Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? Episode 45 Review

I didn't expect to love this episode as much as I did, but wow, this was incredible! Reverend Run was a fantastic guest star with an amazing presence in the episode. He seemed like he was so into his role, and I honestly found his little raps throughout the episode to be kind of quirky and fun.

The setting of the abandoned Youth Center was super creepy and made the episode feel like it had the darkest tone of any episode in the show. The Ghost of Tabb Tatters and the Skeleton of Bones McCann were both incredible villains. I don't think they could have possibly made either of them any better. I wish we would have gotten to see Tabb Tatter's face turn into a skull more than just the one time in the cold open though, that was so spooky! The shadow of Bones McCann's skeleton coming down the hall towards the gang mid-way through the episode was arguably the creepiest scene in the show.

Another thing I found to be incredibly strong in this episode was the mystery. One shortcoming this series has repeatedly struggled with is not developing the mysteries very much in favor of focusing on the guest stars, but I thought this episode had a great balance of creating an engaging mystery and focusing on Reverend Run. The Crystal Cove reference when Velma was looking up the library database was fun too!

Honestly, even Shaggy and Scooby rapping didn't bother me at all. I found that and the "rap battle" with the Skeleton of Bones McCann pretty amusing. Shaggy and Scooby's "driver's license" rap was so cringey that it somehow became amazing because it was so bad lol. Olivia Rodrigo who? haha Scooby's rap at the end though wasn't in good as English as it was in Turkish. The Turkish version was far better haha.

I truly expected this to be an average episode, but this far surpassed any expectations I would have had for it. Maybe it's just the mood I'm in today...but just everything about this episode was amazing to me. This climbs right to the top for me, right below the Hex Girls at #2/52.

Yes this episode was so spectacular. Reverend Run was an awesome guest star and really into his role. His rapping was pretty on point. Shaggy and Scooby rapping was pretty cool as well. This episode is without the darkest in this series. The Ghost of Tabb Tatters and Skeleton of Bones Mcann were really cool villains. How Tabb Tatters face turn into a skeleton remained me of The Ghost of Dapper Jack Rogers, how his gaze turned from human to skeletal. I liked how the Skeleton of Bones Mcann appeared from the floor and the ceiling, gave this episode a really scary vibe. There was indeed balance with the mystery and the guest star in this particular episode.

Totally agreed. I feel like the rapping bits could have been painfully cringey, but they were done in such a way that it was silly and I enjoyed that. The Skeleton of Bones McCann coming out of the floor (and the ceiling) was super creepy!

What I really like about this episode was the theme: rap/hip. Most Scooby Doo music episodes are centered around rock n roll. I like that in this episode, it was a different type of music genre. I’m no saying I hate Rock n Roll, just cool to see something new that they never did before. It funny to because i always thought would they do a mystery that centered of rap/hip hop. They finally did and it’s with a famous hip hop artist.

Agreed, but what's funny about your comment is Run DMC (the band Reverend Run was a part of) is actually most famous for doing a rap cover of a rock song with Aerosmith called "Walk This Way."

Oh yah you are correct, I first heard about RUN DMC from this sitcom I used to watch Everybody Hates Chris I don’t know if you ever watched it. Anyway, they mentioned RUN DMC and Aerosmith singing Walk This Way. I also started listening to som of their songs ever since then.

I have heard of Everybody Hates Chris, but haven't watched any episodes of it.

This was another okay episode. There isn't anything I really hated, but at the same time there isn't much I loved aside from it feeling like a classic scooby mystery. The one thing I really liked was Bones McCann, I think his personality really funny and creepy at the same time. Overall decent, but not one of my favorites.

I think that's what I liked about it so much, that it was a very classic-feeling Scooby mystery and it wasn't them trying to force the classic feeling like they did with the first few episodes of season 1. You make a great point about Bones being funny and creepy at the same time lol.

Yeah it is just a small complaint, but it is one of the things that I wish the series didn't do so much. I do really like the episode though. Like you predicted, it definitely did have the darkest atmosphere of the series. I'd really like to see a darker series next, like Scooby Doo Show season 2. A lot of it has to do with using darker colors and dark background music

WildwindVampire link
6/10/2021 12:16:49 am

Even seeing the Turkey recording of the episode, the atmosphere looked incredibly dark given the gang was just walking around the abandoned youth center by themselves at night. I'm really glad that my prediction ended up coming true! Even then, I still didn't expect to like it quite as much as I did. I would LOVE a darker series next in the style of the second season of The Scooby-Doo Show! That would be incredible! I hope that's what we end up getting!

Given the general public’s preference of SDMI to Be Cool and Guess Who, we could be due for a darker series. Maybe not SDMI level but something a bit less goofy

WildwindVampire link
6/11/2021 10:52:47 am

Agreed! People loved SDMI so I think a darker series would do really well ratings-wise.

