Weekly Poll #44.4

For our last daily poll, it's five questions in one! It was a bit hard to divide the gang's characterizations up into different categories, because there are so many tiny differences in their characterizations between series, but I think I divided it up into reasonable categories reflecting the big differences in everyone's personalities. I apologize if I did not include any categories that people consider 'major' differences; these are just simply my opinions of how the characterizations differ. I'll post the results tomorrow morning!

Mf favorite Shaggy, Scooby, and Velma are classic. However, I did really like Be Cool Velma.
Fred and Velma are say their best to me in Be Cool Format. However, there is something engaging about Fred as a one tone personally free leader in WAY. Also, Fred was very entertaining in Happy Birthday Scooby Doo.
Daphne has seen a lot of changes over the years. Though Be Cool has my favorite incarnation of her character, pre Heather North WAY's Stefanianna Christopher son gives the best vocal delivery and What's New Daphne provides the best balance of the different aspects of her character.

I'd say all of my favorites match yours - classic Shaggy, Velma and Scooby, while Be Cool Fred wins for me since it's the perfect combo of serious and silly. Quirky Daphne from BCSD is my fave hands down.

Here we go!

Classic Scooby. How can you go wrong with him? And is there really much of a difference in Guess Who? I can see A Pup (more childish), Mystery Incorporated (more "drama queeny" lol) and Be Cool (more witty), but that one not quite, besides the no speech impediment. It's the closest Classic Scooby since What's New era. Even Get A Clue was more different than Guess Who. Anyway, Scooby is always likable, no matter what you do with him, even in that little bit in SDMI with that kind of romantic triangle but not really. I like there's not even a Revival Scooby choice, cuz he's basically the same. The modern DTVs Scooby is very close to Guess Who actually.

Classic Shaggy. Though, out of all these characters, Shaggy's been the most similar and consistent throughout the whole franchise. All of the Shaggy choices there are very much almost the same with very few and minor changes. Revival DTV Shaggy is pretty much exactly like Classic Shaggy, he's not changed at all, even though he's a few years older, and I love him just as much. Also, to me 2000s Kasem Shaggy is honestly still Classic Shaggy, besides the slightly older voice, just cuz of Kasem's age, and the fact that it's just a tiny bit more obvious with the vegetarianism, I really cannot see how he's a different category. Lillard Shaggy is also really similar, except he's just a bit more frantic and kooky I guess. A Pup is more kiddy, obviously, but still very much just Shaggy. If I was to say what's the most different Shaggy from all of them, it would actually be Get A Clue Shaggy, surprised it wasn't on there.

What's New Velma. She's always been the most fun, entertaining and, honestly, relatable Velma. Revival Velma is also great, she's the kindest and most understanding Velma. Obviously Classic and Pat Stevens Velma are great, she's very quotable and I love her banter and smartassness, and again not really different. Young and Be Cool Velma are very good, more reclusive and timid that the other ones, but it's a nice characterization, and she's still a smartass like always lmao. SDMI Velma mostly leaves a bad taste in my mouth, she was the worst in that show. But Skeptic Velma is even worse... she's the absolute worst. We'd rather just pretend it didn't happen, and hopefully Happy Halloween is her transition out of it.

Be Cool Fred. I like serious, dimwitted and young Fred, but Be Cool pretty much combines the best of all 3. Classic serious Fred can be a little boring sometimes, but I've never been someone who doesn't like him, he's had a very good amount of memorable moments/scenes and laughs actually. Dimwitted Fred is tricky, cuz I love him in Revival and What's New eras, and some of the modern DTVs. But I'm not really a fan of him in SDMI and some of the modern DTVs, SDMI could even get a bit depressing to watch him lol, he's so crazy and kinda psychotic, in some scenario he'd snap and kill everyone, but it makes interested in wtf is going on with him I guess lmao. And Guess Who is ok. A Pup is just so silly I love it.

Mature Daphne. This one was the hardest. I really like Classic Daphne, sometimes she's a bit bland, but always nice. 80s Daphne is very cool and more fun in some aspects. Young Daphne is like the opposite of her, but it works. What's New Daphne is more sassy than regular, and it's a great addition. SDMI is probably my least favorite, cuz she seems too needy, jealous and angsty. Be Cool Daphne is one of the best, she's the funniest and goofiest and I'd like to see her continue honestly, glad it seems to with Happy Halloween. However I decided to go with Mature Daphne, she's very genuine, likable, empathetic, down-to-earth while still a bit kooky. She's awesome.

Eh, I put Classic and Guess Who Scooby as being different because Scooby's lines are much longer and he talks in paragraphs, but that could just be me overemphasizing it because it bugs me personally haha.

And shoot, yeah. Get A Clue Shaggy probably should have been a category. I'm going to add that now and people can re-vote if they want (if you vote for that and your IP address already voted for something else, I'll delete the old vote and go with this one). What's New Shaggy is not much of a difference, but I thought the vegetarianism and the voice was enough to warrant a different category IMO.

I love What's New Velma too! It's really hard to pick for some of these. I hate know it all Velma and I can't believe two people have already voted for her, but I hope Happy Halloween marks the end of that story arc. I can't imagine too many people want to see that awful characterization of her again.

Be Cool Fred really is the best of both worlds. As you said, it combines all three previous versions of him (other than SDMI Fred) and puts the best parts of his personality together.

I also had a really hard time picking between Be Cool and Mature Daphne, because they're both amazing, but in the end I picked Quirky Daphne because I think it provides a great lesson for people of all ages (be it kids or adults) of the importance of being yourself even if that means being quirky and strange at times.

