Before I dive into the poll results for Be Cool, since we're on the last series, I wanted to give a preview of all our June polls, which will conclude the "best setting" poll series. I plan to skip Velma (and not just because the majority of people would prefer to forget the series' existence lol). Velma is just the same settings of the school, the gang's houses, and a few places around town in every episode, so it doesn't seem worthwhile to rank those settings since for the most part, the episodes don't have different settings.
That being said, we are also going to be including the non-series Scooby media in this poll series. We'll do the Scooby crossovers that are a part of other shows (i.e. Dynomutt, Johnny Bravo, etc.) on June 4, the specials on June 11, followed by the movies on June 18. On June 25, we will do our Winner's Circle poll! All of the winning options from each of the series will be pitted against each other to determine the best setting in the Scooby-Doo franchise. Here are the results for last week's poll. While we had a few options close together at the top, we had a very clear winner nearly from the start. Doo Not Disturb - 14 Mystery 101 - 5 Party Like It's 1899 - 5 Where There's a Will, There's a Wraith - 5 If You Can't Scooby-Doo the Time, Don't Scooby-Doo the Crime - 4 Be Quiet, Scooby-Doo! - 4 Some Fred Time - 3 Night of the Upsetting Shorts - 3 In Space - 3 Area 51 Adjacent - 2 Saga of the Swamp Beast - 2 There Wolf - 2 Pizza O'Possum's - 2 Poodle Justice - 1 Gremlin on a Plane - 1 Sorcerer Snacks Scare - 1 Into the Mouth of Madcap - 1 The People vs. Fred Jones - 1 How to Train Your Coward - 1 Mysteries on the Disorient Express - 1 Scroogey Doo - 1 American Goth - 1 The Curse of Half-Beard's Booty - 1 Professor Huh? Part 6 ¾ - 1 0 votes: Game of Chicken, All Paws on Deck, Grand Scam, Trading Chases, Screama Donna, Kitchen Frightmare, Me Myself and AI, Scary Christmas, Be Cold Scooby-Doo, Giant Problems, Eating Crow, I Scooby Dooby Do, El Bandito, The Norse Case Scenario, Renn Scare, Worst in Show, Halloween, The Curse of Kaniaku, Vote Velma, Silver Scream, Fright of Hand, Greece Is the Word, Omelettes Are Forever, Ghost in the Mystery Machine, Naughty or Ice, Junkyard Dogs, Protein Titans 2, World of Witchcraft, and Professor Huh? While it isn't my favorite of the series, I agree with you that it's a very strong one!

Won't lie, struggled with this one. It's not a series I overly enjoy or give much thought about, so went with the first one that stuck out for me. To the time restriction they had to solve the mystery was extremely well worked and it was certainly one of the better episodes of the series. 5/29/2023 04:33:03 pm
Same for me, many of the settings in this series are just mediocre compared to other Scooby shows. "The Legend of the Gold Microphone!" has always been a standout for me because I felt like they did a great job creating a very creepy atmosphere even within the time restriction of having to solve the mystery and introduce the guest star. It's a toss-up between "The Legend of the Gold Microphone!" and "I Put a Hex on You!" for my favorite episode of this series, although I'd probably go for the latter.

Personally they are all rather mediocre for me and I probably won't watch again or if I do, skip a load I really don't like. These episodes for me are like the new Scrappy shorts of the 80s. If I had to to say my top 3, my original list was Haunt of a thousand voices, Fashion Nightmare and Dark Diner. 5/30/2023 07:22:05 am
I wouldn't say I find them as boring as the Scrappy shorts, but they're definitely a pretty big step down from SDMI and Be Cool. If I rewatched these, I would probably skip a bunch as well. I think the only time I've rewatched them thus far is to watch some of the winter-themed episodes around the holidays.

I personally find this series far worse as a whole than the Scrappy shorts 5/30/2023 12:21:16 pm
I haven't rewatched the series other than select episodes, but my opinion also soured a bit on certain episodes. There are some episodes I'd rewatch, I really liked my top 10 episodes of this series and I may watch some of the winter ones in future years around the holidays. There are many episodes in this series I don't have any desire to rewatch anytime soon, though. And yeah, as we've discussed, the playground taunt theme song is awful lol. Hopefully we don't get a series that plays it this safe again. If there's anything to be learned from this series, at least in my opinion, it's that at least some level of creative risk is a good thing for the franchise.

