Here are the results from last week's poll. Surprisingly, it looks like "Hang in There, Scooby-Doo" just barely got edged out by the second live action film!
Which of the following episodes/films with a pterodactyl as one of the main villains?
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed - 36
Hang in There, Scooby-Doo - 34
Scary Christmas - 14
Scooby-Doo and the Sky Town Cool School! - 13

All of the camping episodes are good which makes it hard to pick just one. In the end, I’ll go with Camp Scare because of how dark it was compared to the others.

I had a hard time choosing between Camp Scare and "The Caped Crusader Caper," but I ended up choosing Camp Scare for its dark tone. I really do like gentlemanly Batman in "The Caped Crusader Caper" though lol.

Speaking of that Batman WildwindVampire...I do wonder why he wasn’t used in Guess Who rather than the modern Batman. For a show that’s trying to be retro having a continuation of the 60’s Batman would’ve been ideal for that show and they could’ve even continued the storyline like they did with the Cher and Sandy Duncan episodes. Just a thought that popped in my head he he.

I was kind of wondering that too. 60s Batman would have made a ton more sense, especially given they already met him twice in The New Scooby-Doo Movies, Guess Who is a sequel in spirit too. I've not watched a lot of old 60's Batman stuff, but I know the one is Scooby was a lot more polite and gentlemanly than the one in the actual 60s cartoons haha.

Actually, Olan Soule, who played Batman and the great Casey Kasem played Robin in the two Scooby-Doo crossovers also played the Dynamic Duo in The Adventures of Batman in the Batman/Superman Hour in 1968. Both men reprised the roles in all but one season of The Super Friends.

That one season, Kasem returned as Robin while Soule was replaced by live action Batman star, Adam West.

Adam West also played Batman in 1977's animated The New Adventures of Batman, which also saw the return of Burt Ward to the role of Robin. It's notable for their return to the roles that made them famous and for the inclusion of Bat-Mite. The 1968 Soule/Kasem show didn't include him.

When I was building my DC Comics DVD collection, I spent a LOT of time untangling all that. It didn't help that the Super Friends series went by a different title pretty much every year of its ten year life.

The point of all that is that I'd have to disagree with you that the Batman in "Scooby was a lot more polite and gentlemanly than the one in the actual 60s cartoons".

My bet is that you're remembering seeing the Adam West/Burt Ward cartoons, not Olan Soule and Casey Kasem from 1968. As a kid I watched both and my memories were pretty muddled until I got all the shows on DVD and rewatched everything as an adult.

Check out Soule and Kasem in the 1968 cartoons and you'll see they brought the exact same spirit to The New Scooby-Doo Movies.

Yes, I'm definitely thinking of the Adam West and Burt Ward cartoons. I honestly had no idea that there was a full series of Olan Soule and Casey Kasem, but that's super cool. Thanks so much for letting me know about those! I absolutely need to get on buying those DVDs then, because I've always wanted more "gentlemanly Batman" content haha.

The series set runs about $20-25 USD on e-bay at the moment.

Just be careful you pick up "The Adventures of Batman" which is the Olan Soule series. "The New Adventures of Batman" is the Adam West series.

It might have been a golden age of animation, but it wasn't the golden age of creative show names.

Thank you! I'll be sure to pick up The Adventures of Batman DVD and not the New Adventures one then haha. It seems like TV shows did that a lot back then, even down to The Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show in 1979 and The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show in 1983.

I didn't even look at the other options and immediately went for Camp Scare. "Caped Crusader" is good, but it isn't really based off camping. Camp Scare has always been a favourite with it's atmosphere and dark tone. It's in my Top 5 Scooby Movies.

Yah some of these episodes had the gang in going camping but they weren’t heavily settled on camping.

You're correct, I just wanted to include all the possible options to be as thorough as possible, in case anyone did want to pick some of the ones that include camping but the plot isn't heavily based around it.

Camp. Scare.

I was a little sad to see a classic like Hang in there Scooby Doo lose to that movie but I guess it’s just matter of opinions

I was also sad about that lol. I feel like "Hang in There Scooby-Doo" should have won, especially given the live action movie's pterodactyl was based off of that one!

Absolutely

Of course, I am also just way lower on that movie than just about anyone. I can’t stand it as opposed to the first one which is ok. Probably one of my more unpopular opinions of the franchise

5/30/2021 11:27:15 pm

I honestly enjoy the second live action film for what it is, even though it's not perfect. I'd say I even like it a little better than the first live action. Do you like the first live action?

Matt
5/30/2021 11:45:21 pm

It's ok. I felt like the fart humor was far worse in the second one and the Scrappy twist actually made me chuckle even though it would make me ANGRY in an actual show. The humor works better for me in the first one. Second one was just bad all around imo. Cyber Chase did the returning ghosts way better

WildwindVampire link
5/30/2021 11:47:55 pm

I think I would have been more accepting of the Scrappy twist had it not led to 19+ years of "Haha Scrappy sucks!" type jokes. If it were a one-off, I could have dealt with it, but it created this whole chain reaction where the character can't even be brought up without ridiculing him which is a bit too much IMO. Agreed Cyber Chase did it better though.

