Weekly Poll #223

Thanks to Shadowscooby for suggesting this week's poll idea! I included "Attack of the Headless Horror" since the last 7 minutes of the episode took place in the hospital with Rick, even though the hospital wasn't the setting for the majority of the episode.

Although "Giant Problems" did win last week's Ireland poll with 31 votes, it wasn't as much of a clean sweep for that option as you might expect from the comment section. "Scooby's Luck of the Irish" was decently close behind with 19 votes, while "The Grand Canyon and Ireland" got 7 votes, putting it in last place.

6. Scrappy's Birthday - one of the worst Scrappy shorts imo. Very surprising that Scrappy could cause all this trouble considering he'd only been born for 5 minutes lol.

5. Attack of the Headless Horror - quality-wise this would be #3, but this isn't one that comes to mind as a hospital episode for me at all, so I'll put this here.

4. American Goth - I liked Shaggy and Amelia's romance, but not the strongest Be Cool episode imo.

3. The Horrible Haunted Hospital of Dr. Phineas Phrag! - this was among the stronger Guess Who episodes. I thought Kristen was a great guest star here and I enjoyed this one.

2. There Wolf - really solid Be Cool episode, one of my faves. Love the villain!

1. The Harum Scarum Sanatarium - Easy #1 pick. Such a classic that's amongst my favorite episodes of all time.

"When the Cicada Calls" would be between "Attack of the Headless Horror" and "Scrappy's Birthday." It's a good episode but it doesn't come to mind as a hospital setting for me.

Here is My Rankings. I haven't seen American Goth.
5) Attack of the Headless Horror - It's a mystery incorporated episode.
4) The Harum Scarum Sanitarium - The guy that works at the hospital is great. I like Cuddles and Schnookums. Fred really looks under the wrong part of the sheet like a perv. Daphne says Scooby is an excellent dancer as they dance. Besides these elements, I found the episode to be fairly lacking but it's fine
3) There Wolf - Reminds me aesthetically of American Werewolf in London actually.
2) The horrible Haunted Hospital - Great guest star. She is Kooky and has vocal qualities similar to Kate Miccuci.
1) Scrappy's Birthday - Nice little origin story that actually starts from the beginning. Cements Scrappy's status as part of the group and lets us see how he has changed since birth and how he is the same. Also adds an extra element of danger with Shaggy and Scooby actually requiring casts and hospitalization. Acts in a way to ensure Scrappy's continued involvement in their adventures much like in A Fit Night Out for Bats. Also, the later episode Scooby Goo mirrors this one concerning the dynamic. Shaggy and Scooby become babies and Scrappy has to take care of them. They have an adventure as babies, then mature in some way, and then continue on their adventures together despite the hassle caused by their prior immaturity.

Yeah, Kristen's voice reminded me of Kate Micucci quite a bit too.

6. Scrappy’s Birthday- Atrocious

5. The Horrible Haunted Hospital of Dr. Phineas Phrag!- I mean, I guess a Guess Who episode not being last in my ranking is something at least

4. Attack of the Headless Horror- Good episode, doesn’t come to mind quite as much

3. American Goth- This one was solid if unspectacular the best I remember

2. There Wolf- Pretty easy number 2 here. This is a really good Be Cool episode and a favorite of mine from that series

1. Harum Scarum Sanitarium- Even easier number one. This episode crushes the competition here like an anvil falling on a dozen eggs. This thrashing is like the 90s Bulls playing against your local high school basketball team, or in the case of Scrappy’s Birthday, playing against the local elementary school level little league team. This is one of the all time great episodes of the franchise. Truly terrifying for a Scooby Doo episode

When the Cicada Calls is just ahead of Headless Horror. Neither come to mind for me but I rank WTCC higher in general

If I was ranking in terms of quality I might actually put Headless Horror just ahead of When the Cicada Calls. I thought the plot was particularly unique in Headless Horror and the monster was amongst my favorite designs of the season.

I like the Headless Horror episode but When the Cicada Calls gets high marks from me for being a genuinely scary episode to me. The scenes where the Destroido employees are almost horror-esque. I’d probably put Cicada as one of my higher ranking season 1 episodes

BTW, maybe this has already been done before, but has there been a poll of episodes/movies with headless villains? Headless Specter, Headless Horseman (There’s multiple of them at that), Headless Skateboarder, Headless Horror, Headless Snowman just off the top of my head

I would say "When the Cicada Calls" is around the midway point of my rankings for SDMI. I do like the horror aspect but it doesn't come as mind as a favorite to me.

