Weekly Poll #102

Since it's usually the series premieres that are talked about, I thought it might be fun to put a little spin on that question and ask what people's favorite episode to open a second season was. I know some people count the Scrappy episodes all as one show, in particular grouping the 1983 and 1984 episodes together, but I counted them all as separate shows for this poll given they all have different intros (even if sometimes the 1979 intro is spliced over them in repeat airings/on streaming services).

I went with Curse of The Collar. That episode was pretty dark for a series like A Pup Named Scooby Doo. The Ghost Of Buster Mcmuttmauler was so cool. It focused on Scooby’s Family.

Nowhere to Hyde for me . A top notch episode to start off the greatest season of Scooby imo.
Recipe for my Love is a great chase song and I think that Scooby giving Shaggy Scooby Snacks is heartwarming. And as for Hyde himself, "he's an ugly, bad fellow, that nobody can deny.'

It's unfair to judge all series the same because they don't all have continuity or overarching stories, but for me "The Night the Clown Cried" was a great second season opener. My second pick would probably be "Nowhere to Hyde". Season 2 of WAY is really good and that episode was a great introduction.

I absolutely agree and the same thing goes for this poll as with the original season premiere/finale poll and the article I did on the premieres and finales. For me, I decided to vote purely on how much I enjoyed the episodes rather than taking into account overarching plots/continuity and such.

I was just an inch away from going with "The Night the Clown Cried" but I went with some Fred time. But, they are tied for me and some of the best episodes from their series'

"Some Fred Time" was my first choice too. The humor in the episode was top notch and I thought the plot of the gang having to hide a mystery from Fred was quite unique.

I'm actually gonna go with a less popular option and choose Big Appetite in Little Tokyo. That episode's concept and ideas always captivated and intrigued me. I love it.
Shout out to Curse of the Viking Lake too, great classic TSDS season 2 episode. It's not one of my favorites of TSDS, but that's not saying much considering I adore TSDS. Same could be said for Nowhere to Hyde and most of the other season 2 premieres honestly. They tend to be great but not best of the series.
The Night the Clown Cried is a weird one for me, it's ok but never found it very enjoyable, and that clown grates on my nerves.

"Big Appetite in Little Tokyo" was definitely one of the more unique What's New episodes. I can't say I minded Crybaby Clown all that much, though "Night the Clown Cried" definitely wasn't my favorite of the options.

Never seen- Shaggy and Scooby World

10. Scooby Nocchio- Your middle of the road Scrappy short from what I remember. Pretty meh

9. Hot Hot Hot Sauce- Very disappointed by this one. I was happy to see the gang back in Nashville for the first time since Phantom of Country Music Hall, but the episode was very mid

8. Big Appetite in Little Tokyo- Usually What's New ranks pretty high in things like these, but I don't really like this episode. Very weird

7. Russia and the Caribbean- A usual Laff a Lympics episode from what I remember. Which is pretty good but nothing exceptional

6. The Night the Clown Cried- This one made me pretty sad. It is a good episode, but isn't really a fun watch to see Fred in this condition

5. Curse of the Collar- A big step up from number 6. We are getting into good territory here. Although i always preferred Were Doo of Doo Manor when it comes to episodes about Scooby's family in A Pup

4. Some Fred Time- Be Cool is a great show, so I am extremely pleased to see it have a high ranking in one of these types of rankings. Because it usually ends up on the lower side. But Some Fred Time is a highlight of the series, and deserves this spot

3. Mystery on Haunted Island- The three classic series take up the top spots here which isn't a surprise to me. This one is a blast. A huge step down from the previous Globetrotters episode in the season 1 finale in The Loch Ness Mess, but a ton of fun regardless

2. Curse of Viking Lake- Well this is the greatest season 2 in its entirety in the franchise. And here we have an episode that deserves a ton of more attention. PLEASE RELEASE IT TO DVD

1. Nowhere to Hyde- Easy choice. Nothing was even close. Nowhere to Hyde is now one of my top 5 episodes of all time, and still moving up on the list. It is an episode that makes me so ridiculously happy just watching. Best episode of season 2 of Scooby Doo Where Are You, and is in a vicious competition with What the Hex Going On and A Night of Fright is No Delight as my favorite of the series as a whole

11. Scooby Nocchio - typical Scrappy short, nothing much here.

10. Russia and the Caribbean - Very typical Laff-a-Lympics episode. I liked the Scooby-Doo twist this episode had with the pirate ghost in the final event, but otherwise not memorable at all.

9. The Phantom, The Talking Dog and the Hot Hot Hot Sauce! - Middle-of-the-road. I didn't enjoy Kacey as much as other guest stars because it didn't feel like she was all that into her role. Certainly not a bad episode though and there were elements I enjoyed.

8. Shaggy and Scooby World - I thought this was a really cute premiere. It was interesting to see the aftermath of Phibes getting the formula, and there were some good jokes in here with Shaggy and Scooby opening their own theme park.

