Last month, we had a cryptic announcement that a "special episode" of Velma is coming from the LinkedIn page of a storyboard artist. Not many details were provided at the time, but now, a listing revealing more information about the special has popped up on the Entertainment Identifier Registry. According to EIDR, we will be getting a Velma Halloween special. The listing was entered into the database on October 25, 2023. The special will air sometime in 2024, presumably around October for Halloween.
It is unclear if the Halloween special is a part of season 2, or if it's a separate episode that isn't a part of any season. According to character designer Dinah Kalaha's resumé, character designing for season 2 began in November 2022 and just wrapped up in October 2023. This confirms that a season 2 was planned before the show had aired.

I second this motion lol. I would be really disappointed if we only get this and season 2 of Velma.

I'm pretty sure season 2 will be the last one for Velma, I wonder if they gave it a proper end by the end of season 2 or maybe the special episode will do that, tie some of the loose ends up.

I hope so, I honestly am pretty confident it only got renewed because so many people were giving it hate views. I haven’t met anybody in the fandom other than two people who enjoyed the show.

I've been thinking about whether or not I want to watch, as I am a bit of a completist when it comes to franchises I love, so I'll hate watch pretty much anything once. That said, I also don't want to encourage them to continue to renew the series by giving it attention, considering it's pretty certain that the only reason this got such high ratings is because many people were hate-watching. For the first time ever, I am thinking more and more that I will just ignore this and season 2.

I think what makes me more mad than the show itself is that WB is canning actual projects with heart put into them while still making this garbage. I don't know whether these things would've been good or not, but seeming like people poured their heart into it is more than I can say about Velma, where I would be very concerned for anyone who poured their heart into a show and THAT was the result. 11/28/2023 08:00:55 am
Yeah, it really makes me sad that they're cancelling content like Haunted High Rise for more of Velma. I completely agree with you, and I know you haven't seen the series, but I can confirm most of the show's writing is done to be edgy and for the shock value.

@Wildwind, I watched all of Velma season 1 thanks to my "uncle", so you can do the same if y'know what I mean lol 11/28/2023 05:49:38 pm
Ah yes, I know your uncle quite well. Cool guy, he's got access to soooo many shows lol. In seriousness yeah I have thought about going that route to watch it, and may end up doing that. I still don't think I'd review the episodes on the blog though, as I feel like that still kinda gives the show attention, and it didn't seem to matter that the show got mostly negative attention in terms of it getting renewed.

Completist - I know what you mean. I'll watch it and while I don't love it I don't hate it with a passion. I'm more in the "highly disappointed" zone.

What the Scooby-Doo community needs in 2024 is a suggestion survey 🤎

If a poll is done for that my recommendation is a Scooby Doo game on a console, a Scooby Doo movie not using nostalgia or cameo as selling points, and new merchandise based on fan favorite movies/shows. Example: werewolf shaggy, Ghoul school characters, and what's new Scooby Doo monster pop figures

So many of my favorite shows and movies are cancelled nowdays (in the scooby franchice and in general) and yet Velma is getting a s02 and a special. Thats weird...

It's really weird to me too! Like I mentioned in an above comment, I can only imagine it got renewed because it got so many curiosity/hate views.

I don't get it either, I guess they must not have cared that even though Velma got a lot of viewership, most of the views were either curiosity views or hate watching rather than anybody liking the show. I suppose from a corporate standpoint, the views are bringing in money regardless of whether or not people are watching it because they like it or not.

Because they are both incompetent and have no respect for their creators. They would rather try to capitalize off of hate watching than have enough respect for the creators of other pieces of media that they shelve for tax write offs. This is a large part of why I will never watch this show or support it, and I encourage others to also not give them any more attention or views

And why do you think we get a lot of bad sequels out of Hollywood... 11/29/2023 04:20:41 pm
I think this feels worse than your average "bad Hollywood sequel" to me, because in most cases, bad sequels are typically just low-quality/cheaply made follow-ups to films and shows that the general public generally liked. In this case, the general opinion of Velma is that most people hated it, yet they still renewed it for another season just because they made a lot of money off of the hate views. It normally wouldn't bother me as much, because obviously every company is out to make money, and they can't please everybody. However, the fact that this is the only show they've left uncanceled, and wrote off everything that most fans actually wanted to see, is frustrating to me. It sends the message that they don't care about what the fans want as long as they are making money, which personally leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's possible for them to strike a balance between making money and still release things that most fans actually want to see.

I agree with Wildwind that this is absolutely worse. Especially when Zaslav tries to frame himself as some kind of hero talking about how much “courage” it took to cancel shows and movies for tax write offs 11/30/2023 12:33:13 pm
Yeah, sorry, but there was no “courage” involved in doing what he did. I could understand it if he was talking about a few films and shows, but he has cancelled so much now that it is clear that he only cares about money and his own self-interest. Like I said, all companies’ main goal is obviously profit, but it is possible to make decisions to maximize profit while still staying in touch with what fans actually want and not going overboard.

Completely agreed. I don’t know if he was trying to do some PR for sympathy, but it not only failed in that case, but actively made it worse. This man is just the worst, I’m sorry

That's a very good point and not something I had thought of, but you're right that it's possible that cancelling it could have cost them more than just letting it continue. I jus thought of this, but I guess it also could be possible that they ordered more than 10 episodes when the show was greenlit, and just didn't air them all as one season.
