According to Maxwell Atoms' blog, Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob was originally planned to be the end of the Curse of the 13th Ghost/Return to Zombie Island trilogy. However, this was changed for an unknown reason.

Oh interesting, I wonder why they changed it. I think it’s good that Sword and The Scoob was it’s own thing and not part of the trilogy.

I agree it's a good thing. I'm not really sure why they changed it, as Happy Halloween didn't really feel like a conclusive end to the trilogy given the villain got away.

I really liked Cutlar Toe as a villain, In my opinion I think he is almost just as evil and dangerous as Professor Pericles was in Mystery Incorporated. 11/10/2023 04:54:57 pm
I thought he was a good villain too in Happy Halloween. I just wish they would have had more of a conclusive ending to the story arc rather than a cliffhanger.

All three movies were co-produced by Jim Krieg, so it tracks. Glad this one didn't end up as a follow-up to those two abominations. It probably changed once Maxwell Atoms came on as director, as he also did Happy Halloween right around the same time. Seems to me like Jeremy Adams (writer of RTZI) wrote the original draft of the film and then Atoms rewrote the script and in the process making it a standalone film. I conclude that by seeing that only Adams is credited for the story, but both of them are credited for the screenplay. When that happens, it's often the case that the person with a story credit wrote the original draft while the person without a story credit wrote the final draft.

I think you're likely right. I'm guessing RTZI and Sword and the Scoob were both written in 2019, as I was looking back and it appears we actually got word that Sword was coming three months before Happy Halloween. We found out about Sword in September 2019, whereas we discovered Happy Halloween in December 2019 at the same time as the Courage film, which would line up with the theory Sword was written first.

It's impossible for them to have been written in 2019, especially RTZI. Movies get written years before they get released, they're done even before pre-production or at latest during pre-production. There's no way to go into production without a script, and production and post-production both take usually at least 1 year each. That's why we typically hear rumors about upcoming Scooby DTVs (and shows) over a year in advance. While rewrites and reshoots after the filming/animation is done are common for big budget productions (theatrical and premium television) to refine and tighten up the movie/show after directors and producers see the early/pre-release edits, it's a lot less likely to see such changes and reworkings for pretty low budget direct-to-video flicks like these Scooby movies cuz they don't really have the money to do them after most of the work has already been done on the film. 11/7/2023 06:35:37 am
That was my bad, that should have said Happy Halloween (not RTZI) and Sword and the Scoob were both written in 2019, since we got announcements for them around the same time. Sword and the Scoob was announced first, which lines up with the fact that it would have been written/completed first.

We got spared from this movie somehow being a retcon sequel to Scared a Lot in Camelot lol

I'm not even sure how that would work given I don't know what they'd retcon here lol. I guess we likely know who Velma being in denial about the time travel came from now, though.

I don’t know how either, but I have officially learned never put it past these people to ruin something good lol 11/8/2023 11:50:46 am
Ah yes, I’m sure they would have retconned it to make Merlin and the Black Knight Shaggy’s hip younger brothers or something lol.

Maybe Zarko was really another guy in a mask himself lol 11/8/2023 06:24:49 pm
They would probably make Zarko a shady real estate developer, considering ghosts and monsters always turn out to be real estate scammers according to a certain WB exec lol.

That’s right, being a screw up magician is Zarko’s side hustle from being a shady real estate developer

With this post I have a question. Is there any word on what the next Scooby Doo movie will be about. I wonder if it will be another crossover movie or a movie where’s it just the gang?

There's been no word yet unfortunately. Personally, I'd prefer a solo gang movie. I do enjoy the crossovers but they've been doing so many lately that I'd prefer if they start doing more movies where it is just the gang.

There is one crossover movie I would like them to do: Scooby Doo Meets Jonny Quest. I think that’s a crossover that’s been long overdue. It makes sense for the Scooby Gang to meet the Quest team.

I haven't seen Jonny Quest, but I think a lot of people would love a crossover between the two!

I don't even remember any scenes with the dragon in the cover, that's how boring it was.

There also might have been more studio interference. In one of the other threads, we were talking about how the writers for Curse of the 13th Ghost and Return to Zombie Island both said that Jim Krieg, who was involved with both of those films, interfered quite a bit with what the other writers wanted. I imagine a similar thing may have happened here, since Krieg was involved.

that’s actually interesting to me. i mean i am happy with the fact that’s it’s own thing, but i do wonder what it would’ve been like had it been in the same trilogy as those movies like how it was originally planned. i feel like it would’ve been similar to Happy Halloween in the sense of it not being a sequel to a previous incarnation of Scooby and just would’ve been a sequel to the other two. idk it’s interesting to me especially since The Sword and the Scoob is probably the Scooby movie that has grown on me the most.

I would have been interested to see what it would have been like as well if it were connected to Happy Halloween! I imagine it would have similarly wrapped up the plot with the sheriff, but maybe they would have involved the time travel somehow?

maybe. i think one reason im interested in the fact that it was originally planned to be a part of the recent trilogy is because there’s flashbacks to previous Scooby incarnations after the gang have their first encounter with Morgan Le Fay, including one with Scrappy. like it did make references to past Scooby media too. (in a different way, sure, but still) 11/19/2023 07:59:10 am
I hadn't thought of that, but that's true! I hope they wouldn't have tried to retcon those like they did with the first two films in the trilogy.

i think it’d also be cool if the Sword and the Scoob was the start of it’s own trilogy. if they had went with the idea of it being a part of a trilogy, they could’ve maybe done that. like a time period sort of trilogy where every movie is based around a different time period.

Sorry for the delayed response to this, somehow I missed this comment. That’s such a cool idea, I would love to see a time travel series of movies (or just a series in general) of them traveling to different famous time periods!
