Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? Episode 52 Review

So I'm sure the first question everyone is going to have is how I saw this episode. While I wish I could share the link with you all, I've been given the link by a friend from HBO Spain, and I was unfortunately told I can not share it similarly to what happened with the second half of Guess Who last March. I'm really sorry I can't share the link so you all can watch it, but I hope everyone knows that I absolutely would if I could. I'm more than happy to answer any questions about the episode (or provide any screenshots of that missing section from the Turkey recording) if anyone wants. I'm really hoping the episode airs very soon so everyone can watch it! Nonetheless, I wanted to review it since I've seen it, and I will keep this review spoiler free and not reveal the culprit since I know no one else has seen it.

I really liked this episode! Carol was definitely a very animated guest star who felt like she played a big role in the episode. I'll admit I haven't seen three out of the four movies the gang (virtually) were in, so I didn't have anything really to say about the first three films - Casablanca, The Searchers, and A Night at the Opera other than the settings were cool. I have seen The Wizard of Oz, though, and I felt like they did an amazing job with parodying that film. I thought Daphne's voice being different when she was Dorothy was pretty cool, and I also thought it was interesting how they had both Carol and Daphne be Dorothy in the film.

I think this villain was one of my favorites of the entire series. The glowing blue eyes and the fact it could shapeshift was amazing! The villain's name, though, was the absolute worst of the series, and possibly of the franchise. The villain is called "The Ghost Monster" which is just such a cringey and unoriginal name for such a cool monster.

Having seen this last episode, I can definitely say that the voice actor episode should have been last. I get what they were going for here: a tribute to classic movies of sorts, because Guess Who is comprised of television and movie stars, but the voice actor one still felt like it would have been a more special one to make the finale. Carol singing her trademark goodbye song from her TV show was really sweet though, and is likely another reason they put this one last.

The episode did kind of feel a lot like "A Run Cycle Through Time!" pacing-wise. Cramming four different movies into 20 minutes didn't do the parodies as much justice as they could have done. It felt a little rushed, but not horrible. The Wizard of Oz one felt like a perfect amount of time, so maybe the fact that I hadn't seen the other three films influenced how I saw the pacing.

I liked this episode a lot, but it's definitely not top 10 material for me, so I'm going to place it at #17/50.

They've already spoiled the culprits on scoobypedia anyway, motive is pretty lame tbh

Yeah, it wasn't the best motive. I didn't mention it in the review because I didn't want to ruin it.

Don't agree with posting reviews when hardly anyone's watched it. They just seem to get lost among the other posts before I get chance to read them when I watch the episode, oh well.

I remember that you mentioned that with the second half of season 2 as well. Sorry you don't agree with it. I guess my main motivation for doing it is to get the info out there for anyone who wants it, and in both cases I was actually asked by the person who gave me the link to post a review. I'm definitely not trying to brag about seeing the episode before anyone else, so I hope it doesn't come off that way. I'd absolutely give you all a link if I could. I can always pin the post to the top of the blog when the Drive link comes out.

No worries, I just feel it would be better for you also to not have to try and hide spoilers in your review and to be able to discuss it with as many other people as possible. Totally your choice, but just feels a little redundant and disappointing to us who haven't seen it when done this way.

6/3/2021 02:20:48 pm

It's definitely something I'm conflicted about too, because I think people do want to know about it, but at the same time you're right that posting it later would allow more discussion. For this particular one, I didn't really feel like I had to hide anything about the culprit. It's not some amazing reveal that really needed to be discussed, and all I would have said if this were a normal review likely would have just been "the culprit was easy to guess for me" or something like that.

You're correct, but I'd define the episode as being widely available when anyone who wants to watch it can see it through a link (or streaming service), so I get his point.

Some good news, all of us should be getting a link to the Carol Burnett one today or tomorrow. I was able to ask the person where I got this if it could uploaded to a Drive link, and they said yes, so Peralaan's uploading it as we speak. I should be able to provide Peralaan with the final two episodes (which I haven't seen yet), which are almost positively coming within the next week as well.

Now that I finally watched the episode, I'd say this was one of the weirder episodes. I loved the "ghost" monster's design, mainly because it looked kinda like the grim reaper. On the other hand, not a fan of that oh so creative name. I can't say I liked or disliked Carol; on a positive note, she seemed really interested in the role. On the negative, her acting like all the lead roles kinda got in the way of her own personality. Other than that, I just want to point out sadistic the trap was. One drop I get, but that was a bit much.

