The WarnerMedia Keynote speech from the TV Kids Summer Festival 2021 has given us a little more info on the new Velma series! Velma will be of East Asian decent in the show, and the show is taking place in "a different world" where there's no van. Scooby will also not appear at all in the show, though Shaggy, Daphne and Fred will appear. All this information is at the 21 minute mark of the video here.
Thanks so much to B for sharing this info with me! :)

Well no scoob does immediately lower the budget... doesn't mention the others but if you're not going to have scoob I wouldn't do most of them personally, just seems to invite trouble, the rest? *shrugs* could suck, could not, depends what happens, I thought this was an odd/kinda bad idea from the getgo, but we'll see.

I still don't feel like I have enough information to judge the series yet, personally. I really liked Daphne & Velma, and that didn't include Scooby, so I'm still looking forward to this.

That is very fair this can all change, but nothing I've heard has really sold me on the idea, if anything I'm wary leaning on "ok... it'll just be one show... we can get through it" 6/9/2021 12:53:54 pm
That’s a great way to look at it! I always want to give shows (and movies) at least a fair chance before I judge them, because it could be completely different than whatever people are guessing it’s going to be from the promotional stuff that’s being put out.

It does say it will feature the “4 key characters”, so yeah the rest of the gang is back!! Makes me sad to see all this criticism towards it. Am I the only one being so stoked about this? Waaaaay more interested in an iteration that fully overturns the elements of the show rather than a boring (Guess Who), bland (Guess Who), unoriginal (Guess Who), poorly written (Guess Who), dull copy of the “original formula”. It’s been 50 years you guys, they need to explore other places..

I'm excited the rest of the gang is back too! I've added that to the post, my apologies for not mentioning it. I'm looking forward to seeing the show too!

That makes me like it a lot less then, I like the idea of scoob being around since they were young kids, and since they aren't going to do him here, I'd prefer them not being there either honestly. I mean I hope it's good I just got a lot of red flags. 6/10/2021 12:22:05 am
Makes sense. I'm still open to whatever happens at this point, we'll just have to see how it is when it comes out.

Removing scooby doo isn't really going lower the budget that much or even at all giving the fact that it's animation

Fair, I thought it was live action, then I really question why a) have the other 3, and b) all these other changes, seems odd or like they're responding to pushback or something... 6/10/2021 12:23:22 am
Yeah, it's animated. I wouldn't say they're responding to any pushback, I think they just wanted to work the gang into the series similar to how they did with the Daphne & Velma novels, even if it was in a limited role.

I also find it disappointing that scooby will not appear in this and I dont approve of this idea at all. I just hope it won't be similar to the Daphne & Velma movie.

I respect your opinion, though I hope it is similar to the Daphne & Velma movie given I liked it so much haha.

My interest in this series has not risen at all so far, if anything it's gone down, because it seems like they are really trying to pander with this show, unfortunately.

If I remember right, didn't you like the Daphne & Velma book series (which has Scooby in a very minimal role)? I thought you said you did, but maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

I haven't read it. But as far as the Daphne & Velma film, I didn't like it, it felt like a Netflix teen movie. 6/9/2021 12:56:26 pm
Oops yeah that was my bad. I remember you commenting on the Bougie Count thing lol, but I just went back and looked at my review and I think I was mixing up you and ConallJT.

I don't really get their decsion for removing scooby if they wanted to go for a grounded approch they could just not make him talk

I think they could have done it without removing Scooby too...the Daphne & Velma novels show that, IMO. Scooby just appears Shaggy's normal dog in that series and can't speak, and personally, I think it works fine. The main focus of the series is on Daphne and Velma and I'm fine with that.

Although I 'm happy that the rest of the gang (except scooby for some reason) I'm worried that they are going to have them start of as bullies then they eventually become friends

Are you thinking that because of Mystery Begins, where Fred was kind of a bully at first before getting to know the gang?

I am very much looking forward to this series! Who cares if it isn’t what people are used to, we have a million things of Scooby movies and episodes of that already.

I couldn't agree with you more. It's totally fine if this series isn't people's thing. It's impossible for everyone to like every single Scooby property out there, so if people don't like this series, then they can just wait for the next one. This series being different doesn't ruin the existence of any of the other series. WB isn't stealing all the previous series back or anything haha. People can still go back and watch all their favorite series, even if this one isn't their cup of tea. There will be plenty other more traditional Scooby series coming for many decades, likely.

My biggest fear is that they'll portray Fred as an arrogant jock (live-action movies), when he shines best as a kind & honest engineer type. But I'll give it a chance anyway, hoping it'll get the characters right.

I think it's very likely that they will portray Fred as that, since they've used that trope so many times before in the live-action movies. Hope I'm wrong though!

Scooby-Doo has been know to be missing before he was absent in the Daphne & Velma movie. I hope the show doesn't flop or anything.I am bit worried that some fans will refuse to watch it since Scooby will not be featured in it. if it gets too many negative reactions wheh it comes out then I suspect it will get canned rather quickly.

I think many people will refuse to watch the show because Scooby's not in it, but at the same time, I don't think this show is going to end Scooby or anything. The show was advertised as an adult incarnation of Scooby, so the writers knew they were taking a risk and wanted to separate it from the kids series. If this show doesn't do well, then they'll just know not to make another adult incarnation of Scooby and go back to the kids' series.

I will say this and anyone who disagrees please feel free to correct me. But it’s always bothered me how there like a hundred (I know I’m exaggerating he he) Scooby incarnations and they never seem to last. Like look at Flinstones. They have hundreds of episodes but only around 3-4 incarnations. But the Flinstones series actually last. Scooby series last two seasons and it’s like NEXT! I feel it’s starting to make the series seem a bit cluttered tbh.

The thing is, though, that the last few incarnations have had 52 episodes each. Just because they are divided into two seasons doesn't mean they don't last.

I agree with that. I also kind of like that some Scooby series are shorter, because it gives an opportunity for the franchise to grow without it being "well, it's season 49 of Where Are You!" Different series explore different aspects of the franchise, which is kinda why I like that the Scooby series last for a couple seasons before beginning a new series. That's not to say that I wouldn't want a series to last, but I also like that different series explore different things. Just my opinion.

I think the reason, why many Scooby-Doo shows last only two seasons is because the writers fear that if a single incarnation of it were to last longer then that then it may become starting getting dull after a while to the audience.

I would agree with your first paragraph. I don't think series would necessarily get dull in every case, but some series like Guess Who would get kinda stale after a bit if it was just the same thing over and over for years on end.
