Happy early Valentine's Day to everyone! One of the major criticisms a lot of people had of Velma was that the romantic drama was not handled well. Given that and the fact that it's nearly Valentine's Day, I thought it might be interesting to do a poll about what people's favorite romantic pairing was in the franchise. I know many people feel romance has a history of being done very poorly in the franchise, so I'll be very interested to see what wins here!
To keep the poll at a manageable amount of options, I did not include implied romantic pairings or the gang briefly having a crush on someone outside the gang (i.e. Scooby and the sled dog in "A Scary Night with a Snow Beast Fright"). Thankfully, that will also save us from having to acknowledge the awkwardness that is Scooby-Doo's crush on Scooby-Dee in "The Chiller Diller Movie Thriller" lol. Our results for the Best Haunted House Winner's Circle poll are in, and here's what you guys voted! Surprisingly, "Night Terrors" came in last with just 10 votes, and "Bravo Dooby Doo" was just ahead in second place with 16 votes. As expected, "A Night of Fright Is No Delight" was our winner for best haunted house episode, amassing a total of 43 votes!

I just added this as an option if you wanted to go back and vote for it.

Night of 100 Frights is definitely my favorite. I'm not a huge video game person so I haven't played all of the Scooby video games, but I would say that one stands out as my favorite because of all the cool Easter Eggs and classic villains. I also think that Crystal Cove Online Internet game from when SDMI was released is underrated. It's such a cool idea to create a video game where the viewer get to play the episodes themselves!

Voted DTV Fraphne, those are the versions of the characters I'm most interested in, anyway.

Yeah, that show definitely wanted to nail its awful "love rectangle" into the ground haha. I could see someone voting for it though, I always think nobody's going to vote for an option and then that option gets a vote.

Won’t even lie, I’m not sure I have a favorite. Feel like couples like Fred and Daphne could be executed much better than they were in all variations

It was a tough question for me too. My vote was between Googie/Shaggy and Crystal and Amber, and I ended up also voting the latter.

To me the thing that makes Crystal and Amber perfect for Shaggy and Scooby is... that they are "monsters". The fact that Scooby and Shaggy's soulmates are what they are the most scared of is brilliant. 2/13/2023 05:15:27 pm
I agree it's really insightful of the writers to create a plotline like that for Shaggy and Scooby! I'd love to see them come back at some point as well, as long as they were written on-character and it wasn't another Return to Zombie Island type situation.

Velma and Marcie was never an "official romantic pairing" confirmed inside the show though. Only afterwards was it confirmed by the creator, the same way as Fred and Daphne in the early days and Shaggy and Daphne in '83-'85. So it would be fair to include all of them

If anything, Velma/Shaggy from "Velma" is the one that shouldn't be here, as they are only implied at best or still nonexistent at worst, cuz they don't show them get together at any point.

Suppose you're right about the Fred/Daphne and Shaggy/Daphne options, I'll add those.

Always had a soft spot for Shaggy and Googie myself.

I do too, I feel it's one of the few romances in the show that's done well and doesn't interfere with the plot.

This is obvious imo. Fred and Daphne are the only two that work. Especially in the movies such as camp scare and especially stage fright.

I'm in the middle between you and Becker personally. I liked Camp Scare but didn't think it worked so well in Stage Fright.

Same here. I like them better when just implied earlier on. Love triangle was decent in Camp Scare, but thought it was pretty awful in Stage Fright and every other movie besides Camp Scare where they add a new person and the other gets jealous or whatever

Shaggy and Crystal and Scooby and Amber for me. Their relationship was so sweet. It was sad that they had to say goodbye to the two guys.

Agreed! That scene at the end of the movie still makes me a little sad every time I watch Alien Invaders.

That's a good point! Although we technically don't see how that one ends, but it's nice to think it ended amicably.

Was Shaggy and Daphne official? Anyway I think Shaggy/Scooby and Crystal/Amber are the cutest

One of the creators (I think Tom Ruegger) made it official in some interviews. I originally didn't include it, but switched it later since I had forgotten there was that official confirmation.

This is an interesting topic regarding romance. Thinking of crushes and brief romances and romances in general, I can think of very few instances prior to 1982 and then they really ramped it up.

I don't think Daphne and Velma were into Alex in the Mamba Wamba episode haha. Why do you think that?

I also never really interpreted Daphne and Velma as being in love with the band leader, so I'd be interested to hear what makes you think that too.

Wildwind, it is more like a crush. Firstly, the way they animate Daphne in the opening scenes makes her seem obsessed with Alex, all wide eyed and staring. Second, Velma goes, " What a doll.. I mean to invite us." Also, when it is time to split up, Daphne blurts out. "Alex, I will go with you."

Huh, I hadn't noticed that before but I do remember those lines. That's really interesting that they included that in here!

i picked Fred and Daphne because i’ve gotten to really like this pairing since 2019 but if i could pick more than one, i also would’ve picked Velma and Marcie. if i saw this post in 2018 instead of nowadays, i’d definitely pick Shaggy and Daphne because i was obsessed with that pairing back then😭 i still think it’s a cute ship though and i still have a soft spot for that ship for those reasons. i don’t have a favorite scooby gang ship as of right now and haven’t for years but i’ve gotten to like Fraphne more than i originally did so i just picked that one.

I've never been much into shipping personally, but I agree both Fred/Daphne and Shaggy/Daphne can be cute if it's done well :)
