We've got a super long list for this week's poll! To keep it at a manageable level, I only included characters that had significant speaking roles (more than a few lines) in more than one episode. Characters that made cameos or are shown in flashbacks are not included here.

Before revealing the results, I wanted to share an announcement. Tomorrow will mark 600 weeks of posting fun facts! In typical fashion, I've got something special planned to celebrate! Tomorrow's fun fact will be written by someone who was worked on a Scooby project. Because they will be writing it, tomorrow's fun fact will likely be posted much later than usual. It may be towards evening CST before it's up. Hope you're excited for tomorrow's fun fact! I know I am...for once, even I don't know what cool thing I'm going to be learning on here tomorrow, lol!

Last week was super close between Robi, Uncle Albert and Phibes. Each option was only one vote apart! Robi barely pulls off the win for this series.

This may be one of the longest lists I've ever ranked on here lol. Here we go...

31. Rick Spartan - Melbourne O'Reilly outsold. While I do like the idea of having a rugged adventurer character in this series, I'm not a fan of how generally thoughtless he is towards everyone around him. I don't really like the joke about his disrespecting cultures either. I think the writers can do better than that, and don't think they needed to lean into that joke as much as they did.

30. Charles Wheatleby - As I've sat with the series a bit more, I'm not really a fan of the racist nickname or role that he's put in. Obviously it is "acknowledged," but he's still pretty much typecast into this role of being this silly indigenous "servant" to Rick. Over the years, I've grown to feel his character is on the level of "Stand and Deliver," in the sense that the writers really should have known better...

29. 31. Natasha Fenk - Nothing negative to say about her. Honestly, all of the SDMI recurring characters are good! She is pretty unmemorable, so I feel comfortable placing her here.

28. Barty Blake - He's fine, but I consider him to be mostly background. His contributions to this series are pretty limited.

27. Paula Rogers - Also doesn't make much of an impression on me.

26. Colton Rogers - See the two above, although Casey Kasem voicing him gives him a little boost.

25. Dale Dinkley - Slightly above the other three because the aesthetic is right for being Velma's father.

24. Chen - Another one of the less memorable characters of this series. He's ahead of the other two because I like his role in the mystery in "The Dragon's Secret."

23. H.P. Hatecraft - Really fun Lovecraft reference!

22/21. Brenda and Dylan - A very fun tongue-in-cheek gag. It's amusing to have a more realistic take for the cold opens. Btw, if anybody wants to vote for both of them, I have no issue with it. Wasn't really sure whether to separate them, so I did.

20. Mary Anne Gleardon - An evil kid genius feels like a perfect character for this series! She's a fun character.

19. George Avacados - The name thing gets a little old, but I enjoy the recurring trope of the gang suspecting him as the monster when he's not, and then he finally is in his last appearance.

18. Skipper Shelton - Fun character! Even if he doesn't have a big role in the series, he works well as a character that the gang runs into from time to time.

17. Nan Blake - This is my favorite version of Daphne's mom. She feels perfectly aligned with Daphne's vibes, and is written in a way where you can see how she influenced Daphne to be the way she is. A huge step above many of the other parents in this show.

16/15. Gary and Ethan - These guys are super fun lol. The goofy jock archetype works perfectly for this show, and they have a lot of great moments.

14. Evil Entity - Incredible final villain! His formlessness makes him super terrifying. He really grew on me when I rewatched the last half of season 2 over the holidays.

13. Alice May - I really debated where to place her, but I'm ultimately boosting her here because the ghost feels like an extension of her character. I absolutely love the ghost design; she's one of the best villains of this series for me. The real Alice is a very cool character too! I like the mysteriousness surrounding her.

12. Nova - It was an adorable idea to give Scooby such a cute girlfriend lol! I really like how her character arc evolves in a way you'd never expect. It's so cool that she serves as kind of a guide for Scooby at the end.

11. Judy Reeves - Oof, it was such a struggle picking who'd miss the top 10! She works so well as Fred's real mom. She and Brad's friendly aesthetic is almost creepy at times once you get to know her real intentions.

