We started off a tad lighter this week because the Scrappy shorts barely had any ghosts, but the premise of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo automatically qualifies that entire series, which beefed up the poll quite a bit again!
The results for our 1969 and 70s poll are in, and "A Night of Fright Is No Delight" moves ahead to the final round! Those are both a part of season 3, which aired in 1990 and 1991, so they will be in next week's '90s poll.

Another one of the better Scrappy shorts, although it was silly that the lighthouse keeper's ghost got scared of Scooby's shadow.

This is one of the more enjoyable Scrappy shorts. I really like the banshee behind the door, and feel he would have been much better utilized if he was the main villain of an episode!

28. Interesting that you would put this last for the series. I'm not a 13 Ghosts expert to know if that is a popular opinion, but I at least would put it higher lol 9/11/2023 08:53:39 am
28. The sense I've gotten is that it's not a popular opinion lol. It's a decent episode but it's never been quite as strong for me as the other episodes. I would rank it ahead of "Coast to Ghost" if we were judging these as episodes, but a big reason I don't like the episode is that I'm not really a fan of Demondo's design or personality.

28. Understand how it's very similar style to the Zomba episode , in fact it's weird how many times the gang gets sucked into places in this series, Mirror world, Comic books, old movies, into the future etc. but Platypus Duck probably is one of the better one shot characters in Scooby Doo and this episode was crafted very well, so yes, very unpopular opinion. 9/11/2023 03:43:44 pm
28. I will say that it's grown on me over the years. I like them traveling through the comic section, but I was never big on Demondo as a ghost which is the main reason why it's not as strong as the others for me. Still, it's a good episode.

It is very interesting to see differing opinions on this episode. I think once I have more time, maybe later this week, I am going to binge watch 13 Ghosts again. It is something I have been meaning to do, and the discourse here is enough to make me want to finally do it

I won’t even lie, I would’ve thought I would be the only one with Ghouliest Show On Earth at first, glad to see otherwise 9/12/2023 10:27:06 pm
It's always been one of my favorite episodes of the series since I first saw it (fun fact: it was actually the first full episode of the series I ever saw). I might have ranked "That's Monstertainment" and "Scoobra Kadoobra" above it at other times, but it's only continued to grow on me. Even though those other two are still amazing, "The Ghouliest Show on Earth" is easily the strongest episode of the series. I'll be interested to see your list after you rewatch the series!

Just not a favourite of mine. Personally it makes no sense, if the chest is supposed to release the ghosts when opened, why did it release just one massive one and not the ones already caught? The whole episode identifies instantly what went wrong with this series. So many things they said in the first episode don't seem to carry on throughout the series. This episode could have been a great way to extend the season further and give more screen time to some epic villains like Zomba and Maldor but instead it just felt like a lazy mid-season retcon mess in my eyes. 9/13/2023 08:33:27 am
My understanding was that the ones already caught combined to make that massive demon, although that's just a guess as it's not made clear in the episode. I agree that it would have been cooler for the gang to have to deal with some of the ghosts they already caught, and I also agree that continuity was a mess in this series. The whole premise of the first episode is that Weerd and Bogel have to get Shaggy and Scooby to open the chest since only the living can open it. However, Zomba, Time Slime and Zimbulu's whole plans were based around stealing the chest so they could open it, which makes no sense if you go by the first episode which makes it clear that ghosts can't open the chest.

Watched 3 episodes last night (oddly enough, I think the ordering of episodes is wrong on the Boomerang app, gonna try and go with the real order from here on out) and here is my ranking so far 9/13/2023 02:08:06 pm
I'm not sure where Boomerang came up with the order they have, but that's the way they air it on the TV network as well. I remember it from when I first saw the episodes in 2009. Oddly, they'd also cut off the intro to "When You Witch Upon a Star" as well so we don't see the dinner party or Vincent's explanation of the witches.

It was strange that they had episodes where only Velma or Fred was in, but not both. I liked the Ghost of Sherlock Holmes quite a bit as well, and it was a fun plot of having the gang be framed. I agree the culprit was pretty easy to guess.

40. Lol, I'm glad to see somebody else hates that moment as much as I do. I ranked it a bit higher in my list because I do like the atmosphere and plot of the rest of the episode, even if the ending was close to "South Seas Scare"-level in terms of being a terribly-written cop out. Rankor's design and the episode's atmosphere as a whole was otherwise excellent, so it's frustrating how bad they messed up his characterization in a number of parts of the episode.
Matt
9/10/2023 10:16:44 pm
40. Honestly, I like the South Seas Scare copout better than this one. For a few reasons really. For starters, there was less going for that episode anyway, so there wasn't anything to really ruin. If anything, such a ridiculous ending to the episode made it have more going for it, as the Scrappy shorts I enjoy are when they are so ridiculous they turn to madness. And in turn, as for this episode, as you said, it had a lot of stuff going for it but they just fumbled it so badly it becomes frustrating. Also, the South Seas Scare thing is just funnier to me, whereas this ending just annoys me and makes me cringe 9/11/2023 08:41:30 am
40. In hindsight, "Coast to Ghost" probably is a worse ending than this one. I do like the premise (or at least what it could have been) of this episode better, but "South Seas Scare" is definitely far more hilarious for the ridiculous cop-out ending, I'll give it that lol.

40. I feel like if it weren’t for the ending, South Seas Scare would’ve been one of the most forgettable and boring of the Scrappy shorts, but that ending alone makes it very memorable for the series, even if as a meme

I don't think anything could beat the first roster with how many classics were there. The 90s will probably be the weakest set, since it will be considerably smaller than this one, and I assume Witch's Ghost is just going to win by default, since the other options are nowhere close to that one on a quality level IMO.

The premise of this episode was good, and Rankor was set up to be an amazing villain at the beginning. However, like I mentioned in response to Matt's comment above, I thought him willingly going into the demon chest was dumb. The episode had a lot of potential, but it would have been much better the plot was just Rankor trying to turn Vincent to stone as revenge, rather than having his motivation be to get into SAPS. That piece has never really made sense to me, since he's one of the most powerful ghosts in the world so it's very odd he'd want to get into a low-level demon club like SAPS imo.
