Several Voice Actors for 2020 Theatrical Film Announced

Thanks to ComicBook.com, several voice actors for the currently untitled 2020 theatrical film have been announced! It appears WB has taken the "celebrity voice" route for this film, casting Will Forte as Shaggy, Gina Rodriguez as Velma, and Tracy Morgan as Captain Caveman. Scooby-Doo will still be voiced by Frank Welker, though Fred and Daphne's voice actors have still not been announced at this time. ComicBook.com has also provided a plot summary, which appears to be very close to the same one we were given several years ago.

The animated reboot sees the Mystery Inc. gang join forces with other Hanna-Barbera characters to save the world from the scheming Dick Dastardly, the always-losing menace of Wacky Races who was accompanied by sidekick Muttley.

This negates the theory which some of us had of them pushing back the movie from its original 2018 release date to revamp the plot.

Additionally, Matthew Lillard and Grey DeLisle-Griffin, the typical voice actors for Shaggy and Daphne, have spoken out on Twitter, revealing that they were never told that they wouldn't be voicing their normal characters in the film, and in fact found out at the same time the general public did. Here's their comments on the matter:

Mindy Cohn, who was the previous voice of Velma before WB replaced her (without her consent in the matter) in Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, also replied to Matthew Lillard's tweet.

It is really sad how poor the current voice actors have been treated in this instance. It's pretty horrible to have to find out from a random fan online that you've been replaced.

Interesting that the usual voice actors were changed for BCSD in Spanish too.

Honestly I don´t think Will Forte can do a good job, he´s not even funny, all this " let´s put celebrities" thing is out of control.

I haven't watched much with Will Forte so I'm not sure tbh. But I agree that the "let's put celebrities in EVERYTHING!" trend is getting a bit obnoxious.

I've never understood the "celebrity voices for animated movies" thing.
99% of the money animated movies make is from (big spoilers) KIDS! And even bigger spoilers, no kid gives two craps about/even know who Will Forte or Gina Rodriguez are, so all they've done is get rid of the regular voice actors to replace them with "big" actors yet that accomplishes absolutely nothing, not one extra ticket gets sold by doing this.

"Big spoilers" lol. I don't understand the "celebrity voices for animated movies" trend either. Seems like a bit of a cop-out, as it's a very uncreative way to draw people in. They could easily draw people in by having a very high-stakes or unique plot, instead of just taking the easy way out and saying "Hey, did you know (insert random celebrity here) is in this film?!?"

I totally agree with your point, though as a potential counterargument, most kids aren't the ones buying their own tickets. Parents are usually the ones buying tickets for their kids so they can watch the film with them. As odd as it is to say, picking those particular celebrities to voice them was probably targeted towards the adults who are deciding whether their kids see the movie or not. If they pick celebrities which are memorable to the adult generation, the adults are more likely to suggest that they go to that particular movie with their kids, because a celebrity that they know and like is in it.

Definitely a notable point about the parents and their own familiarity with the big celebs. That has crossed my mind before in the past, but at the same time I think to myself: if unknown actors John Smith and Dave Jones ended up voicing Buzz and Woody in Toy Story instead of big hollywood A-listers Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, how much money would it have made then? the same? a little bit less? a *considerable* amount less? I just can't see how that could ever be the case. I want the data, movie studios! Lol

I honestly have no idea. I don't think it would be a considerable amount less though, as Scooby is still a pretty big franchise in itself and people would come to see the movie regardless. I'd say probably somewhat less. But yeah, I want the movie studio data too! Lol

Sorry but whose Will Forte?? Never heard of him. I’d class Matthew lillard as a bigger name than will forte

He's in a popular show right now called "The Last Man on Earth." I don't know much about him either, as I've never seen that show.

Bad news for the english speakers. I mean you hear theese voices for at least a decade. And theese celebs are really celebs? Cause i hear them for the first time. They didn't treat the original actors well. They respected and kept Frank Welker at least.

Thankfully here in Greece we have the same actors for at least 10 years now.

I fear that Grey has probably been replaced as well (even though there's been no official confirmation / announcement of it), given she tweeted about it too.