10. Brad Chiles - Pretty much the same as #11. I put him slightly above because I think he pulls off that "being super nice to cover my evil" role a little better.

9. Angie Dinkley - As much as I love SDMI, this is how the other parents (besides Nan) should have been written. I wish Barty, Dale and Shaggy's parents were less generic and in the background. Angie feels so much like Velma's mom, and I like her role in helping Velma and the gang solve some of their mysteries. Her owning the Spook Museum is also pretty cool.

8. The Freak - His design is absolutely terrifying! I would argue he's one of the creepiest villains in the franchise (and who the culprit ends up being makes that even more the case). He works so well for me as an overarching foe. The build-up feels really intense, maybe even a little more than the build-up to the Evil Entity at the end of the series. The Freak falls short of being a perfect villain for me. I've mentioned it on here before, but I think it was a big mistake to take away his creepy riddles in the final episode.

7. Mr. E - His character arc is one of the best in this series. He works really well as a mysterious "friend" to the gang in the beginning of season 1. Love the twi

Not sure why Natasha is numbered both 29 and 31, but she should be #29 obviously.

Love the twist of who he really is at the end of the season, and his evolution throughout season 2 is super interesting.

6. Janet Nettles - She works so well as the new mayor! I think they executed introducing her character perfectly. She's different enough from Mayor Jones that she doesn't feel overshadowed by him or like a "replacement." She feels like her own character that brings something unique to the series.

5. Cassidy Williams - It's so tough to choose between my top 5! Cassidy is an incredibly versatile character that feels essential to the series. The twist about her real identity is shocking, and I really liked how they made her character become more three-dimensional after the events of the season 1 finale. When she's no longer in those final episodes, her absence is definitely felt.

4. Mayor Jones - Such an incredible character! His sternness and resistance to Fred solving mysteries makes him an interesting character from the get-go. As season 1 progresses, the mystery surrounding him makes his character even more interesting. And spoilers, but his evil plan at the end of season 1 is probably the most sick and twisted plan in the entire franchise. It's such a shocking twist and is executed so well.

3. Marcie - Speaking of incredible characters, Marcie's evolution is the coolest of the entire series imo. She goes from essentially being a joke character, to a redeemed villain, to a respected temporary member of the gang, and friend/implied love interest to Velma. Her character arc is so well written, and super interesting to follow. One of the best recurring characters in the history of the franchise imo. Would love to see her appear again in another project.

2. Professor Pericles - The Freak is my favorite villain of this series, but Pericles is arguably the most diabolical. He is a true criminal mastermind and does some seriously messed up stuff throughout the course of the series. He's such a perfect villain that feels quintessential to the progression of this series.

1. Sheriff Stone - This series is so stacked with awesome recurring characters that making a #1 choice felt impossible. Nonetheless, I'm going with Sheriff Stone. He's the perfect balance of stern and goofy. He infuses every scene he's in with a lot of fun energy, and I have such a soft spot for him. I'd love to see him appear again someday!

Slot Horatio Kharon in between Hatecraft and Chen. He's a very interesting and complex character, but I'm not a big fan of how grumpy he is before becoming whole again lol.

I'll put Ed Machine between Chen and Dale Dinkley. His personality is pretty robotic and he doesn't make a huge impression on me. His demise because of Pericles is one of the most intense scenes of the series imo.

I'll put the family that's a National Lampoon's Vacation parody between Dale Dinkley and Ed Machine. Even though I don't have the soft spot for those films that I once did, I like the reference!

Ed Machine does have a lot of important scenes in season 1 that are relevant to the overarching plot though, with the current and old gang, and the emotionless presence adds to the tension and intrigue of the scenes. Being the CEO of Destroido is also something. His death is obv memorable but I kinda love how no one ever mentions him in season 2 besides the sitting room though lol, I guess nobody gave a shit about him beyond just being a lackey. Seems like Ricky is now the face of Destroido and no one bats an eye too, cuz he acts like CEO now and not just owner.

