John Stephenson was famous for voicing a number of miscellaneous Hanna-Barbera characters, including 70+ characters and monsters in a number of classic Scooby-Doo episodes from 1969-1985 (and even voiced a few in What's New, Scooby-Doo?) John's last ever role before his death was voicing the sheriff in Scooby-Doo Abracadabra Doo, which is particularly special considering he voiced a number of sheriffs in early episodes of Scooby-Doo.

Interesting how he was involved in almost all Scooby Series up until What's New but was only involved in one movie. This was a great fun fact, it's great to learn more about these voice actors so they are forever remembered for the work they did.

Agreed, although he was not in any episodes of Pup. It's cool they got him to come back for What's New, considering it had been a nearly 20 year gap since he'd had any involvement with the franchise.

Part of me thinks they probably gave him the part in abracadabra as a send off. A lot of studios seem to do that for aging stars, give them small cameos in movies. 9/12/2023 03:03:11 pm
Yeah, I think you're probably right. He passed away in 2015 so they likely gave him the role knowing it would probably be his last.

John also voiced the sheriff who was in every episode of The Clue Club. As a kid watching the 70s and 80s series, I always thought it would have been a cool idea for the Scooby gang to have a regular police contact like the Clue Club did, something they really didn’t have until Sheriff Bronson Stone in “Mystery Incorporated” (and he was more of a foil than an ally anyway).

I didn't know he played a sheriff in every episode of Clue Club. That is really cool and makes it even more special that he got to play a sheriff again one last time in his final role. Yeah, them having a sheriff contact would be cool, although I feel like many of the sheriffs in Where Are You looked almost identical.

Honestly, I realize why he isn’t a part of the conversation as much as the main characters, but one could argue that John Stephenson is one of the defining voice actors of the Scooby Doo franchise, and while I obviously wouldn’t put him on the level of Casey, Frank, etc., I think he deserves to be talked about more

Completely agree, given how many roles he had as supporting characters throughout a huge chunk of the franchise.
