Trick or Treat, Scooby-Doo Trailer

8/22/2022

The official trailer for Trick or Treat, Scooby-Doo! has just been posted on YouTube! The movie features Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? animation, and will be animated by Snipple Animation,  the same company who animated Guess Who. No date was given in the trailer, but since it's a Halloween film, I think it's safe to assume this will come out in October. As previously announced, Amazon France has already announced that the release date in France will be October 25.

Trick or Treat is also now listed on both TVGuide and the British Film Broadcasting System site, further confirming its legitimacy. The Australian release date is October 19.

FINALLY SOMETHING!!! And in the Guess Who Style that’s new too! When is it coming in the US/everywhere else? Probably the same day?

We're not sure on a date yet, but I'm assuming sometime around Halloween since it's coming out in France on October 25 (and because the movie is Halloween-themed).

Hoping for the best but from trailer and animation style, this looks an absolute mess. I just hope I'm wrong, premise looks half decent.

The premise seems incredibly different from anything that's been done before. I'm also hoping for the best but yeah, I agree it does look a bit strange on first watch of the trailer!

The animation looks awful, there just seems too much going on in the trailer and looks like way to much fan service again rather than try something new.. And not our first Scooby media, we've had comics, a fan series and a book so far, not much but far from nothing.

First official Scooby movie or show for this year…don’t judge a book by its cover.

We all love Scooby Doo here so you'd be silly to call us haters. Just face it, 2020-2022 Scooby Doo has been pretty weak.

To be honest I'm not hating, I've just been let down so many times past few years with poor Scooby movies, Return zombie island, 13 Ghosts etc. It is just better not to get your hopes up and be pleasantly surprised if it turns out not to be a pile of poop.

@Jayden, surprised you didn't include 2019 in there, that's easily the worst year for Scooby in a long-ass time.

the trailer looks terrible and I'm not even talking about the art style (which is okay, I guess)... but it's so strange... it's so badly structured, it lacks a soundtrack, no climax, it looks like a last minute thing... I fear it will be an hour long Guess Who episode, you know what I mean: flat

The trailer did seem a bit less cinematic than a lot of the previous trailers have been. I was wondering where the soundtrack was too. In terms of it being a last-minute thing, I could absolutely see them pulling this together last minute if this was finished right before the chaos of the merger. I can't really tell from the trailer if this is going to have the exact same tone as Guess Who, but I'm hoping it doesn't personally.

It definitely has a different feel than the other recent Scooby movies. If it were a Goblin King sort of situation, I wouldn't mind the film being a bit weird.

I love this!! The animation looks great, and it's finally a step away from the same DTV look we've had for ages. It reminds me of when all the early 2000s movies had the What's New look to match the era! I hope we get more in this guess who style.

Also, I couldn't help but notice the villains in the cells all look like real villains from past series. Like one of the Skeleton Men guys from TSDS in the left cell. Even the prisoner at around 0:37, looks identical to one of the new scooby doo mysteries villains, from the episode 'Showboat Scooby'.

If they are in-fact including older villains/monsters from series other than WAY? I will be so happy. I've gotten kind of bored to death of only ever seeing The Creeper, Ghost Clown, Space Kook etc have cameos. I'm hoping they gone more obscure and covered stuff from all eras.

Agreed! Certain aspects of the trailer seem a bit weird, but weird can definitely be good as we saw with Goblin King (at least IMO). I'd love another wacky Halloween film. I hadn't thought of it in comparison to the WNSD era films like that, but that would be interesting if we got a bunch of DTVs in the Guess Who style.

I noticed that little Easter egg with the prisoners too! Hopefully we'll get a closer look during that scene when the movie comes out, because I agree with you they do kind of look like old villains. I would be really happy if they did include those villains, even if it was just for a brief cameo, because IMO they've been overdoing it lately with referencing the Where Are You villains.

Are those monster versions of Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby? That’s wild! This movie looks fun.
Now the animation. If this movie is happening in the Guess Who universe, then it’s great!
But if this animation becomes the standard for all the movies going forward then…woof. I will adjust to it if that’s the case.