For sure, I just find most of the other recurring characters more memorable. Even if the emotionlessness of his personality was intentional, it also kinda made him not as memorable to me for whatever reason. SDMI has such strong supporting characters otherwise that he doesn't stand out to me as much as he might have if he were in another series.

I'll add Harlan Ellison in between Gary and Ethan and the Evil Entity. He's such a fun character to have in "The Shrieking Madness." Love that they got him to appear in this series.

I'll put Ernesto between Ed Machine and Dale. It's neat to have an activist character in this series, since I don't think we ever have prior to this (could be misremembering though). He doesn't make all that much on impression on me though compared to other characters.

Francilee Jackson goes between Ernesto and Dale. Fun callback, although it works a little less well for me considering the semi-recent scandal with Paula Deen who she's based off of.

Sheriff Stone and Mayor Nettles are tied for me i think they have an amazing relationship and they are super fun, i always bring them back in my fan stories since they make great recurring characters

Sheriff Stone is the easy choice for me. His presence in the series is essential, and his character subverts the common tropes we usually see with cops in teen mystery shows. His growth as a character is excellent, and the humour he brings is always 10/10.

Completely agreed with all you said here! I hadn't mentioned it in my rankings, but I also really enjoy how he goes against the expectations you'd have for a cop character in a mystery show. And despite his silliness, he manages to evolve as a character throughout the series, which is really cool to see! SDMI does a pretty consistently amazing job writing recurring characters in general.

This was quite difficult to rank as it went on the episodes turn their focus more onto the overarching mystery rather than individual ones.

Also I feel the Vacation family deserve a shoutout as well wiyh this poll.

Unsure how you're doing with meddling kids but for me it has been super interesting so far and a great read, just started part 3! Hex Girls overall for me was a 5 out of 10, couldn't get over the lazy continuity and heavy romance focus.

It was fun to read your list! Nice to see "Theater of Doom" so high, that's one of my faves too. "Mystery Solvers Club State Finals" doesn't work well for me either like it does most people. I don't think I've seen it so low on anyone's lists, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't a huge fan of it. I don't hate it or anything, but it isn't one of my favorite episodes like it seems to be for a lot of people. I was also surprised to see "The Legend of Alice May" so low. I feel like that's usually one that's towards the top of everybody's lists, so interesting to see a different opinion on that one. Here are my rankings:

I actually just started Meddling Kids yesterday! I'm a little over 100 pages currently. I think it's pretty good for what it is! It's interesting to see a more gritty, harsh parody of Scooby. I will admit it feels a little try-hard edgy at times (did we really need an entire page of description of what would happen if Andy kicked that guy in the crotch? lol), but overall the mystery has me really interested. I'm eager to read more, thanks again for the rec!

Good to see we're quite balanced lists wise. Alice May lost significant points for me due to a massive oversight from the gang/the flashback. If Alice was Carswell's daughter there is no way she could have been that young in the flashback considering the age of the gang! Unless it is implying it is a Pup Mystery. Also shocked to see Grim Judgement so high, that one just felt overly predictable. As for Mystery Solvers, liked it originally but hasn't grown well for me, it, like Heart of Evil, offers zero to the overall story and feels like solely filler.

As for Meddling Kids, I believe you became aware of Enid Blyton and the Famous Five last year. There are multiple references from that series within the book to, the main characters going to an aunt's house for the holidays, an island, a tomboy with a boys name, Blyton Hills etc. it's very cleverly done how the author has crafted two separate works and merged them together to make their own book. The slow burn of the book for me works in its favour, slowly building suspense. Just passed 200 myself!

Yeah the discrepancy with that episode and the original Creeper mystery is a tad bit odd. Minor continuity errors don't really bother me as much as they seem to for you. Considering it's the whole reasoning for the mystery, I get why it'd be so much lower if that's an issue for you. The atmosphere and villain of "Grim Judgement" boost it a lot for me, even if the plan isn't the greatest.