I 100% agree with Matt, except that I had the misfortune of watching all of Velma, and it's way worse than Guess Who, which says a lot.

@Wildwind: Honestly, I really WISH some of these episodes had lasting power with me. I really loved Haunt of a Thousand Voices the first time I saw it, and in hindsight, it just did not stick with me at all and I find it extremely mediocre nowadays. It is quite a comparison with Be Cool. Both series were ones that I was kind of in the middle on my opinion on them at first, yet Be Cool has aged wonderfully into a show I really really like where Guess Who has only gotten worse into a show I really do not like at all 5/30/2023 08:42:11 pm
I hate to say it because I really love that they got all the voice actors for an episode, but that one wore on me as well over time. It would have been better had they not used such a basic haunted house plot with recycled monsters. It's by no means a bad episode though and I did enjoy it for what it was, but I think it could have been a little stronger. I liked Be Cool from the beginning, so my opinion hasn't changed on that one.

@Becker Velma was horrific but at least it had an intriguing mystery under everything rather than just being 20 minute ads for mostly B list celebrities.

@Matt, calling Velma cynical is generous tbh, it's on a whole different level. 5/31/2023 03:22:49 pm
I definitely wouldn't call Velma soulless either. If anything, it has too much of a rebellious soul, as it completely changes the characters into something they're not, and mocks the audience throughout the show (i.e. there's a scene where Velma says that 420 means "adults watching cartoons in their parents basement," which is essentially making fun of the audience and saying they're all burnout stoners living with their parents).

And that's probably one of the lightest insults in Velma lol 6/1/2023 02:06:59 pm
Sadly yes lol, stuff like Scooby's skeleton being shown buried underground is much worse. I'd argue the worst insult of the series is the fact that such a horrendous show even exists haha.

@Wildwind: I guess you would know better than me because you’ve actually seen it, but I don’t think mean-spirited and soulless are mutually exclusive 6/2/2023 11:11:49 am
That's fair, I tend to think of "soulless" as not having an identity/being generic like Guess Who, but I suppose Velma is also soulless in terms of its really bad take on social/political commentaries, and the fact that it's just a bad take on the franchise in general.

Maybe heartless would be a word we can all agree on because it just doesn’t seem like the show has any kind of heart put into it, at least from what I know

Legend of the Gold Microphone for the different music genre rap/hip hop, the atmospheric dark setting, and the super spooky villains.

Honestly, just hard pass on ranking this one. To show what that is worth, I even was willing to rank the Scrappy shorts, so that tells you a lot about what I think about this

I'll still rank these but I agree these are not nearly as strong as most of the other series, especially SDMI and Be Cool which had tons of amazing settings. I'll use the same ranking system as I normally do, although the "greats" of this series would probably just be "good" in another series. The Nashville setting was actually one of my least favorites of the show; it was kind of a weaker episode in general which is a shame because I really like Kacey Musgraves and was excited for her episode, but her performance felt flat to me.

Sorry but I have to partly disagree with your last two rank lists. 5/28/2023 07:54:33 pm
You're more than welcome to disagree with my rankings and that's totally fine. The world would be boring if we all thought the same way, so there's nothing wrong with having different opinions. I personally didn't love any of the settings in my "meh" or "bad" list, but it's great that you enjoy them!

Movieland Monsters for me! The worst to me is Total Jeopardy. That is because I've been a huge Jeopardy fan since I was three and this episode completely failed to capitalize on the show"s trappings and unique qualities.

The Movieland Monsters one was a fun one. "Total Jeopardy!" was among my favorite episodes and settings of the show, but I have not watched much Jeopardy, so I didn't realize that they didn't really capture the essence of the show. "The Scooby of a Thousand Faces!" is one of my least favorite settings of the show, but I also like the episode.

I wasn't as bothered by it as you were, but I agree the execution of the plot they were trying to do was a bit weird at points, particularly Scooby's "boys' locker room, girls' locker room" comment which was offputting and felt forced in.

I think I've gone off on that episode enough in the past but simply put, but all got from that episode was inequality is fine as long as women aren't the ones being treated unfairly. 5/31/2023 09:07:26 am
I don't remember the episode well enough to make an argument either way. I don't feel like I thought it was that bad or that that's what the episode was trying to preach, but it's been so long that I don't remember for sure. I remember thinking some aspects of the episode were cringey and forced in places, like Scooby's locker room comment I mentioned in my previous response.