8/22/2022 05:40:25 pm

First off, I am glad that we are getting SOMETHING! I am hoping for the best no matter what

With that being said, I have a few concerns (but I am NOT going to overreact like has been a trend regarding a certain show…)

For starters, listen I hate to be that guy, but I have never been huge on the Guess Who animation. I actually prefer Be Cool’s animation to this. This animation does some characters better than others. Daphne’s design has always felt… weird… to me and I’m not even sure how to explain it. I think it might be something with her eyes, I dunno. All of this is to say, animation isn’t and has never been a dealbreaker for me. I just would’ve rather stayed in the other DTV style, but not really that big of a deal

Secondly, this all just looks very… bizarre, yet I am unsure at this point if it will be in an interesting way. I guess weird is an upgrade from the incredibly dull Guess Who series, but again, I’m not even sure if this will be weird in a gripping or even interesting way. I’m not particularly gripped by the plot from the trailer, it just seems strange and kinda doing the same idea as Monsters Unleashed or even Frankencreepy to an extent

Next, you can tell just from the trailer that it is VERY meta. Yet, it doesn’t feel like (from the trailer at least) it is done in a very clever way, like say, A Scooby Doo Valentine

Overall, I have concerns, but I am hoping for the best. These are just concerns. I still have some sort of optimism because a trailer isn’t going to make me overreact. Because, hey, a bad trailer doesn’t hurt anything if the movie is actually good

I would say of this animation, Daphne's design has always been my least favorite. I don't dislike the animation, but it's not my favorite either. I'd be totally down for weird if it were like Goblin King. It definitely seems like there will be a lot of meta joke. Scooby even says "this whole franchise is named after me!" lol. I would say my opinion is the same as yours: it definitely looks weird and the Guess Who animation wouldn't have been my first pick, but I'm looking forward to seeing the film and don't plan to judge it before I've seen it.

Maybe I'm just too optimistic, but I feel like I'll love this movie.

The early 2010's DTV's were some of the best IMO, but while still having standouts, the overall quality of them started to wane. I couldn't imagine what style could replace it, and I am pleasantly surprised.

It's really interesting to see the variety of opinions on this film! I completely agree with your opinion about the 2010s DTV quality starting to wane as it went on. The later 2010s films weren't bad, but they weren't that same level of top-tier quality that the early 2010s movies were as the decade went on.

It's not that I don't want to seem ungrateful. It has a kind of interesting story, but it's so cheap looking, as in Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?: The Movie. 22 minutes was bad enough, now we're looking at least 80 minutes.

I'll always support Scooby, but at this point, I just want it die a peaceful death.

I mean, yes, it's cheap looking, but it may not have been cheap to make. Is this the kind of content David Zaslav is looking to aim for? Seems contradictory. But then he probably has no say over this particular content.

I'll reserve comment on the plot until I've watched the whole movie. Quick thoughts: (1) Lol it's the Himalayan cat man from Scrappy shorts! Strange that they're bringing him back of all things, but I'm not complaining. (2) Some of the cuts seemed to be distorting faces/bodies to Adult Swim levels of gross. E.g., 0:28. (3) I wish the Guess Who door gags did more to mix it up.

Best Scooby-Doo Movie Trailer Ever 🤎

Reply
Becker
8/23/2022 04:00:37 am

Watching it a day after, the trailer worked a bit better. Mostly because I didn't really focus on the monstrous gang the first time around, but that part of it is actually pretty cool. It's done differently enough to not be a copy of A Scooby-Doo Valentine, since those were doppelgängers, while this time they're like the gang reincarnated into creatures from hell lmao.

I'll also say that it seems more entertaining than most Guess Who episodes. I don't know if that's because there's no guest star to steal the spotlight while written poorly, or becuase the long runtime allows for more development of the story which was usually compromised in Guess Who. But the concept itself for Trick or Treat also appears to be more unique and fun than your average Guess Who episode.

