I was just sent this official press release by a contact I have in WB marketing.
WARNER BROS. HOME ENTERTAINMENT BRINGS VIEWERS AN ALL-NEW ORIGINAL ANIMATED FILM WITH THE RELEASE OF “SCOOBY-DOO! RETURN TO ZOMBIE ISLAND” AVAILABLE ON DIGITAL SEPTEMBER 3, 2019 AND DVD OCTOBER 1, 2019 BURBANK, CA (July 11, 2019) – Pack your Scooby Snacks and join the Mystery Inc. gang as the teen sleuths embark on a wild and spooky vacation with zombies and cat people on Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island, an all-new, original film. A follow-up to the classic, best-selling Scooby-Doo! film, Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, this new animated adventure finds Scooby-Doo and his pals taking a much-deserved vacation to a tropical island. Instead of getting rest and relaxation, however, they find themselves wrapped up in one of their biggest mysteries yet! Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the animated film arrives from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on Digital starting September 3, 2019 and on DVD October 1, 2019. Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island will be available on Digital ($14.99 SRP) and DVD ($19.98 SRP). On Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island, Scooby-Doo and his pals win an all-expense paid vacation and embark on a trip of a lifetime to a tropical paradise. Their destination however, turns out to be Zombie Island. As soon as they arrive, they realize the place looks strangely familiar and is reminiscent of a trip they took years ago, in which they became wrapped up in a mystery involving zombies. The gang soon learns that their trip to paradise comes with a price when the zombies re-emerge and attack their hotel. Will Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang finally solve the mystery behind Zombie Island? “Zombies are a very popular theme in entertainment now and we wanted to create a fun, family-friendly version of this genre for Scooby-Doo! fans. So we brought back a Scooby-Doo! classic and continued the original story but created a captivating new plotline,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Vice President Family & Animation Marketing. She added, “Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island is an entertaining, original film that will appeal to a wide audience. It’s classic Scooby-Doo! with a contemporary look and feel, a fun storyline and engaging characters. This release is a must for your home entertainment library.” Scooby-Doo Return to Zombie Island features the familiar voice talents of Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo/Fred Jones, Grey Griffin as Daphne Blake, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers and Kate Micucci as Velma Dinkley. Digital On September 3, 2019, Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island will be available to own in high definition and standard definition from select digital retailers including Amazon, FandangoNOW, iTunes, PlayStation, Vudu, Xbox and others. I actually like the cover

The cover is just okay for me. The animation isn't great and the zombies look a bit more silly than the ones in the original Zombie Island film.

Now looking at it, they do look more kiddish. But I still like it, but maybe it's just me. Either way, I can see why some may not like it as much 7/11/2019 09:17:20 pm
I definitely won't judge the film yet just on the cover animation. It's possible the animation will be better than that in the actual film.

I'm starting to think there is not going to be a trailer because they have already showed us all what is usually realesed with a trailer

I think they will have a trailer. I wonder if they're holding it back until after the Comic Con premiere?

The zombies on the cover aren't half as scary as those in the original film. My only hope is that they are real ones.

The zombies indeed look super kiddy. The summary is just vague enough for us to not really know if this is Moonscar Island, or some other tropical island. They say "finally solve the mystery of Zombie Island" and "re-emerge" which makes me feel like it could be the same island, but I'm not sure. I don't know how I feel about it being a different island either.

I have problems with the line "finally" bit... they solved that mystery, so kinda worried what they'll do here. Granted, as it was a Cat GOD...they don't have to worship it on just one island hidden in a swamp. 7/12/2019 11:22:49 am
Agreed, or they solved it as much as it could be. The end of the movie's message was that the zombies didn't have a natural explanation because they were supernatural beings. It doesn't make sense to act like things didn't happen in the original. All I hope is that this movie doesn't completely do injustice to the original.

Are they any special features worth a damn on the DVD or it’s the same ol “dump episodes on it and call it a day”

It hasn't been announced yet, but it will probably just be like 3 bonus episodes that have been released a million times already. "Which Witch is Which?", "Mamba Wamba and the Voodoo Hoodoo" and "Big Scare in the Big Easy" if I had to guess.

When I read "finally solve the mystery" THEY ALREADY DID THAT. Oh my word I fear the worse and 1 month later for DVD release again, WHY? That's terrible marketing. I'll just find some site to watch it online when it comes out digitally and if I like it I'll buy it at some point when I feel like it, usually when it has come down in price a bit.

Oh and about the only good thing WB has done this year is release the almost complete New Scooby Doo movies in Region 2. Even then they can't bite the bullet and pay whoever whatever they want so that we can get Wednesday is Missing as well.

To be fair, it's possible that whoever's causing the issue with "Wednesday is Missing" won't accept any amount of money for them to release the episode. Would be strange, but it's possible. 7/12/2019 11:25:05 am
I don't get the point of making these sequel movies if they're not going to stay at least semi-true to the original. Who is their target audience here? Younger viewers aren't going to remember the original film, and adults are just going to be irritated that so many details from the original aren't consistent. If you're going to make a sequel, it should at least be consistent with the plot and tone of the original film, at least IMO.

I thought the same with curse of the 13th Ghost. My time with other fandoms (star wars) have actually flipped me a bit on the "scrappy" trope and I'd like to have at least had him acknowledged in the film. Some people still like him, and I feel sorry for his fans being yelled down by the broader scooby doo audience, or at least the ones who keep making jokes about him...

Couldn't agree more and new viewers of the original will like it the way it is anyway so daft trying to change things, guess that's Warner Bros. for you. 7/12/2019 04:03:00 pm
@John Locke I feel like most fans I’ve talked to at least enjoy Scrappy somewhat now. It’s WB who keeps making the jokes about him. 7/12/2019 04:16:37 pm
I half feel like WB doesn’t even care any longer and is just going to make these Scooby sequels regardless of caring about the continuity of the original film. They just want a money maker, but they don’t bother to check the original movie’s details to make sure they’re correct. Seems not a smart route to go given they have such a large adult fan base, but that’s just my opinion.

I talked to Lance Falk the other day he was telling me that he and the rest of the crew for the first four movies weren’t even contacted to return or at least consulted. He also said Glenn Leopold (writer of the original film) would have been happy to chime in

Disappointing, but it doesn't surprise me. WB just seems to want to pump out as many sequels as possible without actually wanting to put the work in to make them consistent with the original film.
