Kicking off our Laff-A-Lympics Week (and Other Random Content) is our first team poll for this series! Not only will we be doing the three teams, but we'll also be doing an announcers poll featuring Snagglepuss, Mildew, the unseen announcer voice (Don Messick), and all of the guest commentators. Obviously, since this is a recurring characters poll series, Scooby and Shaggy don't count for this poll.

I was expecting the results for the Mystery Incorporated poll to be pretty close! However, Sheriff Stone easily pulls off the win for last week. He received nearly double the votes of any other option here. Here are the full results:

11. Hong Kong Phooey - Doesn't make much of an impression on me. He's barely in any competitions.

10. Tinker - Doesn't quite have the charisma of some of the other characters here.

9. Speed Buggy - He seems more enthusiastic in The New Scooby-Doo Movies, but he makes a pretty good character here too.

8. Brenda Chance - The Teen Angels are pretty much on the same level for me. Just ranking them based off of the slight personal preference I have between their personalities.

5. Babu - I find him a little annoying in "Mystery in Persia." That said, his zany brand of comedy works so well here! This type of series is a perfect fit for him.

4. Captain Caveman - One of the most memorable characters of this series. His personality works really well with the zany vibe.

3. Blue Falcon - Another character that really shines here. His personality works surprisingly well in the context of this series.

2. Dynomutt - His consistent blunders make for some great antics in this show. One of my favorites.

1. Scooby-Dum - I love Scooby-Dum in The Scooby-Doo Show, so it's awesome to see him get more appearances here. His personality is so much fun, and is a perfect fit with the vibe of this series imo.

This feels like cheating since Dum is actually a Scooby-Doo franchise character lol, but I'll still go with him.

I'm actually kinda glad he's in this poll, since it makes the polls more interesting than just advancing to the final round. I feel like he still will anyway, but I'll be curious to see the final results next week!

I wonder, since Dum automatically advances to the final round because he's the sole TSDS recurring character, what happens if he wins this poll too? Can't have two Dums haha. Does no one advance from the Scooby Doobies then technically?

When I'd said that originally, I hadn't planned on doing a Laff-A-Lympics poll. Similarly to how Mumsy and Dada Doo were grouped with 13 Ghosts (despite being in many series), this poll is Scooby-Dum's shot at getting to the final round. I think it makes it more interesting than him just advancing automatically. Happy to discuss further though if others feel differently, since I didn't think through that aspect clearly before starting this poll series haha.

11/10/9. Taffy Dare, Dee Dee Skyes, Brenda Chance- Honestly, I think the teen angels are incredibly uninteresting, so I am not the biggest fan. Rumor has it that Alexander, Alexandra, and Melody from Josie and the Pussycats were supposed to be on the team instead, but were replaced due to licensing complications. But if true, the Teen Angels were a clear downgrade, and we all lost lol

8. Tinker- I think what I found is that more so than any other team, the Scooby Doobies have a lot of underutilized characters in favor of the Scooby and Dynomutt characters especially. But Tinker is one of the people I forget is on the show more often than most other characters

7. Babu- He is still slightly annoying imo, but I guess he isn’t that bad. He adds more flavor than some of these other characters

6. Hong Kong Phooey- I wish Hong Kong Phooey was far more utilized than he is because he is otherwise one of the more interesting characters here in his original cartoon. Probably one of the bigger failures of the series. But, maybe it makes sense because rumor has it, he was also not originally on this team. Rather, Jeannie was supposed to be here instead but also had licensing issues (Babu was originally created by Hanna Barbera so there were no licensing issues there)

5. Speed Buggy- I would say the top four are far and above the rest here, but Speed Buggy is good enough here. Having a dune buggy may be a bit unfair of an advantage, but certainly not as unfair as having GRAPE APE

4. Captain Caveman- The top four are the more memorable ones here. I definitely prefer Captain Caveman to the Teen Angels, as his personality fits in with the show very well

3. Scooby Dum- Certainly going to run away with this poll on a SCOOBY DOO blog lol, but in terms of this series, he only gets third for me

2. Dynomutt- The top two are certainly two of the most relevant characters on any team here. They do a lot more heavy lifting than you’d probably remember and are constantly involved. His blunders add a lot of humor, but maybe not as much as…

1. Blue Falcon- I really wouldn’t expect a character like Blue Falcon to be number one in such a goofy series, but his sternness and seriousness really come back around into being really funny in this series surprisingly well

11/10/9. I'd forgotten about that! Jeannie is the character I always remember as the team member that didn't make it into the series. I think it would have been really interesting to have them here.