Ha! Yeah, the name sucked. Carol did seem super into her role which made me like her. The trap was a little sadistic lol. I really liked the ghost's design too (I refuse to call it that stupid name haha), and it's easily one of my favorites of the show.

Saw the episode this morning and I really liked it. This episode really gave me a cyber chase vibe. Carol Burnet was a very fun and entertaining guest star. The Monster was super cool. I also like that Which Witch is Which reference.

I thought about cyber chase in this episode. Very similar, but I don't think they are a copy of each other which was good. I also noticed the which witch is which reference!

I truly did enjoy this episode!
The mix of movies was very enjoyable and fun. The scene where the gang jump off the plane reminded me of “Omelettes are Forever” in “Be Cool Scooby Doo!” The fact that it was the same monster every time fitting in the different atmospheres was fun for me. I don’t have much to say about this episode because all the different scenarios worked perfectly fine for me and I didn’t really take notice of the pacing of every film. I must say, the trap for this episode was hands down one of my favourites from the series and was done so well! This episode ranks 4/24 for me.

My comment about the pacing could have been because I hadn't seen 3 of those movies. I felt the Wizard of Oz was paced fine, which I've seen, I just thought the other three felt a little rushed.

But I do wish Warner Bros came up with a way better name for the villain though.

I was just strolling through Instagram and I saw a Tracy Mark Lee’s post about this episode. According to Tracy Mark Lee, the monsters actual name is The Silver Screen Spectre. Now that’s a cool name for such and original monster. There also drawings of the flying blue monkeys and eariler draft of the wicked witch.

Reply
WildwindVampire link
6/6/2021 10:53:45 am

That's such a better name for it than "Ghost Monster!" Though Tracy said he hadn't seen the episode yet, and he posted a title card a few months that said "The TV and Movieland Monsters!", which we know was changed. I wonder if the same is the case here: maybe the Silver Screen Spectre was an old name for the villain and they changed it? If they did change it from the Silver Screen Spectre, "Ghost Monster" is definitely a far inferior name lol.

I have mixed feelings about this episode.

It is really good for the most part! A highlight was Carol's different outfits and the different movie styles, the variety was so cool. Speaking of which, Carol did say a lot of lines that cracked me up! She is pretty funny here! And plus, when she says sassy lines, it's not to the point where it's kinda mean like the Ricky Gervais episode.

The Wizard of Oz part was defientely my favourite part of this episode. Like you said, it definetely was the right amount of time! One of my favourite parts was the Witch melting and the silver screen specter slowly rising up. IT WAS EPIC!!
I do wish the flying monkeys got more screen time though, they looked so cool.
The trap was kinda cool but kinda cringey too lol.
I loved the battle in the bar in the Searchers part of this episode. Granted, some of it felt like filler, but I liked seeing the different antics the gang got up to in a western film. SHAGGY AND SCOOBY DRINKING BEER WAS UNEXPECTED BUT HILARIOUS!

The Silver Screen Spectre was easily the best part about this episode for me. It cloning himself was awesome! Overall, the animation definetely improved in season 2! An also, I didn't realise how big he was until he was flying towards the trap, like woah!!
I already knew the culprits but STILL, THEY WERE SO OBVIOUS.
(Spoilers here) When Velma was talking about how someone must've programmed the ghost into the world I was thinking 'What else must've happened? Did Bob from down the street spill his pepsi and then the ghost appeared?' lol

Overall, like you again, not top 10 material for me but still a really enjoyable episode! The sign off at the end was sweet but Haunt still should've been the finale.
8.5/10!
Probably ranked #15!

Yah I really like the western scene because of how pretty cool it was with it being battle between the spectre and the gang and the different antics there was during that scene. The Spectre rising up after being melted, I rewinded it a few times it was pretty cool.

Carol was really fun and sassy in this episode! She made a really good guest star and seemed very engaged and excited about the role.

The flying monkeys for sure should have gotten more screen time! #JusticeForFlyingMonkeys haha. I definitely felt the same way about the trap. It got kinda cringey after they kept dropping the house on her repeatedly, but it was a cool idea!

I hadn't thought of it as "Scooby and Shaggy were drinking beer!!!" but you're right, they were. Just having a cold one with the boys lol. I'm sure the writers were able to justify it since they didn't say "beer" and it was part of the movie.

There was for sure a big improvement in the animation between season 1 and 2. The ghost in this episode was one of the best monster designs of the series, so it sucks a little the series is ending since they're just starting to improve the monster designs.