We did a headless horseman poll way back in 2021 (https://scoobysnax1.weebly.com/blog/weekly-poll-99), but a headless villain poll hasn't been done! Thanks for the suggestion! :)

There is also The Spooky Fog with Headless Horsemen. They obviously aren't main villains so it makes sense that it was left off though

That poll idea definitely intrigues me because I feel like Haunted House Hang Up and Headless Horseman of Halloween would be a clash of heavyweight Titans. I assume you'd go with the former but that would be a HARD choice for me, both are among my very, very favorites. And I realize I say that often, but these are two serious top ten of all time contenders for me this time lol

Even though I like the headless horsemen in "The Spooky Fog," I'd exclude the episode since they only show up for less than 10 seconds. I do really like their designs though, and have a lot of nostalgia over the New Scooby-Doo Movies episodes with multiple villains, so it's a bummer they have to be excluded lol. I actually have thought about doing a poll series where people would vote for their favorite villain in episodes of The New Scooby-Doo Movies that had a bunch of different villains that only appear once (so "Sandy Duncan's Jekyll and Hydes," "The Spooky Fog," "The Mystery of Haunted Island," "The Exterminator" and "The Haunted Carnival"), and then we'd match up the winners of each of those five polls in one final round. I'm not sure if people would have a strong enough opinion on any of those villains to do that though.

Yeah, I'll vote for "Haunted House Hang-Up" but I think both have a good chance at winning.

Harum Scarum Sanitarium by far. It is one of the best episodes of TSDS, and one of the spookiest in the whole franchise. There Wolf and Attack of the Headless Horror are good. The others I'm not a fan of.

Would When The Cicada Calls be included since the hospital was pretty much part of the plot.

That's a good point, and I just went back and checked, and the hospital showed up multiple times. I just added it to the poll, thanks!

There Wolf:
I liked this episode. It was pretty humorous. I liked the plot of Scooby not feeling well, he says he’s not hungry and they take him to the Dunsbary Animal Hospital.

Daphne being a mime and didn’t talk for most of the episode haha. It was funny that Miguel has a fear of mimes.

I liked the werewolf as a villain. The backstory of Theodore Meldon becoming a werewolf and locked himself in his house to hide himself was good.

Dr. Dunsbary having weird siblings haha. His brother is a space pirate, his sister is a fairy princess mermaid. His other brother is a cowboy fireman.

Ms. Tuckle acts like a dog haha. Her cat Lulu also acts like a dog. Her and Scooby going at it haha. The names of Lulu’s kittens were horrible.

Daphne explaining the mystery in mime form. The officer said “what the heck was that” haha. Fred then had to explain it.

Miguel as the werewolf. I guess I didn’t see that coming. His plan was to steal one of Lulu’s rare kittens and sell it. He blamed mimes after being caught haha.

It was funny at the end when Dunsbary said that Scooby was fine he was just full haha.

Lulu said Scooby’s catchphrase Lululu haha.

This episode kind of felt like Who’s Afraid of The Big Bad Werewolf. Both episodes have a a werewolf as a villain. Both werewolves were a man who became a werewolf. Silas Long and Theodore Meldon. Shaggy and Scooby dressed up as barbers to groom the werewolf from Big Bad Werewolf. Shaggy and Scooby dressed up as beauticians to groom the werewolf.

I enjoyed this episode a lot! The setting and plot were really unique here, and the werewolf was a really good villain with a cool design. I also liked Daphne's quirk of being a mime. The jokes about the doctor's siblings were hilarious; easily one of the best jokes of the episodes. Scooby just being full at the end was funny.

American Goth:
I enjoyed this episode. The opening was funny with the realtor destroying the hospital. The guy said that it was honestly find before she came along.

The plot of this episode was very original. It centered on goths at an old abandoned hospital. Shaggy catches up with his old friend Amelia who is now goth and he dresses up as a goth to impress her. Even Amelia’s parents are goths. It was funny seeing the whole gang dress up as goths.

It was funny that Dorbin called the gang outsiders but its a fact that goths are the actual outsiders.

Jeff the security guard was funny. He doesn’t take his job seriously and is extremely laid back.

The plant monster was a creepy and scary villain. I liked the backstory of the mad scientist creating the plant monster in the hospital. The scene were he shakes off the stuff on him freaked me out. Dorbin as the culprit was pretty obvious.

Shaggy and Amelia were cute together. I liked that they kissed twice. It was nice that Shaggy accepted that he hasn’t changed and likes the way he is and Amelia also accepted that.

This was a pretty good episode! I also found Shaggy and Amelia's romance to be sweet. The plant monster was a cool choice of villain, and I liked the backstory they came up with for him. I also really liked Jeff haha.

Attack of The Headless Horror:
I really enjoyed this episode. Rick Spartan was such a fun and funny character. How he talks man haha. Cachinga ( Charles Wheetlesby) was also a good character. He threw a spear in the classroom and everyone ran out haha.

Fred going crazy over Rick Spartan the adventurer reminds me of him going crazy over Melbourne Oreily from WNSD.

I liked the running gag of Rick Spartan asking the gang if they want to do something, Fred says yes and the rest say not really haha.

The Headless Horror was a great and unique villain. It has a scary face on its body and it was cool that it can use its mouth to pick up and throw objects.

The culprit was pretty obvious. Marion Spartan just wanted to stop living in the jungle and have a normal life. They made up in the end and everybody went to his room to watch a movie and eat pizza.

Seeing Velma and Shaggy exchange romantic feelings in this episode was sweet. To bad that she said that he doesn’t have those feelings for him anymore. He seemed to cheer himself up by going to get Pizza though.

This was a good episode! Rick was a fun character. I loved the Headless Horror as the villain. His design looks so cool! I also guessed the culprit pretty quickly.