8. True, although the Yogis also have a lot imo. Cindy Bear, Yakky, Snooper and Blabber, Mr. Jinks, Hokey Wolf, and Pixie and Dixie all stand out to me as underutilized characters compared to Yogi, Boo Boo, Grape Ape, Quick Draw McGraw, and Huckleberry Hound, who feel like they're practically in a competition in every episode lol.

11/10/9. The other theory is that there was originally a fourth Flintstone team led by Pebbles and Bamm Bamm. Which is where some of the more puzzling omissions like Magilla Gorilla (who would have fit like a glove on the Yogis... certainly much more than Grape Ape) were supposed to be. Not sure how true that one is though

8. Yeah Yakky and Snooper and Blabber are definitely at the top of the list of forgotten contestants as well, even more so than the others imo

11/10/9. That's really interesting, I actually don't think I've ever heard about there being a fourth team. I feel like the show might get a bit too chaotic with more than three teams, but still would have been cool to see those characters included. It always bugged me as a kid that Magilla wasn't on the Yogis team. He would have been a perfect fit!

11/10/9. Yeah, I think four teams is too much as well. I have heard about this rumor a good few times, but I haven't seen anything that has me 100% convinced this was the case. The most consistent thing I have heard is that the 70s variation of Tom and Jerry were supposed to be on the team

The problem I discovered is that I believe those are some Smurfs on there, which that show was not on until the 80s, so that specific picture couldn't be the roster if that team was actually planned

To be honest I mostly remember captain caveman, blue falcon and dynomutt and of course scooby dum. It's a shame they didn't use Hong Kong Phooey more cause I loved the original series as a kid but I can live with that.

Anyway I guess I have to go with Dum on this one as the most memorable of them all

I feel the same way on all counts. I always wanted them to use Hong Kong Phooey more when I was younger. I'm a bit more indifferent to Hong Kong Phooey's inclusion now, since it kinda feels like he's reduced to a bit of a caricature in the events we do see him in. He has much more personality in his show (although I haven't seen it since I was a kid, so I may be remembering wrong).

It's so weird to me how he only appears in a couple episodes of the entire series. Strange they included him at all considering he's barely in the show.

I'm not a huge Scooby Doobies fan (everyone knows the Yogi Yahooeys are the ONLY ones worth watching), but Scooby-Dum is probably the team member who works best with the show's more comedic tone, while his teammates reflect Hanna-Barbera's more mature shows. The Laff-a-Lympics gave him a great opportunity to shine individually, and he manages to bring a touch of humor to the events he enters.

What's with this conspiracy about the Yogi Yahooeys? It's possible they've often been given too high a ranking compared to their performance, but that seems perfectly reasonable to me. Let's look at it this way: the team's performance earns them bronze, but Snagglepuss and Mildew's gold value work covering the events deserves the top spot. So, on average, the Yogi Yahooeys win the silver medal :) I guess that's why I don't watch very often Laff-a-Lympics. I act too much like the first Phantom from Stage Fright : the Yogi Yahooeys MUST win ! I don't want poor Huckleberry Hound to return to his terrible past experiences with chickens...

Thanks for your interview with Mogan Baden ! It's great that she was able to introduce new characters, a bit like Mystery Incorporated did, while still developing the gang members. It reminded me of a video from The Extras TV about the new Tom and Jerry Blu-ray. George Feltenstein explained that while cartoon characters from before the advent of television, like the Looney Tunes, Disney characters, and Tom and Jerry, evolved throughout the episodes, those created for television—and he specifically mentioned Scooby-Doo—were very well-defined from the start and evolved very little. I more or less agree with his reasoning.