The comedy in the trailer is hit or miss, some of it works, like 0:20 and 0:28, but some of it is cringy, like 1:08 and maybe even 1:18 honestly, Scooby's meta joke didn't land for me, I had 0 reaction to it. We'll see how the laughs works in the actual film. Also, the whole gang shouting "Coco Diablo" at 1:00 made me cringe too cuz it reminds me of how the gang would do the same with the celebs in Guess Who. Oh, and LOL at 1:04, Fred there was funnier than it was probably intended.

I think part of why the animation looks slightly different from Guess Who is that it's more lively, there's a lot of frames intentionally off model compared to Guess Who, and raggedness fits that kind of stuff better than crispness. The bits of comedy I mentioned worked in the trailer are mostly thanks to the animation being off-model, so the fact they're using that to their advantage is why I would say I do like the look of this movie, even though I definitely prefer the 2010s DTV style.

Also it doesn't seem to copy Frankencreepy since the former villains appear to be a lot more just in the background, the focus being mostly on the monstrous gang and Coco. I'm curious what culprits we're gonna get besides the obvious SDWAY ones (maybe someone can somehow identify the ones at 0:40, I'm not very good with that). Good they're not really focusing on rehashed villains imo.

No idea how the whole Coco side of the movie will play out, they've shown no explanation to how she was able to create costumes week in & week out and not get caught for so long. And why exactly is she needed to defeat the monstrous gang. We also don't know what her personality is like yet either, she hasn't even said a word.

Lastly, the more you sit on it, the less sense it makes to release a trailer for a DTV movie without announcing a date right when other countries are giving release dates left, right & center, which are only two months from now. Just put a release date at the end of the trailer dammit! Lol

The bearded guy at 0:40 is the only convict I recognized off the bat, but I couldn't place my finger on who exactly he was. I knew I had seen him before, but I realize now that's Dr Grimsley from A Creepy Tangle in the Bermuda Triangle! I like that they're bringing back some non-SDWAY villains. Helps that I love that TSDS episode too.

I just watched it again myself, and it's been growing on me too. I understand people's concern about it just being a 72-minute long Guess Who episode, and I think that would be a bit of a stretch myself, but I absolutely agree this looks a lot more unique than the typical Guess Who episode. The trailer is very chaotic by itself, so I can only imagine how much is going on in the actual movie haha.

The comedy didn't really make me laugh either, but it's not concerning to me. Scooby's meta joke about the franchise being named after him was a bit cringey, but I won't judge it based on that. Re: the gang shouting "Coco Diablo"...right?!? Yeah, that definitely gave me major Guess Who flashbacks with the whole gang shouting the guest star's name. I didn't really like that in the series, so it's unfortunately they're bringing it back here (but that's a very minor criticism).

Tbh, I've seen a lot of people making comparisons to FrankenCreepy and I don't get it. It very much seems like Coco is the villain and that she's controlling the costumes, rather than a revenge scheme by past villains. The trailer was definitely pretty vague about Coco's involvement in the plot or how she was creating all these costumes, so I guess we'll have to wait and see how it turns out.

I was extremely confused too as to why they released a trailer without a date. To be fair though, this wasn't uploaded by the official WB channel, it was uploaded by a user named Scoobyverse, so maybe it was an unfinished version of the trailer where they didn't add the date yet? I don't know if it's the same Scoobyverse that's commented on this blog a bunch recently, but I'm thinking it is.

I didn't catch that it was Dr. Grimsley either, but that's great! I'm really happy that WB has taken a hint and included some more obscure villains, rather than just the same SDWAY ones over and over.

The tone seems zanier than Guess Who. Which is a plus due to Guess Who's dullness. But I hope it's not just chaos for the sake of chaos. Not much plot shown in the trailer despite the interesting premise.

I wouldn't say I laughed either, but I liked the moments of wacky animation at 0:20 and 0:28. Like I said, that's probably why the animation looks a bit different from Guess Who, it's more off-model and more expressive (the quality might be slightly worse from a technical standpoint too though). I still really like the 2010s animation style and prefer it though.

I can see why people would make Frankencreepy and Scooby Valentine comparisons, as some ideas are similar in a sense, but the approach is very different to stand on its own.