Yeah, I guess the fact that Scooby occasionally has longer lines in Guess Who is the biggest difference. The only one that really stands out to me is in the Wonder Woman episode. I think he overall talks less in Guess Who than in Mystery Incorporated or Be Cool though.

Yes, Get A Clue Shaggy is definitely the most different Shaggy. For a while I don't think I even noticed Kasem's slightly older voice as Shaggy, there's not much he could do about it though, it's not like it was intentional, and I don't think his 2000s Shaggy sounds so different from the pre-millennium Kasem Shaggy as much as I've seen some people make it out as. And the vegetarianism stuff is only noticeable if you pay close attention throughout the whole series, they never even mention Shaggy is vegetarian in the What's New show and films or draw attention to it.

I think those 2 votes were just as a joke lol. Yeah, it seems like Happy Halloween has made the transition for know-it-all Velma to something at least tolerable, classic-like and not annoying. When we thought SDMI was the worst you could do with Velma, we weren't ready for 2019.

SDMI Fred is like next level dimwitted Fred. Didn't really like him, but I didn't hate him. Be Cool actually kinda combined stuff from SDMI Fred too, with the sometimes psychotic outbursts (but in a funny way) and random and weird quirks, even like the Mystery Machine somewhat.

Be Cool Daphne is the funniest and most entertaining one, but occasionally it can get a bit too weird, like the beard episode. That was not so great. So I feel like Happy Halloween being a bit more toned down is a good thing. Be Cool has higher highs than Revival Daphne, but she also has lower lows than her. Revival Daphne is more consistent and never had that moment of off-puttingness for me, that's why I went with her.

Hmmm..I guess so. The Wonder Woman episode felt like he didn't shut up haha.

And yeah, there's nothing Kasem could do about his older sounding voice.

It was actually 4 votes haha! I hope they were a joke lol, but maybe some people actually like them...

I feel the same way about SDMI...not hate, just indifferent. I really liked BCSD Fred, so I wish he would have gotten more votes!

Thanks for the info! I don't trust CBR anymore after they claimed the 2nd half of the first season would start February 27 and then it never did, and they didn't ever correct their mistake...but it's cool we got another clip!

Why didn't you include red shirt shaggy in the poll

He didn't really have a different personality in 13 Ghosts, he just wore a different shirt.

I don't think he really had a different personality in that either. Do you feel like he did?

Red shirt Shaggy is the same as green shirt Shaggy. Just different colored clothes, which, while I really like, I'm not sure why exactly they did it during that time period. Not sure if someone ever confirmed why, did they?

WildwindVampire

No they didn't ever confirm why. I kinda had the same perspective as Becker, that red shirt and green shirt Shaggy were essentially the same with some minor differences.

I went with Classic Scooby (1969-2009), Lillard's Shaggy (2010-present), What's New Velma (2002-2009), Dimwitted Fred (1998-present), Fashion-Oriented Daphne (2002-2009, DTVs).

I went pretty much classic guys and modern girls. The quirky Daphne is awesome and I like the Kate Miccucci voice and modern writing for Velma as well.

Considering that most of the writing was originally male dominated, it's not really surprising that the guys in the classic era hold up while the girls fare better as characters these days.

And yet again your comment was somehow marked as spam, yet the person pretending to be Gigi Hadid posting gibberish letters wasn't marked as spam. Sorry about that! And I absolutely agree about the writing being male-dominated in those days, so the girls were a bit more watered down in their classic versions.

I can see what Amber means about Red Shirt Shaggy from the movies. He is a little more up tight, quicker to get annoyed, and braver as well but it's not a drastic difference.

Yeah and I only noitice these in boo brothers and the reluctant werewolf but not in ghoul school (quickly to get annoyed in boo brothers and braver in reluctant werewolf )

Those are very small changes that don't warrant a different category. Shaggy is still almost exactly the same.

I can see why you would think it was different, but my opinion was similar to Becker's when writing this poll and that's why I didn't include a separate category.

I can see why this is the last one. This is hard!
I don't know which Scooby I liked because Scooby seems to be the only character to remain the same, except in Mystery Incorporated, Be Cool and Guess Who when he talked a lot more.

For Shaggy, I like his Classic, but you gotta love Lillards too. But I really want to see Red shirt Shaggy again. He seemed braver with the red shirt lol. But other than that, his character stayed consisted through the years too.

Velma, I like Classic Velma and What's New Velma. I also liked the DTV revival Velma because, for example Zombie Island, when they found out the zombies were real, she accepted it. But then years later, Skeptic Velma tried to debunk what happened in 13 Ghosts and Zombie Island. She had no business saying anything about 13 Ghosts, because she wasn't there. But she was there to see the supernatural in Zombie Island.

For Fred, definitely his Be Cool version. He definitely seemed to be more balanced, even though sometimes he did get obsessed with being the leader of the group. I'm not gonna lie, I had no idea that Fred was the leader of the gang until Be Cool Scooby Doo lol. And I absolutely HATED Mystery Incorporated Fred. He just seemed more dim witted in that series,to me anyway.

And Daphne, definitely Quirky Daphne. The only other versions I liked was the Scrappy Era Daphne because she became the leader, and Mature Daphne. But Quirky Daphne is the only Daphne that made me interested in anything she did and made me laugh so....

I don't really care for Scooby speaking in super long sentences in Guess Who, personally. It seems out of character for him.

"But Quirky Daphne is the only Daphne that made me interested in anything she did and made me laugh so...." Absolutely agree with this sentiment 100%!

I basically just consider Red Shirt Shaggy to be Shaggy at the latest point in his life thus far. He has changed some in getting older. This is all preparing for an old get off my lawn type Shaggy. Red Shirt Shaggy is just green shirt Shaggy in character development.
