Ted Nichols Passes Away at 97

Ted Nichols, who composed much of the score for Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?, has sadly passed away at 97. Nichols also conducted, composed and arranged music for other iconic Hanna-Barbera cartoons such as The Flintstones and Josie and the Pussycats. His music was used throughout the Scooby-Doo franchise through The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo.

Nichols was passionate about music throughout his entire life. He began playing the violin when he was 10. He played in the U.S. Navy Band after being enlisted in 1946. Later, he became commanding officer of the U.S. Air Force's Bandsman Training School. He held a wide variety of music-related jobs after leaving the armed forces. After graduating college with a degree in music, Nichols directed youth symphonies and college bands. He'd also go on to sing with the Dapper Dans of Disneyland in the late 1950s. When he got a job as a minister of music for a church, he met William Hanna, and the rest is history.

Nichols died from a long battle with Alzheimer's. He passed away in his home in Auburn, Washington on January 9. However, the announcement from The Hollywood Reporter just came yesterday. Thanks to Scoobies for sharing the news!

Ted Nichols gave us such iconic music. At least he got to live all the way to 97 years of age. Rest in peace.

RIP Ted Nichols. His music had a fantastic impact on both The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo, which is no small feat considering the two series have such different atmospheres. Throughout their careers, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera demonstrated the importance they placed on music, particularly with the synchronization of character movements to the music, often played on the piano. Ted Nichols can be proud to have been their trusted collaborator for all those years.

Thanks for the precision ! It seems logic that Coolsville and Crystal Cove are near of each other. The only exception regarding Coolsville I can think of would be Monsters Unleashed, where the plot is darker than other Scooby series.

I was expecting George to get fired between 20 and 30 times, but I was surprised by how few times he was appointed vice president. He was vice president almost twice as often in season 1 (24 episodes) as in season 2, which has 41 episodes! If I were George, I'd ask that my career be limited to comics. I started reading them on the Internet Archive to continue this project (although I think I'll take a little break from the Jetsons), and the 1970s stories are too short for Mr. Spacely to start toying with George's position. He does get fired occasionally, but there's another story where he ends up as vice president! My experience with the comics was punctuated by some oddities, though. First, in one story published by Charlton, Mr. Spacely is constantly referred to as Mr. Cogswell by George for no apparent reason. In several others, Elroy has a friend named Sum Toi. I didn't focus on him since Mr. Spacely never appears alongside him, but after some research, I discovered that he's a character who plays the same role as The Great Gazoo. The gold medal goes to the first story in the first issue of Charlton, where George gets rid of Rosie, who has become defective. The Jetsons manage to find her at the junkyard, but with several identical robots. At the end of the story, it's unclear whether they recovered the real Rosie. Since this comic was published before the 1980s, it's possible that the Rosie in season 2 of The Jetsons isn't the same as the one in season 1.

I read the fun facts and articles I missed, and I found the one about how the gang members met particularly interesting. Although I love A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, the approach taken by Mystery Begins seems more successful to me. The gang members have quite different personalities and tastes, and it's hard to imagine them suddenly becoming friends. Mystery Begins does a good job of showing the context in which their friendship developed. Personally, it seems more logical to me that the members of Mystery Inc. met in elementary school, but without explanation, I don't see how Shaggy and Daphne, for example, could have had anything in common with Fred, who emerges as team leader despite not particularly excelling in that role in the series. Furthermore, this idea was probably abandoned, but if Hanna-Barbera and later Warner Bros. maintained the age difference established by Where Are You, it's unlikely the gang members would have been in the same school year at the same time. This makes their meeting, while not impossible, less logical than if they had already been in the same class.

That's a good theory about the Mystery Machine! I don't know if you have it, but I have a quiz on my Where Are You DVD where this very question is asked. So I thought the answer must be in the series, but it isn't. From memory, it was one of Fred's or Daphne's family members who bought the van, but I would be curious to do it again to see if the hypothesis favored by What's New is among the choices.

Yeah, he did an incredible job creating music for shows with such different tones! He's left an amazing legacy.

That's really cool that you're delving into the comics too! I'm happy to hear that George actually got appointed vice president in one of the comics. He certainly deserves it after all the back and forth decisions lol. That's really surprising they referred to Spacely with the wrong name! I wonder if the writer was unfamiliar with the show and accidentally got the names mixed up. Interesting to know The Jetsons comics featured a Gazoo-like friend for Elroy! I had no idea the franchise had a character like that. The plot of them getting rid of Rosie and being uncertain if they got the real one back is really surprising! Makes me very curious as to if the Rosie post-season 1 is the real version of her or not.

I'm a little surprised that you like Mystery Begins better since you're such a big Pup fan! Although I prefer Pup, I also liked that Mystery Begins showed specifically how they became friends. I enjoyed seeing them get closer over the course of the film. For sure, logically it's a bit surprising that the gang became friends in Pup since they're so different personality-wise. It's neat that we have so many different origin stories in the franchise exploring different aspects of them meeting. With the live-action series' premise is being so different from what's been explored before, I'll be interested to see how the origin story is handled.

Which Where Are You DVD do you own? I own the Complete Seasons 1 and 2 set, rather than the complete series. The special feature you're talking about might be on my DVD too, but I haven't played the trivia quiz if it's on there. It was Daphne's dad who bought the van. I'm pretty sure they're pulling the answer from The Mystery Begins, where it's said that Daphne's dad bought the van for the groundskeeper, but then later gave it to Daphne.

RIP Ted Nichols (1928-2026), you will be missed.

That composer also even composed music for "The Perils of Penelope Pitstop" and "Wacky Races" (1968) as well, and i'm sad that he passed away on January 9, 2026 from Alzheimer's disease.