I was noticing all those references too and thought they were really cool! The author does a really good job establishing his own tone from the inspiration of those two books and the franchise in general. Yeah, the slow burn works really well, and I like how they've gradually started talking about the traumatic events little by little as the book goes on.

Looks like our lists are pretty similar other than "Mystery Solvers Club State Finals." Although I didn't put them quite as low as you, I totally agree with the placement of "Aliens Among Us" and "The Horrible Herd." I've always thought they felt very rushed in a way that other episodes of the series do not.

I honestly don't get why Horrible Herd would feel forgettable. To me it's a very solid episode, about mid-pack of season 2. Good highlights and interesting things going on.

For me it comes down to the pacing. I don't disagree that there are a few memorable moments in the episode, like Nova falling from the helicopter and Pericles' plan to create the herd, but the mystery feels like they are rushing from scene to scene faster than they need to. Both I have that issue with both "Aliens Among Us" and "The Horrible Herd."

Pericles' plan is just so insane and unique, the ending is kinda macabre, and I think this episode highlights and accentuates really well the differences between Ricky and the other 3 old members, which we see play out going forward. I don't mind the mystery taking a backseat since the villains of this episode are the overarching ones and for narrative purposes it serves the episode to get it over with quicker.

Given the serialized nature of Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated, it is pretty obvious that this is the best series for recurring characters overall, and it isn't very close. I'd imagine whoever wins this poll will have the advantage heading into the final poll of the series

31. Dale Dinkley- Not bad, but very unmemorable. To the point where I didn't even realize he qualified for the poll as I don't remember him having many lines at all lol

30. Paula Rogers- Shaggy's parents don't stand out a ton to me either here

29. Colton Rogers- Casey Kasem boost here but that is about it

28. Barty Blake- Slightly more memorable than the other three imo, but not by much

27. Chen- One of the least memorable here, imo

26. Charles Whealtesby- Yeah, the Rick Spartan episode characters have not aged particularly well now that I think about it

25. Rick Spartan- Gets a few more points for being more memorable than Charles, but that also comes with being more questionable as well. Agreed with Wildwind that Melbourne O'Reilly outsold

24. Natasha Fenk- Well she was in Night Terrors, so that helps at least a little bit, but not enough

23. Nan Blake- A little more memorable than the other parents so far, but not by a ton

22. Evil Entity- Maybe a hot take, doesn't leave much of an impression on me. I am not the biggest Come Undone fan anyway, so that doesn't help either. Still a decent enough villain I'd say though

21. Nova- Another hot take possibly, I always thought Nova's role towards the end of the series was very strange, not a bad character though.

20. Mary Anne Gleardon- The call back to Mary Anne in Wrath of Krampus was pretty well done

19. HP Hatecraft- "Char Gar Gothakon, the beast that hath no name" always makes me laugh

18. Alice May- A better monster than character, but she definitely is one of the most memorable monsters in The Legend of Alice May

17/16. Brenda and Dylan- One of the better recurring gags for this series, though obviously doesn't have the complexity of many further on the list

15. Skipper Shelton- Really fun side character that pops in every once in a while

14/13. Gary and Ethan- They are such ridiculous jock stereotypes, but also easy enough to make a ton of fun of by also being giant dorks that it fits the series really well.

12. Angie Dinkley- Easily the best character of the non-criminal parents here. Also, I found it funny how Harlan Ellison knew her as "Cape Cod DInkley"

11/10. Judy and Brad- Their "friendliness" is definitely very unsettling. Brad does rank just a bit ahead of Judy as his friendliness is even more unsettling imo

9. George Avocados- I am a big fan of George Avocados and found that gimmick very funny each time. I can only rank him so high on a list with the characters still yet to come on it though.