Whoever runs that Scoobyverse channel is definitely an insider. I'm sure we'll get soon a trailer from the actual WB channel, probably with a release date.

A bit sad that a TSDS villain can be now considered obscure, since that show is almost as iconic and remembered by people as SDWAY itself (as seen from Cyber Chase, Monsters Unleashed), but apparently WB doesn't think so and the only classic series that exists to them is SDWAY. Happy they're at least bringing back non-SDWAY villains in this film.

WildwindVampire link
8/23/2022 02:29:20 pm

Agreed, I'm hoping the tone isn't just a bunch of chaos either, but I'm glad it's livelier than Guess Who.

That's a great point that the tone is a lot more expressive with this animation. I'll be curious to see if the whole movie is like that, or if it's just a few scenes.

The rollout for this film has been kind of weird in general. Typically it's a big trailer release immediately followed by the press release, so it's odd we got the trailer from an insider the day before we got the press release, and still no trailer posted officially by WB.

Yeah, it is a bit sad, but honestly I'm just happy we're getting something different than SDWAY over and over again haha.

As time went by, I liked less and less the animation that was made in South Korea for the DTVs. Snipple has much better quality, fluidity and keyframes... But the characters are off model and uncanny. I know it's intentional, but it doesn't look as good with Scooby-Doo as it does with Looney Tunes Cartoons.

Guess Who? designs are not awfully bad, but I feel they're lacking soul. I wish movies were made with the Mystery Incorporated designs, at least those weren't off model, especially Daphne.

But it's not all Snipple's fault, this style was used in the first season of Gues Who? as well, when the series was still animated in South Korea. As I understand it the change of animation studio happened in the second season but the style and models were still the same, only now the animation was less stiff.

The plot is different and I don't dislike it, in fact I was surprised for the better that the doppelgangers are so gruesome. Fred is not only missing a leg but his intestines are sticking out of one side. Gorey hanging guts wasn't something I expected to see in Scooby-Doo since that headless zombie in Zombie Island, but I'm in for it TBH.

The plot is different to everything we have seen, in fact I was surprised for the better that the dopelgangers are so gruesome. Fred is not only missing a leg but his intestines are sticking out of one side. Hanging guts wasn't something I expected to see in Scooby-Doo since that beheaded zombie in Zombie Island, but I like it. Velma's scene with the syringes is also pretty... risque? But c'mon people, yet ANOTHER "the Mystery Machine has been destroyed"? I'm so sick of Mystery Machine drama, leave that poor van alone.

I wish the DTV plots were a bit more adult, not pure nightmare fuel, but that they keep the viewer on edge.

Coco Diablo looks interesting, she's like a seamstress that makes all the villain costumes. At least that's the vibe I get from her, because of the measuring tape she wears.

And yeah, the trailer's editing is rather bland and confusing, it also lacks more appropriate music, overall the trailer is quite Guess Who-ish, and by that I mean totally flavorless.

I wouldn't say I hate the animation either, but it isn't my favorite. Daphne's design in particular looks off as you pointed out.

I hadn't really paid attention to that detail of the Doppelgangers, but yeah, they do look pretty gruesome! It's cool they took a darker approach to those designs. I also like films with a more mature tone like Zombie Island and Witch's Ghost, so it would be cool if it had that sort of tone (though I don't think it will).

The trailer was definitely very chaotic and seemed a bit more thrown-together than previous trailers. That's not necessarily a diss, more just an observation.

Alright, there’s a lot to unpack here!

First up, the animation! I actually have always really liked Guess Who’s character designs. I think the designs for that show are a great blend of bouncy cartoon look and the more real look of the usual DTVs we get! The only problem I have with this is the actual animation itself looks to be a bit choppier and strange. This is definitely not how Guess Who’s animation looks I don’t think, and that quality of motion is both unique to this movie and also seemingly the trend for WB’s DTV movies in general at the moment.

