Happy Easter to everyone celebrating! Nothing goes better together than Easter and wrestling, am I right? haha I have to say I'm tempted to vote for the "wrestling in general is awful" option in this one since I really do not care for this particular sport haha.

I had to tally up the results for last week's poll a bit early (Friday) as I'm traveling out-of-state to visit family for Easter. I will add the Saturday votes to these results later, but it's very doubtful they will change anything given the huge gap, and there's usually just one or two votes on Saturdays.

Which season of A Pup Named Scooby-Doo had the best villains overall?
Season 1 - 37
Season 2 - 10
Season 3 - 2
Season 4 - 5

Wrestle Maniacs from A Pup Named Scooby Doo

And it isn’t particularly close tbh

Didn’t watch: Curse of the Speed Demon. I felt about no desire to watch this movie

3. Wrestlemania Mystery: Not my thing

2. Wrestle Maniacs WNSD : I think they nailed the setting and costumes, but the mystery itself always felt lackluster to me

1. Wrestle Maniacs APNSD: Absolutely hilarious. One of the funniest of the series

I wondered if you might pick “Wrestle Maniacs” from Pup after reading your reviews on ScoobyAddicts the other day haha.

4. Curse of the Speed Demon - it’s alright. I’m not a big fan of the wrestling/racing combo, but the villain was cool and the plot was fine enough.

3. WrestleMania Mystery - much better than the sequel imo. I liked the ghost bear and the WWE people made decent guests. I enjoyed the film overall.

2. Wrestle Maniacs (Pup) - tons of silly fun. The Hooded Heifer is a great villain and the humor is really decent here.

1. Wrestle Maniacs (What’s New) - I was debating what to pick here, but ultimately I think I like the villain and the mystery of this one best. This was a fun episode. I don’t love any of the wrestling episodes. though.

One of my problems with the mystery in the WNSD one is what I call the Roller Ghoster Ride effect. Those kids literally sent a trailer with Shaggy and Scooby down into a canyon. They should have charges pressed against them immediately including destruction of property and attempted murder, but they pull the whole “they were just looking out for their dad” card out and get away with it

WildwindVampire link
4/18/2022 01:27:55 pm

Omg that bothers me too! Not as much as in "Roller Ghoster Ride" (that one really bugs me to this day haha), but it's really weird how multiple episodes of the series have the culprit get away with a crime that they definitely should have been arrested for. The only thing I can think of is that they didn't want to show kids getting arrested in the show, but I'm not sure.

4/18/2022 04:56:15 pm

Yeah I get that they wanted to have slightly happier endings in some of these, but I mean, why not just cut out the murder attempt scenes? This one actually bothers me a little more than Roller Ghoster Ride because A. I like the rest of that episode more than the rest of this so bias lol and B. It can be assumed that Terry still got punished by their mother lol

4/18/2022 07:29:15 pm

I totally agree. It is a great episode but that still really bothers me lol. That's fair that this one bothers you more, especially if Terry actually did get punished by her mother lol. I was thinking maybe WB thought it was too dark having children being sent to juvenile court (since kids can't go to prison), but if that were the case, they shouldn't have included the attempted murder scenes like you said haha.

I had to be honest and go for "wrestling in general is awful."

If you didn't like wrestling the first time, then I don't understand how wrestling is going to be any better with racing added to it. Wrestling is wrestling. Wrestling doesn't mean wrestling AND racing.

I didn't mind the Pup and What's New episodes, per se, but wrestling isn't my thing, so the movies didn't interest me. They weren't particularly great movies, either. That's my opinion. To each their own.

I liked the underground chase in WrestleMania Mystery. But I didn't care for the bear mistreatment in the flashbacks. It was just perfectly acceptable to mistreat a bear like that. If that had been live-action, there would've been a "No animal was harmed in the making of this movie" sign.

I’ve never gotten the appeal of wrestling. It’s the worst sport in my opinion. My feelings on Curse of the Speed Demon were very similar to yours.

I liked the Pup and WNSD episodes as well, but this is the first sports poll where no options really stood out to me. I could have voted for either of them tbh, because while they both have their strengths, neither of them were amazing episodes. I really hated the bear mistreatment in WrestleMania Mystery too. I’m an animal lover, so it always makes me sad whenever any animals are mistreated. That was such an unnecessary detail and I wish they wouldn’t have put it in the film.

Wrestle Maniacs (Pup)

This episode was really funny and enjoyable. The wrestlers were hysterical both names and their costumes and moves. It was nice seeing Shaggy and Scooby in their Commander Cool and Mellow Mutt outfits again.

The barbecue sauce gag was amusing and weird. How can anyone not like barbecue sauce. I guess they don’t like ribs either.

The hooded heifer was a great and cool villain. I like how he started or ended his sentences with the letter m or moo.

It was interesting to see Carol Colossal again and her former assistant Barbara Simone whose being out on a prison release permit

I also like that in this episode we had 4 suspects. It’s usually two or one with the addition of Red Herring.