I think it's the core element of a series that determines whether its characters need to evolve or not. In the case of Yogi and Huckleberry Hound, their cartoons often revolve around their personalities, and changes began to be made starting with season 2 of The Huckleberry Hound Show to allow for the exploration of new concepts, notably Yogi's picnic baskets.

In series like The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo, other elements contribute greatly to the universe's identity, whether it's the prehistoric inventions and 1960s lifestyle in the case of The Flintstones, or the mystery and monster design for Scooby. Of course, the gang members have evolved over time, particularly with The New Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo Show and What's New, but George Feltenstein's perspective seems understandable regarding the first three series in the franchise. All the characters are already well-developed, and it's additions like guest stars and the overall atmosphere that give each one its unique character.

To get back to Mogan Baden, I think it's much more interesting to develop the Scooby-Doo characters in books rather than on television. In the written word, there are moments where we get to know Daphne and Velma better, whereas series have to adhere to a time constraint and advance the mystery, which leaves little room for the psychological development of the protagonists (except in Mystery Incorporated).

Regarding the best version of the gang's first meeting, I tried to judge solely on that criterion and not on the overall quality of the series. I much prefer A Pup Named Scooby-Doo to Mystery Begins, but on this point, the film presents a much more developed story, while A Pup Named Scooby-Doo doesn't clearly explain how The Scooby-Doo Detective Agency was formed. This is the only thing Pup falls short on, though I'd put him second, or close to first, if I were ranking them.

I have the complete Scooby-Doo Where Are You series DVD. I tried the quiz again, and sure enough, the Mystery Machine belonged to Daphne's uncle. The questions are a bit odd, though. One of them asks what Shaggy does to fool the monsters. I thought the correct answer was that he disguises himself, but it's actually his ventriloquism technique for making Scooby talk, which is much less common.

Completely agreed about Scooby-Dum! His goofy vibe works super well with the show. I hadn't thought about it too deeply before, but you make a great point that the sillier characters are the ones that work best here. Actually, my rankings are entirely divided between the sillier characters (#5-1) and the more serious ones (#11-6). That's awesome that you like the Yogis so much haha! I've always been more of a Scooby Doobies fan myself, but the Yogis definitely have their charm too.

Lol I like that theory! I had never noticed it before researching for that fun fact a couple years ago, but it was so funny to me that the Yogis benefited every single time from the wrong medal being given out. Aww poor Huck haha. He definitely doesn't deserve to relive that generational trauma lol!

Yeah, I think Morgan did a great job developing Daphne and Velma's personalities further! They felt quite consistent with the characters' natural evolutions over the course of the franchise. I would agree that George's quote has been accurate for the Scooby franchise. Despite their limited characterizations, I think the classic era does a great job of strongly defining the characters! I've been rewatching Guess Who lately, since I haven't seen some of the episodes since they originally aired. It's interesting seeing the characters with such limited characterizations again, because it shows the contrast of how much the characters have evolved since the classic era. Like you said, it's also interesting to see how much atmosphere played a role in advancing those first three Scooby series. Guess Who not always doing well with creating a strong atmosphere (at least imo) highlights just how amazing the classic era was at doing this.

For sure, I totally agree that books are able to provide more depth and detail to the story than can be shown in the episodes/movies. I'm really hopeful that they keep releasing young adult stories! I've loved the Daphne & Velma series and the most recent Hex Girls novel we've gotten. I'd love to get more content in that vein. Not sure if you plan to read the Daphne & Velma books someday, but I think you'd enjoy them if you liked the Hex Girls book.

That totally makes sense about Pup and Mystery Begins! I agree that Mystery Begins provides a much deeper story in that regard.

That is a really odd question! I would have guessed
"he disguises himself" too, since that happens a lot more often than the ventriloquism bit. I believe it only happens a few times in Where Are You.