@Matt, I actually like Scooby Doo 2, even if in more of an ironic way than a genuine one. Monsters Unleashed is honestly the only live-action movie I mostly enjoy. I don't really like the first live-action movie, there's something odd and strange about it, besides the Scrappy stuff. I don't hate it (besides what they did to Scrappy), but I don't like it.
However I 100% agree that Hang in There Scooby-Doo should have won the poll, it's way better than Scooby-Doo 2, even as a fan of that movie.
And Camp Scare has gotta be the winner of this poll though.

@Wildwind, yeah, had the first film not ruined Scrappy for decades, I might have kinda enjoyed it. I like to think that the rumors about WB now testing the waters with Scrappy merch and stuff to see if they can bring him back in the franchise for a movie or episode once in a while, without berating him, and it all depends on how the merch and stuff is received. Scrappy desperately needs some redemption after so long, after what the horrible and shameful villainization in Scooby-Doo 2002.

WildwindVampire link
5/31/2021 09:31:03 am

I'd be incredibly surprised if Camp Scare didn't win!

I totally agree we need to have Scrappy be redeemed, it's long overdue given the first live action film came out nearly 20 years ago and they've been berating him every sense. I really hope that's what WB is doing with all the Scrappy merch!

Matt
5/31/2021 11:35:32 am

The thing is, the Scrappy hate train started before that movie though. Cartoon Network was really what started it.

I don’t really like the first movie but I don’t hate it either. The second one I just detested though. But it does seem to be a more popular opinion to like the second one over the first one so I guess it’s just me. Neither compare to Hang in there Scooby Doo though. Although it probably has to do with the fact that some younger visitors probably haven’t seen some of the classic Scooby Doo series and we can only blame Cartoon Network and the empty shell that was formerly and is still called Boomerang for that

WildwindVampire link
5/31/2021 07:42:17 pm

Good point. I forget sometimes that they made fun of him in the commercial shorts (and I guess The Scooby-Doo Project too).

Yeah, there's definitely a wide variety of ages on this site so it would make sense that people might not have seen Hang in There. I wish Boomerang and Cartoon Network would air the old episodes again like they used to (and just Scooby in general). Boomerang sadly seems to be considering "classic cartoons" ones made in the 2000s or even the 2010s now.

Matt
5/31/2021 09:01:05 pm

I try to understand business decisions, but Boomerang's decisions on what shows to show just baffle me. It seems like a lose/lose for both the classic fans and the viewer statistics. I just don't see why anyone would watch Boomerang if it is just the less popular Cartoon Network series. I think they should show mostly old stuff (a few 2000s or 2010s show is ok but not too many) on Boomerang and use some of the time Cartoon Network's about 5 main series they show (Teen Titans Go, Total Drama Rama, Gumball, etc.) to show some more modern throwbacks if they want to show those

WildwindVampire link
5/31/2021 10:50:30 pm

Many of WB's decisions just baffle me in general. Boomerang becoming "less popular Cartoon Network" doesn't make any sense to me either and I can't imagine their ratings are very good. I'd also be okay with a few 2000s/2010s series, but not nearly as many as they have. I haven't talked to anyone who says they like the current Boomerang, everyone's opinion seems to be that it was best when they were showing actual classic cartoons. I have no idea why they seem to be sticking with this strange "less popular CN" format.

Matt

Maybe they think there’s not a market for it but I promise that there is more of a market for The Jetsons and The Flintstones than modern Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry ripoffs and some Wizard of Oz show (?). To be fair they do play classic Looney Tunes, classic Tom and Jerry, and Scooby Doo Where are You constantly, but they used to go beyond their big 3

At the VERY least, after looking up their schedule right now, they mostly seem to be playing the very original and modern versions of Scooby Doo (A Pup and beyond except Get a Clue), Tom and Jerry, and Looney Tunes so that is better than a lot of Cartoon Network leftovers but they need some more variety I think. However, that is an improvement I guess

WildwindVampire link
6/1/2021 10:30:02 am

Interesting, and yeah it's hard to believe they wouldn't see Flintstones as having more of a market than some random Wizard of Oz spinoff haha. I haven't looked at Boomerang's schedule in a while, but it's good to know they're at least playing some classic Scooby!

My top 3 are:
3) Haunted House Hang-up
2) Bravo Dooby Doo
1) Hassle in the Castle
My fifth favorite is Never Ape an Ape Man. I have never understood why it isn't a very well liked episode.

That's a great list! A little surprised to see Bravo Dooby Doo so high up, but it's definitely a great episode! With "Never Ape an Ape Man," I enjoy the episode but I wouldn't say it's among my favorites of the franchise. The ape man was a little dull for me as a villain personally, but I by no means hate the episode.

I enjoy Never Ape an Ape Man but I do see it as one of the weakest episodes of the original series. But certainly a good episode