It was funny seeing Velma shouting at the wrestlers haha. Red Herring beating up Freddy was so mean but laughable.

This episode was really enjoyable and definitely was a textbook example of the series' comedic tone. I enjoyed the callbacks to Carol Colossal, Barbara Simone, Commander Cool and Mellow Mutt. I also liked that there were a lot of suspects. Velma shouting at the wrestlers was funny. The Hooded Heifer was an amusing villain, and definitely one of the more creative ones in this series.

The What's New and A Pup "Wrestle Maniacs" episodes are pretty good (don't know why they titled them the same though). They're not awesome, but they're not mediocre either. Both have cool monsters and great laughs. I voted for the WNSD one, I like the setting, plot and mystery, and a rare Fred kidnapping, which was executed in quite an interesting way.
The movies are very run-of-the-mill and "eh", they're not appealing to me. I guess the first one is the better of the two. Wrestling is not my thing at all. And compared to the episodes, I felt like the movies dived way more into the culture, details and in-jokes of the wrestling fandom (I mean... they've got a dozen real-life wrestlers in them after all), stuff that I obviously don't know or understand, so that made the films a lot less appealing to me.

It is weird that they titled it the same. I felt similarly about the WNSD "Wrestle Maniacs." The Fred kidnapping was done in a really interesting way, which made the episode unique and that's ultimately why I voted for it.

I enjoy the first WWE movie, but it's definitely not on the top of my list as I'm not a fan of wrestling. The second one isn't bad necessarily, but it's not one I'd watch often (and I haven't watched it since it came out). Yeah, the movies really dove deep with the wrestling culture/jokes. I didn't find the inclusion of that stuff particularly appealing, as like you, I didn't understand/get any of it. The premise of the first film was at least somewhat interesting, whereas I'd be totally fine not ever watching the second one again.

There was such a bizarre stretch in the mid 2010s where WWE would just randomly collaborate with various cartoons. They did it with Scooby-Doo TWICE, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Surf's Up... almost all of them interestingly being Hanna-Barbera properties, except Surf's Up. Maybe WWE are just big HB fans haha.
At this point I'm surprised and strangely kinda disappointed they never crossed over with Yogi Bear and his crew lol, it would've been funny seeing real life wrestlers in anthropomorphic animal forms lmao.
Looking back at that weird era, I respect the fact WWE brought some much needed life back into some franchises that were all but dead by that point, namely Flintstones and Jetsons. I appreciate their nice choices of crossovers (at least in my very Scooby-Flintstones-Jetsons biased view haha).
They could've easily cashed in on some of the biggest, most obvious, most popular cartoons as picks for animated crossovers, but they didn't. They went for more unique odd ones at first sight, ones they seemingly enjoy the most, so credit to them on that.
Well, you could argue Scooby falls in the category of big popular franchise, but it's still a relatively niche franchise, considering many people only really know/remember the original series and maybe SDMI and Zombie Island.
And on that note, back in 2014, Scooby-Doo was definitely NOT an obvious pick for a crossover. There were NO Scooby crossover movies when WrestleMania came out (except Mask of the Blue Falcon I guess, but that one really didn't feel like a crossover to me), and while there had been a show dedicated to crossovers every episodes (NSDMo), that was over 40 years ago, so this stuff was no longer expected come 2014.
Now when we talk post-2014, that's a completely different story. WrestleMania birthed the Scooby crossover epoch, for better or worse. 10 of the last 13 Scooby movies have been more or less crossovers, plus the most recent show was a NSDMo revival, based on the idea of crossovers every episodes. Too much at this point, to say the least, and it pretty much started with WrestleMania. Can't really blame WWE for the trajectory WB chose to take afterwards though.

4/19/2022 06:21:58 pm

It was indeed a bizarre stretch lol. I remember being really surprised in 2012 when they first announced they were doing a crossover with Scooby. The only thing I can think of is maybe they signed some multi-movie deal with WWE, but even then, the question of how they decided to collaborate with WWE in the first place still remains lol.

I had never heard of Surf's Up before this and wasn't aware WWE had collaborated with that show. A quick Googling of it brought up the amusing search suggestion of "why is Surf's Up so damn good?" so apparently people like it lol.

It would have been hilarious to see WWE team up with Yogi Bear lol. I have no idea what they would have done with the plot, but I imagine it would have been quite interesting lol.

The Flintstones and Jetsons are among my favorite HB shows, so I was also really happy that WWE breathed some life back into them with these crossovers. You make a great point they could have just crossed over with any cartoon, so I'm glad they picked two of the more obscure ones. I particularly felt it fit really well with The Flintstones, as a few early episodes had Fred and Barney going to and/or watching wrestling matches. It also had the nostalgic vibe of the first season, which is when Fred and Barney were shown to be interested in wrestling, so that fit really well. I liked the Jetsons crossover, and I think I enjoyed the Flintstones one. I'm honestly blanking a little on what I thought of it lol, but I can't remember any criticisms other than Barney's voice was really annoying to me.

