardly Dog Crossover
I can't wait to see these two DTVs, especially the rumored Courage crossover! I know a lot of people are worried about it staying true to the tone of Courage, so I hope they've learned their lesson from Return to Zombie Island and Curse of the 13th Ghost. The Sword and the Scoob seems like it will be a lot of fun as well, especially since we'll get to learn a bit more about Shaggy's relatives.

2. Scooby-Doo and the Lost City of Gold
While this play was supposed to happen this year, very few shows were able to happen due to COVID-19. I feel bad for the actors as I'm sure they all worked super hard on this, so I'm really hoping they'll be able to make up the majority of those shows that were cancelled!

3. The Final 11 Guess Who Episodes
It's hard to believe we're already down to the final 11 episodes of Guess Who. I'm really excited to see the rest of these and I hope they're as good as many of the recent episodes have been! So far, we know 7 of the 11 guest stars - Dynomutt & Blue Falcon, Lucy Liu, Sean Astin, Jessica Biel, KISS, Cher and the voice actors themselves. We also know a football episode will happen sometime in these 11 episodes.

I hope everyone has a wonderful start to 2021, and let's all hope it's a better year than 2020 has been!

Happy Halloween was a bit better than Scoob, I'd say. The second season of Guess Who has been better than the first, but it's still one of the lesser shows.

Do you think next year we'll get rumors or even announcements about what the next Scooby show will be? Guess Who will obviously end in 2021, and a new series could start in 2022. If anything, what do you think it would be?

I think a lot of people feel that way. I just really enjoyed SCOOB! and thought it was a great theatrical (in spirit) movie.

It's definitely possible we'd get an announcement, though I believe Guess Who was rumored almost a full year before we heard for sure that was the next series. I think if we get the next 11 episodes of Guess Who in the first half of the year, then yes, we will get an announcement for the next series.

Nice list. My favorite was Happy Halloween scooby doo. I also enjoyed scoob and guess who.

I'm looking forward for Sword and the scoob cause it isn't a crossover(well I know it has king Arthur and stuff but there are no celebs etc). I also would like to see the Kiss and Sean Austin episodes as well. I have a bad feeling about the courage film I hope I'm wrong

Hopefuly we will get rid of covid in 2021 and have a great scooby year

Merry Christmas and happy new year everyone

I'm glad there are no celebs in Sword and the Scoob too. I like crossovers, but as I've said before, it gets a little much sometimes when they're doing it in Guess Who and all the movies. I'm not super confident about Courage, but I'm remaining optimistic and I'm still excited for it!

Yes this year has indeed been crazy because of COVID. I just hope that in 2021, things will go back to normal and people will take things seriously when it come to health and staying clean. 2021 will be awesome for Scooby doo. With the sword and the scoob, the second half of season 2 of guess who and the Scooby/Courage crossover. I’m just wondering when they will release titles for Scooby doo and guess who or the trailer at least. I was hoping we get it in December if not probably January.

I really hope so too, both with COVID and that 2021 will be a great year for Scooby. I would be very surprised if we got all 11 episodes yet this year, but that would be super amazing if we somehow did! Do you think there will be a trailer for the last Guess Who episodes? I don't think there has been a trailer for any of the most recent new groups of episodes.

I saw a trailer for the second half of season one episodes on YouTube. The episodes that premiered in May. I guess it was more of a promo. I predict that we will see the titles of these second half of season 2 episodes in January then they’ll premiere in February. Like how the first half of season 2 revealed the guest stars and the titles then they premiered in October.

Oh wow, I never saw that promo. I’d say that’s a pretty good prediction! I’m hoping it won’t be such a long gap again like in between the first and second halves of season one (September 2019-July 2020).

I didn’t really like SCOOB! much, although it is a mildly fun watch. I think what sinks it for me is its underwritten and try-hard sappy ending and pop culture jokes that aren’t very clever and dominate most of the film. The animation and especially the voice acting, are very underrated however. The hate was undeserved entirely, and I personally don’t feel that the current gang should have been upset about the change, especially after Matthew Lillard had stated in an interview a few years ago that he knew he wasn’t attached to the project. And voice actor Bob Bergen even threatened the movie’s voice cast on Twitter with “bad karma” as if they deserved it and compared it to the much worse and completely different scenario of Janet Waldo in The Jetsons Movie.