8. The Freak- Would rank even higher if his personality didn't change, but still a very good villain, and very iconic

7. Marcie- I would have never expected such an incredibly developed arc for Marcie before watching season 2, but it happened. Excellent character, tough competition here though

6. Janet Nettles- They had big shoes to fill after Mayor Jones could obviously no longer be the mayor, and Janet filled that role excellently and brings a different dynamic with the gang that works really well

5. Cassidy Williams- It is tough, tough, tough to rank 3-5 for me here, they are all right with each other, for obvious reasons. This is how I decided to go this time

4. Mr. E- Phenomenal character, his early role works so well with the early vibe of the series, but then continues to evolve through the second season and really fit in with that season as well

3. Professor Pericles- I assume Pericles will win, and while he is in third for me, it would be a great choice. He is THE villain of the series and a fantastic one at that

2. Mayor Jones- I am a huge fan of Mayor Jones's character all throughout the series. From the comic relief buddy of Sheriff Stone, to something much more sinister, to someone who genuinely seems to regret his actions and really did love Fred as his son even with his many, many issues. Really a much more complex character than I see get recognized often

1. Sheriff Bronson Stone- Being extraordinarily funny is a good way to be one of my favorite recurring characters, but the way that he slowly, gradually warms up to the gang is one of my favorite parts of the entire series

31. It's so funny, I actually had to check if he did really qualify because I just assumed despite his minimal lines lol. Looks like he barely did according to Scoobypedia. He literally talked in the season 1 premiere and finale, and that's it. He appeared in two other episodes of the series.

18. Completely agreed. If I had ranked her just based off of her character, she probably would have been around the same place she is on your list.

8. I would be very interested to know why the writers intentionally toned him down in the season finale. Both "Pawn of Shadows" and "All Fear the Freak" were written by Mitch Watson, so I kinda feel like there has to be some reason given the characterization is so different.

3. I'm guessing he'll win too, although I could see Sheriff Stone pulling off an underdog win.

2. Completely agreed, the complexity of his character really boosts him for me too. The series shows so many different sides of his character despite having only half amount of the time that most other recurring characters got.

1. Same for me, I think it's very sweet to watch him slowly embrace the gang as the show evolves.

31. Dale is by far the most useless recurring character. I sometimes forget he even exists and wonder if the creatives did too, he's utilized that little.

31. Even after thinking about it all day but not bothering to look it up, I still cannot remember about any line from Dale. Talk about a nothing burger of a character

8. I think there is a possibility they never intended the Freak to be talking like that constantly but wanted a cool note to end Pawn of Shadows on. It's a shame

8. That's a fair point. The fact that he does it in both his appearances in "Pawn of Shadows" made me assume it was a part of his speech patterns, but I suppose it's possible both times were just meant to be creepy cliffhangers before the intro/end. Or perhaps the 20 year gap made The Freak realize it was harder than he thought to come up with a poem for every time he spoke. I imagine it would take a lot of work to pre-plan all those lol.

Horatio Kharon- Between Alice May and HP Hatecraft- I don't feel super strongly, but Nightmare in Red is one of my favorite episodes and he has a big role in that

Cold Open Family- Between Fenk and Spartan- Doesn't do much for me

Ed Machine- Between Skipper and Brenda and Dylan- I actually like Ed's presence in season 1, though he isn't one of my very favorites

31–30) Rick Spartan / Charles Whealtesby:
These characters are questionable at best. I’ve always had a soft spot for adventure characters like Nathan Drake, Indiana Jones, or Melbourne O’Reilly, and Rick is far from them.

29–28) Chen / Natasha Fenk:
Some of the least memorable characters in the series.

27) Mary Anne Gleardon:
Her character is fine. I agree that an evil genius little girl fits perfectly in a series like this, but she didn’t have many opportunities to shine.

26–25–24–23–22) Dale Dinkley / Paula Rogers / Colton Rogers / Barty Blake / Nan Blake:
The gang’s parents are hit or miss in SDMI. I guess these five are likable, and some are more memorable than others, but I decided to group them together to save time.

21) H.P. Hatecraft:
A character based on Lovecraft is a must for a series like this. He was a fun character.