I am happy that we may finally be getting a new era of DTV movies after so long with the same style, but I also recognize the cheaper look. It reminds me of King Tweety (underrated and decently funny movie) and Tom and Jerry: Cowboy Up! (Which I haven’t seen).

The story here looks absolutely insane and I’m all about that! There were some cool references to old Scooby episodes that I would have never expected and on top of that I think that this meta plot is kinda cool. The idea of an origin for all these supernatural costumes is certainly interesting and having monster versions of the gang as the villains is super cool!

I also like just how expressive and wacky this animation got at times, and to me that is reflective of how these character designs and this animation style can benefit the DTV movies. I have only seen the first 13 episodes of Guess Who (I’m getting to the rest someday, I promise!), but I have to admit that I don’t think this show was as wacky as this trailer was. Which is cool to see, it’s giving me what I think is maybe the best quality about the last show and also some new qualities to enhance it.

I do find it odd that we’re getting another Halloween movie so close to the previous one, and I do hope that we continue to get DTVs (I believe besides Krypto we have one other unnamed one that was announced way back when?) so that we aren’t just stopping for a while with such a random entry. No matter the case, I’m looking forward to new Scooby content and especially one with a trailer that I personally really enjoyed!

Here’s a link to the Scooby subreddit post in which a writer for the movie is answering questions for fans it seems: https://www.reddit.com/r/Scoobydoo/comments/wuz85v/trick_or_treat_scooby_doo_trailer/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

There's no other potential upcoming film besides Krypto Too that we know of actually.

It's really interesting to see how different people's perspectives are on this! I agree that the animation definitely looks a lot choppier than Guess Who did. The tone also seems much wackier than the show was, like you said. I also am really intrigued by the meta-ness of this, and I'm happy that we're getting some more obscure references.

That's really cool that a writer has been answering questions on there!

I feel bad about having a bit more of a pessimistic approach, but I was thinking that this is more of a leftover from before Zaslav came in that they just decided to release since it was already done. I'm thinking this is just a one-off and not necessarily that this is starting a whole new era of DTVs. I really hope I'm wrong though.

Speaking of animation, Not to be a negative Nancy but... the art designs for these monstrous doppelgänger versions of Mystery Inc look rather a little too gruesome and disturbing for a kids movie.

That's fair, I personally didn't find them overly gruesome but I can see why somebody would.

Oh no! I did not say I didn't like the way they looked.

I think they look really good, not to mention very well detailed and potentially scary looking.

I was just concerned that some people would find their appearances too unsettling for a younger audience.

Oh okay, I get what you're saying now. That makes sense. Sorry about the misunderstanding!

🎵"Halloween, down goes the sun
The scooby gang is out for fun
Tricks & Treats, round every bend
It's getting dark as daytime ends

Well, it's the night
Ghosts and Goblins play
Everyone knows it's that time of day
All the adults say ghosts can't be
But all the ghosts just disagree

Skeletons, ghosts, pumpkins too
Let's dress up, so fun to do
Scooby and the gang will make a scene
So give a scream, cause it's Halloween
(Give a scream, cause it's Halloween)

Well, in every town on every street
All the monsters and ghoulies meet
Stop to stop and in between
Hey, give a scream!
It's Halloween

(Halloweeen!)

Oobie, doobie, ra ra ra
Is that a ghost that Scooby saw?
Oobie, doobie, run run run
He'll be glad when this night is done

Well, Halloween, down goes the sun
The scooby gang is on the run
All the adults say ghosts can't be
But all the ghosts just disagree

Skeletons, ghosts, pumpkins too
Let's dress up, so fun to do
Scooby and the gang will make a scene
So give a scream, cause it's Halloween

Skeletons, ghosts, pumpkins too
Let's dress up, so fun to do
It'll be such a spooky scene
With Scooby and the gang on Halloween (Come on!)
With Scooby and the gang on Halloween
(Yeah! Trick or treat!)"🎵

i hated this. orginally i wanted scooby doo to be kept away from disney but honestly, they might actually do something right. So far the best thing to come out in the past 10 years was the batman movie, one minute mystery, the first part of the third act of the courage movie, and the stage fright.
