For today’s profile, and the 5 year anniversary of this site being published, I have a very special fan spotlight! Today’s spotlight is my good friend Mike Jozic, who you may know better as the host of A Podcast Named Scooby-Doo. Mike interviews cast and crew members that have worked on Scooby-Doo in his podcast, in attempt to fill in some of the missing pieces of the franchise history.
Without further ado, I introduce Mike Jozic as today’s fan spotlight. 1. What is your name? My full name as it appears on my birth certificate is Mike Jozic. Not Michael, as many people assume. No middle name. Three syllables. 'Nuff said. 2. How did you get into Scooby-Doo? I got into Scooby-Doo like most people. As a kid, watching it on Saturday mornings. Considering my age I probably picked it up during the Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo Show and with reruns of the original series. 3. What is your favorite Scooby-Doo episode and film? Why? My favourite episodes and films change quite frequently. I love "Mystery 101" and "How to Train Your Coward" from Be Cool, Scooby-Doo because I love the fresh take and sense-of-humour the series had. That vending machine joke still puts me in stitches to this day and I get such a kick out of the deconstructionist quality of "Train Your Coward." Where are You! is my favourite series, though, so I have to call out "Foul Play in Funland" and "Spooky Space Kook" as favourites as well. As far as films, "Zombie Island" or "Rock and Roll Mystery" or "Camp Scare" or "Samurai Sword" or "Curse of the 13th Ghost." Any one of those on any random day could conceivably be my favourite. 4. What ways are you involved in the Scooby fandom online? My involvement in fandom revolves almost 100% around the podcast I produce called A Podcast Named Scooby-Doo! where I interview creatives who have contributed to the franchise over the last 50 years in an attempt to create something of an oral history of the show. 5. In your opinion, what is the best series or era of Scooby? I feel Where are You! is the best series. The classic characters and stories are the bee's knees to me. Mystery Inc. and Be Cool come in a close second. 6. If they could make a sequel to one Scooby-Doo series or film, what would it be? They already came back with the 13th Ghost sequel which was awesome. I'd be happy to see WAY! revisited but I'm not sure how that would work. I'd love to see a Mystery Inc. or Be Cool movie or mini-series. 7. What direction would you like to see the franchise go in the future? I hope the franchise continues to try new things and be bold in their television programming while giving fans a more traditional gang to follow in the films. I think 13th Ghost was a good step and shows that revisiting old iterations as movies could be a fun way to keep the torch alive while moving forward with other things. I would love a live-action Scooby show to happen a la Riverdale or Sabrina. It should happen. I also want the comic books to play a larger role and have someone adventurous taking over the license. There is no reason Scooby-Doo comics need to be as bland as they often are. 8. Who is your favorite member of the gang and why? My favourite gang member changes all the time. Depends on the show, depends on who's writing them. Velma is my Mystery Inc. go-to, Daphne in Be Cool. Shaggy and Scoob in the original series and Fred is my What's New guy. I feel like there are a lot of Sophie's Choice questions, here. 9. What is your favorite villain? Why? Space Kook is so visually incredible that he is my favourite villain hands down. And that LAUGH! 10. In your opinion, who is the best recurring (non-gang) character in the franchise? Marcie? Angel Dynamite? 11. Do you have a Scooby-Doo collection? If so, what’s in it? I do. It is very small and consists of a few figures, a bunch of comics and movies, and the stamp set that came out last year (or was that this year?). That's pretty much it unless you count the conversations on my hard drive. 12. What do you think has made the franchise so popular that it’s still going strong after 50 years? I have actually said this several times on my podcast. I think the fact that it's just five friends, they're young and archetypal, there's mysteries. They are all equal parts of the collective and loyal to the end. It's a dynamic that people either desire or find easy to identify with and there are no gender roles or period issues to complicate things. 13. What is one fun fact about you in real life? I have actually been run over by a bus. 14. Please feel free to share anything else you’d like to here! Nothing else to share just a general shout out to everybody in the community to thank you for your continued interest and support. I have met some incredible people through the show and am excited where the podcast will take me in the future. Also, we are all confined by reality. It's a thing. Try not to fight it. Thank you so much to Mike for taking time out of his busy schedule for this spotlight! If you have any comments or questions for Mike, be sure to leave them in the comments below.
