Shaggy's name was not first revealed to be Norville until the post-Scrappy era of the franchise. "The Sludge Monster from the Earth's Core" from A Pup Named Scooby-Doo is the first episode where the name is ever used.

There was an old interview done on ScoobyAddicts where Joe Ruby and Ken Spears claim they came up with the name Norville. Which would mean it took them close to 20 years to ever use the name in any official material.

I think I remember that interview now that you mentioned it! It's crazy to think that it took so long for them to use the name officially.

Tom Ruegger said on Twitter that he definitely came up with the name, so not sure what was up with Ruby and Spears taking credit for that. 8/25/2023 05:34:23 pm
That's really interesting that Tom may have created that name. I did some research and found the interview that Ringo-Suuta was talking about, and Joe Ruby did take credit for coming up with Norville. The exact quote Joe said is "There wasn't a story behind Shaggy, only that "Shaggy" came first, then we came up with his formal name." I suppose it's possible that "we" could include both them and Tom Ruegger. Leave a Reply. |
