The movie only came out and hour and half ago and I'm already posting a review...you better believe I was refreshing that page over and over at 11:59pm EST until midnight. In fact, I'm still listening to "On Me" by Thomas Rhett, Kane Brown & Ava Max over the end credits as I type this lol.
This was an awesome movie! I thought the plot was amazing, as was the acting. I really didn't mind any of the new actors. All four of the main cast did a great job, and I thought Amanda Seyfried as Daphne was the standout actor for me. I loved Ken Jeong especially as Dynomutt and thought he was excellent in playing a more serious version of the classic character. Everyone else did a great job I thought as well, but Jeong and Seyfried really stuck out to me as doing a great job. The kids also all did a great job, especially Daphne and Shaggy's. I'll admit, I was actually familiar with Iain Armitage, who played young Shaggy, as he's the main character in another show I love, Young Sheldon, which has referenced Scooby three times in its three seasons and I've written fun facts about it before! In terms of the characterization, I thought everyone was spot on. No one seemed out of character, and the few supporting characters that had their characters changed all seemed reasonably so. I liked that Blue Falcon wasn't the original Blue Falcon, but rather his son Brian. It was a cool touch and I didn't mind the change-up there. I also really liked how Dynomutt was much more serious as a character. Despite his goofiness back in the 70s, this version of Dynomutt really worked for me. Regarding Captain Caveman, I was expecting him to be a much bigger part of the movie. He was in such a brief part of it, which I didn't think was bad, just more unexpected than anything. I honestly thought the other two Teen Angels were going be in the film too besides just Dee Dee! This must take place before that though, since Captain Caveman didn't seem to know her. Dee Dee was a really nice character as well, and I greatly enjoyed her presence as a strong feminine leader. I really liked Dick Dastardly as a villain. Jason Isaacs did an amazing job taking on the role, and Dick seemed like he was exactly like he was in Laff-a-Lympics (as Dread Baron...never watched Wacky Races personally). I absolutely adored the plotline of Muttley being lost in the underworld...it made me actually feel a little bit for Dick...until the end at least lol. In terms of villains, Cerberus had an amazing design. He was a super cool villain and I almost wish he would have been just a little more prominent in the film! The comedy was top notch and Scooby was super funny and witty. I especially enjoyed the IKEA joke and him randomly asking if Muttley was chipped haha. And speaking of comedy, Simon Cowell was certainly an interesting addition to the film lol. It was interesting how he wanted to invest in Mystery Inc. as a business and how he was repeatedly brought up throughout the film. It seemed like they almost combined the three groups of prior live action film series for this film...Shaggy and Scooby wanting to prove they're not screw-ups like in the first two, the origin story like the two prequels, plus all the robots and technology of Daphne & Velma. It was also really neat how they had all the other Hanna-Barbera characters like Jabberjaw, Magilla Gorilla and Atom Ant (was that the third one?) become part of the Falcon Fury during the credits. I felt the plot was just top-notch and I love how it sort of felt like a mystery but a bigger, more expanded one that didn't necessarily have to do with a ghost/monster until the end, but still had the unmasking and all the clues. Such an aspirational plot definitely made for a great Scooby movie! I didn't mind that the mystery wasn't centered around a monster, and Dick Dastardly and his robots, as well as the looming threat of Cerberus, made good villains. With references galore and such a tearjerking plot (especially that ending! I almost cried lol), this is an amazing film that I would definitely recommend as a must-watch for any Scooby fan. Oh, and I've gotta say I liked that Blue Falcon's intro song was DJ Khaled lol. Well, I guess that's it for this review until another one comes out. (Extra points to anyone who gets the terrible pun I just made)

I agree!! I wasn't a huge fan of Fred, Daphne, and Velma, but otherwise I really enjoyed it!

This was definitely a more Scooby and Shaggy focused film, but I didn't mind tbh.

The movie was good! All the references they made was a nice touch. Captain Caveman talking full sentences and using slang was weird but I didn't hate it. I loved the animation and the voice actors. I ALMOST cried near the end and thought the movie was gonna end with Shaggy gone and the sequel would be about rescuing him. And they almost got me when they caught Dastardly and he was wearing a mask! All and all, I can't wait to see how things will go from here with the Hannah Barbera Universe!

I feel the same way about Captain Caveman, but I didn't hate him. I had heard Tracy Morgan's voice from an interview previously, so my expectations weren't high. I'll admit I kinda giggled a little at the "Those are dope wheels!" line haha. For a moment, I thought that Dastardly was actually Simon Cowell lol.

Hahaha I'm glad somebody got it! There's no "We the best music!" in the film, though Blue Falcon's intro song is "All I Do Is Win" haha. Thanks, I tried not to include very many spoilers since I know a lot of people can't watch it from other countries (which is a really crappy thing of WB to do, tbh, I feel so bad for you guys!) It is an amazing movie and I'm sure you will love it!

What did you think of the other voice actors? And what rating would you give the movie?

On a scale of 1-10? I would give this movie a solid 9. It's not like Zombie Island level of good, but it's a pretty enjoyable movie with an awesome plot. I thought I'd mentioned in my review what I thought of all the voice actors, I guess maybe except Muttley and Dee Dee. I thought Billy West's Muttley was pretty decent, and them turning his signature laugh into a laugh of joy when he finds Dastardly again was pretty cute haha. I enjoyed Dee Dee's voice, Kiersey Clemons did a great job!

Which number would Scoob be at as far as ranking the Scooby Doo movies? 5/15/2020 05:38:21 pm
I don’t know if I could give a definitive ranking out of 44, but it’s definitely in the lower half of the top 10!

