Weekly Poll #340

So that there's a clear definition of what qualifies, "comedy actors" like Don Knotts are included in the actors round. Also worth noting is that while I am keeping guest star duos in the same episode together, "Too Many Dummies!" is a weird instance where Jeff Dunham is most known for being a comedian, but he's paired with Darci Lynn Farmer, a ventriloquist. I separated Jeff because it felt like he should be included in this round. Darci will appear in a "miscellaneous" round of guest stars that didn't fit into any category that we do before the final round.

The Globetrotters win last week's poll in a landslide! They advance to the final round next month. Here are the full results for last week's poll:

Who is your favorite athlete to guest star in Scooby-Doo?
Harlem Globetrotters - 40
WWE - 8
Tara Lipinski - 3
Ryan Sheckler - 2
Chloe Kim - 2
Teddy Bradshaw - 2
Laila Ali - 1
Chris Klug - 0
Mike Piazza - 0
Brett Hull - 0
Chris Paul - 0

13. Ricky Gervais - Many Guess Who episodes grew on me for last week's rewatch article, but this one remained just as bad as ever. I find Ricky's humor style really obnoxious, and it overshadowed the entire episode. Him humming the Where Are You theme mockingly as he locks the gang out of his apartment was kinda unhinged lol.

12. Kenan Thompson - This is another one that doesn't work for me. Most of Kenan's jokes fall flat imo.

11. Jeff Dunham - I watched this pretty recently, and I still remember almost nothing about anything Jeff did in the episode lol. I think he is a very unmemorable guest star, and doesn't feel like he has much of a role here.

10. Jim Gaffigan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_7DMk3oeOE Jim worked a bit better for me on this recent rewatch. I think I wasn't expecting him to be an antagonist to the gang the first time, which was why this was one of my least faves. However, it still felt like the writers didn't understand his comedy. Some of his jokes were mildly amusing, but his presence overall felt pretty stiff.

9. Jeff Foxworthy - When I did my rewatch, I counted the number of times he said "country boy." The answer was 12 I think, so not as many times as I was thinking it was going to be, but it was still too much lol. Overall I think he was a good guest star that had nice chemistry with Shaggy and Scooby, but they leaned a bit much into the country stereotypes imo. (Worth noting that I know nothing about him beyond this episode, so maybe that's just his personality)

8. Wanda Sykes - I think she was a pretty good guest star. I like Wanda and think she overall did a good job, but nothing super memorable.

7. The Three Stooges - As mentioned in the duos/trios poll a few weeks back, I think they have the least chemistry with the gang of The New Scooby-Doo Movies guest stars. They feel a bit disconnected and just kinda do their own thing in both episodes they're in.

6. Whoopi Goldberg - Whoopi was a great guest star! Her interactions with Scooby were very cute.

5. Sonny and Cher - The top 5 is really tough to choose between! All of the remaining guest stars are iconic. Sonny and Cher would be higher in most polls, but they don't particularly stand out for their comedy to me. Since they were also in the singers poll, I'm giving the edge to some of the other guest stars.

4. Laurel and Hardy - I think Laurel and Hardy are amongst the greatest Scooby guest stars. They fit so well into their episode and have great chemistry with the gang.

3. Phyllis Diller - Very close between this and #5 for me. Love how charismatic Phyllis is! Even if she has more limited scenes with the gang than some other guest stars, I think she still had very good chemistry with them.

2. Jonathan Winters - Jonathan stands out as being one of the all-time best Scooby-Doo guest stars imo. He fits super well into the context of his episode, and his chemistry with Shaggy and Scooby is very strong.

1. Tim Conway - It was a tough pick, but Tim gets my vote for this week for being a superb guest star on pretty much every metric. He is very funny, he seems super into his role, and has incredible chemistry with Shaggy and Scooby. I would argue he is up there with Meadowlark and Curly as having the strongest chemistry with those two out of any guest in the franchise.

Tim Conway is taking this one for me but it was close between him, Laurel and Hardy and Jonathan Winters. Side note, but it confused me so much when I first learned as a kid that Laurel and Hardy were both long dead by the time that NSDMo episode came out.

13. Ricky Gervais- Truly awful guest star. I'm sure there is an audience for his brand of comedy, but it is not me and I don't Scooby Doo works well as the place for it

12. Jeff Dunham- As I said in a previous poll, it took me a while to even remember who the hell this guy was in that poll. Granted, I am not much of a comedian fan, but I think that goes to show how little impact he left here

11. Jeff Foxworthy- Beyond the bottom 2, I am ranking the rest of the Guess Who guest stars with clouded memory. These could really change if I actually wanted to do a rewatch

10. Kenan Thompson- I am more familiar with SNL than stand up comedians so I was certainly more familiar with Kenan Thompson than most of these people outside of the episodes. Unfortunately, he still didn't leave much of an impression on me

9. Jim Gaffigan- I don't like this episode, but I was always surprised that this episode seemed to be so hated compared to other episodes because I would probably put it in the top half of Guess Who episodes if I were forced to rank them. Granted, as someone who has little interest in stand up comedians, I can't agree or disagree with Wildwind saying that they didn't do a good job with his style of comedy because I don't know

8. Wanda Sykes- I guess

7. Whoopi Goldberg- Probably the most memorable for me out of the Guess Who ones, time to move past these now

6. The Three Stooges- It is interesting because the Stooges are probably the ones I am the most familiar with outside of Scooby Doo, and I have no issue with them, but it is just not the best fit imo. It probably would've helped if Curly himself was still around rather than having Curly Joe here, no offense to him. Still though, I like them as guest stars much better than any Guess Who option here

5. Phyllis Diller- The top five here are all fantastic guest stars. While Phyllis is, as Wildwind said, more limited in her interactions, she has a lot of charisma to make up for it and it worked. Kinda like how I loved Jerry Reed's appearance, I think she works really well here

4. Sonny and Cher- They are my second favorite here, but they didn't really come to mind as "comedians" even if they certainly count, so I'll go just a little lower than that

3. Tim Conway- Tim Conway is a riot in this episode, and I love his chemistry with the gang, particularly Shaggy and Scooby. Personally, I think there is one more here that is even better in that regard, but Tim is still a phenomenal guest star

2. Laurel and Hardy- They are a really large reason of why The Ghost of Bigfoot has gone down as an all time classic episode. They are definitely on the list of all time best guest stars

1. Jonathan Winters- But if we are looking at the list of all time best guest stars, Jonathan Winters only falls behind the Globetrotters for me. I think he has even better chemistry with Shaggy and Scooby than Tim Conway, which is a huge task. But even beyond that, while his scenes with the rest of the gang were more limited, I think he has great chemistry with them as well. He is the model example of how an amazing guest star doesn't have to be someone I know outside of Scooby Doo because this is literally all I know Jonathan Winters from and likely all I ever will know him from. And he is the greatest solo guest star of all time for me

1. Jonathan is one of my top guest stars of the franchise as well. My favorite solo guest star goes to Don Knotts (because how could I Knott lol), but I would say Jonathan is #2 for me. Tim Conway, Dick Van Dyke and Davy Jones are very close behind for me.