20–19) Brenda and Dylan:
Great material for the cold opens. Their over-the-top teenage attitude, along with the fact that they were always being attacked by some monster, was really funny to me.

18) George Avocados:
He plays the role of a red herring in the series until he turns out to be the culprit. Another nice comic relief character (except for the name joke, which stopped being funny after the first time).

17) Skipper Shelton:
Sure, he didn’t have a major role, but he was very likable and served as a solid character for the gang to turn to from time to time.

16) Alice May:
Her mysterious background really does it for me, and I’d love to know more about her. Her disguises were genuinely creepy.

15–14) Gary and Ethan:
Probably the best comedic characters. They play the role of goofy jocks perfectly.

13) Nova:
I would argue that her cuteness is her best feature. She has great chemistry with Scooby, but I agree that her role toward the end was a bit strange.

12) Evil Entity:
It was the perfect villain for the finale and a real threat, but we all know it wasn’t the best antagonist in the series. Its role in the background was bigger than its actual appearance.

11–10) Judy Reeves / Brad Chiles:
Some of the best antagonists, and definitely quite sinister. They were willing to do some seriously messed-up things to find the treasure, with their plastic surgeries being the cherry on top. Probably the worst parents in the history of Scooby-Doo, lol—but we’re ranking characters overall, not based on how good they were morally.

9) The Freak:
An awesome, creepy design and a very memorable villain. The reveal of his true identity was quite shocking. However, his slight personality change prevents me from ranking him any higher.

8)Angie Dinkley:
The best biological parent in this universe. She was a powerful woman and really helpful to the gang. Her relationship with Velma was great too!

7)Marcie:
She had probably the best evolution in the series and one of the best in cartoon history tbh but the competition is fierce here.

6)Mr. E:
Probably my hot take but I enjoyed him more as a mysterious figure in the shadows. He had an interesting character arc as well.

5)Janet Nettles:
Such a kind hearted person I really liked her. Her chemistry with the sheriff and the gang was great

4)Cassidy Williams:
The most pure character in the original gang. She was a strong character too, her relationship with the gang was great and she had the second best plot twist in the series imo.

3)Professor Pericles: The face of real evil. The best villain in the series (tough role to get in SDMI) and one of the most sinister in Scooby history.

2)Sheriff Stone:
I will be totally fine if he wins because he is a great character. He always had good intentions and he was hilarious too...

1)Mayor Jones:
The most multi dimentional character in the series. He starts as a comedic buddy to the Sheriff and he has an incredible journey as a character till the end. He won't win probably but I would like to give him the 1st place (although the top 3 could be no1 any other day). Ps: Best plot twist of course...

31-30. I completely agree with you! I haven't seen it discussed much, but despite Rick being written as an "Indiana Jones" character, he just comes off to me as a narcissist who wants to say he did cool stuff. He doesn't have those same hero qualities or interest in the places he's exploring that typical "adventurer" characters do.

20-19. The over-the-top teenage stereotypes enhance their characters quite a bit for me too lol.

12. Despite that I really like the Evil Entity as a villain, I'm 100% in agreement with you that he needed to have more of a presence like The Freak did. The Freak was absolutely terrifying and works so well as a final villain. The Evil Entity is cool, but doesn't quite have the same charisma. The build-up feels much creepier than the actual final stand-off to me.

11-10. I haven't heard it talked about a lot, but yeah, the plastic surgery bit is probably the most messed-up parts of their plan imo. It feels even more so after Brad and Judy are stuck that way permanently.

6. Same for me! I don't dislike him once we see his face, but I agree he feels more alluring as a character when we don't know who he is.

I had remembered the family and initially chose not to include them because they only had two brief cameos. However, I just looked it up again and forgot they were also in "Stand and Deliver." Given that, I guess they could be added too, thanks!

I had originally not included him because he didn't fit the "characters that had significant roles (more than a few lines) in more than one episode." However, I realized even some of the parents don't fit that lol. I think it's fair he be added as an option. And totally agreed, it's incredible they got him to guest star in this series!