For me, I’d say Daphne & Velma books are definitely a close second for best Scooby content this year because of how extremely well-written and engaging they are! And in first place I’d put Happy Halloween for not only being a very good Scooby movie, but for actually uniting most of the fandom after SCOOB!, Curse of the 13th Ghost, and Return to Zombie Island had kind of split it up.

Yeah I agree the hate for this movie is too much it's fine if people don't like this movie but some people out right hate as if it is going to effect the dtv movies or series in any way or as if it destroyed the franchise or destroyed their child hoods or something and I'm just like come on why do you hate this scooby doo content is still coming it's not like it's the finale of the frafranchise or anything like that and can they also give the voice actors a break they are doing the best they can.

I agree that some of the pop culture references were quite dated and won’t age well, but that didn’t bother me too much I guess. I didn’t find it to be underwritten though. It really bothers me that people are so critical of the voice acting, especially where some people in the fandom were freaking out about the new voice actors permanently replacing the old ones, which obviously was a rumor and not true.

I’m glad to see some love for the Daphne & Velma novels! I found them to be amazing. I really like your point about Happy Halloween uniting the fandom though. I think everyone pretty much loved the film and you’re absolutely right.

The reason why so many people dislike Scoob so much is because they saw it as superhero movie instead of an actual mystery. People also feel it was more focused shaggy and Scooby. I thought the movie was good. I thought the voice actors did a great job. I like shaggy and Scooby’s origin in that movie reminds me of their origin in Mystery Begins. I was weird seeing Blue Falcon as the goofy one and Dynomutt as the serious one. Dick Dastardly was pretty cool though. The guys that played him did an excellent job. Cerberus was pretty cool to. In the end I say the movie was good but could have been better.

I loved the guess who episodes and the film mostly. The thing is, last year there was no pandemic and it was way worse. Scooby Doo turned 50 and they showed up with 2 of the most disappointing films of this franchise. Return to Zombie Island is so stupid as it ruins the first film completely. The episodes of guess who from last year were not bad but nothing too great.

But season 2 had one terrible thing. Too much copying. In "A Hot Dog Dog" they used the same actor as the one in episode 9, In the caveman episode, they copied the 2 characters that were also in episode 9 as surfers and they copied the cave man. They also copied the yeti

I didn't mind that just because I considered it as more "inspired by" rather than copying, but I did not like "The Hot Dog Dog!" because it was kinda bland and didn't feel like the guest star had a purpose.

Even though this year was..... something....
I enjoyed the Scooby Movies and episodes this year.

I loved SCOOB even though it wasn't your typical Scooby formulaic movie. I even liked the voice actors. Going by how the characters were designed and looked in this movie, I think the voice actors fit them fine. Will Forte as Shaggy kinda fit this Shaggy though it took some getting used to. I honestly hope there's a sequel.

Happy Halloween Scooby Doo was the best DTV movie we had in a while. Like you said, It was a blend of Mystery Incorporated and Be Cool Scooby Doo, which is something I hope the future movies keep.

I doubt anymore more Scooby Shows, will be made after guess who Finishes. the thing to bear in mind is that cable tv is dying. in my country, the only Scooby-doo shows they air anymore on tv anymore are be cool, guess who. in addition to this they have stopped airing any tv-movies of Scooby, this has going for some time now and I higly doubt things will improve here. also canada is doing a similar thing they only air scooby in the weekends there. Big companies like Disney, do not care for cable anymore either.and Disney did shutdown some of their cable channels in the past. I suspect cable cartoon network and boomerang will also get shutdown some time in the future also. and since we know those channels are the primary channels, to air scooby and well after they are gone they will simply be no channels left to air scooby anymore.Pay-TV is on the decline everywhere. Only the old have the kind of income to waste on Pay-TV services, and even then some are moving with the "youngins" to streaming anyway.
still in this particular case maybe it is for the best. when it comes tv-shows I think the Scooby-Doo franchise has been explored and taken in every possible way. and it deserves a long long rest for the time being anyway. with respect to everyone on this site.

