A recent copy of a script from "The Warlock of Wimbledon" purchased by a frequent commenter on this blog, ScoobyDooUK, lists the warlock's name as "Amthos," rather than Anthos. It's unknown if this is an early version of the script, or we've actually been getting the name wrong all these years. Either option seems like it could be a possibility, as it's also mentioned in the script that the Devil Hound is black, when the final design used in the episode was a dark brown dog. Thanks to ScoobyDooUK for contributing the fun fact for this week!

I'm sure it's a typo, as Anthos is a real Greek word, while Amthos doesn't exist. They also pronounce it with an "n" in the episode.

Oh and this one at 3:46, this is the most damning evidence of them all. 6/26/2023 06:21:04 pm
The 3:46 clip I couldn't really tell, but the other two do kinda sound like Amthos. Becker makes a good point about it being a real Greek word, though, so I have no idea. The spelling also could have been from an early draft of the script that was changed later, who knows.

Given how uneven the writing in this episode is, I wouldn't be surprised if the writers didn't know if it was Anthos or Amthos either LOL

Probably because they were reading that draft of the script written by someone who didn't really do their research into how that Greek word is actually spelled. No way am I calling that guy Amthos, that word doesn't even remotely exist and sounds very unnatural.

Well the words 'Jaguaro', 'Willawaw' etc also don't exist so I don't think that matters. And since the episode is set in England and the Amthos family is supposed to be British I think it's just a coincidence that there's a similar greek word. And the greek word means flower which is the last word you'd use to describe and evil Warlock lol. 6/27/2023 08:35:40 am
@Matt Lol! Maybe two different writers wrote each half of the episode and one of them named him Anthos, and the other named him Amthos haha.

I’m gonna stick with Anthos as well, if only because Amthos sounds absolutely awful lol

Infact, here's the perfect example. The word "Williwaw" exists, but they call it the "Willawaw". Almost as if they are purposefully adjusting the real word to make it more unique to the show etc etc.

There is a similar issue with "Lock The Door, It's the Minotaur".

That's a really good point. There's also "Katazuma" which doesn't exist, but Montezuma" does exist. I can't imagine there was any copyright issues with using the names, so you're probably right about Joe and Bill having some sort of policy about switching the names.

Wow! I didn't know that. That's very interesting. Maybe we are onto something here.

Hey Wildwind, i thought of a fun fact. In the Secret Serum, Daphne threatened the vampire with a wooden steak. Sarah Michelle Gellar played Buffy in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and she played Daphne in the first two live action movies.

Thanks for the suggestion! I can add it to the running list I have, but I have quite a few already written, so it may be a bit.

Maybe they altered stuff so as not to cause offense at any appropriation.

I never knew about Daniel's last name being altered from an Australian location. Given all the clues, I would say that's probably the most likely option. Leave a Reply. |