7. Big Appetite in Little Tokyo - I do enjoy this one for its novelty, though it wasn't among my favorite premieres or WNSD episodes.

6. The Night the Clown Cried - Exact same reason as well as ranking. Liked the episode, but it was definitely very sad. Crybaby Clown was a bit of a weird villain lol.

5. Curse of the Collar - I wouldn't say it's a big step up from #6 for me, but I did love this episode. This episode has the darkest atmosphere of the entire series IMO, and the Ghost of Buster Mcmuttmauler was a creepy villain.

4. Curse of the Viking Lake - Amazing start to an incredible series. Super dark tone and I liked the viking ghosts. How is this not on DVD yet?!?

3. Nowhere to Hyde - It was hard to rank this one so low because I really love it. The Ghost of Mr. Hyde was such an amazing villain and I love the atmosphere of the episode.

2. The Mystery of Haunted Island - It's definitely a step down from "The Loch Ness Mess" like you said, but this was such a fun episode with the Globetrotters, especially the second part inside the haunted house.

1. Some Fred Time - One of the highlights of the series, amazing humor (especially the Vampire-Mummy-Werewolf from Outer Space lol) and super unique plot with the gang having to hide the mystery from Fred.

Yep, "The Mystery of Haunted Island" is one of my top episodes of the franchise, but "Some Fred Time" edges it out by just a little bit for its unique mystery/characterization and excellent humor. The humor in that episode was the best of the entire series IMO, and it's my favorite BCSD episode (although it's kind of a toss up between that and "Doo Not Disturb," as they're both amazing for different reasons).

Out of curiosity, is it "The Mystery of Haunted Island" or "Mystery on Haunted Island"? I thought it was the former, but now I'm worried I have the title wrong since that's happened a couple times (i.e. I thought "The Curse of the Viking Lake" was just "The Curse of Viking Lake" until a few years ago).

Given "overuse of donkey noises" I would have to guess "Scooby Nocchio" is #2 (there were way too many donkey noises in that episode lol), which makes "Nowhere to Hyde" #1.

Nowhere To Hyde:
This episode was a great season 2 premiere. The Ghost of Mr. Hyde was such an awesome villain. It was creepy that he was in the back of the mystery machine under the blanket and came out scaring Scooby and the gang out of the van. The part that was really creepy was him trying to turn Shaggy into a frog. I like the gang dressing up as Ghosts of Mr. Hyde in order to trap him. This episode was also the start of Scooby Doo music chase scenes.

Agreed! The Ghost of Hyde was a super creepy villain and the scene in the back of the Mystery Machine is quite creepy. I really enjoyed the introduction of chase songs with this season.

Mystery On Haunted Island:
Now this was was really good episode. It was the Globtrotters third appearance. They are the only guest stars two make three appearances in The New Scooby Doo Movies. They were great guest stars as always. This episode was spooky and creepy, especially when they where at the mansion. Man at the game when the Globtrotters we’re losing and the idea of them using ice to wake them up and play better was fun, funny, and great and they won the game. Their last episode was their best one.

This is one of my top episodes of not only this series, but the entire franchise. I think they were amazing guest stars and fit with the gang perfectly. I loved the spooky atmosphere of the episode and all the ghosts. There were some humorous moments on the ship, too. I wouldn't say this was the best Harlem Globetrotters episode, as I like "The Loch Ness Mess" better, but this was indeed an amazing episode.

The Curse of Viking Lake:
This episode was pretty dark and creepy. I liked the idea of Viking ghosts and they were great villains. The Viking ghost sneaking behind Uncle John Maxwell and watching from the window and Scooby not seeing him, and opening the window from the outside trying to get Scooby was beyond creepy. The cave part is what made this episode even more spooky especially when the Vikings went to Odin the Viking god that they worshiped and to trap the gang. Overall good way to start Season 2 of The Scooby Doo Show.

The viking ghosts were awesome villains! I've always thought the scene where the viking kept sneaking up to the window was super creepy too! The cave was quite spooky as well, though it was quite elaborate for them to pretend to worship the viking god Odin when they weren't real vikings lol.

Yep. Didn't really feel like much of a season premiere to me, whereas the season 1 finale ("Surprised Spies") felt at least a bit more finale worthy IMO.

Curse of The Collar:
This episode had a really dark tone for an A Pup Named Scooby Doo episode and that’s how much I love it. In the beginning, the wind blowing the bushes, The Ghost of Buster Mcmuttmauler rising out of the present and coming toward Shaggy and Scooby, kidnapping Ms. Knittingham, closing the fridge door, having his hand on Shaggy, appearing after a flash of lightning when the gang found his net, busting down the door and taking Scooby’s parents. I liked that Scooby didn’t need Scooby snacks to save his parents. I like the idea of a dog catcher ghost. The ending was great with Scooby’s siblings at the party socializing with the rest of the gang.