That's just not gonna happen, man. They're definitely still gonna make Scooby shows. And there's many reasons why you shouldn't doubt that:

1) Doesn't matter if cable TV is dying, you've got streaming taking its place. The world's evolving and everyone should accept that and change with it. Almost all shows nowadays go (at least first) to streaming anyway. Look at the Animaniacs revival show which premiered last month on Hulu (and it's likely it'll move to HBO Max when season 2 will come out). You've got Looney Tunes Cartoons premiering on HBO Max since it's been launched this year and it's doing very well. And they're doing a Tiny Toons revival, Tiny Toons Looniversity, as well, in the next couple of years, for HBO Max. You've got the show Tom and Jerry in the Big City next year on that platform too. They're even doing a new show with the classic Hanna Barbera characters, like Yogi Bear, Boo Boo Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Captain Caveman, Quick Draw McGraw, Snagglepuss, Magilla Gorilla, Dixie and Pixie, Jabberjaw, Top Cat etc, called Jellystone, for HBO Max in 2021. And let's not even start with Disney+, CBS All Access, Netflix etc, including live action, not just animation. For Scooby, you have HBO Max (owned by WB) as the obvious place for future Scooby-Doo content, considering they've already done/they're about to do it with a lot of other properties they own.

2) When you make Scoob!, a movie intended to start a cinematic universe, to bring even more fans to Scooby-Doo, and that was going to theaters (and still is in many parts of the world), there's no way you're gonna cancel any plans for future shows within the franchise just one year later. That would make no sense business-wise and fan-wise. It goes against your goal. Scooby-Doo has only been getting bigger and bigger for almost the entire time since 1969.

3) Also, let's not forget that Guess Who in itself is a streaming-first show, on the Boomerang streaming service. It only goes to cable afterwards. So this franchise has already left cable TV as the main platform and adapted to the new generation, with the first step being Guess Who (and it's not the only step for sure). Actually, they were already doing this with the later episodes of Be Cool, so Guess Who is not even the first step technically. Boomerang will get absorbed by HBO Max fairly soon and the new series will obviously premiere there. There's no reason for Scooby to not continue on this more successful path that they're already treading on. That would be just franchise suicide when you were literally trying to make it bigger than ever with Scoob! and other crossovers (movies, series, specials) and all that.

WB knows and realizes all this, they don't need someone to explain it to them, they'll keep making Scooby-Doo movies and shows. It's kinda quite obvious.

12/25/2020 08:24:31 am

I don't think a cinematic universe, wil happen at this stage the thing to keep in mind is that many people hated Scoob and it had lots of mixed reviews.

yes many animated tv-shows do go to streaming, but not all of them fo example season 4 of The Tom and Jerry Show (2014), season 3 of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, Yabba-Dabba Dinosaurs, and the remaining episodes of Care Bears: Unlock the Magic never made it to streaming.
and those shows I mentioned did air on cable tv on boomerang and in the uk about a year ago.I think cable tv does still matter since the Animaniacs revival show, Looney Tunes Cartoons did air on cable tv in canada on teletoon thus that proves cable is far from dead.
the thing to bear in mind is that guess who, was advertised as as a exclusive series for the Boomerang's SVOD service, and yet despite this they did air the series on cable.in fact many episodes of it first aired on cable before they went to streaming.

also on a different note I think tv ratings also matter. the way I heard it was that the DuckTales reboot series got cancelled was due to poor tv ratings on tv. it didn't get many views on streaming either.I think the tv ratings did matter in this case since that series was mainly intended for cable and not streaming.
when it comes to tv-shows I think Scooby-Doo, has always had a large range of audience for cable tv and not streaming. many kids I know prefer to watch Scooby-doo, through cable and not streaming.so it is rather unfortunate that countries like poland. germany, and canada hardly air scooby anymore.
yes cable tv is dying but I honestly don't think it will ever be completely dead. besides streaming platforms often remove content from their sites

Yes Scooby is still popular, but they are milking Scooby to death with making one after another show. I think They need to take their time and make good stories.also I really hated movies like, return to zombie island and curse of the 13th ghost. I don't think those movies were good at all, and I don't think those are what Scooby-Doo is truly about.