I'll read your review when I can actually watch it. Right now I'm very bitter about the way WB has treated us outside the US and horribly part of me wants the film to fail to teach them a lesson. That is what it has sadly come to. What should be one of the highlights of my year has been spoilt by the ineptitude of WB. Just hope someone has the decency to upload soon to Kim or somewhere else. WB can rot in hell.

It is currently only available in the US and Canada. I've even heard someone emailing WB here in the UK only to wait a week and get a generic it won't be out on Friday in the UK response. Me and others have constantly battered the Scoob! twitter feed asking for info just to be ignored. It's disgusting treatment. 5/15/2020 10:51:49 am
I'm really sorry that WB treats you, and those outside the US and Canada, so shabbily. It's horrible that they haven't even given you a date yet when they are hyping it up so much here. I'm sorry you have to deal with that and hopefully WB will realize the error of their ways someday (the sooner the better)

The sad fact is it will come back down on the fans. If we watch it illegally and don't buy it when released here WB loses out, what they deserve. But then there is the possibility they won't go ahead with the Hanna Barbera universe. 5/15/2020 11:49:31 am
Very true, and it could possibly take away the opportunity for a potential sequel to the film as well if it would have done well. Just all around a crappy situation for y'all overseas. :(

Haven't seen the movie yet but I have read the novelization and I find it mildly amusing that the movie bares more than a passing resemblance to a certain maligned Scooby series involving Shaggy & Scooby fighting a super-villain while Scooby is given new hi-tech enhancements

I kept wondering where that scene was going to show up and it never did! I totally agree that Zac sounded like Frank in that scene. I was honestly kind of thinking that Shaggy was going to be trapped for a moment, but I suppose they couldn't bank on a sequel. I always worry about dated references too, so I hope this won't become dated but think it might from all the pop culture references.

Isn't that though a part of Scooby Doo, look how outdated Whaer Are You looks compared to today's films!

I suppose in a way it is, though I don't think they ever dropped any brand names or current celebrities in Where Are You. You can't ever really fully plan for how outdated something's going to be in the future, due to technology changes and such, but I feel a very easy way to avoid completely dating something is not to include current celebrities/brands, because we already know that's going to change a ton in, say, 50 years.

I'd give this film maybe a 7. I honestly am not a fan of Will Forte and Zac Efron's voice acting. I also hated Brian. Aside from that, the movie was decent. Nothing egregious awful but nothing out-of-this-world fantastic.

I hope after the lockdown ends, WB will put Scoob in theaters at some point, even though it already came out on digital. It would be kinda like a rerelease, maybe just in certain countries. 5/16/2020 01:58:28 pm
That would be really cool! I hope the film does well enough to warrant that :)

Wow, where to start, that was awesome. Loved all the kick backs, Messick, Kasem, Takamoto, Hex Girls. On the Dick Dastardly point, my brother got that spot on and I never realised, it was Dick in disguise. I felt that part of the movie was a little of, like why would Simon Cowell take interest in them, but as soon as my brother said it the penny dropped. It was Dastardly's way to split the gang up so he could get to Scooby.I really liked how Dynomutt's and Blue Falcon's personalities were switched from the TV show, loved serious Dynomutt. Only 2 things I'm a little peeved about is where is the Cerberus merch. I mean in all truth that was the main villain and yet nothing, why? Muttley barely featured yet got loads. Secondly, what is WB doing with Frank Welker. The star of this movie yet you look at any of the promos or advertising material, nothing, a great example being the premiere intro, advertising all the big stars and their roles and then just Scooby Doo, no mention of Frank at all? Overall though loved it, but so badly want merch of that Cerberus.
Reply
5/16/2020 07:36:43 pm
I personally loved the new more serious Dynomutt! I wish they'd have Cerberus merch out, he was a really cool design! I find it odd too that Muttley got so much merch, now that we know he was in like 5 minutes of the movie. I think the fact that Frank Welker isn't mentioned in any of the promos like you said just cements in the fact that they just wanted to promote the heck out of the big-name celebrities to get people to see it.

Just watched it today. Loved it. Agreed with basically everything you said in the review. Another review that I almost completely agree with is Zach Pope's. Only difference is I would give it an A- instead of a B+, cuz while Zach still liked Will Forte's Shaggy, I like him a bit more than Zach did. You can check it out here:

Thanks for the link! I never would have expected them to go to Romania either, but I'm also glad they chose to do something different. Any movie with Romania as a setting seems to be in Transylvania, so I'm glad they did something different too. Cool to know they were spot on!

The movie as a whole was pretty good. I have my quibbles with the designs, particularly Fred and Velma and the voice of Shaggy and Velma didn't work for me at all. Surprisingly, the guy voicing Fred didn't bother me, but that may be more because he had so little to do than because he wasn't Frank Welker. Daphne and Scooby were spot on in both look and voice.
Reply
5/17/2020 09:14:37 pm
Daphne seems to be the voice actress no one complains about, while I've seen complaints about Shaggy's and Velma's the most. Eh, I didn't mind overly much about Scooby's voice.

I personally really liked the movie, but I totally get why it isn't everyone's cup of tea. I was okay with Blue Falcon being a bit dumber just since it was his son and not actually him, so at least there was a logical explanation instead of them just changing his personality without saying anything. The pop culture references also presented a bit of a problem I felt, since it dated the movie and automatically made it less relevant in 10 years by having those references in there, which were easy to avoid IMO. Oh well.