I've always appreciated this episode for how dark it is. Like you mentioned, it felt like they put a lot of extra atmospheric touches into it like the wind blowing in the bushes, the Ghost of Buster Mcmuttmauler popping out of the present, the hand on Shaggy, the dark room and the fridge, etc. No other episode has that, so I've always really appreciated how much went into the animation and tone of this episode. Yeah, it was sweet to see Scooby be brave when his parents were in trouble :)

Big Appetite in Little Tokyo:
This was a good episode. I like how this episode is a parody of Godzilla. The ancient one was pretty cool. He has the same voice of Aku from Samurai Jack. Dogbot and Scooby being jealous of Dogbot was just like how he was jealous of Robopup. Another call back to APNSD. The 30ft Shaggy Monster or Shagzilla was even cooler, especially when he roars zoinks. The chase scene was different as they were chase by police, not the monster. The ending was really sweet when Velma gave Dogbot to Elliot and he thanked her despite their differences. Also, the gang giving Scooby a hug was good way to end the episode.

The Ancient One was neat, although I always thought it was weird that they never explained if he was real or not. I also thought 30 Foot Shaggy was cool. The chase scene was also an interesting change-up. I enjoyed the ending too; it was very sweet :)

This episode was a good premiere. It was cool of Shaggy and Scooby opening their own amusement park. Reminds me of Shaggy and Scooby winning the build your own ride contest in Roller Ghoster Ride. Funny Jokes when they open their amusement park. Phibes getting his hands on the formula.

The Night The Clown Cried:
This episode was pretty damn good. It shows us that Crystal Cove has been under attack by Crybaby Clown ever since mystery inc broke up. Crybaby Clown is a weird but really cool villain. He’s basically the Joker in diapers. This episode introduced a new character Mayor Janet Nettles. A mysterious figure helping the new mayor find mystery inc. This episode show us what the gang has been doing ever since they went they’re separate ways. Scooby on a farm, Shaggy in military school, Fred finding his parents and looking like a hobo haha, the mysterious figure turned out to be Velma, (I honestly wasn’t expecting that). The gang is back together well almost. Daphne dates a famous actor and gives up mystery solving. Crybaby Clown mention classic villains: Redbeard’s Ghost and Mano Tiki Tika. They plan on trapping Crybaby Clown but the trap was a failure as they were missing someone. Fred even said “ we’re not a team not without Daphne” that part was sad. Overall really good season 2 premiere. Nearly as good as the season 1 premiere.

I agree this was a great episode. Yeah, Crybaby Crown was a pretty weird villain and "he’s basically the Joker in diapers" is a very accurate description lol. I've always liked Mayor Nettles as a character. I was shocked the mysterious figure turned out to be Velma too! This episode definitely had a lot of emotional moments with the gang. Yeah, I thought it was really cool symbolism that the Crybaby Clown trap failed because they were missing Daphne. I like the season 1 premiere better, but this was really good as well.

Some Fred Time:
This episode was great and humorous season 2 premiere. Like the humor in this episode was outstanding. The rich people in the beginning, Fred running, unmasking and saying who the monsters are and the gan following behind him and repeating after him in a tired out voice, he even went to unmask that biker, he attached Bellington and said “the butler did it”, Jack Landale saying “ No pictures”. The rest of the gang hiding a mystery from Fred was pretty unique. The motive was also pretty unique. Scooby said his catchphrase at the end of this episode. We don’t hear him say it that much in this series. Also, the plot of this episode is similar the special Beach Beastie. Both are about Freddy taking a break from an obsession (traps,mysteries), going to beach property owned by a family member of Daphne’s (Uncle Sandy Blake beach resort,Daphnes parents beach house), Fred managed to save the day in both episodes, proving that his obsessions actually are a good thing. Overall great season 2 premiere for Be Cool Scooby Doo.

The Phantom, The Talking Dog and The Hot Hot Hot Sauce:
I thought this episode was good. It reminded of The Phantom of The Country Music Hall. Both episodes have the word Phantom in them. Both episodes take place in Nashville. Guest stars are country music singers (Jerry Reed, Kacey Musgraves) who are doing a show, one performing a song, the other is doing a play. The monsters disrupting their shows and the culprit’s motives being related to money. The organ playing in this episode gave the episode a creepy vibe. The Phantom of Tallis Tagart was a good villain. A lot of call backs to previous Scooby Doo stuff. Trapdoor leading up to a showboat just like Which Witch is Which Shaggy, Scooby and Kacey running from the phantom on the rowing thing just like Shaggy and Scooby running from the Werewolf on the rowing thing from Who’s Afraid of The Big Bad Werewolf and the same with the Gator Ghoul from Gruesome Game of The Gator Ghoul. The phantom chasing Kacey and the gang on the showboat with the doors just like Captain SkunkBeard chasing Shaggy and Scooby with the doors from Pirates Ahoy.

I enjoyed the episode too. The villain was excellent, although Kacey wasn't one of my favorite guest stars. I have listened to some of her music and enjoyed it, but she didn't feel super into her role here. She certainly wasn't a bad guest star, though.