This episode has some huge highlights for me and I’m sure that they put this episode high.
First of all, the atmosphere didn’t seem all that big to me, felt like a few rooms. The chases were really fun and didn’t get boring. I enjoyed Reverend Run too, especially when him, Shaggy, Scooby and Bones were ‘rapping’. The biggest highlights for me were the ghosts. Both were done so well and I really enjoyed bones being divided into pieces and coming out of nowhere! The library part did feel a bit useless in my eyes. The scenes in the underground tunnels and when the gang are looking for the golden microphone reminded me of “The Sword, The Fox and The Scooby Doo”! I also enjoyed the part where the gang are hanging the microphone to each other while taunting bones which I think is the closest thing to a chase scene we’ve got in the series! Something does trouble me though, if bones’ bones got separated so much, how was it just a costume? Minor complaint

The ghosts were my favorite villains of the series, honestly. They were so creepy! I hadn't thought about Bones's bones separating so much, but that's definitely a plot hole given it was a costume haha.

Any chance of a link? Sorry to be that person. This and Total Jeopardy are the only ones I'm missing. So glad I found this site. What a great resource! Thank you for everything you guys do. The comments are great too.

I haven't been thrilled with most episodes of this particular series. A lot of the guest stars are D listers and they hew a little too close to the formula for my liking. And they seem to sideline Fred. Is the guest star ever once related to or friends with Fred Jones? But I love the art.

No worries, Barry. I'm so glad you like the site! I agree with your criticisms of Guess Who. Some of the episodes, especially the early ones, force the nostalgia a little bit. I hadn't thought about Fred not being related to any of the guest stars, that's interesting! I guess he got Bobby Flay in Gourmet Ghost and that's it haha. Yeah, the art is amazing!

I was also very very shocked when I saw this episode, as I too thought it would be average.

I REALLY enjoyed this episode!
Reverend Run was one of the best guest stars in the series, and I like him a lot even though I knew absolutely nothing about him prior to this episode. I felt like he had great balance: Present but not dominating the episode, while still being able to make the rest of the episode good too if you get what I'm saying.Shaggy and Scooby rapping was so fun! I felt like they were trying to learn off of Rev. Run which was cute. And Scooby rapping at the end is one of my favourite scenes in the episode. YOU GO SCOOB! haha.

I like talking about settings, they re the foundation of the mystery and can set the tone for it.
But **Sniffs** this...
.....

Did NOT disappoint AT ALL!
That hallway scene was absolute **Chefs kiss* and I too loved the shot of Bones McCann in it! The settings really gave off some vibes, my favourite ones being the library, the hallway I just talked about and the bar!
Speaking of which...

THE GHOSTS IN THIS ONE WERE SOME OF THE BEST IN THE SERIES!
I especially loved Tabb Tatters, even more than Bones McCann. He was so spooky, the way he had almost like a fluidity, and damn that skull shot at the beginning gave me chills. And also, I think that he was kinda funny?
Like when Tabb first appeared and Rev Run was actually excited about it, he was like "Must appreciated sir, let me return the kindness"
THAT CRACKED ME UP A LOT!
Tabb kinda reminded me of Redbeard, like the way they could talk and say.....not very ghostly things LOL!
I also loved the lore behind the two! They weren't just ghosts who had nothing to do with the place they were haunting!

Now, I've just been praising this episode, but there are quite a few reasons why this episode didn't reach top 10 for me.
First, there were a lack of suspets, and since everyone knows that the less obvious the bad guy the more likely the culprit, this one was easy to figure out.
Second, I wish we got more of that city at night. I know it's petty but it really seemed promising and I wish we could've got a chase or something there I'm not sure.
Third, they spent way too long on the trap. Which kinda fits with another reason this episode didn't quite reach top 10: Filler.
I feel there was quite a bit of filler in this episode, like the table hockey scene.
I also didn't like Velma doing her normal mystery solving without cluing us in. I know you have no idea we, the audience, exist Velm, but d you really care about us? Really?

But still, great, really funny episode!
8.5/10 and #16 on my list!

I knew about Reverend Run before the episode, as I'd heard a few of the more famous Run DMC (the band he's in) songs like "Walk This Way," "It's Tricky" and his Christmas one "Christmas in Hollis" (the last of which has been used in a lot of commercials). Shaggy and Scooby trying to learn from Reverend Run was super cute! :)

"That hallway scene was absolute **Chefs kiss*" Aww hahaha, yeah that was probably my favorite scene of the entire show. Interesting you liked Tabb Tatters better, I'd say I preferred Bones McCann. I wish Tabb would have showed his skull face more than just the once, it was super creepy! It always bums me out when they put some super cool touch on a villain's design and then only use it one time. That's the crazy part! Both of the villains were kinda funny, even though they were scary at the same time! That's how you make a good villain haha. The lore behind both the villains was excellent.

I didn't share any of your criticisms, especially not the filler one. I also think them just being in the abandoned youth center made it creepier. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that this episode can do no wrong in my book haha.