Sometimes they drop the ball with movies, but those don't really have to do with the shows. More often than not, they succeed with shows, they're usually good. And the only time we haven't really had a "Scooby show after another" was in 1991-2002. Otherwise, a new Scooby show in less than 3 years after the previous one ended, since its inception in 1969. Considering they've been coming up with new spins on almost every new Scooby (both Hanna Barbera and Warner Bros), I don't think they've done everyone possible with the franchise yet. Sure, we want them to be good, but that doesn't mean we have to wait 10 years for someone to crack the code to a perfect Scooby-Doo series. Sure, Guess Who has been underwhelming for a good amount of fans, but it's not anywhere near the level of Get a Clue, which is really hated. Yet they bounced back with Mystery Incorporated, a fan favorite, just 2 years after Get a Clue ended. To be fair to Get a Clue I guess, it was unlike anything else in this 51 year old franchise, so it's got that going for it. If WB does something unlike anything else in this franchise that is not baffling and absolutely obliterated by the fan base, it would be cool (no pun intended).

Yeah but those were misguided sequels and the other announced dtv movies aren't and how about happy halloween scooby doo that was pretty good and scooby doo was always a cash cow even hannah barbara milked scooby doo they even made ripoffs to try and recapture the same success and what do you mean by thats not scooby doo is about? isn't a part of scooby doo is disproving the supernatural these sequels failed because they tryed doing that and it didn't work because they were sequels to movies/series that had supernatural elements in them and just because a franchise is being milked doesn't mean that everything they make sucks with a franchise like scooby doo they can do loads of things with it ending it will make you wonder what they could have done with it but the fact that the franchise has be around for a long time shows how much staying power it has and even if a concept is a missed opitunity they have time to use it to it's full potential

I am not saying the fans should wait the next 10 years for the next show. when I said They need to take their time and make good stories.I was thinking about something like 2-3 years.I have encountered some people who are simply somewhat tired of Scooby-Doo by now. some have reacted this way "so they made another new Scooby-Doo movie or show, so what they have made so many of them that by now I have lost track by now, and I don't really care anymore especially I prefer the older movies anyway and I only watch the older shows and don't care for the new shows or movies at all."

milking a franchise is always good thing, but I am worried that WB is going a bit too far with it. maybe this is part of the reason why in some countries, they hardly air scooby anymore on cable. maybe they grew tired of airing scooby despite the fact they know that it is a popular franchise.in my youth I watched lots of of Scooby-Doo, but I have seen the shows and movies, so many times that by now I am simply somewhat tired of them by now. and this why I don't care to watch them that much anymore. I think some people feel similar to what I have said. which is why I think this franchise needs a rest for time being.

To be fair, Hanna Barbera was milking Scooby Doo as much as Warner Bros, except the amount of movies for obvious reasons. I think what people are tired of more than anything is the crossover side of things. Since 2014 most movies have been crossovers with real people, fictional characters, even companies like Lego could be classified. And then half the movies that are not crossovers are, well, the 2019 kind of stuff, which is even worse. Then to multiply all of this crossover stuff by 20, we get a modern incarnation of The New Scooby-Doo Movies, which in itself is crossover galore. The good part is that we'll get rid of a lot of this crossover fatigue when Guess Who ends, cuz there's no way the next Scooby series will be Guess Who 2.0. That's also kinda why I hope we'll get another Scooby show soon.

when it comes to be cool, I have come across a lot of people who have mixed feelings towards that show. one of the things which bothered me the most, was that Daphne had personalitie in the earlier versions, but in this one her trait is to be retarded. in honesty I found Daphne to be the worst character in Be Cool. She's autistic in this series, having a new obsession every episode.
She reminded me of Francine from American Dad. I have come across some people who simply refused to watch that show due to that reason. some of them simply coudn't stand the fact that they made her dumb in it for no real reason. also I feel like Be Cool failed on the merit of the art style alone, as well as just poor marketing. According to the creator, he also didn't want his show to look like that but aparently the studio execs pushed it in that direction. Be Cool Scooby-Doo would literally have been perfect if it just had the visuals of a normal Scooby-Doo series.

when it comes to Guess who, I wish that show had been about the Scooby Gang teaming up with other Hanna-Barbera mystery teams every episode instead. I love the Scooby-Doo Team-Up comics.

From what I know, the art style of Be Cool wasn't pushed by the studio. Jon Colton Barry (the creator of Be Cool) said it was a deliberate choice. Here's a couple of threads on ScoobyAddicts that expand upon this matter:

https://scoobyaddicts.proboards.com/thread/4698/hand-puppets-art-style-read

https://scoobyaddicts.proboards.com/thread/4879/characters-background-art-read

There's other threads that expand on this matter on the Be Cool Scooby-Doo sub-board on the site. The user by the name of jcb is legitimately the creator of the show. Zac Moncrief and Tom Konkle, who have posted on other threads there, also worked on the show.