I suppose you're right Scooby is a bit more of a niche franchise. It feels weird to say, since it has been going for so long and consistently gets new content (unlike some others like Flintstones/Jetsons), but I think you're right. Honestly, I would blame some of that on WB's poor promotion of the recent shows. They put a lot into promoting the three 2010s shows in the first season, then by the time the second half of the first season comes around, the level of promotion slowly drops until there's nearly none at all. In the case of all three series, the US is always last to get some of the episodes and many fans end up watching recordings from other countries because it takes so long for those episodes to get to the US. Be Cool was the worst of it, where episodes were available almost a year in advance in other countries. The last 11 episodes of the series were the worst, since they were first aired in an overnight slot when almost no one would be watching. Even worse, they didn't even keep the timeslot they aired in consistent from night to night, which makes me almost feel they were intentionally sabotaging it. I can't think of any possible reason why they'd switch the timeslots every night when it was already in the worst timeslot possible when nothing important would be airing.

It is crazy to think that WrestleMania Mystery started this era of crossovers. I don't know what the film made money-wise, but I imagine it must have been good, given it kickstarted WB doing all these other crossovers. I also don't consider Mask of the Blue Falcon a crossover, since Blue Falcon was barely in it. As I've shared before, I also think the crossovers have gotten to be a bit much, where it is at times being used as an alternative to coming up with an original plotline. I don't hate any of the crossovers, but I would like to see more films that are just Scooby and the gang not crossing over with anything.

Surf's Up is actually a Sony animated movie from 2007. The WWE crossover was the sequel Surf's Up 2: WaveMania, a decade later. Yeah I know, has no bearing to the other crossovers lol. From everything I've heard, apparently it's absolutely awful, craps on everything the original film was trying to do and is easily the worst of these WWE animated crossovers. Never seen it myself, and I don't think I'm interested in ever seeing it.

Wrestle Maniacs (WNSD):

This was fun and enjoyable episode. The Titanic Twist was a great and original villain. Like he had two arms on one side. That’s so freaky. Man what happen to that wrestler in the flashback was so brutal.

I always thought this episode was kind of centered on Fred. When he first arrived at the wrestling federation, he was tearing up saying it’s so beautiful, he carry’s around emergency wrestling uniform, he got to participate in the match, he was going crazy about the wrestlers, and to top it all off, he was kidnapped. Like, there’s just something about his kidnapping that was so interesting. The gang going to Fred and being happy that he’s back was touching.

It was interesting to see that the culprits were Curt and Connie Crunch. I was always wondering who the culprit would be and how they would put on the costume.

The ending was nice with Malachi Crunch saying now this is what wrestling is all about family and celebrating like a wrestling family.

I really liked this episode, especially the villain! He was super creepy-looking. I thought Fred being kidnapped was really interestingly executed. It was cool how this episode focused on Fred. I remember being surprised about the culprit too when I first saw it, but it makes sense it was two people, since the Titanic Twist had four arms. Yeah, the ending was nice. :)

Scooby Doo:
Wrestlemania Mystery:
This was a pretty cool movie. John Cena, Sin Cara, Kane, Triple H, The Miz, Brodus Clay, Santino, Aj Lee, Mr. McMahon and Michael Cole were pretty good guest stars. John Cena and Sin Cara were the ones that really stood out. It was nice to have the wrestlers music play when ever they made a scene. I liked that some of the wrestlers went up to fight the ghost bear.

The Ghost Bear was a great and cool villain. I really like his design. I also like the ghost story of the Ghost Bear.I like how the Miz called him Yogi and Reuben called him Smokey.

A lot of callbacks in this movie. The opening of the movie showing elements of Scooby Doo Where Are You. Shaggy laughing after realizing that the so called monster was actually Scooby, the same things happen from Mystery Begins. Fred’s camera that contained evidence being destroyed by the Ghost Bear is just like how his camera had evidence but sank in quick sand. The mystery machine is redesigned to how it looked in Get A Clue.

It was funny the Shaggy broke the fourth wall saying that they wear the same clothes everyday because it’s so true they literary do we’re the same stuff everyday since 1969.

The wrestling match was great between Shaggy (Skinnyman), Scooby (Dead Meat), Kane, John Cena, Sin Cara and the Ghost Bear with them defeating the monster.

The reveal of the ghost bear to be Cookie I honestly was not expecting that. I mystery in this movie was really good. It was nice of the other wrestlers to welcome Ruben despite everything his uncle did. Kane congratulating Scooby and Shaggy was a sign of good sportsman ship. Scooby and Shaggy being awarded the championship belt and everyone cheering Scooby Doo was such a great way to end the movie.

I enjoyed this movie and the guest stars as well. The Ghost Bear was a neat villain, and I was really surprised about who the culprit ended up being! I liked the various callbacks throughout the film. Although I don’t really care for wrestling, I thought this film was pretty good considering! The ending was indeed very sweet.