I'd also add to this that JCB has said the intent was to make Daphne unique and quirky, and not to imply she had a disability. There's also no need to equate having a mental disability with being stupid, as that's simply not true and comes across a bit offensive.

I didn't wanna touch on that so that we don't potentially get into some bad places. But yeah, being quirky and ecstatic doesn't mean you're retarded or autistic. Not assuming you meant it with malignancy, but you really didn't choose your words well, Whackman.

Ok, to get back to my point about the creator himself deciding to give Be Cool the art style it ended up with and saying that and other things on ScoobyAddicts and other places; where did you hear him say otherwise, Whackman?

I apologise about my previous words about Daphne I was a bit harsh about that sorry about that. I should have chosen a different type of words all things considered. anyway I am a old type scooby-doo fan myself I am about 48 years old by the way.

Do you all think 2021 will have just as much content movie and series wise?

Series-wise we'll surely just get the last 11-12 episodes of Guess Who. A new show would come at earliest in 2022.
Movie-wise, we'll surely get 2, just like almost every year since 2010. They'll be The Sword and the Scoob, feb 23rd, and then the Scooby-Doo and Courage the Cowardly Dog movie in the second half of the year.

I would agree. We'll probably just get the last 11-12 episodes of Guess Who, and it's unlikely we'd get a second series in the same year. I think Becker's spot on about the movies.

I read a comment which a user posted on 4chan, in which he said the creator, didn't want be cool to look that way. but now that I think about it, I think I should take what he said with a Grain of salt.
you see the thing is he did not explain, nor provide a credible source to back up what he said. since this is the case, I don't think we should dwell upon this.

It's not necessarily just Hollywood critics, I've seen some fans who hate it too. It's a shame how much hate SCOOB! gets.

At least the first two live-action SD films did pretty well in the box office,
But SCOOB! only made ($24.9 million) in it. Can you beleave it?

I think SCOOB! really struggled financially because of the pandemic. It would have done a lot better if it could have been released in theaters.

They are not crazy for not liking a movie... calm tf down dude, what's wrong

the critics and fans are not crazy. in my opinion they are right SCOOB was not at good movie, first of all I really do think they should have gone with different voice actors, also I think the storyline was rather absurd in this case, and they should gone with whole a different story. on a different note I would like to point out that it does not really matter how much popular the Scooby-Doo franchise is. since every franchise does come to a end sooner or later,The flintstones, popeye are good examples of this.

for example many people do not care, or wish to watch new episodes of shows like Tom and Jerry. in fact I am fairly certain that many of them are tired with them by now. many people think that the upcoming Tom and Jerry movie would be a decent way to end that franchise, since they feel it has served it's purpose and I for one agree with them completely. Looney Tunes Cartoons is also not doing that well as some people think. the series launched in may last year ago On HBO Max, and yet it was only after a period of seven months that new episodes were added there. just wanted to point this out I know the orginal Looney Tunes shorts, didn't have that much firearms in them. But I really do think that WB, did the wrong by banning them in the new series, A long time ago when nobody thought about wether a gun would be appropriate in today’s society. The weapon of choice supported either the gag or the setup of the cartoon. The fact that the show runners are saying they decided to make guns an uncrossable line is disrespectful to the originals, which defeats the whole purpose of this show. and since it defeats the whole purpose of the show, then the only sane thing which should have been done was to end the series then. and thus marked the end of The End of Looney Tunes franchise when it comes to shows.

also after guess who finishes, I for one feel the next series, should have about 13 or 10 episodes for each seasons (about 2 seasons ). instead of 52 episodes like we have been having getting the last several years. otherwise if WB keeps making 52 episodes for each new series, then I doubt they will be anything to explore in The Scooby-doo Franchise, when it comes to shows in the next 2-3 years at the most.

"No one asked you!"... Says the guy who earlier said "Well if you ask me...", when he was not asked. And then only went on to ramble nonsense, insult others and make idiotic and groundless statements.

Shut up... you are not right for liking Scoob and you can't prove Scoob is a good movie and what you are saying is not fact. And anyone who doesn't like Scoob is NOT wrong or "plain crazy", instead it's more like you are making yourself look like that with your dumb, mean and factually not correct comments. Grow up and stop being a **** just cuz people don't agree with you.
